Dear Catherine,

It is too long since we have met, dear cousin, and how I miss you terribly. It seems circumstances are not kind in bringing us together in recent years, and I must confess how immensely I desire your company now. It is truly a mad world, cousin. You see, my dear Thomas has passed. I feel as if I am standing on the edge of a precipice, and the world around spins out of control, surely working to dizzy me from the edge so that I may be swallowed up in the great void. My beloved Thomas, so strong and healthy and all that, you know, and so smart. Rather a blow it has been, and a stern chastener of my spirits. Of course plans have been thrown to the wind, truly. I find even now, my own personal interests, generally so important, have not mattered. After saying a final goodbye to Thomas, I find myself experiencing a deep and unforgiving loneliness. Why, if it were not for these letters, and my dear friends here in London, I should imagine I would be whisked off to the mad house with an acute case of hysteria. With intent to save your gentle heart from the wearisome facts surrounding Thomas' death, I will not go into great detail. I must, however, express that I find the circumstance gravely suspicious, and do plan to sort out the truth, on my own if I must. Perhaps I shall write again soon with a greater understanding of my husband's death.
