《SkillGap》Chapter 30: Strings VS Plastic
Advertisement
Maya stands up, Xika reaches the field and they stare at each other.
Maya smiles.
Maya: Let's have a good battle.
Xika doesn't respond, he turns and walks away from her then stops.
Maya looks confused.
Maya: Okay.
...
Kofron quickly pulls up the megaphone to his mouth.
"On one side we have a red-haired girl! And on the other side we have, Xika! The plastic ghost ninja guardian!"
"What a stupid name…Change that shit Xika, anyways."
"LET THE THIRD BATTLE BEGIN!!!"
…
Xika quickly turns around which startles Maya a little.
He gets into a position where he's slightly grabbing the tip of the back of his sword and looks like he's ready to swing it.
"He's got a sword so I should definitely use a spear and a shield, definitely." Maya thinks.
"Xika is already in a crazy position, ready to release one of his super deadly attacks!" Kofron yells.
"Deadly attacks, I thought killing wasn't allowed?" Maya thinks nervously.
Maya creates a string spear and dashes towards Xika, but in just about 3 seconds after being seemingly hit by nothing, Maya falls onto the floor. She is covered in small but visible bruises.
Xika puts his sword back in its handle and stands, staring condescendingly.
"She has collapsed! How did he manage to do that in just a few seconds!?" Kofron yells.
…
Minaro: He hit her with the sword?
Mausho looks over to Minaro, a little surprised.
Mausho: You were able to see what happened?
Minaro: A little. It mostly looked like a blur though.
Mausho: Yeah, Xika has an unnecessarily complicated way to boost how fast he can swing his sword. I think I might remember how it works.
Mausho thinks for a few seconds.
Mausho: Nevermind I don't remember.
Iza: I remember.
Mausho: You do?
Iza: Yeah, how do you not remember? He told us when he was sleepwalking.
Mausho: Oh, yeah! That shit happened a long time ago though, I'm not gonna remember that.
Iza: Okay, anyways, Minaro...
Xika's first skill, he calls it "Blind Aimbot", if he closes his eyes, he will always hit his opponents with his sword, as long as he knows where they are.
His second skill, "Great Memory", you know what that is.
And his last skill is "Handicap boost.", the weaker he presents himself in a battle, the faster he gets. Closing his eyes is a way to make himself technically weaker.
If he uses the 3 skills together, he is able to remember the entire location around him so that when he closes his eyes, no matter where his opponent is, he will always hit them, and because he closed his eyes his swinging speed is boosted.
Minaro: That is more complicated than it needs to be.
…
As Xika is walking away, Maya slowly stands up while trembling, she quickly shoots multiple strings at Xika.
A shadow appears under Xika which he sinks into, basically phasing into the ground. The strings flop onto the floor.
"Xika goes into the floor! Lurking under the ground, who knows where he's going next!?"
Maya looks confused, she stands up.The shadow Xika sinked into quickly starts moving across the floor.
"What the hell!?" Maya thinks as she tries to track the shadow.
"Where is that shadow going!? Mexico!?"

The shadow stops under Maya and Xika pops out of the ground and slams the tip of his unsheathed sword into Maya's chin knocking her back.
Maya stumbles back, Xika's starts to smack her repeatedly with his sword at normal speed.
Maya blocks, Xika then closes his eyes, the speed is incomprehensible. Maya quickly wraps herself in a string ball
Xika continues attacking for a little, then he opens his eyes and stops attacking. He phases into the ground again.
Maya is alert but has no idea where Xika is. Suddenly he pops out of the ground and from the floor phases into Maya's ball and tries to punch her.
but due to tight space and not exactly knowing where Maya is at, Xika misses and hits the roof of the ball.
"What the hell is going inside that ball!?"
Maya quickly kicks Xika out of the ball, it unwraps after and she jumps out. Maya remakes her spear and dashes towards Xika who is still getting up and starts swinging. Xika phases into the ground again. Maya looks a little angry.
"That skill is stupid!" She thinks.
Xika quickly pops out of the ground behind her but this time with his eyes already closed and already in his swinging stance.
Maya is hit several times and falls onto the floor again.
"Jeez, another deadly attack!"
…
Minaro: Why hasn't he used the sharp part of his sword yet? Oh, wait, he would probably kill her if he did.
Mausho: There is no sharp part, it's plastic.
Minaro: Huh, why?
Mausho: I don't know. He hasn't told us.
Minaro: He would be a lot deadlier with a real sword.
Mausho: Yeah, I'm kinda glad he doesn't have one, If he did...he'd be the strongest probably.
Minaro doesn't respond.
Iza: Xika actually told me about the sword before...
Mausho: Oh he did? What did he say?
Iza: He has the plastic sword so that his energy doesn't run out, if he uses his skills with a real sword or any deadly object his energy runs out way way quicker.
Mausho: Oh, shit, well that makes sense.
…
While Maya is trying to get up, she is struck even more and the striking doesn't stop.
"He's not letting her get up! I doubt she'll be able to stand for days after this!"
...
Iza: Poor girl, she doesn't really stand a chance.
Mausho: He is a guardian and with some kinda OP ass skills, I don't know what we expected.
Iza: He's really going in on her too.
…
Xika finally stops hitting her and opens his eyes. Maya is covered in very visible bruises and trembling a lot but still manages to slowly stand up.
"Oh, she's up."
Xika approaches Maya and smacks the points on her body that are already badly damaged.
"Ow, nevermind."
Suddenly several big string spikes shoot out of Maya's arms which force Xika to jump back.
"She's up!?"
Maya stands up and yells in pain at the top of her lungs.
Maya: That really hurts asshole!
"She's up!"
Xika looks unamused.
"Super fast, most likely phases through anything I make, what do I do?" Maya thinks.
"I gotta get smart with him."
Maya creates a string scythe and dashes towards Xika, he sinks into the ground again.

Maya starts to violently swing the scythe around her, Xika isn't coming out of the ground.
"I think this is working? He can't find an opening."
Xika pops out of the ground far away from Maya and stares at her.
Xika: Do you think you've outsmarted me?
Maya doesn't know how to respond.
Maya: Uh, no.
Xika dashes towards Maya and lunges into her legs knocking her down. Maya hits the floor, Xika steps on her back, and then slams his sword into her head as hard as he can.
"She definitely has brain damage now!" Kofron yells.
...
A few hours after Minaro, Doa, Maya and Sumairu went to LossPalleys forest, Bukkaru woke up from his sleep.
He hops off a sofa in the lobby of the skill center.
"Where did everyone go?"
Bukkaru walks to the front door and realizes he can't open it as he's too short.
Bukkaru starts to slam his head into the door to hurt himself so that he can go into his human form.
That works and he transforms, Bukkaru walks out and around the skill center and searches for them.
"Did they say they were going somewhere?"
"I can't remember but I probably teleported them to it."
"Who's going to feed me? I don't know where my food is at, I don't know how to cook either...I need to find them!"
Bukkaru goes back into the Skillcenter and spends a few minutes searching for them in there but doesn't find them.
So he goes back outside and starts sniffing to try and catch a scent he recognizes and surprisingly he does.
He smells Minaro and starts to follow the scent.
He has been traveling for about 3 days.
…
Xika steps off Maya who seems to be unconscious now.
As Xika walks away he feels Maya grab his leg and hold onto it tightly.
Xika: Leave my leg alone.
Xika raises his sword to hit Maya again, she wraps her arm and part of Xika's leg all the way up to the arm that Xika has the sword in, in string, tying them together.
"Oh, I thought the battle was over! But Maya still has more stuff up her sleeve!"
Xika just phases into the ground again, the strings unwrap and Maya stands up. Xika pops out of the ground and quickly dashes towards her.
Maya predicts that he was going to target her legs again and manages to grab Xika as he hits her.
She holds him tightly, then they are wrapped together in strings.
Xika: Let me go right now.
Maya: Give up! Please?
Xika phases into the ground again then pops out away from Maya.
Xika: Shut up.
Maya creates a scythe and spear.
Xika yawns.
Xika: It's getting boring, So I'll do everyone a favor and end this fight.
Xika closes his eyes and gets into stance, he starts swinging his sword.
Then he opens his eyes only to spot Maya flying towards him at an insane speed. She punches him and slams her feet into the ground stop.
Xika quickly stands up.
"Huh? How did she..? did she not get hit?" He thinks.
What Maya did was she stood still and started spinning her scythe at an insane speed in front of her using her other strings so that she would block most of Xika's hits, then she threw her spear as hard as she could while having a string attached to it so it would pull her.
Maya swings her scythe at Xika, he blocks and sinks into the ground, Maya starts to spin her scythe around her legs.
Xika pops out far away from her, he closes his eyes and starts swinging again.
Maya quickly tries her best to block the swinging, she spins the scythe using her hands this time as she wasn't able to get the strings out.
Xika stops swinging, he was paying attention to the sounds around him this time and managed to sink into the ground as Maya was heading towards him.
Xika quickly pops out of the ground behind Maya and uses his sword to hold her in a choke hold.
Xika: Give up or I'll do this harder.
Maya tries to escape, but Xika's hold tightens.
Maya slaps his arms to signify to let her go since she's now unable to speak.
Xika let's Maya go and she hits the floor. He walks away, but then turns around and hits her a couple of times for the last time just to make sure the battle is really done.
Maya doesn't show signs of standing up quickly this time.
"Xika is the winner of the third match!" Kofron yells.
…
Liz looks around.
Liz: Who's up next?
Sosa walks up to her.
Sosa: I might as well go.
Liz: Your opponent will be Minaro, I'm pretty sure.
Sosa: Alright. Rift guy.
Sosa walks up to the battle field.
...
Maya slowly crawls over to where Minaro is sitting and flops onto the floor next to him.
Minaro stands up and stretches when suddenly he hears a meow. Minaro turns his head and spots Bukkaru walking towards him.
Minaro: What the fuck?
"Hey, I finally found you...what the hell are you doing all the way over here?"
Minaro: You know, it was part of a mission we were on. Why are you here?
"Got lonely, went to find you guys."
Minaro: I'm surprised you were able to find us.
"Yeah, I've got a good nose...So what's going on?"
Minaro: We're fighting the people over there, it's a part of a test they're doing.
Minaro is pointing at the group of guardians.
"Do you want my help?"
Minaro: Um...Yeah, I don't feel like fighting yet.
"Okay, so what do I do?"
Minaro: Uh, Just go to the field over there and fight that guy. You can't kill him, he can't kill you. It's a battle of stamina really.
"Aight."
Bukkaru walks over to the field which surprises Sosa.
Sosa: I'm fighting a cat?
Liz yells over to Minaro.
Liz: Hey, why is there a cat on the field!?
Minaro: It can fight!
Liz looks a little confused but hints to Kofron to start the fight.
Kofron quickly runs to the battlefield and pets Bukkaru then runs back to where he usually stands.
Sosa: Wait, so I'm actually fighting a cat?
Kofron: On one side we have a cute black cat! And on the other side we have Sosa! The finger guardian!
LET THE FOURTH MATCH BEGIN!!!

The Paths of Magick
Credits: Story by Xcaliburnt. Cover Art by @Bervolart. Magick, the power to bend the laws of reality. All because of a mystical substance known as mana. Mages follow the Paths to achieve power, for there is no more addictive chase. Each Path winds and twists, forcing mages through the flames of adversity and challenge. Though the operative word is "path", the reality is far less straightforward. Instead of a road, Paths are like the branches of world trees, erupting into the heavens, intertwining, and ending in sharp snaps. Only the strongest reach the sky. There are several Paths, and many Ways to walk them—variations of the same Path, and like the stars, they are endless. Magick is the sacred flame that scours the fat, rendering the truest self. Superfluous flesh melting away to show the skeleton of one's being. A chance for ascension—apotheosis. Though not every mage works to godhood, if they survive long enough, It is inescapable. Witness the lives of those that tread the knife's edge of self-destruction. Each one intertwined in their search for answers, revenge, and, most of all: power. These individuals have all lost something precious—irreplaceable—and In search of filling the void left behind, they have taken up the mantle of a mage. Per aspera ad astra. Ad mortem vel divinitatis. (Through adversity to the stars. To death or divinity.) There is no consistent release schedule except my consistent inconsistency. Besides, there’s like a thousand pages worth of content, how can—you already read it? Goddamn. Oh, and there is a very long hiatus between volumes as I intend to edit and rewrite a lot. What to Expect: This story is progression fantasy, so expect a healthy dose of training. It's also heavy on slice of life, and it isn't entirely overarching-plot-driven. Expect characters to live their lives, and not always be on some quest to save the world. There's a lot of magic theory and discussion about it in the story. So, if you don't like impromptu lessons on sorcerous theory by traveling monster slayers, this might not be for you. But if you do like it, rejoice! For there is a lot of it. This is also heavy on prose, purple as a bruised eye. I use outdated, uneccesarily collegiate-level terms and play around with the writing style just for the heck of it. I find it fun to wax and wane poetic, and that might grate on you—I don’t plan to change this aspect of the Paths much if at all. Onto the viewer discretion is advised parts: This is grim-dark/ grim-heart. Take the tags seriously. There will be combat scenes that are brutal and horrifying. Fights to the death tend to be. This is a tale about medieval mercenaries (quite literal killers for hire), man-eating monsters, and eldritch gods beyond the material plane. Beside that, there will be traumatic events that are best left unread. I do not detail certain acts I find heinous enough, instead leaving some parts unwritten but still alludded to if not outright stated; there is simply no graphic narration thereof. This is not for the faint of heart.
