《Dark Slate》Chapter 8: A New Affinity
Advertisement
it's been a year since i meet Nia we're both 6 years old now. It's raining heavy this morning, but that's not stopping us from training. Both me and Nia are doing 500 practice swings together.
She managed to use internal mana control about a month ago. she's progressing really fast due to being a demon, or because she's trying hard to catch up. it would take a normal person 2 years at most to use internal mana. While it took her a year. Due to me being reincarnated it took me about 6 months.
i've gotten better at keeping track with fast movements and distributing mana internally. Something i learned is that to increase your speed and power i need to distribute mana efficiently.
When i focus my mana to a body part i do it in a dirty way and a lot of it leaks out. So my power is limited. To overcome this limitation i need more practice and concentration. That way i'll be able to channel mana cleanly without any leaks, and if i achieve this who knows how fast and powerful i can become.
I finished the practice swings first so i'm up to spar with Leon.
I dashed forward. Me and leon traded a series of blows within a few seconds. Then i jumped in the air and threw some fire slashes at him. While he deflected them i landed on the ground and went straight for him while he was distracted.
When he noticed me he conjured up a stone wall. Leon's magic affinity is earth, and he uses that to make boulders to cut in half with his sword. The remaining fire slashes hit the wall while Leon defended against my attack.
We locked swords for a second then i jumped back, But he followed close behind me. He swung at me a chain of fast strikes that i was barely able to defend against them. Then he landed a hit on my stomach that sent me flying.
I used wind magic to reorient my self back to the ground safely, and i quickly healed my stomach. He's more on guard now than he was a year ago. If i want to land a successful hit on him i need to be faster.
I took a deep breath to concentrate on my internal mana control. After circulating it back and forth for a little bit i was ready, and charged straight for him.
He did the same and came at me. Once we were within range of each other he did the same as before and threw attack after attack with fast speed. But this time i defended most of them.
But this time i felt strange, i could hear his breathing, the whoosh in the air as he swung the sword, the impact of every attack, along with the heavy rain. I could see the attacks he threw at me much clearer. Most importantly i could sense the mana in him and behind the attacks. I could feel the flow of mana within myself.
Did i heightened my senses with mana? i wondered.
Feeling the flow of the mana inside me i concentrated to make the flow more efficient, and i had succeeded. I blocked each of Leon's attacks, and i started to throw attacks of my own. Before i realized it, i had pushed him back.
I threw fire slashes at him again, and then jumped. This time when he finished deflecting them i was already on him. I swung down at him with all my strength.

Just when i thought i had him he moved with even faster speed, and block my attack. Although when our swords collided they had both shattered.
This took us both by surprise. For a moment we both just stared back and forth from our shattered wooden swords to one another.
What broke the silence was a huge roar of lightning that had crashed close to us. The sound was so loud that we both fell to the ground.
"We should go inside." Leon said quickly, and walked ahead.
I followed after him. Once inside we were soaking wet so mother started preparing a bath for both of us. Nia was doing her practice swings under a roof so she didn't get wet. Leon and i were waiting by the door while Nia went to sit on the couch to rest.
"Hey Arata good job out there your getting stronger. I'm going to have to get more serious from now on." Leon said proudly.
"It's all thanks to you. Just watch i'll surpass you in no time." I said happily.
"Nope. I'll get even stronger by then, so that you can always suck up me." he said jokingly.
"That's not going to happen because once i surpass you i'm going to get far stronger and that way you can only dream about catching up." I said
"No because i'll be-" Another loud thunder struck and cut him off. "jeez that's loud."
When did we start playing the rival game? i thought.
I looked out the window and saw various lightning tendrils racing through the sky. That gave me an idea.
"The bath is ready." Mother said as she came in the room.
"hey you coming?" Leon asked me.
"you go on ahead i'll be there in a minute i have to check something out." i said.
"okay make it quick. I don't want you catching a cold." Leon said.
"even if i did catch one i can heal myself." i said with a smirk. "Can you?" i asked him mockingly.
"Yeah, Yeah whatever." he said as he walked away.
Once he was gone i looked back outside and stared at the thunder. All i know about lightning is that it's a an electrical discharge of negative energy, but that's it. It never really interested me to look into it because it was a natural occurrence.
Can i create lightning with mana? My knowledge about it is so little though. It might just be impossible.
What if i think smaller. Like getting zapped by static? I know that a current of static shock is created by rubbing things together.
I used wind magic to dry myself as much as i could.
"HANNA COME HERE QUICKLY." i called out to my older sister who came running to me.
"what is it?" she asked curiously.
"Give me your sock." I said in a serious tone.
"why the heck do you need my sock?" she asked.
"I need to test something out." i said impatiently.
"why don't you use yours?"
"i would. but it's wet." I don't know if it could work with a wet sock, so i'll just try with a normal one. "just hand it over it's going to be quick."
"fine. weirdo." she started taking her sock off. "So desperate to see me barefoot." she teased and handed it to me "here you go"

"Follow me." i said.
We went to the living room where there was a carpet on the floor. Nia and Mia were also there. i put the sock on my hand and started rubbing the carpet for about a minute while they all stared in confusion
"Hahah. Just what are you doing." Hanna said laughing.
"shhh. Don't move this is the most important part." i said.
I slowly moved my hand to Hanna's face and touched it with my finger. Once it made contact i felt a shock on my finger. The way it feels is kind of refreshing.
"ggaaahh. what was that." hanna said as she touched her cheeks.
"ppfftt. hahaha." i began to laugh. I forgot how funny it is to do this to someone.
"Hey stop laughing. What the heck did you do?" she started shaking me angrily.
"hey calm down it's nothing, really." i said calming down.
"hmmm. Whatever." she said.
I focused mana at the tip of my finger trying to recreate the feeling. i touched her cheek again but failed.
"ahh i failed."
"h-hey don't try that on me again." she said and jumped back.
So i started rubbing the sock on the carpet again.
"Hanna come here one more try." i called out to her.
"No. try it on Nia" she said looking at her.
"Nia will you come here for a second?" I asked innocently.
"hmm. o-okay." she said hesitantly. And came next to me.
I slowly put my finger on her hand, but before that i enhanced my senses to get a better feel for it. I made contact and felt the same shock. This time i felt it more deeply. The way the small shock moved from my finger to her hand.
I can do it this time.
Nia quickly moved her hand away by surprise.
"Hey why did you do that on her hand and to me on my face. huh?" Hanna asked in an annoyed tone.
I stayed silent trying to recreate the shock with mana.
"Hey answer me?" Hanna said as she got closer.
Since she was basically in front of me i was going to test it on her. i focused my mana again trying to recreate the same shock. Once i felt ready i put my finger on her cheek.
"gggaahh. Hey i told you not to do that." she smacked me.
"Aha i did it." i said excitedly. "I did it." i yelled through out the house as i ran back outside.
Once outside i put my two index fingers in front of each other. close but not touching. I then focused the static shock at a tip of both fingers which created a small electric current that ran through one finger to the other, and i held it as long as i could.
The electricity was really light blue or cyan. eventually i let it disperse. because i was able to maintain it for as long as i wanted.
I then tried with my hands. I put them together and them made the electric currents run through the surface of my hands. after that i slowly separated my hands. Currents of electricity appeared in the space between my hands, ran through the air, and then dispersed.
I focused more mana into strengthening these currents. that eventually they engulfed me and raged around me. i could hear the sparking sound of electricity as it flowed violently to every direction.
I focused lightning at the tip of my finger and shot it out. it looked like a lightning strike came flying out of my finger as it went through the air.
I continued shooting lightning bullets until i was out of mana. It seems that i'm compatible with lightning, it's probably due to my wind attribute. After that i went inside to take my bath. I'm staying quiet about the lightning magic i learned, and show it off later when the rain stops.
After about an hour the rain started to subside until it stopped completely. We were about resume our training. It was now probably late morning or early afternoon. Since the whole family was outside i decided to show them my new magic.
"Hey everyone." I called out to them to get their attention. Everyone looked at me. "Can i show you all something."
Everyone looked curiously at me.
"umm. . . sure. Go ahead." Leon said.
Once everyone was looking i focused my mana and turned it into lightning. Electricity began to surround me, and moved to my will. With my hands i shot it out to different directions.
They all stayed silent. They were just staring at me in surprise unable to say anything.
"So what do you think." I said as the lightning subsided.
"th-this is. . . h-how did you. . ." Leon said stuttering then took a deep breath. "Why am i even surprised." He paused. "So, how exactly did you do that?"
"It's difficult to explain. All i know is that by recreating a static shock with mana i was able to get a feel for the flow of negative charged energy. Once i did that i strengthened that flow, and as a result it created lightning." I said as i surrounded my hand with light blue lightning.
"Static . . . what?" Leon asked confused. "Negative. . . energy?"
Everyone looks confused. I guess they wouldn't get it.
"look here i'll show you." i walked up to them. "now don't move."
They seemed confused, but did what i said. I shocked Mother and Leon on their hands.
"gaahh." Mother yelped and moved her hand away quickly.
"ohh." Leon said with interest. "Now that is weird. It's like a tingling feeling."
"YES!!!" i said louder than i intended. " The tingle feeling. That's how i do it. I make the mana tingle."
They all still looked confused.
"Look i don't know much about it either, but that's the simplest explanation i got." I said.
"It's really rare but some people are born with the ability to use peculiar magic like that. But you . . . you just learned it? that's basically unprecedented." Leon said dumbfounded.
"Come on its not really that impressive. you can learn it too. if you're compatible with it." I said.
"Haha. Nope I doubt it. I'll just continue training with the sword." he said.
"Well, if you say so. shall we resume our training." I said as i surrounded myself in lightning.
Both leon and I were exited.

Mycology
Declan was but a teenager when he was invited to Gaia. It wasn't some popular VRMMO like the ones his friend keeps recommending, nor was it a 'game' in the traditional sense. Gaia was the stopgap to Indiri, a living breathing world, the final creation of a dead genius. Invited to this world by Eve, the overseer and an AI light-years greater than any that came before her, Declan was given a choice. To join or not to join? Well, why the hell not? Hello, this is a pretty basic VR story which I started writing out of boredom, don't expect anything too great here, it's a somewhat unique setting but with mostly slice of life comedy shenanigans with no real 'plot' since I can't reliably include stakes in a world where respawning is a thing. I'll try to upload at least once every other week but real life stuff may get in the way occasionally. **WARNING** Protagonist comes with an inbuilt wizard hat. Also, any mentions of chapter titles shall be met with falling rocks TPK. **ACTUAL WARNING** Story may or may not read like the fever dream of an eclectic sasquatch with internet connection. Do be warned, that this story has extremely slow pacing by design. Join the Discord!! https://discord.gg/p2gxqs4 Laugh at my empty Patreon!!

Fateless: The Silver Lining
It has been ten years of peace for the Union since the end of the great war with the eastern barbarian tribes, yet in the cold north of the Union's land, a new threat is looming. This time, an ambitious Lord is seeking to restore the yore pride of his kin, forcing the weakened Union into yet another unwanted war, as he ramps up the ranks of his army with thieves, murderers and mercenaries.* * *The temperature inside the forge was nearly twice as high as the one outside. A black-haired girl hammered a steel ingot into the shape of a blade. The heat of the steam was draining her stamina away, but her focus remained sharp as her sweat streamed down her face. Hit after hit, for hours, the sound of the hammering steel followed the rhythm of her breathing. Exhausted, she placed the blade into the water and wiped the sweat off her face using a drenched rag. Why are they screaming? Vatra dipped the rag back in the water, twisted it, and approached the window. Her mouth opened as her world shattered again into the living nightmare she had wilfully tried to forget. She bit her lips; it wasn’t a dream. The pulse of her heart rose. A cold sweat prickled her back. A mother was running, and a child was screaming. A torrent of smoke was emerging from the roof of her neighbour. Vatra’s eyes blinked. The mother lay on the ground, a spear through her back. A torch circled in the air and landed on the roof of her workshop. In the distance, a man wearing a banner well known to the world… Fateless is a philosophical medieval dark low fantasy centered on war, militaristic campaigns and geopolitical conflicts between multiple empires. This story follows the fate of Vatra, a former slave from the eastern Nar Empire who was raised in a culture far away from her own, forced into warfare against her will, and the fate of Lanaya, an ambitious half-angel exiled from her home whose existence is seen as heresy. As they wished for peace, both chose a path opposed to one another until their fate crossed. In this story where war dictates the law, love strikes them as a poisoned balm to which they grasp for with all their might, as it is in the darkest of times that the smallest flames may burn the brightest. * * * Tome 1 already completed and available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.ca/Fateless-Silver-Hugo-Emmanuel-Simard-Wallot/dp/B09LGSH1KK Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Hugo-Emmanuel-Simard-Wallot-100547579135891/ I will publish 1 chapter per week (sometimes 2 if the chapters are too short for my liking).
