《Phantom Path》Chapter 58: Asger The Vanquisher
Advertisement
With his voice like thunder, he commands the soldiers of Verencia their respect, his presence a symbol of fear and great power, the soldiers gazing upon him, no way they'll defeat that, it is impossible, they tell themselves, they pray to the gods, their safety in the hands of their leaders, the captains Arwyn, Victor and Arnaldo, and another joining with his armour of fur bloodied by his enemies, Eyvind wielding his axes, his exposed chest of tattoos glowing as he approaches him.
"Argh! This is definitely a bad omen. The gods will have to grant us extra strength for this one," Eyvind spits, chuckling at the sight of this once great commander.
"We won't be able to defeat him, not without massive loss," Comes another, his sword being drawn on the floor as he goes to stand beside them, the Jacqawin, along with the captains, as the Verencians speedily fall back.
"Jacqawin, I can tell you are the life of the party," Arwyn chuckles.
"De los dioses," Arnaldo swears. "Its flames alone were like tsunamis. Even from far away, I feel its heat"
"Well, I then I believe we have some extinguishing to do," Victor fixes his glasses, Arnaldo laughing as he lifts his sword in the air.
"Indeed. This is what we've trained our lives for, after all. Is it not, hermanos?" Arnaldo smiles, Arwyn going in front, looking at his sword.
"Let's get this show on the road," Arwyn declares, and in a pack of five, shoulders beside one another, they step towards this monolith of an enemy, decaying flesh and bones, not afraid of an enemy woken up from the past, the soldiers watching as these warriors move forward, slowing down their retreat.
"Can they defeat it??" One soldier asks.
"Well...If it was killed before, then it can be killed again," a second replies, looking at the backs of their captains, Asger speaking once more, chuckling at the brave warriors he sees coming forth.
"What the fuck is he saying?" Arwyn challenges.
"He's taunting us," Victor answers, the pages of his book slowly turning.
"Hm! He sure is really lively for someone dead," Eyvind chuckles.
"Ah-his hand is being raised," Arnaldo points out, Asger lifting one hand, and with it more words, runes emerge, dancing in his hand, and summoned, five of them like the men, is called the earth beneath him, a cluster of rocks being stripped by the land, a mighty quake, as formed are giant rocks forms that lift behind Asger, rained down at the men like asteroids conjured from the heavens, majestic blue flames conjured upon them.
"Let's go!' The Jacqawin declares, and so they separate.
One of these asteroids enough to absolutely ruin the Verencian army, the collection of them enough to decimate the entire island, hastily they act, their impacts near, the Jacqawin is the first to deflect this great show of power by the dragon commander, getting atop a higher point, his black sword swung through the air, he leaps towards this catastrophic descent, slicing the first in half, saved from his fall by a ghostly creature that catches him, a wyvern spirit he sees, its skin cold and like the wind, swirls engraved on it, summoned by Eyvind whose tattoos glow, and his eyes brighter. The rock split in half, weaker in this form, the sorcerers and sorceresses of the Verencian army work together in finishing it off, disintegrating it with fire magic. Out of the tattoo on his back, he summons another, a bear twice his size, its head fitted with the horns of a ram, and swirls of tattoos like the other summoned, the bear roars, its hand pulled back with a great punch that lifts the area of impact, rocks are flung up by the sheer force of its fist, it blasts away the asteroid, the structure breaking into pieces that are projected back at the enemies beneath it, crashing into their lines. Arnaldo laughs, veins strengthening in his legs, as into the air he leaps, against the wind and into the asteroid with his shield.

"You compliment me! Us reptiles love the heat!" Arnaldo says, crashing into the asteroid then onto unlucky enemies beneath, his impact breaking their bones at the force of his fall.
Two left, it is Victor who soars through at one of them, the book by his side paused at pages inscribed with the old language he speaks, his hand hands forming signs as he flows them together, suddenly Asger grunts, a strange pulse he feels, then sensing as behind him, appears the structure switched with a flock of birds. And with Arwyn's lifted sword, pointing it at the hurdling rock, its force lifting his cape through the drift of wind, his sword glows brightly like the morning, an invisible force pushed against the structure that begins to burn up even more, slowed down even, Arwyn grunting, as even more power he gives, the rock eaten by golden flames that emerges, and like a meteorite, it burns out into the atmosphere, a spectacle seen by all witnessing this great battle, Bjørn amongst them, muttering his astonishment. Impressed, Asger laughs, his hand raised once more, and with the command by his hand, halted is the asteroid Victor had thrown back at him, its structure crumbling down back to the land, no longer of use to the dragon. And positioned across the battlefield, the five warriors gaze upon the dragon who deems these men his worthy opponents, these five now comprehending the power of this great dragon commander. Suddenly they feel a pulse within themselves, all five of them, Arwyn smiling as it is a familiar presence they feel.
"This one is a powerful opponent, Commander Vernon," Eyvind states, his lips moving, but the commander nowhere near him. "I'm sure when I speak for all of us...it took a good chunk of our power to get rid of those rocks"
"Hm! Do not fret!" Vernon tells them, still at the main base of their operation, through the means of a woman meditating, a rune floating before her, speaking telepathically through her ability. "You men are the greatest I have on this battlefield. A Difficult opponent or not! I don't see you losing"
"Aw, thank you, commander," Arwyn smiles.
"With your skills, your different abilities, your strengths, your weaknesses-You five will have to work even closer than ever; Asger the Vanquisher should not be underestimated; A major mistake will cost you your life, and the lives of our soldiers. Through this telepathic link, you will do so; be one with each other and fight as a true team," Vernon commands, and through his telepathic link, they all hear, to their surprise, the puff of his cigar, their morale even greater than before, the old wolf has returned from his dormant state.
And at his command, they move onward to their enemy, and telepathically they communicate their strategies to one another, and quickly they become synchronized, the corpse of Asger, understanding of how united they are, fights against a team that puts on the pressure, giving him no breathing room as they attack from every point, Victor with hand signs multiplying himself in many that cast flames towards the dragon that deflects with the sheer power of his mana, Victor and his clones keeping the force on of continuous firepower, Asger's tail swung towards his many selves that shatter into pure mana, the dragon attacking another Victor, this one quickly casting a shield spell that blocks the fist of the corpse, the actual knight blown back by his physical strength. Surprised, Asger suffers more damage by Eyvind that flies in with spiritual wings, merged with his familiar as one of his axes cuts the face of the great dragon who tries to swat the captain away, cursing in the old tongue, Eyvind gets to a higher point, his wings gone in exchange for strength that comes in the form of the bear cloaked onto him like skin, his axes strongly gripped in his hands, he drops down in striking the great foe, met with Asger's hand blocking his attack, a clash commences, Asger's scales like great steel, the dragon struck behind by another, the Jacqawin jumping onto him using one of Eyvind's other wyverns, holding onto one of his horns, with his great blade striking with one clean cut nearing one of Asger's wings.

With a great roar, Asger lets out, the Jacqawin is shaken off with Eyvind flung away, the pressure of the throw difficult for him to regain his balance, his sense of direction is thrown out of whack which enables him to summon a wyvern, but to safety he gets, caught by a the verencian soldiers who telekinetically catches him, the soldier blowing down to how difficult it was to catch him who was like a fly being swatted. And also falling through the sky, the Jacqawin watches as Asger nears for him, his mouth open to ready a feast on the dark knights whose hands clutch to his cape, but away from the danger he's whisked up by a sorceress who telekinetically grabs him. The soldiers being their support, Evyind smiles, but Asger furious, his irritation conveyed through his eyes, he is then clutched by chains of energy that is sprouted out of the earth, it is Victor who returns, Asger growl and snarls, feeling as his mana is being suppressed, as still, how dare these fodders get in the way of his fun? Victor conveys to the Jacqawin that he is going after the soldiers, as easily Asger breaks free from these chains, and straight for the warriors rounded at the Jacqawin, the Dark Knight races towards the dragon, and head to head they meet, the Jacqawi's hand pressed onto the head of the dragon's decaying corpse, the earth beneath them shattered at the power of their clash, the Jacqawin's feet lifted off the ground from his might, the Jacqawin catching back his balance with a great roar, stopping the dragon in its tracks.
Asger snarls and he roars, trying to set free from the Knight that bears him to his face, the Jacqawin grunts, its breath growing hotter against his armour that works to cool him down, it is fire he sees evolving. The Jacqawin feels the weight of the corpse cut in half, he lets go, a message conveyed to him, as on the other side, it is Arnaldo who grabs hold of Asger's tail. With his great strength, the Lizardman lifts the dragon into the air, smashing him into the enemy side, then swinging him back into the air where he crashes down into a hill, Arnaldo leaping into the air, and in multiple jumps, sprinting and launching off the walls of rocks, down into the Dragon's chest he smashes into, crashing Asger deeper into the hillside, the dead dragon commander crying out as he swats off the lizardman, lifting back into the sky, cursing once more, screeching as slashed is his iron skin, by Arwyn he sees running atop the hills, sheathing his sword as he conjures flames to help him travel from hill to hill, as the dragon attacks him with fire he rains down at him, Asger growing frustrated, swooping down at the knight himself, Arwyn's sword drawn out, and lifted by his hands, commanding the sword to shine a light as great as the rising sun, all witnessing the sword's glory that stops the dragon in his track, its light lustrous, its light alone enough to feel Asger feel as his skin is burning away, his body resisting against its powerful and holy glow like fight a powerful blizzard that washes over him, with a bask of rainbow and glitters that mesmerize the soldiers that watches from beneath, hope, they see in this sword of light, while they continue the battle beneath, the monsters of hell being effect by the light all the same, the women of darkness as well. Chains sprouted from the earth once again, it is Victor who captures the corpse once more, the dragon's magic suppressed as his hands are pulled back, exposed fully to the light of Arwyn's holy magic, its skin showing signs of the heat of holiness destroying it as its scales heat up to a great red state, the dragon shout echoing through the land at his pain.
"It's working!" Arnaldo comes, at the side of Arwyn, joined by the Jacqawin and Eyvind.
Victor floating atop the dragon with his hands formed in a sign, trembling as he fights to keep control of the dragon, his lips pressed to one another, his eyes squinted behind his glasses, his core tightening, warmed by the light of Arwyn's sword with the wind at his reinforced suit. And one word Asger shouts, Victor becomes startled, and quickly he conveys a message to the rest of them, cautioning them to what comes next as devastated becomes the earth. "Break!", Victor hears, the floor of Blackshore breaking apart through the entire battlefield and beyond, a powerful earthquake erupting, its sound like a howl from the land, soldiers and enemies alike falling into the great abyss that opens beneath them. Arwyn and the rest are lucky with Victor's sharpness, as they quickly get to solid ground, the Dragon breaks free of Victor's oppression once more, Victor's hands extended forward with one eye open, exhausted of mana as the dragon charges straight for Arwyn who looks up with fear in his eyes for the fight time in this battle, quickly lifting his sword to Asger who thrusts one hand forward, his mana force, that even braces away the clouds above, descending onto knight who clashes it with his own, the light deflecting the dragon's attack, Arwyn yelling under the strength of this force like a nuclear bomb dropped from a plane, Victor coming to him with lending his remaining strength, adding to Arwyn's mana, Eyvind, the Jacqawin and Arnaldo joining as well. But not even there unified power pushes him back, his force seeming stronger at every minute, these invisible forces clashing, the men shouting in unison, relieved, as they watch the dragon's face is met with a fist that plummets it to the ground. The men drop to their knees, all breathing heavily, their bodies weakened from everything they've given.
"Took you long enough, you old drunk!!" Arwyn shouts, their saviour grinning, clearing his throat.
"Agh! Look at the damage you've done! The sacrifices of my soldiers will not be in vain!" He speaks, Asger stunned by that surprise of an attack that he struggles to get up from, hearing as his attacker chuckles. "Asger the Vanquisher! It is an honour to meet you in battle, great commander, or at least what's left of ya"
Many of the soldiers safe and crawling from the abyss, they shout in joy, lifting their hands in unison, they cheer his name, as the man that has joined the battlefield is of dwarf blood, their Vice Commander Gunnar.
"Now! Come forth, my enemy! For now, you face me! Gunnar the grappler!!" Gunnar declares, the dragon in a fit of rage rushing against the vice of Strongcastle, Gunnar laughs, knowing this is a battle he is going to enjoy, his fist clashes with Asger's, a powerful gust of wind breaking out, the floor beneath the crack, as giants of the war.

Magriculture
When Aurum Industries announced the first Full Immersion Virtual Reality Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game (FIVRMMORPG if you're hip) Limitless Online, most people saw it as an opportunity to live out their sword and sorcery fantasies. John, however, saw it as the opening of a new and as of yet uncrowded job market. One he was willing, and eager, to exploit. Determined to make money through virtual hard work and effort, John sets his sights not on the heights of magic or the perfection of the sword, but instead upon the tilling of the soil and the sowing of seeds as he explores the wide and wonderful world of magical agriculture all from the comfort of his own bed. Disclaimer: This is, at best, a very rough draft. I have already had to do one major rewrite and several minor rewrites of entire sections of the story, and it is a virtual certainty I will have to do re-writes again. Such changes may be as small as editing a few numbers (such as going back and changing how much mana an object holds) or it may force me to re-write entire chapters (this has happened once already, and I'm really hoping it doesn't happen again, but... life). Minor re-writes will probably never be posted here. Major rewrites probably will.Anyway, what this boils down to is: If you're looking for a fully cohesive story with few to no errors and publisher level editing, this is not the story for you. If your looking for a cohesive plot that's more than "Man farms, man farms, man farms well, man maybe makes money" you're probably also in the wrong place, but I will attempt to entertain you anyway.

Badass
At the end of everything, Taylor Hebert realized something. She didn't want to be a superhero. No, she wanted to be a badass. And then her prayers were answered. Imbued with the power of mimetic badassery and the ability to channel a different real-life badass every week, she set out in search for all the best things in life - well, according to Conan, at least. Modeling herself after Conan have been a mistake. Join her on her high-octane, pulp-fiction journey for vengeance, adventure, victory and mayhem. This isn't just uncensored. It's anti-censored! =========================== (Worm/Fate/Badass of the Week) Warning: crack-taken-seriously, over-the-top pulp-fiction style violence, overpowered protagonist, banned on two other sites. Hell, even the light-hearted omake jokes in this were considered too subversive to persist. ============================ AN: There’s this really, really excellent website called Badass of the Week. I’ve wasted many an hour browsing through, marveling at all the crazy shit some humans are capable of. Check it out, then come back and read this in a few days when the awesome starts to wear off. It’s worth it (all 576 entries). Back? Good! Anyways, I was looking through it recently while thinking about who I wanted to make expy’s of for my The Flying Dutchman quest ship captains (which now languishes in indefinite hiatus), and I had this idea. What if Taylor, wanting to be a badass, triggered with the power to be a different Badass every week? With a bit of Fate-style ability to draw on the tools associated with the legend (but to a just marginally less ridiculous degree), and a drive and aura to be and do badass? And thus, Badass was born in it’s somewhat cracky glory. Enjoy.
