《His Solace (Book 3) On Hold》Chapter Ten

"What do you mean you can't find it?" I all but yelled at Victoria as she rummaged through the file drawer that was next to her computer. She pushed a strand of red hair behind her ear, groaning slightly.
She swiveled her chair back in my direction, holding her hands up. "All I'm saying is that it was here this morning..annnd, now it's not."
I wanted to rip her hair out. "Victoria! How in the world do you just lose the keys to your car?"
Victoria went back to searching in her desk drawers. "I didn't lose them, I just kinda misplaced them."
"Which means you lost them." I stared back just as snarky as a knock came from the side of the cubicle.
Jason was leaning against the side of the white cubicle. He wore a pair of khaki pants as always and a checkered red and blue dress shirt with a black tie. He smiled brightly when he caught me staring. "Good afternoon ladies," his deep voice brought me out of my trance, "How's your day been?" He questioned.
"Worse now that you showed up." Victoria said under her breath, quiet enough for only me to hear. Seriously, what was her problem? A few weeks ago she had been just as obsessed with Jason as I had been, and now since Lee came along she's been treating Jason like an annoying parasite.
I scratched the side of my head, "Well it was going good until Victoria lost her car keys. Since she can't find them we might have to walk home today."
Jason stood up straighter at my comment. "I can drive you guys home."
"Really? You could-" I started as Victoria opened her mouth.
"Oh, no thanks, we like walking. It keeps our cardiovascular system in good shape and keeps the bowels moving after lunch." She said patting her stomach, Jason gave her an awkward nod, shifting his attention back to me. "Maybe next time." He stated, more than asking. I inwardly groaned, before smiling tightly.
"Yeah, thanks anyways." I commented as he gave a final wave and turned to leave.
I shifted my body back around to Victoria. She was sitting with her legs crossed, her hands resting on her knees. "What?" She asked with a shrug.
"What?" I questioned, "What was that all about?"
"I just like walking after lunch." She said simply. I rolled my eyes.

"Not that, what was with the snide comments?"
"Look, I just don't like Jason, alright?"
I practically fell over. "Whatever. Just last week you were sitting in this cubicle drooling all over him like I had been. What's your problem, Victoria? Ever since the whole Lee thing you've been really giving Jason a hard time."
She sighed loudly. "Fine, I just don't like Jason for you." She replied, "okay, I said it."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
"It means that Jason was great and everything in the beginning, but now he's just..eh. Where as Lee on the other hand, I think he might really like you. The way he looked at you that day in the bathroom. What sober guy proposes to a random girl, Simone? He had to have felt something deep for you, otherwise he wouldn't have done it."
"Victoria, he probably only did it because he thought he'd get in my pants." I shook my head, "please just let this whole Lee thing go. It's been weeks since I last saw him. We most likely have nothing in common and we're not attached or anything. For goodness sakes, he's a rockstar. What do I look like dating him?"
"Simone." She started.
I held my hand up. "Just please drop it, I don't have time to entertain a fantasy, Victoria."
Victoria opened her mouth, then closed it. She pointed a finger at me, a frown settling upon her face. "It's not fantasy, it's reality. I'm telling you to take a chance, Simone. When will this ever happen again? What if this is the love story of a life time?" She asked dramatically.
I stacked some of the papers off to the side. "And what if it isn't?" I retorted.
She shrugged. "Even if it isn't and things don't work out between the two of you, wouldn't that still be a story to tell?" She asked before adding, "But then again, what if somehow it all worked out and you found a love like no other? A love that people write about, Simone." She said desperately.
I let out a short sigh, listening to her words. She was still not seeing the big picture, but her words were sincere. I looked up at her. "Well, even if I did want to get in contact with him, how would I do that? I don't exactly have his number." I commented just as Victoria snapped her fingers, a smirk slowly making itself onto her lips.

"So you're saying that you would give Lee a chance if you could get in touch with him, right?"
I rolled my eyes. I mean, I guess? It wasn't like I would see him again, even if he had wanted to see me again, which he probably didn't. I bobbled my head in her direction. "Yeah, I suppose I would give him a chance, just to see what he's actually like, but I really don't think-"
She shook her head, her red curls flying around her face. "Uh-huh. Say no more." She said pulling a tiny white sheet of paper from her desk drawer and holding it out to me.
I grabbed the small piece of paper from her, unfolding it slowly until it revealed several black numbers. I glanced up at her, "What is this?" I asked in confusion.
"Well, it's a phone number, duh." She replied, waving a hand.
I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, but whose phone number?" I repeated.
She sat her hands on the top of her knees innocently, looking me right in the face as she replied. "Oh, just Lee's." She said with no shame.
I quickly looked over my shoulder and then back at her, shock clearly written all over my face. "Victoria," I whispered harshly, "Why and when did you even have the time to get his number?" I asked in disbelief, "Why do you even have it?" I repeated again.
She spun around in her chair as she replied. "Well, you remember that day in the bathroom?"
"Yeah." I replied.
"Well, after we left work that day and went home, I went back out to the store because Brian wanted me to cook and you know that I don't cook-"
"Get on with it, Victoria."
She stopping spinning around and sighed. "Well, while I was at the store, I may have run into him while he was in one of his disguises. Of course I approached him first and we talked for a while and-"
"Victoria." I snapped.
"Okay okay, and I said 'Hey, you know what would be cool?' And he said 'What?' And I said, 'if you gave me your phone number so that I could give it to my best friend, Simone.' And well, he gave it to me, and I also might've mentioned to him that you had been planning to go to the fair a few weeks ago, and well, here we are now." She finished, letting her arms fall to her sides. "Cute story right."
The side of my eye twitched. "So it was all because of you that I ran into Lee that day at the fair?" I asked incredulously.
Her mouth popped open. "Oh wow, I didn't think that he would actually go. I was just making conversation during the second time we met." She said amazed, "But oh my gosh, he went to the fair to see you." She squealed loudly, turning around in her chair once more. "You have to call him."
I shook my head. "Victoria, Lee going to the fair means nothing, maybe he just really wanted to go and enjoy the rides and scenery." I trailed off, not reallly believing myself.
Victoria pursed her lips. "Yeah, because Lee totally seems like the type to enjoy the scenery of kids barfing and loud and noisy fair rides." She said blandly. "I mean, I know he's a rockstar and all but he honestly doesn't seem like the type to spend his free time at the fair without a cause."
I inwardly groaned at her comment. Maybe she was right. Maybe Lee had an inkling of interest towards me - and on the other hand, maybe she was way off and he was just bored.
I rubbed my hand against my forehead. What could it hurt? It wasn't like I was going to go on a date with him. I kinda felt like I owed him an apology for being so rude after he had saved me the other day from choking on that corn dog - of course, it had been his fault in the first place. I thought annoyed.
Maybe we could just hang out until he left, as friends, or better yet, acquaintances. That is if he was even looking for one of those.
I sighed loudly when I caught Victoria staring at me expectantly. "So?" She asked, sitting forward in her chair as if it would somehow help her hear better.
I squeezed the piece of paper in my hand, before nodding.
"Okay, I'll give him a call."
