《BLOODTHIRSTY》28. Growing to like and to love

Days have gone by already and she still did not speak to Lazarus. That man had anger running through his veins, and it seemed like someone had to save him from himself. However he did not want to be saved, he didn't want any help. In fact he found joy in being blinded by anger. His only explanation behind his actions was revenge. Yet Winter found it hard to understand.
Perhaps she will never be able to understand since she was not in his shoes. Maybe she would have understood only a fraction of his motive if she understood where he was coming from. Winter wanted to understand his side of the story, see things in his perspective. However he did not want to talk to her anymore. Lazarus has been avoiding her in the castle. She could hear the echoes of his voice around the castle ,but when she looked at the place where the sound was coming from he was no where in sight.
Winter sat outside in the garden. Looking at flowers that were dying. Covered in frost and slowly breaking off. She was supposed to stay inside and play hide and seek with the kids, however she found herself sitting outside instead. Looking at the beauty of winter but at the same time watching its distraction. Amazed at how the cold weather makes people depressed however it has its own way of cheering people up.
"You will get sick if you stay outside Winter." The first time she heard the man's voice in days. Winter looked up in surprise. Expensive suit with his hands in his pockets.
"You ignored me for days." Winter said annoyed and looked away from him. Not wanting to give the man more of her time.
Winter could hear him laugh. "Are you sulking?" He asked her however she did not answer back. She ignored him just like he had done for the past days.
"I was busy with...things. No need to get mad at me beloved." The man sat down besides Winter and stared in front of him. Watching flowers lose their colour.
"I'm wondering how long it will take for me to fall apart, or for you to fall apart." Winter spoke up and stared at the snow covering the grass in the garden.
"Why are you wondering about such a thing?" Lazarus asked the human girl with a trace of worry hidden in his words.
"I'm sitting outside being comfortable with a man that just kidnapped me. I'm not sure how to feel about anything that is going on anymore. The worst part is that you won't talk to me or at least tell me what has been worrying you so much. I know It's not in my place, because I'm just a silly human girl that share her kindness with everyone even when I'm not supposed to. However if I'm not being the kind one than who will?" Winter breathed out to calm herself down. She didn't want to rant to a man that she didn't even know that well. However she felt so alone, she has always felt alone.
"I know you are not telling me something that may or may not concern me. Perhaps you have your reasons for being quiet but isn't this all tiring?" Winter looked up at the man with raised eyebrows. "Because I know I'm tired." Winter looked away from the man. Knowing well she was overstepping her boundaries. She could feel a warm hand pulling her curly hair backwards. Lazarus wasn't smiling, most of the time his smiles looked so fake. So right now he didn't bother masking his feelings.

"One day you will understand everything that is going on. However that day is not today." Lazarus stood up and wanted to leave the girl behind however he could feel something pulling his blazer.
"This is not fair, you can't just keep everything from me." Winter said annoyed and Lazarus raised his eyebrows. He didn't like it when people ruined his clothes.
"Life isn't fair my beloved, you will have to just deal with it." He told her and walked away. Leaving the girl outside in the cold with cravings for answers she will perhaps never get.
She was alone again and feeling like a prisoner. Winter wanted to stay positive and optimistic yet she couldn't help herself when she could feel her heart ache in her chest. She had pushed the thoughts in the back of her head. Not wanting to remember because remembering would only hurt more. However she missed her brother, and her friends. She missed the way Arculus would hold her in his arms. His arms that made her feel so safe and loved. Winter took a deep breath and walked back inside. In the hope she would find something to distract her from her own thoughts.
"You're cheating Atalia." Rohan said annoyed while staring at the small girl.
"No I'm not, you are cheating." She protested and crossed her arms.
"Ugh shut up already." Rohan said annoyed and walked away from the pair.
"Shut up yourself." Atalia crossed her arm and looked pissed off.
Rohan raised his eyebrows and took her favourite teddybear and held it above her head. Making the young girl jump up and down just to try and take her toy back. However she wasn't able to which resorted to the girl screaming loudly.
"Rohan." Rogan looked at his brother with glowing blue eyes, daring Rohan to go on with his foolishness.
Rohan rolled his eyes and dropped the teddybear on the floor, making the girl pick it up. "You're a meanie." The girl said annoyed and turned away.
"Winter." The black haired girl Called out to her.
"Look what I just made." The small girl said happily and Winter looked at a drawing. Lente was pretty talented.
"It pretty Lente, you are going to be an artist when you grow up." Winter told the small girl and the girl giggled.
After dinner Winter thought it would be a good idea to finally play hide and seek with the kids. She knew she would be terrible at finding the kids, with their vampire powers. Yet she still wanted to play with all of them. In the hope she would put the kids at ease. Everyone ran away to hide somewhere, however she could tell even with her eyes closed that the twins where still behind her. When she was done with counting she opened her eyes, and Winter was right. Winter looked up at the twins with raised eyebrows. She wasn't sure if she was imagining it, but it felt like they have grown overnight.
"Vampire kids grow faster miss." Rogan told her with a smile on his face.
Winter smiled and the young boy. "I can see that, and don't call me miss. You make me feel so old." Winter said annoyed but couldn't help the smile appearing on her face.
"I'm sorry." Rogan said truthfully.
Rohan was looking at the two with crossed arms and a frown on his face. Looking angry even when he wasn't feeling anger at all. "Y-you want us to help you look for the kids? Since you lack the skill to do it yourself." Rohan asked her and Winter was surprised. This was the first time he had actually talked to her. She wasn't sure if she was supposed to be offended, however she was happy he was opening up to her.

Winter smiled at the boy. The same boy that seemed cold and angry at the world. He was a sweet young kid, and in some way he was still coping. "Yeah sure." Winter told him and he nodded simply.
The search for the kids was difficult. Not for the twin brothers since they have found Atalia and Lente already. However the youngest kid, Raul was no where to be found and she was growing worried. She checked all rooms in the castle. The kitchen and the place that Lazarus had given to the kids as a playroom. She checked outside and even checked all of the bathrooms in this castle. Yet there was no sight of him.
"Boys I can find him, where is he?" Winter asked out loud, making it clear to everyone she was panicking.
"No need to worry miss, we can find him." Rogan tried to reassure Winter however to Winter kids where kids. It didn't matter if it possessed some kind of super powers. A child was still a child.
Winter wandered around in the castle. Her footsteps could be heard by everyone with good hearing. A worried heart and she wasn't so sure why. As long the kid was in the castle, he could be safe right. Nothing or no one would be able to harm him as long he is in the castle. Yet she couldn't help herself and overthink the situation. A child that has been traumatised hiding alone. Perhaps it wasn't a good idea after all to play hide and seek.
"Winter, look I found him." Atalia said happily and smiled widely from ear to ear.
Raul was shivering and seemed to be afraid. Winter took the boy in her arms and looked around to find what was scaring him so much. However she couldn't find anything. Winter walked with the boy in her arms to the playroom. All the kids where already there. Rogan looked up at the kid.
"He will be fine Miss, no need to worry to much. He probably was scared of being all alone." Rogan spoke up with sadness in his eyes.
It bothered Winter so much to see every child hurting deeply inside, and there was nothing that she could do about it. She wanted to take them all in her arms because to her they all needed it. She wasn't sure if she was supposed to despise Lazarus for this. However she did hate him for doing this. This kids deserved so much better.
"You don't need to feel bad for us Miss, we don't need any pity. The king took our parents away from us but it doesn't mean they were any good to us." Rogan spoke up with anger on the type of his tongue. His eyes Winter got so used to seeing was glowing.
"Calm down Rogan." Rohan said calmly. Winter really wasn't used to hearing him talk. The only times Rohan would open his mouth, it was when he was angry or annoyed. Other than those times the young man was completely silent.
"What he did still isn't right." Winter said truthfully and looked away from the kids.
Winter didn't like being in this castle. However the kids made her happy. It reminded her of her and Gio. When they were kids how she never wanted to do something without him. She would always follow her older brother like a lost puppy. The kids all did the same, following the twins like lost puppies. Winter understood why, those boys have been taking care of them. They younger kids probably think of the twins as their brother. It was a beautiful sight to see but also somewhere heartbreaking. Because they were all kids. The twins deserved a childhood too.
This bothered Winer because the boys thought they were responsible of the younger kids. Which to Winter wasn't the problem here, however they take care of all the younger kids and Winter can't help it but wonder who will take care of them. Even if they were 15 already, they were still kids.
"I know I'm not really useful. However if you guys need to talk. If you ever need something just ask okay?" Winter spoke up and the kids nodded their heads.
"In that case can I-"
"No Atalia no chocolate, it's almost bed time. I promise I'll give you some tomorrow." Winter told the child with wild curly hair and darker skin.
Atalia pouted but still nodded her head. Winter stood up and lead the kids to their rooms. Making sure they actually were about to sleep instead of talking all night long. Right before she walked away Atalia stepped out of her bed and came crashing In her arms. Winter was surprised but still hugged her back.
"Thank you." Atalia said while smiling up at her. With bright glowing eyes and a smile that she could only compare to the stars.
"I know mommy and dad won't be coming back. So I just wanted to say thank you for taking care of us." Winter did her best not to cry in front of the kid. She never expected this at all.
"No need to thank me Atalia. I'll always be here if you need me. Now go back to bed." Winter said smiling while holding back her tears.
Atalia jumped back in her bed, and Winter closed the lights in the room. When she closed the door behind her, she did her best not to cry. Vampires have good hearing, they will hear her if she did cry. She didn't want to worry them, so Winter breathed in and out a couple of times to calm herself down. However after she checked the boys and was making her way to her own room, she could feel tears rolling down her cheeks. Blurring her vision and feeling her heart sink down her chest. Winter knew crying about one thing would lead to other things as well.
She had learned over the years how to cry in silence. She always cried without making any noises to not worry others and to avoid questions. Winter never liked to explain what was so wrong. To her keeping it all to herself was so much more easier. However when she reached her room, she broke down. Crying her sorrows away but the pain wasn't leaving her soon. She was missing her friends and family, however she would be lying if she said she wanted to leave. At least if she did she had to make sure the kids were in good hands but how would she do that? Who would want to take care of all of them?
Arms wrapped around her. Pushing her into someone's chest. No heartbeat could be heard. "Your always an emotional mess." Lazarus spoke up while holding to the human girl. Winter knew it was bad, she wasn't supposed to be ranting or feeling comfortable with Lazarus. The man that was supposed to haunt her dreams, the man she was supposed to fear. She knew being in his arms wasn't good at all. Yet she could feel herself sobbing into his shirt. Wondering why life had to be so hard.
"Its okay beloved, I got you." Lazarus spoke up holding the girl in his arms. Knowing he was indeed growing soft.

The Core And The Wardens of Eternity
What is the Core, they asked me... It's the light that pushes the darkness away, a bastion of justice, a safe keeper of life. It grooms love and tolerance, embraces science, fights ignorance, sentences it to die a slow and tragic death. The Core... it's something that can't be destroyed for destroying it is to terminate the time and space itself. When the stuck-in-a-dark-age world of Zanria goes offline, the Core sends one of its experienced agents to find out what is going on and to try to reestablish a mysteriously severed connection. However, all his training and experience might come way short as the world sinks in war and chaos with different races and clans fighting for the Star of Bardan, the ward rumored to possess enough supernatural power to create and destroy entire worlds. *** I just changed the name of the series, from 'the Nexus' to 'the Core'. Somehow it just sounds more right to me. This is the first story, and it has a medieval fantasy setting. But, eventually, this is going to turn into Isekai series with elements of LitRPG. So, my future books might include worlds with advanced technologies that might be more in SciFi, including Steampunk, genre. The first book might start slow, but after a few chapters, it should all be properly set up, and by then you should get the feel of how it will all flow. Also, I plan to introduce different story threats that should spread out and criss-cross in the future. Hopefully, I will not complicate it too much, and that it will all read good. I am planning to continue to add chapters to the main storyline here, but I'm also starting a new story threat in the Core series called The Recordings of Raan. There is also a side story The Memoires of Eisen that's exclusive on Patreon for those who would like to support me.

Saga of the Jewels VOLUME ONE COMPLETE
Prefer to listen to rather than read Saga of the Jewels? I'm also releasing it as a free audibook serial podcast on iTunes here! Epic YA JRPG-influenced GameLit progression ensemble-cast steampunk romance fantasy! When Ryn’s hometown is destroyed, will he be able to gather together the twelve Primeval Jewels in order to defeat the evil Emperor and save the world of Mid? A fan novelization of an amazing Final Fantasy game that doesn’t actually exist, that currently releases at least one chapter a month. Epic in that this will be very long. “It’s a marathon, not a sprint!” (-Kandaj) YA in that this should be enjoyable to~13-year-olds and upwards. Some gore, some swearing, some sex, but nothing more than PG-13. JRPG-influenced / GameLit in that it uses lots of JRPG tropes, particularly from Final Fantasy. I’ve read a lot of fan Final Fantasy novelisations and you can basically think of this as a fan novelisation of its own Final Fantasy game that doesn’t actually exist as a game... Progression in that the characters level up over time (though not with visible litrpg stat boxes). They grow in ability through training and experience, gain new skills, individually and as a party (think Chrono Trigger) and spend time discussing and stratgeising about how to defeat their opponents. Main protagonist from book three would definitely be able to defeat himself from book one! Ensemble-cast because we've got quite the roster of misfits here. The first volume is all from the main protagonist's POV, but it starts dancing between his and different POVs thereafter. Steampunk in that we’ve also got airships, steam trains, pistols and ambiguous ‘amber bars’ that function a bit like artificial lights… Romance in that there is lots of shipping here, a few love triangles, and you may be kept guessing as to who will actually end up together... Fantasy in that we’re in a vaguely pre-modern setting. We’ve got swords, magic, dragons, dungeons, monsters, all that good stuff. * "This story captures that Final Fantasy quality perfectly. Kiddy but also grim. The characters are great... Severely underrated and needs more favorites/follows. I look forward to seeing how this story will unfold." -Gilgamesh9999 "Starting at the end and jumping backwards is not a writing style seen every day. I'll admit, I was a bit skeptical at first, but you've executed a fairly crazy idea very skillfully so far. Overall, a strong start to what could be a very strong story." -RandomFF.netUser "You definitely have my interest piqued. It'll be interesting to see where the story goes... It definitely has an 'old school Final Fantasy' type feel to it, which I appreciate...Good job! I am glad you are going into more details about the story you laid out in the prologue...of course the big burning question is 'You know they lose in the the first chapter, so how will they end up winning?' That of course, is the story you're writing...so we'll see how it goes! #Following." -KyleQuicksilver (quotes are from reviews on other sites) * If you enjoy it, don’t forget to boost Saga of the Jewels on topwebfiction.com!
