《His Solace (Book 3) On Hold》Chapter Nine

"And then he said, well, why don't you just open it with your mouth."
I laughed loudly as I walked next to Jason. We had been at the fair for almost an hour and a half now. We had already rode pretty much everything. Now we were just walking around, talking and getting to know each other.
Apparently Jason had two older brothers who were always getting him in trouble when he was younger.
I swallowed the piece of corndog in my mouth before speaking. "Please tell me you didn't use your mouth?" I practically snorted.
He gave a pained expression before we both burst out into a fit of giggles. After we had wiped our tears away, he stood up and nodded towards the restroom.
"I'm going to go to the bathroom real quick. Will you be fine by yourself for a few minutes?" He asked.
I nodded. "Don't worry, I'll still be here when you get back."
He shot me an amused look. "Well, I would hope so." He laughed before heading towards the bathroom and through the doors.
I stood around, watching as people passed by laughing and smiling. Today had actually been really fun. I took another bite of my corn dog, the hot treat burning against my teeth. I was too consumed in the delicious treat that I hadn't been paying attention to the person who suddenly walked up behind me, his cool breath fanning against my neck.
"So you're having a good time, I'm guessing?" A deep voice asked from over my shoulder, causing me to choke on my corn dog.
Strong arms wrapped around my stomach pulling inwards and upwards until the tiny piece of corndog flew out of my mouth and onto the black pavement.
I coughed a few times, my eyes watering slightly. When I had regained my composure, I turned around to the man who had saved me and caused this whole mess.

"Look here," I started, the words dying in my throat as I took in the man before me.
He wore a simple red baseball cap and a pair of sun glasses and short black pants with a white t-shirt.
I started to turn around and act like I had never seen this strange man, when I noticed those familiar dark eyes behind the sunglasses.
Oh my, "Lee?" I whispered harshly, not wanting to be heard by the people walking around us.
He nodded, shoving his hands into his pant pockets.
"What are you doing here?"
He shrugged. "I like the fair."
I eyed him skeptically. "Seriously?"
"I'm a rockstar. For me to like going to the fair isn't abnormal. If anything I should be somewhere more daring, right?"
"It doesn't fit you." I replied honestly.
His lip quirked up slightly. "And pray tell why it doesn't fit me?"
"You're too quiet. Like it seems like you would enjoy something more calm, like being locked away in a room with a book." I explained, "Not around all this noise." I waved my arms around me.
He actually smirked at that. "Well, maybe you don't really know me as well as you think you do."
"Well, I-"
"Simone." A voice called loudly, and my head snapped around to see Jason walking over, a strange look on his face.
When he approached, he was frowning. "Who were you talking to?"
"He's," I started, before looking back to my right to see that Lee was gone. "No one," I said softly, "He was just asking for directions on how to get out of here." I lied easily.
He rubbed the back of his head.
"Okay. Just wanted to make sure it wasn't some weirdo." He laughed, "So what do you want to do now? Ride some more rides or get a funnel cake?" He began naming off things.

"Funnel cake." I immediately replied.
When we made it to the stand, I took out some money to pay for the funnel cake, when Jason's hand stopped me.
"No need. I was serious when I said you wouldn't have to pay for anything today."
"But then this would seem like a date, and it's not." I reminded him.
He chuckled, handing the man some money. "You need to learn to relax a little. It's no big deal, really." He assured me.
I gave up and put my money back into my purse. As I pulled my hand out, something snagged against the sleeve of my blue jean jacket and fell to the ground.
"What was that?" Jason questioned.
I bent down to pick up whatever it was, when Jason's hand reached it before I did. He let out a long breath as he stood up, inspecting the shiny trinket.
"This is a huge ring." He whistled, "Is it yours?"
I quickly took it from him, shoving it back into my purse. "Yeah, it was a gift from a friend." I lied.
His eyes widened. "Well, that was sure some gift. Are you sure you're not hiding a secret marriage from me or something?" He joked.
I laughed along with him awkwardly. "Haa..no, my friend just bought me this ring for my birthday. Nothing special." I tried to play it cool.
"It looks expensive."
"Nah, it's fake," I lied again. Man I was getting good at that. "It's super old too and just turns my finger green whenever I wear it. I had meant to throw it out yesterday, but I must've forgot." I desperately wanted to drop this conversation before he realized that I was lying.
Fortunately, Jason finally seemed happy with my response and broke off a piece of funnel cake, placing it into his mouth.
He held the plate out to me. "Want some?"
I broke a piece off and began eating as we started to walk. Jason had started telling another story, but my mind couldn't seem to stay focused on what he was saying.
"I promise I'll never eat another chicken and tuna burrito ever again," he went on. I simply gave an 'mhm' here and there.
I really wanted to give him all of my attention, but at las, it seemed like it was going to be impossible - all thanks to a certain someone, who always seemed to pop up a few feet away from us during the remainder of the time we stayed at the fair.
That red baseball cap giving him away every.single.time.
