Rose was fat.
Well maybe fat wasn't the word, but she wasn't the skinniest thing either.
She had bigger hips than most girls in her grade, and as much as she tried to hide her curves with oversized sweaters and loose t-shirts, it never seemed to do the trick.
She did get teased about them sometimes, and it was always one of Rose's sensitive insecurities. She tried not to think about it much, but as she sat down in Aaron's couch, watching some random show on the TV, it was all she could really think about.
She could feel his eyes on her.
And somehow thinking about her figure made her upset; her lips pursed in consciousness as she continued to follow the show on the television. She thought that the show could distract her from her thoughts, but it wasn't working either.
"Did you really just give up a 2 day and 1 night field trip just to give me my book back?" She could hear him smiling, and when she looked at him, he was. She couldn't help but smile too.
"Why are you making it sound like a bad thing?" Rose was already forgetting.
He shook his head in disbelief. "You're making it sound like the easiest thing in the world,"
She shrugged, still smiling. "Well it kinda was. I mean I care about you Aaron, so it wasn't much to sacrifice really."
He gave her a flat look. "Are you being corny now?"
She grinned. "Is it working?"
A chuckle brewed up in his chest, biting his bottom lip as he smiled. "And you call me weird."
She smiled softly, as though she was tired. "You are weird Aaron, why do you think I hang out with you?"
He smiled once more before they both resumed to watching the rest of the movie. They didn't speak a word as the film went on, only a few breaths leaving their lips. But their hands were touching. Her fingers were right on top of his own, nourishing the feeling of his touch.
Aaron's hand always felt so comfortable; almost eliminating any worry or discomfort she ever had. His touch always seemed to do the most insane things to her, and even though it was probably nothing, it felt like everything.
And for a while she tried to forget about how uneven her curves were, or how flimsy her skin was. For a while, she thought she was beautiful. Beautiful not in the sense of thigh gaps or size zero waists, but of beautiful as in that feeling you get after you've accepted your flaws.
That was beautiful.
"Aaron?" Rose mumbled quietly, watching as the credits rolled themselves on the screen.
"Hmm?" He answered quietly, his fingers tightening against her own.
"What did you think of Great Expectations?"
She could see a smile illuminate his face, making the room seem brighter than it already was. It wasn't one of Aaron's full on smiles, but it was one of his soft ones; one where his lips would curl into a subtle lazy grin, his right dimple indented in his cheeks.

"I really liked it," He said, still smiling. "I thought Pip was a funny guy."
She smiled too. "I think so too."
"You know Jane Eyre was suppose to be for you," He told her, the slight clench of his jaw made his entire face seem more structured. "I bought it for you, you idiot, and then you come along in the middle of a bloody downpour to give it to me." He was chuckling lightly, almost in amazing shock. "Only you would do that Rose, only you."
She smiled sheepishly. "Glad we settled on that."
Aaron's slender fingers were now brushing random shapes across her palms; almost soothingly. It was actually making her drowsy on how calming his fingers were against her hand. "Aaron," She asked, her eyes already drooping in sleepiness. "What do you think about love?"
His fingers abruptly stopped for a moment; as though flinching away from her. She tried not to be hurt. But when she could feel his delicate contact, it seemed to be more tranquilizing. More passionate.
It seemed bizarre to Rose on how the touch of his fingers made her entire body feel like it was bursting in flames, but also as tender as a cloud.
A grin expression crossed his features. "Love is overrated." Jaw clenched. Eyebrows straight. "And I don't believe in that crap." Blue eyes igniting in their own delicate flame.
She frowned. "Why not?"
"It gives us humans false hope that everything will be okay, that we-" He shut his eyes. Took a deep breath. "-can find happiness in each other." He opened his eyes, and they looked darker than they did before. "There's so many risks," He swallowed. Looked away. "And how can I ruin something that has taken everything away?" Eyes determined. Fists clenched. "How can I allow myself to destroy the thing I made to protect me?"
She shrugged, faintly leaning her head against his shoulder. "No one said love was easy."
"But I don't know anymore," Aaron mumbled quietly. "Perhaps I am wrong."
She quirked an eyebrow at him. "Did you just admit defeat?"
He scoffed. "Not defeat, just slight misguidance."
She rolled her eyes. "Sure, misguidance."
He smiled an almost smile; one that Rose always found breathtaking on Aaron. "I'm still mad about you leaving to come here,"
Rose let out a groan. "Get over it Aaron, you shouldn't think about unimportant stuff much." She smiled teasingly. "But rather, we should divert out attention to-" She grabbed the copy of Jane Eyre, grinning now. "-and see how good your recommendations are."
"Are you questioning my taste in literature?"
"Are you questioning my question in your taste of literature?"
"Really Rose?"
She let out a giggle, but it was more of a laugh really. "Aaron, stop blabbering and let me try this book out." She gave him a challenging look. "Let's see how divine your Literature game is,"
And Aaron
couldn't
handle
it
anymore.
He laughed, the most genuine laugh Rose has ever seen Aaron perform. It was a beauty that no words could encircle how beautiful; a beauty that it seemed everything else was never as beautiful as Rose thought it was; and a beauty that Rose was going to nourish forever.
Eyes crinkled, his pearly whites in sight, Aaron looked surreal. Almost too flawless to be human, too perfect to be mortal, and too beautiful to be just a boy who wore all black.

He was still recovering from his laughing fit, a smile on his face while he looked at her. "Go ahead then," Rose noticed how the grey sweatpants he was wearing made Aaron look extra tall; almost making him look 7 feet tall as he walked to the kitchen to grab her a cup of water.
She thanked him when she took a sip, carefully putting the book on her lap as she opened the first page. A strand of her now dried blonde hair fell onto her eyes, and just as she was about to tuck it in behind her ears-
he did it for her.
She looked at him wide eyed, almost feeling how hot her face became. And she thought Aaron would just shrug it off, pretend that it was something completely normal,
but
he
didn't.
He guarded her stare, almost as though he was debating what he should do. His fingers lingered at the nape of her neck -she couldn't breathe, couldn't breathe, couldn't breathe- gently tucking any loose hair onto her back.
Rose thought she was going to explode.
"Rose," He said almost shyly. "Why do you like me?"
Rose looked at him, baffled by his question. Her heart was beating so fast so fast so fast and she never thought that in a million years Aaron would ever ask her that question. "W-what?"
He looked worried; the fear reflecting itself off his blue eyes. "I'm sorry I'm just being bloody ridiculous-"
"I don't know, there a lot of things," Rose told him, taking a deep breath. "There's a lot of things I like about you Aaron, a lot." Aaron looked like he was going to cry.
He retreated his fingers back, darting his gaze to his lap. He seemed stiff; rock solid as he sat next to her. "That's very nice of you to say Rose."
She gave him an encouraging smile, tracing her fingers over his knuckles. "I'm just being honest."
He closed his eyes. "I'm not any good for you,"
She pursed her lips. "And why not?"
He sighed, opening his eyes. "I'm afraid I won't be able to give you what you want,"
She grinned. "What do I want?"
He was fighting back a smile. "A perfect boyfriend,"
She gave him a look. "Really Aaron? You're being melodramatic."
"Did you really just call me melodramatic when I'm trying to deny your feelings?"
She was laughing now. "Well you didn't yet,"
Aaron was smiling now, seemingly surprised from the response he got from Rose. "Like I said before, you're weird."
"Hey, normal is pretty overrated."
He scooted closer to her, and Rose tried to stay calm stay calm stay calm, but she couldn't. "So you are still willing to like me even if I am a runaway murderer with a criminal record worse than a sociopath who is a drug addict?"
She laughed at him, but nevertheless nodding her head. "I would even if you hated books."
Aaron scowled, disgusted. "Christ, never say that again."
She shrugged. "I made my point."
He smiled at her, very delicately; as though caressing the side of her face with just that one curve of his lips. "Are you tired?"
She shook her head. "Actually no, I'm fine."
He smiled teasingly, his dimples dinting his cheeks. "Are you cold?"
"No," She answered defensively, unconsciously rubbing her arm. "I'm good."
"Is that why you're shivering?"
Rose scowled. "Shut up,"
Aaron smiled, but this time, it was a genuine one. "If you want, I can get you-"
"No, don't make a fuss out of it," She grumbled. "I'll handle it."
"You're really stubborn aren't you?"
She smiled. "That I am."
Aaron nodded his head lightly, some of his brown hair falling on top of his eyes. His hair looked so clean, and so soft, and it took everything in her to not touch it like a creeper.
"So even if I tell you that my parents are about 593.41 miles away from me, you won't run away?"
Her eyes snapped to him, the shock imprinting itself on her brown orbs as she soaked in what he just said. "What?"
He smiled sadly; head ducked down in shame, while his grip on her hand loosened. "Yeah," He said. "They're not here with me." Rose's hands were trembling.
"Aaron..."
He shook his head. "Don't Rose, I'm fine." He exhaled a long, tired breath, his blue eyes a crystalline teal right under the stare of her own amber one. And it was then that Rose knew.
Aaron was water, and Rose was fire; they were two different things, but things that possess so much power. Two things that could never mingle together, but things that would wither without one another.
And even if Aaron did manage to extinguish her, she was sure she was going to burn him at the same time. That made sense to Rose.
"No, I wouldn't," Rose closed Jane Eyre, put it off her lap before she took his hands in hers. "I wouldn't run away."
Aaron peeked at her through his luscious lashes; she could see the awe swirling in his eyes. He nodded. Squeezed their fingers.
"Normally I'd try to be more convincing, but I'm too tired to be sappy," Rose mumbled, rubbing her eyes.
Aaron was smiling now, nodding his head in agreement before he turned the TV off and offered her his hand. "Time for bed then,"
Rose smiled again, nodding her head as she took his hand.
Aaron gave her a lop-sided grin, almost lazily as he lead her to the bedroom. "You're taking the bed, I'll take the couch."
She stopped both of them. "No,"
He looked at her. "What do you mean no?"
"I want the couch,"
"Rose-"
"No Aaron, I insist."
"You're the guest-" She didn't want him to be so far away from her.
"But-"
"Alright," He sighed. "I'll sleep on the floor."
She quirked an eyebrow. "On the floor?"
"Yeah, right beside the bed."
She pondered in thought for a few moments before she found herself nodding her head. "Alright, fine by me." She looked away, almost embarrassed by what she was about to say. "Are you sure? I mean the bed will still have some space,"
Aaron froze, his blue eyes widening at her words. He then smiled softly, looking away. She could've sworn she saw a slight tint of pink on his cheeks. "I would never disrespect you like that Rose," He said quietly. "I'll have to court you first before I can allow myself to do that."
Rose grinned. "You're so old fashioned."
He smiled back. "Better than nothing,"
But that was the thing, Aaron was better than anything she has ever seen.
☾☾☾
Rose did sleep on the bed, while Aaron set up a bed of his own right beside her on the floor.
It was still raining, but now it was starting to thunder.
And Rose wasn't even fully asleep yet; she was somewhere in between the real world and her dreams, distracted but aware, asleep but awake.
Awake enough to hear Aaron's whimpers from underneath her.
Her eyes immediately flew open, rushing over to the other side as she looked at Aaron.
And
her
heart
was
breaking.
Face scrunched up in distress, hands trembling by his sides as his body twitched from side to side. Everything about him looked heartbreaking. Rose never knew that someone as beautiful as Aaron could make her feel this terrified; so worried by just looking at him.
His blue eyes were veiled by his eyelids. Jaw clenched. Teeth gritted. Deep breaths inhaled.
She couldn't just watch anymore.
She quietly got to her feet, refraining herself from yawning. She then bent down, biting her lip in anticipation as his chest heaved a shaky breath. It's okay, okay, okay.
"Aaron?" She shook his shoulder lightly, just the simple touch of her fingers. And she thought she was going to have to shake him some more, but-
Aaron's eyes instantly flew open.
His midnight irises looked so vulnerable; peeled off from any armor Aaron has ever put on. They looked absolutely beautiful. Shining in the dim moonlight, his eyes darted to Rose first before to the room's window.
As though noticing it was heavily raining, he let out a small breath, looking at Rose once more. She was glad she could still see his real eyes. "Did I wake you?" He whispered, sitting up as he sighed. "I'm terribly sorry-"
"It's alright, I couldn't sleep anyway," Rose smiled, giving Aaron an encouraging nod. "Bad dream?"
He shrugged. "I don't even know," But when one more strike on thunder vibrated the ground, Aaron flinched once more. He shut his eyes and clenched his fists; taking in a few deep breaths. Rose smiled gently, almost laughing.
Aaron was afraid of thunder.
She mildly touched his shoulder, still smiling. "Are you scared of the thunder?" He scowled at that.
He shook his head lightly. "Not scared, just disturbed."
"Do you want to talk for a bit?" Rose noticed how droopy Aaron's eyes were becoming again, and she thought a small talk would be able to lull him back to sleep.
He shook his head. "You need to sleep-"
She sat crisscross right beside him; her back up against the bed. "It's alright, what harm can a lil talk do?"
Aaron was thinking, pursed lips in uncertainty, before he nodded. He even offered her a grateful smile, as though he knew exactly what she was doing. And she wanted to explode, explode, explode.
"What do you want to talk about?" He was sitting beside her now, his own back against the box spring. Their fingers were brushing again.
She gulped quietly, playing of the hem of Aaron's black sweatshirt that she borrowed. "Is this the part where we talk about the deep stuff people talk about at 2am?"
Aaron lightly chuckled; a few wisps of his hair settling at his temples. "Is it?"
She nodded. "It is 2am, but what deep stuff can we talk about?"
"Perhaps Mariana Trench in the Pacific Ocean?"
She grinned. "It is 40 meters deep."
He nodded back. "Density of water is increased by 4.96% and makes 95 litres of water under pressure."
Rose giggled, lacing her fingers with his own and giving it a light squeeze when she heard another blot of thunder. "We took 2am conversations to a whole different level,"
Aaron shrugged, and Rose could see the light specks of sweat glistening on his temples and jaw. "It is deeper than anything people might talk about."
"True that,"
Aaron let out a small breath. "2am now huh? I have to be up by 5,"
She furrowed her eyebrows. "Why?"
"I have work to attend."
"Really?"
"Yes Rose, really."
She then nodded before she nudged his nose with her finger. "Then go to sleep,"
Another bolt of thunder. Aaron flinched. "I can't,"
Rose frowned, her mind simmering in thoughts. "Is there something I can do?"
Aaron gulped, looking at her almost in utmost fear. Rose found out that he only does that when he was considering her suggestion. She gave him a reassuring smile.
His eyes turned cobalt blue; almost something you would concoct in a Chemistry lab. So beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. "Can I hold your hand?" His voice was barely above a whisper, the soft tone of his voice made Rose's heart feel like a beast in her chest.
She smiled. "Of course,"
Aaron looked flustered. "I mean like you go sleep up there, and I'll hold your hand from down here."
She let out a soft laugh. "Okay."
Aaron waited to lie down as he watched Rose climb up his bed again, lying down on his side. He lay on his side, snuggling against the blanket. He was so beautiful.
Rose then laid on her side, a clear vision of Aaron's blazing blue eyes before she put out her hand for him, smiling. He smiled back.
His fingers clamped against her own; their entwined hands dangling in midair. It wasn't something anyone would normally do, but when both of them did it, it felt so natural. She didn't mind that her hands were in the chilly Canadian air, because his fingers were just as warm as they always were.
And that was how they slept.
Aaron's elbow settling on the floor while his arm was leaning against the bed stand; his fingers curling with Rose's own smooth ones. While Rose's arm was flat across, meeting his fingers halfway as they rested on the edge of the bed.
It was the most beautiful sleep Rose has ever gotten.
☾☾☾
2 hours later, Rose already found herself awake. She could see the little sunshine of dawn tickle the glass of the windows; brightening up Aaron's room beautifully.
Their fingers were still together.
