《The Bartender at the End of the Universe》Ch 256: The Countdown to the End Begins

Sentenza had started to sweat. His breathing sounded a little ragged as he continued to run around the open area and avoid various attacks from the wolf and robot.
Across the cavern, the flesh box reappeared, and a mess of people spilled out from inside. Bakade and Og'drimun were groaning. But as Death lifted his head from under Bakade's arm, the pale horse was suddenly upon him.
Boy, you're back! Death cheered.
The horse's face was vacant as it stared off into the distance.
I really missed you, Binky. Death cooed to the horse.
"Binky?" Og'drimun scoffed. "His name should clearly be The Decimator!"
"Ddddeeeccciiimmmaaatttooorrr?" Bakade questioned.
"Yeah, a truly noble name for a noble spirit." Og'drimun nodded.
Uh, that name doesn't really fit, does it? It's too outrageous, and he feels more like a Binky, or maybe a Khlōros? Death mused.
"Your names are garbage," Og'drimun scoffed. "Seriously, how did you come up with Cholera?"
Khlōros, Death clarified, not cholera.
"Whatever," Og'drimun said dismissively. "It's lame either way."
In a flash, all three of them disappeared. They reappeared across the room as the robot slammed its fist down onto the ground.
"Might want to have your little argument later," Narissa warned. "Not like they're going to just wait for you to finish."
Narissa had put the flesh room up in the air with the opening facing the ground. Bakade, and Death with Og'drimun inside fell out of the room and down to the ground.
"Oh, and I probably won't be saving you like that again. Not unless you beg for help from the great Baroness Narissa Grimaine." She held the back of her hand over her mouth and chuckled mockingly.
"I'd rather die than beg!" Og'drimun boasted proudly.

Death shook his head in disagreement. I know I spent some time doing the job, but I think I'd rather beg than die.
Just then, Death and Og'drimun seemed to notice that Bakade was missing. As the two of them looked around the room, they spotted her with Sentenza in the distance.
"Glad you made it back," Sentenza said flatly as he avoided looking at the girl.
"Iiiiii'mmmm fffiiinnneee," she nodded succintly. "Nnnnooowwww, wwwhhhooo ssshhhooouuulllddd wwweeee fffooocccuuussss ooooonnnn?"
Sentenza's eyes flickered around. "Death would be the easiest. But probably the wolf."
Bakade snorted. "Yyyyoouuu kkknnneeewww wwhhhaaatttt IIIIII mmmeeeeaaannnnttt."
"We've got a counter to the machine's strange ability so..." Sentenza's eyes grew wide and then he smiled wickedly. "That's it. We've won."
"Hhhhhuuuhhhh?"
"Narissa, get to me, right now!" Sentenza shouted.
The robot and the wolf turned to face the shouting cowboy. The icy fur on the wolf bristled and almost seemed to grow longer. His one eye stared down Sentenza as he slowly breathed out a light fog. The ice crystals floated around him in a thicker and thicker fog as his eye disappeared into the mist.
The robot lifted up its arm and its hand lifted away. Several barrels protruded from his forearm and aimed at Sentenza.
Mist started to sprout up at Sentenza's legs. He looked down with a slight scowl. "Seems I jumped the gun a bit." He grumbled as he scratched his throat. "Better get out of here."
The hair stood on the back of Bakade's neck, and she quickly leaped away from the growing fog.
"Narissa! Now!" Sentenza commanded.
The flesh box appeared next to Sentenza. "I'm not your slave you know," she scowled.
Sentenza quickly leaped into the room and shook off the small bits of fog that clung to his feet. "No, but if I die, we lose everything."

Narissa was turned away from Sentenza as a wicked smile crept onto her lips. "Oh? We would, huh? Guess I should do what I can to keep you alive."
Sentenza flashed a threatening look at the witch, but she was turned away from him.
Then, his eyes grew wide and he jumped deeper into the small room towards Narissa as he opened fire.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
But it wasn't enough. The wolf's paw had stepped through the mist and into the room. Sentenza's bullets passed right through the mist, as if it was nothing but water vapor. Even the bullet aimed for the wolf's eye that glowed in the mist simply passed through. As if there was nothing there at all.
It definitely hit where the eye was, but it never slammed into anything solid until it passed the mist and embedded into the rock behind it.
Another foot stepped into the room and the wolf started to growl. The mist spread inside with the wolf, and slowly started to fill the floor around them.
"Get us out of here, now!" Sentenza commanded.
"What? To where?"
"Anywhere, we just have to leave immediately!"
And just like that, the two of them disappeared with the room around them. The wolf disappeared, but some of the mist remained behind.
"If you'd just gotten there sooner," Sentenza complained before he started to grumble under his breath as he aggressively scratched his scarred neck.
"Oh, I'm sorry. I thought you wanted me to focus on ending this fight and making sure we have a way out of here, not to babysit you." She scoffed. "You know, it's a lot harder to track down people when that machine hurls them across an endless supply of worlds."
Sentenza's eyes stared at the mist. "This stuff is trouble." he grumbled. "But if you can be quick about it, you could bring us in close to that robot, or wolf, and I can shoot them down too close for them to raise any kind of defense or reaction."
The mist at their feet seemed to be growing thicker and slowly filling up the bottom of the room.
Sentenza scowled. "I'm guessing you have no way to purge this fog?"
"Have you tried being even more of a blowhard?" she said as she rolled her eyes.
Sentenza grumbled. "Let's just hurry then. Try and appear as close to the wolf as you can." He said before he walked up to the open door and held up both of his guns.
The vastness of space and time stretched out just outside of the room, inches from Sentenza. He didn't flinch as he slipped an unlit cigarillo into his mouth and bit down hard on it between his molars. His fingers were both resting on the two triggers, and he stood unnervingly still.
Narissa rolled her eyes and muttered under her breath, "This isn't really a precise mode of transportation...I guess I just better hope they haven't moved." She sighed. "He's just lucky I'm so good at everything. I even remember where everyone was before we left."

Tower of Babel: Speedrunner
Launch day. That was what they called it. The day when over four million people vanished in an instant from the island of Manhattan. The day earthquakes ravaged the east coast. The day a one hundred and one kilometer tall tower rose from the wreckage of the now empty city. The day every screen, newspaper, and smart phone displayed a single message from an unknown source: The Great Emperor has issued his challenge. From the ruins of the Old World rise the Tower. Its doors will soon open, and the great game will begin. A hundred floors and a hundred challenges await the worthy. And to the victor? A Wish of Unlimited Power. Cayden Caros yearned to play that game. His only problem? The Terms and Conditions. A strict set of rules that, among other things, prevented anyone under the age of sixteen from entering the tower. Forced to wait for over two years, Cayden did the only thing he could do to pass the time. He researched, he practiced and he prepared. It would take a lot to catch up to players with such an enormous head start. Lucky for him, he was a special type of gamer. A SpeedRunner So.... It has been a hot minute. I don't like talking about my personal life, but suffice to say I had some fairly bad times for the last couple of years and have only just recently pulled myself back to good health, physically and mentally. I have a very supportive partner, and am put together enough that I want to get back to doing what I love. Writing nerd fiction that I am too embarassed to try to explain when people inevitably ask what my books are about. Still beats when I used to write erotica. Story updates for book 3 should be on a daily schedule, baring unforseen circumstances. The majority of chapters from books one and two have been pulled down to keep with amazon's KU rules. Book one is found here. Book two is found here. If you like the story, please comment or favorite. Each comment goes a long way towards pushing visibility for the story, which means more people get to see it and I feel slightly more validated as a writer. I have a discord now where you can ask me things and I can be like 'no. no. I'm not answering that. no."
