Chapter 167 - Vol. 3 - Chapter 32
***
With a fast paced fight, Malakai didn't give a single chance to the syndicate thugs to wound him, using his deadly techniques to kill the bandits in a setting that wasn't advantageous for an assassin at all.
Yet, Malakai's playstyle was totally different from the conventional rogue and assassin, he wasn't afraid of fighting in a dueling set-up, or being outnumbered, as he could use his Shadows to distract his opponents and dispose of his enemies one by one where he excelled the most.
Looking at the death scene where each of the syndicate bandits began turning into gray light from the moment he killed the last syndicate thug, Rivior, and clearing out his notifications about the small rewards he gained from the thugs, while also picking up the money on the gambling table.
'Pretty good rewards for some low-level mobs. I made 120 gold from just killing those 6 guys, and I didn't even consume much of my resources.'
Patting his dirty clothes, he then walked in the direction of the ladder, starting ascending toward the upper levels, or at least getting away from the sewage system.
Moving at a fast speed, he then slowed down when he got to the top of the ladder where a wooden ceiling door stopped his ascent.
'Again? How troublesome.'
Saying that, he started breathing in and out, building up his Shadow Energy resources that he spent on casting another [Shadow Snake] with a simple role of exploring his surroundings before he would attempt anything dangerous, reaching the same stage as when he was at the sewer wall.
Taking his time, he also eavesdropped on his surroundings, finding it clear, and without wasting precious time he could by now blend with the shadows of the room, he jumped into action, already activating [Shadow Veil] and getting toward one of the wall of the basement floor, he started screening his surroundings again.
'My target is drug maker. I remember that old TV Series recommended online, with the theme of drug makers, Breaking Bad. Those guys used to make their drugs in the basement of their houses, so maybe this is the same here.'
Thinking about the old TV series he watched in the past, with an evil smile he started moving along the protective shadow of the wall, until he reached a part of the basement where there was a sign of people's activity.
"Those guys in the Rat Tunnel are really loud. Should we go beat them up so they learn their place?"
"Don't bother, we have to watch over that smartass Felic. We can't slack even though he is under contract for a lot of money to make drugs for the Syndicate."
"There's plenty of people in the laboratory to watch over Felic. Let's go teach those idiots a lesson since they are making too much noise deep in the tunnel."
" … Fine, but I will not lower myself to beat those idiots."
Malakai who froze in place when hearing this conversation between the two syndicate thugs, watched the door of another section of the basement being opened revealing 2 guys that he didn't care much appearance wise, but his black eyes settled down on their name tags.
[Fazail - Lv. 83] [12.500/12.500 HP] / [Erment - Lv. 82] [11.250/11.250 HP]
'Should I follow them and kill them inside the sewage? No, I will risk alerting the entire base. Let's directly move towards the target, the Drug Maker.'
Ignoring the two syndicate thugs who outleveled him, letting them pass, gathering a safe distance between himself and them, to the point he decided to act and open the door toward this unknown section of the basement.

"When we return we should also close some of the windows." mentioned Fazail, who felt a strong gust of wind, which made him assume it came from the opened windows they were having to oxygenate the basement from the toxic gasses released from the drug cooking.
Malakai didn't know that he left himself vulnerable in his rush, but then in the stage he reached the tension on his mind was plentyfull. Walking with his body blended in the shadows of the basement, he saw another group of guards positioned at different intervals, protecting another door, which from how it was guard, had Malakai assume it was the cooker's location.
'Now what? I am stuck. I can't jump and kill those guys since I would alert the base. Let's see if I can get inside this room in a different way that doesn't include the main room.'
From where he was positioned, he started navigating the basement in such a way that he evaded the guards, wanting to circle around this protected zone, and doing about 3 quick rounds, he saw a ventilation hose big enough for someone slim like himself.
'The ventilation? No way. I am not that desperate. Let's see if there's another way inside.'
Looking left and right, for a way inside, apart from the door which was guarded by the syndicate thugs, there was only the ventilation opening, which made Malakai think again, until a thought overruled the rest of his mind.
'Those bastards by now should be inside the sewage. I don't have time to complain about tight spaces. Besides, aren't tight places the best? Let's see if mine fits there.'
Giving off a small smile, he moved relatively close to some guards and jumping high, he left some smoke that got in the guard's attention.
"What's this? Did Felic burn something?"
"Hmm? What's wrong dude? There's no fire-smoke around. No worries that arrogant bastard would be the first to run if there was some fire."
The syndicate guard whose level was 155 watched above his head, where there was still some dark smoke coming from the ventilation opening, but with a shake of his head, he didn't follow with answers, having plenty of experience in his role, and seeing plenty of things from the drug maker, Felic.
On the other hand, Malakai finished sneaking inside the ventilation, and as if he was passing by a tight chimney, he began hearing new voices, which mentioned about some herbs and substances that he had no idea.
"Felic, when will we get our break? We've been working for 14 hours without any break."
"Soon guys, we have to keep the stabilizing in check."
When Malakai heard the guys mention the name he was looking for, a cold smile appeared on his face, and like a worm he started slipping closer and closer, until his head got out from the ventilation opening, being hit by the toxic gasses directed from some large cauldrons.
[Felic - Level 100] [5400/5400 HP]
'Ohhh, aren't you weaker than I thought? I believed I would encounter some strong boss. But you are weaker than the bastards I disposed of in the sewer.'
'I'll get this done, and make my way out from the same ventilation opening.'
Looking at his status, specifically at his [Shadow Energy] which was resting [75/100], he did a quick calculation in his mind regarding his Shadow Energy expenditure, and he frowned as he was left red-handed if he would go all-out in this assassination.
'Shadow Dragon Claw ' costs me 650 MP and 25 Shadow Energy, and along with 250 MP for Eviscerate, if all my combo goes smoothly, that guy Felic would be dead, and from his level, I will also level up, refreshing my resources.'

'I'll also kill those henchmen as they are only weaklings easy to be devoured.'
Sorting out his plan in a quick manner, he jumped from the ventilation opening right for Felic who raised his head just when Malakai was a meter away from him with both daggers taken out, releasing all of his killing intent which boosted his attack power.
'[Shadow Dragon Claw]'
"ICE SHIEL … "
A icy barrier started forming around Felic who acted on instincts to protect himself, but before the whole barrier enveloped him, Malakai threw his 'Skull Slasher' Dagger imbued in his shadow energy and killing intent directly toward Felic's heart who watched with big eyes, at the blonde man with ink-black eyes who landed on the ground, saying with an emotionless voice.
"Eviscerate."
Whereas with his cold voice, his scaled dagger slashed with a normal angle cutting his chest open, sealing the deal next with himself slashing the head of the drug maker.
[Congratulations, you have killed Magician Appreciate Felic.]
[You earned the following rewards: Felic's Head Trophy, 1000 gold, Bracelet of the Icy Veins, Great Magician's Alchemical Notes.]

Not caring about the notifications or the rewards he gained, Malakai shifted his attention on the weaker workers of the syndicate tasked with helping Felic.
"ASSASSIN!"
Every henchmen inside the room reacted as one would do when facing an dangerous assassin, and that being calling for the reinforcements. The stronger syndicate guards out leveling Malakai by almost 50 levels appeared storming inside the cooking room.
"What the fuck happened here??" shouted one of the guys who appeared first inside the room, someone with level 135.
"Assassins! Captain Polots, Felic has been killed."
Malakai turned his head toward the syndicate guards who took a tight formation around him, not giving him a chance to escape from this situation.
"You will regret messing with Dagger Syndicate, you stupid fool. Killing one of the syndicate's assets, you'll for sure pay for this."
"SPIDERLINK FORMATION!"
With the command, the group of 8 syndicate guards started advancing toward Malakai who was enveloped in his Shadow Veil from head to toe, blurring his features.
He watched each point of this formation, and he saw his chances dwindle the more he waited without taking action in retreating from the base, as he now became a kill target.
Not giving them a chance to attack him from all sides, Malakai charged toward the syndicate guards, spewing a big amount of dark smoke from his mouth which made it look as if he activated a smokescreen.
"Smokescreen! You know the procedures on how to deal with it. He is trying to escape in a sneaky way.
Seal all sides of the room!" ordered the Syndic Captain, while he moved toward the center of the room.
Malakai didn't intend to hide himself inside the room, and suicide himself, instead he charged straight for the door which was protected by an guard with level 125.
"[Lost Cross]"
Casting his skill, the guard in question was ready to block him, by while he blocked the first strike and was readying to push him back, Malakai's swift hands shifted their position, and in a vertical cut, he sent another swing cut which activated the knockback effect.
[You have dealt 456 damage to the target.]
[Lost Cross successfully triggered effect on the target.]
"Nooo!! Captain he is escaping. I got tricked by his technique and lost my position at the door."
"Fool! You can't do even that much against an discovered assassin. After him. I want him dead or I will not be able to explain myself to the boss."
.
They started chasing Malakai, and were shocked by how fast this assassin was, and by the time they were getting closer and closer to the center of the basement, Captain Polots catched to Malakai and slashed his sword which did a nasty cut on his back.
Nevertheless, Malakai who lost 65% of his HP from a single attack, gritted his teeth to deal with the pain he felt was excruciating, before slashing back at Polots with his Coldscale Dagger, which left a frozen wound.

.
.
"It seems you are quite unlucky. See you later, you damned bastard. I assure you, we will meet again."
Triggering the effect of his dagger which slower the high level syndicate guy, he reached the ladder of the sewage escape tunnel, which he climbed down like a madman, as if he did a suicidal leap, only to hold tight a the end.
There awaited the two syndicate guys who were drinking some of the leftovers left by the ones killed by Malakai.
"You? Who are you?"
"Boss sent me to verify something with the tunnel. No need to bother yourself. Remain on your positions."
Saying that, making the thugs to contemplate on the new information, he took off using all of his movement skills, which was mostly Shadowstep.
Escaping toward the sewage, he was one step ahead of Captain Polots who began to gather steps back in this race, noticing the two thugs with bottles of liquor in hand, and confused faces. Gritting his teeth he dashed toward the end of the sewage, only to see that the wall was closed, as intended, with the only problem that the lever was fully destroyed.
"Motherfucker!!!!! He escaped! Those stupid retards, have allowed the assassin to walk inside the base as if he owned the whole base!!!
Arghhhh, those cursed pricks will pay for all the losses the Syndicate will have now that Felic got killed."
Returning toward the sewer room, where both Fazail and Enment started being surrounded by the stronger syndic guys, who began shouting at them for being idiots for allowing the enemy to escape.
"The Enemy? That guy? He said he was verifying something for the Boss." commented Fazail his own story.
Polots who appeared at the sewage room and was hearing the comments of the Fazail guy, immediately jumped into action and punched his face, blasting him in the brick wall of the sewage room.
"HOW CAN YOU BE SO STUPID? STILL LYING YOU DAMMNED RAT!"
"Ask yourself, shouldn't there be 6 guys stationed to watch over the Rat Tunnel? Where are they?"
"Didn't they go to the upper levels after having a quarrel?"
*PUNCH*
Another punch straight on the syndic guy's nose, made it cave in, and Polots almost wanted to kill the guy on the spot, but then he restrained himself since their Syndicate required men.
Not bothering with listening to those guys' story, he climbed the ladder to reach the basement where a man with short brown hair, with a dagger tattoo on his side of the neck, and with many piercings on his face, was looking around the basement.
Immediately when the captain's eyes dropped on this man, he dropped on his knee and bowed down, saying in an apologetic tone.
"Boss, I am sincerely sorry. That drug cooker you've recruited, got killed by an assassin."
"Mhm, I've heard this from those workers who saw how Felic got killed. I don't know who would have so much money to hire an assassin of that caliber but we are in a state of war from now on."
"YES, BOSS!" replied Polots, bowing his head so low that he touched the ground.
"Besides another thing, Polots, you'll be punished for this event. You brought me trouble by allowing that book worm to die."
"My apologies, boss. I know I have lowered my guard, not expecting any assassin to use such an method of entering the base. From what I can understand that guy used the sewage system of the City to reach our base."
"No need to tell me, I understand what happened. Just go gather your men, and instruct them not to fuck up for the following months. Until I find who wants our heads, I don't want to hear about any mistakes."
"Boss, should I kill those two idiots who allowed the assassin to escape?"
"No need. But sent them to be punished for being useless."
Saying that, the brown haired man whose eyes were of a black color, turned around and walked off, yet Polots still didn't raise up on his feet, trembling around, feeling fear for his life after this huge mistake of his.
If Malakai would be here, he would have the chance of seeing the man who controlled Daggerford Syndicate, and maybe with this chance, he would be conflicted … or not. However, the one Polots bowed before, was a Silver-named man with a huge level for the current stage of the Satisfy.
[Caleb - Lv. 275] [???]

The Laptop Hero (Portal/Isekai LitRPG)
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] - April 2022 Silas got summoned to another world—by a group of kids attending magic school who seemed rather unhappy with the results of their ritual. After a brief glimpse of his summoners Silas woke in the town dump. Unable to speak the local language, a misunderstanding escalated and before long Silas wound up in a jail cell, the locals having confiscated all his worldly possessions aside from his laptop, which had formed some strange bond with him. Now he can summon his laptop at will, and he can view his Status, level up, and gain powerful skills and magic as if he were some character in a video game, which is great and everything, but all Silas really wants to do is sit in a dark room and play games on his laptop. Only, life isn't a game, and Silas needs to get his act together because everyone else is playing for keeps. Or does he? Maybe for Silas life is just one big game now, with everyone else stuck playing by his rules. Assorted Disclaimers, in no particular order: I am only posting this on RoyalRoad.com, so if you find my story elsewhere it was not posted by me. Please do let me know! While I do consider this a progression fantasy, and have tagged it as such, Silas's Status improvements will not necessarily proceed in a linear fashion. His RPG stats will have ups and downs, exploits and nerfs, periods of growth and stagnation. Such is the life of a gamer, to be held under the thumb of the all powerful devs, or in this case a certain goddess devoted to the idea of Balance. SIlas himself should learn and grow, improving and progressing in areas where he struggles, or rather, to show such is my goal. The story is told from multiple points of view. While other PoVs will come and go, Silas shall remain the only lead character. The world Silas finds himself on is not a nice place. Expect him to encounter gore and traumatizing content and bad people who do bad things for selfish (or possibly noble) reasons from time to time. Some characters will use profanity, however due to cultural differences the curse words used will differ from those used in our corner of reality, so I'm not including the profanity content warning. Silas himself isn't one for foul language. No explicit sexual content here. This novel is intended for mature readers, however, and will include mature topics, including, but not limited to, sex, violence, death, and taxes. No harem. Might be an eventual romantic interest, possibly even some competitive jealousy, yet as his story begins Silas is too overwhelmed with other concerns to consider long term plans. Musophobics might want to steer clear of this story. Same goes for turophobics. You have been warned. Keep in mind, however, if my other disclaimers didn't make this clear, I only have the faintest of outlines at the moment. This story will take me where it will. My goal with this story is to write it to the end, something of a long-term writing exercise, with the hope others might take an interest in my work and encourage me to keep at it. I've started a number of works before, even finished a few, but this is the first time I've shared any work in a public forum. My temporary cover was made by me, in GIMP using public domain images. If you can do better I'll happily accept your submission and give credit for your work here!
