《His Solace (Book 3) On Hold》Prologue

"Jason, from accounting, five o'clock." Victoria whispered pointing to the tall, dark skinned man that was currently bending over to pick up the water jug that was lying on the floor. I watched as his tight blue checkered shirt stressed against his hard body, his muscles flexing as he centered the jug onto the black dispenser. Victoria let out a sigh, her bright red hair swaying around her shoulders as she swiveled back around to face me.
"He's so hot." She fanned herself, "Makes me really wish that I had paid more attention in math class when I was in college, I could've been in his department."
I rolled my eyes, glancing over my small cubicle at Jason. He now had a styrofoam cup filled with water and was in a deep conversation with one of his coworkers. I sighed dreamily. "I just wish I had the courage to go up and talk to him. I've been working here for a year now and the only thing he's ever said to me is Hey, you're the coffee girl." I said blandly, remembering the first time he had spoken to me and it had happened to be the day that I had accidentally spilled my coffee all over his khaki pants. He had been a real gentleman about it and quickly made sure that I knew he wasn't mad, but I was too lost in his dark chocolate eyes to make a coherent sentence before he walked away, back out of my life, again.
I hit my head against the cool gray desk that sat in front of me. Victoria's blue eyes softened a bit as she looked over at me.
"Oh, it wasn't that bad. Plus we all make mistakes, you'll get your chance." She assured me as she pulled out her phone. "Speaking of hot guys, did you see that that famous rockstar Lee is visiting our town for a concert this week? Isn't it exciting? Nothing great ever happens here." She said grinning from ear to ear.

My ears perked up at her comment. I knew Lee, who didn't? He was a drummer of the band, The Passengers. He was Chinese and had made a pretty big name for himself. He didn't talk much whenever he and his group members did tv interviews, but he was so good looking that he didn't need to.
"Simone, are you listening." Victoria snapped her fingers, "Boss says we have to be down for the meeting in five. You got all of your stuff together?"
I grabbed the files laying across my desk and stood up. "Yeah, just let me run to the copy room real quick. I'll meet you down there in a few." I said hurriedly as I made my way down the long hallway, until I had reached the copy room. I was in such a hurry that I didn't stop to see the man that was standing in the doorway. I hit him from behind and my papers went everywhere. I groaned, pushing myself up from the floor. A hand moved into my line of vision.
"Need some help?" The deep voice asked politely. I recognized the voice, looking up into those dark eyes. Recognition flashed through his eyes as he stared down at me. "Coffee girl, right?" He asked, still holding out his hand.
I blushed slightly, reaching up to take his hand. He pulled me to my feet and picked up my papers as I straightened my cream colored blouse. "Uh, yeah - no." I mumbled embarrassedly, "My name's Simone." I offered.
He held my papers out in front of me. "Well, Simone, it was nice running into you again." He joked as I grabbed the papers from his large hands.
I pushed a strand of hair behind my ear as I smiled up nervously at him. "I'm really sorry. I don't know why I always end up turning into a ditzy klutz whenever you're around."

Jason laughed, his laughter ringing throughout the copy room. He glanced down at me, his eyes twinkling. "Really, it's no problem." He said again. He nodded towards the door, "Well, I gotta get back to my department before Arnold comes looking for me." He rolled his eyes.
Arnold was head over the accounting department. He was a short and stubby man in his late thirties who still lived with his mom and always sported a beer belly. He wasn't the most efficient manager, but somehow he had gotten the job and had been working for the company for at least ten years.
Jason gave me another smile, this time his bright white teeth making an appearance. "I hope to see you around more often, but without the whole running into each other thing." He waved as he headed out of the room.
I stood frozen in my spot, staring down the empty hallway, willing myself to believe that this all wasn't just a dream. When the copy machine beeped, I snapped out of my trance and remembered the papers in my hands.
I had some copies to make.

The Stormcrow Cycle
Once a powerful and lauded witch, Ba'an salu-Ba'an now lives alone in a cave in the desert, waiting to die. When she rescues an outlander from certain death she becomes embroiled in a deadly game of politics and empire, of heart and soul, but worst of all--of hope and love and a chance at a peaceful future. Can a disgraced witch find a reason to live her life again--and if so, what price must she pay? The Stormcrow Cycle is a trilogy comprising of The Exile, The Lion, and Abomination. Tags or genres for each book: The Exile: romance, slice-of-life The Lion: romance, slice-of-life, politics Abomination: tragedy, high/epic fantasy (aka "Everything is on fire!") Updates once a week whenever I have time. Cross-posted on Wattpad and Scribble Hub. The CBMokedi cover will return! Excerpt: She looked down at him again. Young. Healthy, from what she could see, except for the wound that was killing him. He was handsome in a way that suggested a life of wealth and plenty. She did not think he had ever starved. Someone important. Her shadow fell across him, and he frowned. Blearily, he opened his eyes. They were amber and bright, even as he lay dying in the dirt. She could feel his soul, blazing inside of him like a fire refusing to die even as his body began to fail. He met her gaze, eyes widening in what she guessed was surprise—or shock. But he never looked away, staring up at her as though transfixed. Ba’an made her decision. She raised her hand and covered his eyes. In another moment, a murder of crows cawed as they took wing. The man and woman were gone from the road, leaving only the dead staring up into the sky. Note: This is a high-fantasy set in a low-magic world. The first book is largely character-driven and we really only hit the real plot in Book II, so if you're not fond of long epic yarns you ought to skip this one. I also don't include trigger warnings, but mind the "traumatizing content" tag--all societies minus one practice slavery and the world is indeed, rather grim!
