《Heaven's Oddity》Chapter 77: Taint.

Once Ben Higgs turned into a statue, Maria expected some firework reaction.
She thought she would die there and then.
But as this elder became silent, she only felt a slight pull.
Rather than some fancy show-off, a slow process began.
Most considered her the strongest in the world. And due to her accomplishments, Maria could see the difference in power. And she could also feel the surrounding nature unrolling new rules.
As soon as she felt it, she became fascinated by the underlining craft. So, she tried to understand this pure law, so different from the magic she practiced. And even more distinct from the archaic cultivation system still present to this day and mentioned in historical texts to be the only system present around the foundation.
So, she didn't only stare at Ben. She also came closer and examined the statue, going as far as attacking it.
Still, she wasn't blind to the danger. Instead, she attacked because she could undoubtedly see how powerless she was against it.
And Maria was right. Her actions were to no avail.
When she finally got out of this curiosity trance, she noticed the energy surrounding her had plummeted.
She also noticed that her body and the others in her army were acting strange.
'What is it that he wants?'
And as if responding, a few seconds later, a small bubble with even more direct rules expanded from within Ben's heart.
Maria was the closest, so she was the first to become submerged by those laws. But while it wasn't lighting fast, the area of effect quickly expanded. In less than a minute, its border moved outside Maria's senses.
And by that time, looking around, she noticed her people grimacing.
Following, Maria stared at her hand and began noticing signs of aging.
Putting her right hand on her chest, she noticed her strength leaving her body as quickly as the bubble expanded.
"I see," she whispered as she turned around.
She walked away from Ben slowly.
Although she wanted to run, she couldn't anymore.
The people around her were already on the floor, and she could barely stay on her feet. Yet, she still moved forward, trying to return to the person she loved.
Her steps became heavier and heavier, and her vision became blurrier.
Despite her strong desire, soon after, she flopped to the floor, losing consciousness.
...
Waking up, Maria found herself inside this familiar room.
"Can you hear me?"
She turned around, and despite her vision being too blurry, she recognized the person due to the voice.

The person talking to her was a Doctor that was part of her faction. A young man talented with medicine but still young and weak. They had high hopes for him.
"How much time do I have?" Maria asked.
"We estimate two to three years."
"How much did it take over?"
"The taint expanded until it took over around one-third of the world."
"How long have I been sleeping?"
"Six months."
Maria stared at the ceiling in silence.
She was surprisingly calm, and that surprised her. But after taking note of her body, she discovered why: her taboo energy reserves evaporated.
And that didn't only weaken her body but also gave her a sense of peace, which was drastically different. Before, she felt the taboo slowly corroding her sanity away.
It was effective, and Maria could become more powerful than most. But her mind suffered because of it. She fell into deep paranoia and developed a thirst that was hard to control. And now, it was all gone.
'What's freedom?'
While Maria was in her thoughts, someone ran into the room frantically.
"Love! Love!" Dio yelled.
Sensing that her husband was alive and well, Maria smiled.
"No one here is dying yet, so don't have a heart attack. How have you been?"
"I've been worried about you! What happened back then?"
"You did a good job. You took control of the faction?"
"I did as you taught me. Although, most of our preparations didn't work. But also, almost no one wanted to take over."
"Is the black marble still there? How did the world react?"
"It's there, and we couldn't do anything against it. But I also didn't try much. Instead, I focused on you. Others from outside did come and try, but everyone failed, and after a while, they stopped coming."
"It seems that affects weaker people less? Is my guess right?"
"The weaker a person is, the slower it acts. Although seven people, including you, have somewhat broken that mold."
"The foundation seems fine?"
"It should last for a while. But it's also slowly deteriorating, and activating it put it under strain."
"That's fine then. How about we walk around a bit?" Maria said as she sat up.
"Are you feeling fine?" Dio asked.
At the side, the Doctor remained silent but showed a worried expression.
"I'm okay. It should be enough to look around for a bit."
Once the couple left, the Doctor went and prepared some more medicine. He had been working hard to develop his skill of using mana-poor plants since the effective flora had all dried out.

"It's so easy to lose track of time."
"Exactly!" Emily, Paul's sister, agreed.
The extreme traveling over this wasteland was always a challenge. Yet, this clan came here every generation.
Despite her kid's chitchat, the mother stayed focused while controlling the car-shaped artifact toward their destination.
Their clan came here often, but that didn't make it easy on them. In addition, Lucy Highpeak was worried about the instability shown by the wasteland in the last two years.
"Oh! The Luminious Ruins! Finally! Something recognizable. We're close."
As Emily yelled, she kept looking around, searching for the traces she had studied.
"Their story is so romantic! Spending the rest of their lives together, despite the end of the world surrounding them."
"They should have instead tried to leave."
"Maybe they couldn't. Wasn't the Empress rooted in this place?"
"I don't know. Those two don't sound smart, though."
"I don't care. Didn't the couple remain here and then die protecting this land anyway?"
Paul looked around and then sighed.
Once they passed those ruins, it didn't take long for them to arrive at their destination.
"We're here. Get ready for the ritual," the mother spoke again after staying silent for the whole journey.
However, as they went outside the artifact, they were surprised.
The fancy altar was empty. And there was no mistaking it.
Over many generations, they eventually organized this place out of respect for the Senior who slumbered here.
But now, the distinct white marble statue couldn't be seen.
"Mom? What now?" Emily asked.
"We come back and prepare our move to Hope City. We should be able to leave by your grandchild generation."

Waking up, Ben Higgs felt comfortable.
It was hard to remember every detail, but he knew he had finally won the battle against nature's pressure.
Although, this time, he didn't do so by breakthrough. Instead, he only waited until nature became weaker due to the decline of this world.
He still strengthened his foundation, though. Over the years, he slowly stabilized his body.
So much so that Ben finally stopped his refined soul from wanting to expand and leave his body.
Looking at his arm, Ben immediately noticed the withdrawal of the deep black tattoos all over his body.
Closing his eyes and feeling his instinct swing, Ben didn't feel the maddening whispering anymore.
And with those changes, he hoped he could finally go to his hometown again.
But before that, Ben became intrigued by the continuous aurora. Since he woke up, the show in the sky hadn't stopped.
In addition, he also noticed the change in the celestial bodies.
After he slumbered for a long time, the sky would always change, but never to such an extent. Today, it looked way denser than before and more chaotic. And he couldn't find a single recognizable configuration in the night sky.
The extra moon and sun also didn't help him understand it.
'What the fuck happened while I was asleep?'
He saw the signs of visits around him, but his curiosity was too big, so he ended up leaving before his people appeared again.
...
Ben Higgs walked around randomly, but the more he did, the more he felt intrigued.
...
Ben spent weeks reading about the legends of the past. He decided to read up on written history due to the chaotic changes around him.
Right now, he was inside the ancestral library of the Wildreach Resistance.
He ended up here after noticing that, despite the name change, they were descendants of the Volcano Sect.
"Do Sir need anything else?"
"No. So, thank you for letting me borrow your library."
"We haven't forgotten."
Once he stood up and left the books behind, Ben talked again.
"I extend the invitation again. If the end comes, you can always find a new home at my place. Do you still know the directions?"
"We do."
"I hope to see whatever is left of your lineage there later. Eloise would be proud."
Ben disappeared, but before leaving, he gave the foundation below the library a small recharge.
He then climbed to the highest place in Wildreach City and observed the world around it.
Before talking to them, Ben heard gossip about a neighbor wanting to absorb this lineage. Ben didn't believe they could achieve such a thing, but the conflict would still weaken Eloise's legacy.
'They grew weak enough that a small help of mine leaves a lasting effect.'
"What did Ginn do, and how can humans be so ingenious."
The sequences of surprises gave Ben such a shock that his consciousness woke a bit more than planned.
But how could he not rise to see this incredible craft? This strip of inhabited land stretched in two directions, sandwiched by distinct wastelands.
This place that its residents now called the Ring World.

Delve
Summary – Level 1: Delve is an isekai litrpg that follows an average guy who just happened to wake up in a forest one day. He wasn’t summoned to defeat the demon lord or to save the world or anything like that, at least as far as he can tell. The only creature there to greet him was a regular old squirrel. Soon enough, he meets other people, only to discover that he can’t speak the language, and that not everybody immediately trusts random pajama-wearing strangers they met in the middle of the wilderness. Things generally go downhill from there, at least until the blue boxes start appearing. Delve is a story about finding your way in a new, strange, and dangerous world. It’s about avoiding death, figuring out what the heck is going on, and trying to make some friends along the way. It’s not about getting home, so much as finding a new one. Did I mention that there will be math? Summary – Level 2: Okay, but what are you in for, really? Well, this story is supposed to be realistic, or at least, as realistic as a fantasy litrpg can be. The main character doesn’t instantly become an all-powerful god and murder-hobo his way across the universe. Delve is, at its heart, a progression fantasy, but that progression is meant to feel earned. The numbers in this story actually mean something. Everything is calculated, and if you find a rounding error, I expect you to tell me about it. That said, if math isn’t your cup of tea, there is plenty more that the story has to offer. Characters are meant to feel real, and progression isn’t only about personal power; it’s also about allies, connections, and above all, knowledge. Figuring out how the system works is a significant theme. ... What, you want more details? Okay, fine, but this is going to get a bit spoiler-y. Are you sure? Yes! Really sure? I mean, this summary is practically half as long as the first chap– Now! Okay, okay! The main character becomes a magic user, but he takes a route that is not very popular in adventurer culture, namely that of a support. There is a full magic system with various spells, skills, and abilities, but our MC decides that aura magic is the way to go, and that the only stat worth investing in is mana regeneration. Most people at the Adventurer’s Guild think that this makes him a bit of a dumbass, but he’s playing the long game. We’ll see how that works out for him, won’t we? Because of his build, the MC levels up fast, at least compared to normal people. There are no cheats, though, and he is limited in other ways. There are some clear and pretty obvious downsides to his build. That’s what makes it fun, no? Morals? Our MC has them. Again, we’ll see how that works out for him. Realism, remember? Would you be okay with killing someone and looting their body? I sure hope not. POV? The focus is on the main character, but there will be occasional varying perspectives from people around him, or involved in the events related to the main plot. It isn’t going to jump all over the place. Tech is standard medieval stasis. No smartphones, but the MC does have a technical background. Computers and their programming might be involved. There might even be a bit of uplifting down the road, who knows? Anyway, it isn’t the focus. He isn’t going to invent the gun in chapter 1 and change the face of warfare. Romance is not a major focus. Friendships are more the name of the game, though there will be some characters in romantic relationships. There is exploration, though not as much of the geographical nature as you might expect. It is more about exploration of the system and the culture. The pace is slow and detailed, sometimes verging on slice-of-life. The action is meant to be realistic and grounded in the numbers, and it is intended to have meaning beyond simply punching things until they stop moving. The general tone of the story is grey, and some parts can get quite dark. People die. Sometimes, people with names, but not anywhere near GoT level. There is plenty of light, too, though, to balance the darkness. The world is dangerous, but overcoming that danger is why we’re all here, isn’t it? Anyway, if you’ve made it this far through the summary, you clearly like words. I hope you enjoy the story! Cover by Miha Brumec Summary Updated: 2020-06-14

A Primeval Future
Follow the story of a modern caveman as he learns to survive, thrive, and shape his nascent civilization in a world yet untouched by man. Expect a focus on the nitty-gritty of primitive living, especially early on. I plan for this to eventually progressing to the settlement management and politics stage as people gravitate towards the one guy who looks like he knows what he's doing, but this will likely take some time. Despite the occasional system elements, skilling and levels will not be a part of this story. No shortcuts. There will be violence and there will be sexuality but there will be no sexual violence. I hate reading that crap and I hate writing it even more. This is my first serious foray into writing. I plan to put out at least 1 chapter a week, more when I can.
