《The Bartender at the End of the Universe》Ch 258: The Consequences for Cheating

"You what?" Abraham scoffed.
The scraggly man rolled up his sleeve. The left one seemed exceptionally long, and kept threating to fall down past his hand. Whenever it slid down his forearm, he reached over and pushed it back up to his bicep.
"It's common place where I'm from," a strange blob creature undulated back at him.
"Yeah, well it's cheating everywhere else," Abraham snapped as his leg started to bounce up and down.
The blob shook its return gelatinous form. "I don't cate what they do other places. This is how it's always been done."
Abraham scowled as he crossed his arms. "Then if you jump two of my pieces, can I refill the back of my board?"
"Hah! You'd like that wouldn't you, but of course not!" The blob snickered. "That'd be cheating."
Abraham's finger started to tap in time with his leg as he leaned back on the stump with his arms still crossed. He looked down at the checkers board, and then back up at the blob.
"But that's exactly what you did?" Abraham pointed out.
"You couldn't be more wrong," the blob jiggled. "Only the first player has the right of refill. That's why you must play your early pieces more cautiously."
"You're a bad liar, you know that?"
"Hah! You're far too cocky." The blob shrugged. "Why do you think I set up such an easy target for you to jump?"
"Because you're bad at checkers?" Abraham retorted dryly.
"Hardly. Why, I'm one of the greatest experts there has ever been for this noble game."
Abraham raised his hand up and rubbed the bridge of his nose. His sleeve started to slip down his arm again, and he stopped to pull up the loose fabric yet again.

"You know what. Fine, whatever. I'll just take my turn." He finally sighed in clear frustration.
Abraham picked up his red piece and jumped it over two of the blobs pieces. "King me." He said.
The blob let our a worbling laugh. "You actually fell for the first king trap as well? I can't believe you willingly stepped into such a critical blunder. Why, now all my pieces get to be updated to kings!"
Abraham still had his fingers on his checkers piece. He pressed down slightly as he grit his teeth. "Are you serious?"
"Of course!" The blob declared with glee. "I am always serious."
Abraham let out a sigh and casually picked up the red piece he had just gotten all the way across the board. He turned it over in his hand and then held it between his thumb and pointer finger. He lifted the piece up until it blocked his vision of the blob, and then he nodded.
"Fine then. We'll have it your way," he snarled ominously as he clenched his fist around the checkers piece.
"What...what happened here?"
Slime coated the ground. Off to the side of a makeshift table and chairs made from stumps was a black and red checkers board splattered with chunks of slime that were slowly sliding down it. Black and red checkers pieces were embedded in the ground all around the area, with a couple even stuck inside one of the stumps.
A three headed creature looked over the carnage.
"I thought..." The middle head grumbled. "I thought you couldn't kill a slime without magic."
The three heads were silent as they slowly stood up.
"I didn't see anything," the left head snorted.
"What? But we have to..." argued the middle head.
"No," interrupted the right head. "They're right. There's not a trace of magic here. We just didn't see a thing."
"Yep, simply couldn't find anyone here," agreed the left head.
"I suppose..." sighed the middle head. "It just feels..."
"Nothing we can do anyway." Snorted the left head.
"Yes." Agreed the right head. "Just better not to get involved at all."
