《No Matter What》39 | Explanation? Magic!

One thing that Sebastian should have expected at this point, he supposed, was magic to be the answer behind why he feels like something is off.
Best friend acting odd? He’s a werewolf.
Find a creepy necklace? It’s a magical item!
Wonder why your other friend is closed off? Well, he’s also a werewolf, and his dad is a murderous shit.
Your parents suddenly need to go away on an emergency that is somehow connected to your dead father and his apparently alive mother (the grandmother you never knew) - and when they do return, they come with a collection of strangers which include the aforementioned estranged grandmother and a fucking dragon?
Yeah, the answer to that was probably some magic crap that Sebastian was defiantly not ready to deal with. Not without a drink first to calm his nerves.
“Does anyone want a drink?” He offered.
Everyone pretty much was looking at him like he was acting weird. Which he was, to be fair, but he was very tired of everything getting turned upside down at the drop of a hat these days.
Once he’d gotten himself a can of coke, he returned to the living room and took a seat between Luke and Edmund on the couch they had claimed. As Sebastian opened the can and took his first swig, he looked around at the odd gathering. The human-looking-dragon-person was leaning against the wall beside the fireplace, the other four strangers and his grandmother were sharing the L-shaped couch, and his parents were each seated in an armchair, holding hands like they were each other’s lifeline.
Emily pursed her lips. “Did you know Edmund is a werewolf?”
“It’s only been a month since I first turned.” Ed answered for him. “Neither of us knew about- anything, before then.”

“Oh. Alright.” Emily nodded stiffly.
“Uh, Buddy, are you okay?” Nick asked Seb, who gave a half-hearted shrug.
“Hmm, yeah, just confused. Can you explain things to me now?”
“Yeah. We- we missed your birthday.” Nick said in a mournful/apologetic tone.
Sebastian glanced unsubtly at the strangers in the room. “I have a feeling you had a good reason.”
Emily winced but nodded. We told you about that vow, well, it was a magical vow that kept us from talking to you about the truth of the supernatural. Because we knew how traumatic it could be getting tangled in everything. We didn’t want to hide it from you forever, but we still wanted you to have a decent, stable childhood.
Sebastian nodded. “How exactly did you guys get caught up in this? Do you have magic?”
“In a way,” Nick answered. “I was born with the gifting of a seer, someone who can see the future, sometimes I can change things and sometimes I can’t. Your dad- well, he was an elf.”
“An elf?” Sebastain echoed with a look of confusion. “His ears weren’t pointed though?”
The strangers in the room were all wearing varying expressions of confusion, while his parents looked mildly amused.
“Fae are the ones with pointed ears, Hun. Though they can change their appearance to hide that. I accused him and Nick of being fae when I first met them actually.” Emily reminisced.
“Which was rude since we did nothing to make you think that, even if it was an odd situation.” Nick recalled.
“Hmm, yes, I’m sorry I thought the two guys offering to break me out of a dungeon were pulling my leg.”
“Why were you in a dungeon?” Edmund asked.

“Smuggling illegal immigrants.” Emily shrugged. “But that’s neither here nor there. They got me out and then we had a rather long adventure, after which we just wanted to live in peace, far away from any magic and such.”
Nick nodded. “We travelled for a while and things were fine. I hadn’t had any huge visions for a while, even after you were born. We knew you might get some kind of magic though so we kept an eye for signs. When you would have your dreams, we knew they were magic related, so we made medicine to deal with it. Defiantly didn’t anticipate the werewolves though.”
“But it does explain why Bruce was acting so odd last month.” Emily muttered.
“Okay, just recapping, dad was an elf, Nick is a seer, and somehow that got passed down to me?” Sebastian asked.
Emily nodded. “Of course, you have a bit of something from each of us. You’re our son after all.”
“I want to ask how the hell that works, but getting back to present matters... what happened exactly?” Sebastian questioned, glancing again at the strangers.
Nick sighed. “Right. You remember you got home and I looked like shit.”
Sebastian nodded.
“I’d had a vision. A rather... frightening vision at that. It had to do with were your dad and I grew up. I...” Nick paused to compose himself. “I saw it being destroyed. We tried to stop it but...”
“We are the last survivors of that realm now.” Sebastian’s grandmother finished.
Sebastian felt a pang of sympathy at that thought. These people had apparently just lost everything, their home, their families, their friends. And Nick had seen it, but wasn’t able to stop it, probably making him feel responsible to some extent.
He wanted to ask a lot of questions, some he wasn’t even sure he wanted answers to, but he finally settled on asking, “What are you doing next then?”
“Well, we were going to figure that out once we got back here, but then Sid smelt that werewolves had been inside the house, and we panicked.” Nick explained with a nervous laugh. “Guess in the end we had nothing to worry about.”
Sebastian, Edmund and Luke exchanged glances, silently debating whether or not they should make their own big reveal.
Edmund finally muttered. “About that...”
And Sebastian felt like he was defiantly going to need more coke.
