《Courier》V1.81

Tony and Nucky hadn’t given Zoe instructions other than to take the credit chips to the bank, so she got in the teller line and waited her turn like everyone else. Several minutes later, she presented the deposit slip and her credentials to the beastkin teller. The woman’s name was Kim Morissette according to her public profile and she had fox features including a large bushy tail.
“Hi, I have a deposit to make on behalf of…”
“This isn’t a courier line,” Kim all but hissed at Zoe cutting her off without looking up at Zoe or even at the deposit slip on the counter in front of her. “And you should know that.”
“I’ve never delivered to a bank before and assumed I would have to use one of the tellers at the counter,” Zoe replied. “It’s not like there are signs saying couriers over here.”
“What are you a newbie?” the teller asked looking up at Zoe and then examining her credentials more closely. “Oh. You are a newbie.”
“Next time go to the first office,” Kim snapped and pointed Zoe to the proper glass walled office. She picked up the slip and glanced at it before looking back up. She waved the slip at Zoe. “Mr Goode handles couriers, especially when they deliver for people like…these.”
“What’s your problem?” Zoe asked in confusion. She had been polite the whole time. The teller gave Zoe a once over.
“I’m tired of having to deal with idiots like you that think showing off some skin is better than having a functioning brain every day,” Kim growled slapping the deposit slip onto the counter. “Especially those that smell like you.”
Zoe’s eyes widened in shock before narrowing. She didn’t stink nor was she dressed badly! Zoe immediately set Kunoichi on the woman’s ICE. A few seconds later and the daemon was past the teller’s simple ICE. Zoe left a time delayed Stinker and Plague as gifts.

“Then perhaps you shouldn’t have taken a job working with the public with such a bad attitude paired with that nose,” Zoe replied snatching the deposit slip up.
Zoe considered just for a second that maybe she had picked up some bad smells from traffic and considered removing the daemons. A few people behind her laughed and she squashed those feelings and doubts. She left the counter and walked to Mr Goode’s office determined not to feel an ounce of guilt.
Zoe took a seat outside the office to wait her turn. She sat on the end of the chair since she didn’t want to take off her backpack.
“Zane?” Zoe quietly asked answering an incoming call.
“Zoe, you have been followed,” the nurse said cutting to the chase. “I’m sending you two camera feeds.”
Zoe accepted the transmission and a small window popped into her vision. It showed a car with four men in it sitting outside the bank near her motorcycle. She recognized Kiril sitting in the front passenger seat and the driver.
“I recognize the two in the front, but not the two in the back,” Zoe informed Zane closing the video.
“Miss?” a male voice asked. Zoe looked up and saw a man exit Mr Goode’s office. “I’m George Goode. Are you a courier?”
“I am,” Zoe answered sending him her credentials. “I have a deposit to make on behalf of a client.”
“Very good. If you’ll take a seat, I’ll be glad to assist you. I just need to run something to the back really quickly,” Mr Goode said.
“Ok,” Zoe said as the man hustled off carrying a case. Zoe walked into his office and took off her backpack. She sat in the chair in front of his desk. “Zane, what can we do about my new stalkers”

“I could cash in some favors to handle them, or you could attempt to slice them,” Zane replied.
“Slicing might work,” Zoe mused. “One of these days you guys are going to have to come clean.”
“What do you mean?” the nurse asked feigning confusion.
“Come on! You guys are much more than a cyberdoc and nurses,” Zoe replied.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Zane retorted.
“Uh huh. I think I just got a good idea about how to handle the Russians,” Zoe said as inspiration struck.
“Going to tell me?” Zane asked.
“Nope! See you later,” Zoe answered and disconnected the call as Mr Goode returned. She very carefully started slicing into the nearest traffic cameras as she didn’t want to draw the notice of the bank’s Nian.
“Sorry about that,” he said taking his seat. “You said you have a deposit to make?”

“Boss, the courier is in the Big Apple Bank still. It appears she is making a deposit for Capone’s crew,” Kiril told Gennady. “What do you want to do?”
“Just keep an eye on her,” Gennady replied. “If we can find out where she lives, we can snatch her there instead of on the streets.”

Kim sneered at Zoe when she exited Mr Goode’s office and made a point to sniff the air loudly before, causing some giggling, before turning her attention back to one of her fellow tellers and resuming their conversation. The bank’s customer flow had slowed to a crawl while Zoe was making the deposit so most of the tellers were free and talking amongst themselves. Zoe shook her head and grinned. She now felt zero guilt about what was about to happen to the beastkin teller.
Zoe took a seat outside the office pretending to adjust her boots while she checked the traffic cameras outside the bank. The Russians were still there and waiting for her. She recorded a few minutes of video and sent it and the footage Zane had given her to Jimmy along with a message asking him to show it to Tony and Nucky as well as asking why Nucky’s business partners were following her.
Zoe stood and slowly started walking out of the bank. She couldn’t very well stay in there despite wanting to. She stopped as Kim suddenly threw up causing people to shout in shock.
“That smell! It reeks!” the teller howled before throwing up on one of her coworkers. Zoe smiled and exited the bank. It was mean and perhaps even cruel, but the teller had deserved some payback for accusing others of stinking, being dumb, and slutty. Ok, maybe she still felt a little bit of guilt.

This fiction is based on a short story I wrote inspired by a prompt on r/WritingPrompts. Contrary to my plans, I haven't sketched out the story in detail or written anything ahead of time. I've discovered I don't do well at that. I'm just writing this thing and we'll see where it takes us, OK? Nothing every came easy to Ryan Shakespeare, but as an elite British Army sniper he had found a niche that suited him, right up to the point at which he found himself summoned to a world far from his own to fulfil the job of a champion. Luckily, Ryan arrived with his experimental sniper rifle, so surely killing the dragon and getting his chance to go home would be a simple job, right? But Ryan should have known better, because nothing ever comes easy. Caught up in the politics of the Draconic League, Ryan will need to keep all his wits about him and use every resource at his disposal if he's going to persuade these people to let him do his job and go home.

R0Q-T357-Alpha (callsign: Rock) is a "Core Child," an irredeemably-crippled test tube baby modified and repurposed by an advanced U.S. military project to serve as the CPU for two-thirds of America's orbital defense systems. Though no one outside of the Pentagon has ever heard of him, he protected his homeland from three ICBMs, a Pacific theatre invasion fleet, and one rogue asteroid. Now, after twenty-seven years of distinguished service from "birth," he is being honorably discharged into civilian life. The only problem is that "civilian life" isn't exactly livable for a glorified brain in a jar. How does a couple pounds of grey matter surrounded by five tons of life support systems and enough co-processing enhancements to take over the planet enjoy an early retirement when he's surrounded by overzealous politicians, corporate spies, and foreign agents after military secrets? The real world isn't that forgiving.
