《Daydream of Gods》43 Flood: Doctor Viper

Oliver was traveling in a vehicle that looked like a car to the city guard office, which would be the equivalent of a police station in this world.
Migras was in the back with Oliver and two other city guards were in the front.
Oliver “ok, I cant help but feel like you are arresting me here, what is all the seriousness, we are not going on an execution are we”
The two guards at the front looked at each other, while the now serious Migras let out a breath and explained.
Migrass”no we are not but the information you have given us is just that serious, we cant help but feel like that and more importantly, I doubt that the higher ups will take it serious even if it is the truth until its too late”
Oliver“it is’
Migrass smiled bitterly.
Migras”yes I believe you, but I hope it isn’t”
Seeing his expression, almost visible question mark appeared above the head of Oliver.
Oliver” why do you look like you are in high school and someone just stole your money”
Migras looked at him and face palmed himself.
Migras{did I really lose Violet to this guy}
Migras ”because if what you said is right, this town will soon face a huge monster wave, one that we probably wont be able to handle by ourselves ”
Oliver looked at him questioningly ”what do you mean, don’t you hunt beasts every day, true they didn’t look that strong but still, you have experience, ten or so more shouldn’t make a difference”
Migras didn’t answer but quietly stared Oliver in the eyes.
Oliver quickly thought about what he had just said and apologized.
Migras nodded.
Oliver had forgotten what the average power level was for the hunters and that he himself was already much stronger than the average silver rank as well.
It might sound a bit egotistical, but using himself as the average was like using a photo model for the average standard of appearance.
Migras the city guard captain, the strongest of them was weaker than him.
So without thinking much about it, with his comment Oliver just offended every city guard here.
But their power level was not surprising.
Not many people had suicidal tendencies like Oliver, most hunter usually hunted in groups and let alone not being a saint, which by itself gave him top level power, they didn’t even have a lot of, if any special abilities at all, the average human in this world was just like the average human back on Earth.
Just because you live in a place with magic, skills, gods etc didn’t mean that you will be able to use them, just like not everyone was bodybuilder or scientist back on earth, not everyone was magician or a warrior here, those who were like Oliver were even fewer, not many would throw the safety of numbers to fight one v many just for the kicks of it and from these, those who managed to survive were even fewer.

Oliver wanting the uncomfortable atmosphere in the care to disappear, since even if the captain didn’t seem to take the comment as offence the two guards at the front did, changed the topic.
Oliver “anyway I am curious, who is that professor I saw
Migras didn’t hide information and truthfully told Oliver all he knew.
Migras ”well, as I already told you before he appears to be botanist, his name is Vinus Viper he.. ”
”wait a second” Oliver
Migras”what,.. did you figure out something”
Oliver shook his head.
Oliver”no not that, his name ”
Migras looked confused “what about it”.
Oliver”his name is actually, Vinus Viper”
Migras still confused nodded his head.
Oliver”Vinus VIPER, viper like a snake”
Migras thought about it before speaking again.
Migras”there is no snake species known as Viper”
Oliver looked dumfounded,{this dude, can he be so … third rate, who the hell would name his kid Viper, its like naming your kid Pito Poisonous, or Sara Shitpants, but well they apparently don’t have vipers here, I shouldn’t be so judgmental , but fuck even his name sounds like a third rate villain, he sounds like he will die a shitty dead,… well I do plan to kill him, but still doesn’t that just prove my point }
Oliver “yea sorry, my bad pleas continue”
Migrass nodded
Migrass ”Doctor Vinus Viper worked in..”
Oliver”phu hahahah”
Migras frowned “why are you laughing ”
Oliver tried to stay serious but couldn’t help it,{seriously, doctor VINUS VIPER, ahahahahahha, why the fuck does It sound so funny, what a shitty name, fuck am I three year old}
The two guards in the front were now glaring at Oliver, at first they had thought he was someone respectable, since he helped them deal with the beast the other day and then even shared important information about the safety of the town, but now since they met not only did he made fun of them in this serious situation, but is even laughing in front of the city guard like he doesn’t even take him seriously.
The drivers couldn’t have know that Oliver didn’t mean to ridicule them for their weakness and just had forgotten that he was the abnormal one and that he currently, despite looking at their captain and laughing wasn’t laughing at him.
After a few minutes Oliver stopped laughing, he hadn’t had a laugh in quite a while, maybe that was why it took so little to make him laugh, he couldn’t help but feel fortunate for signing the pact with Flood, even if the current emotions were not entirely his he really felt glad to experience them after a long time.
Oliver” sorry please continue”
Even Migras looked displeased now.
Migras”are sure, wont you prefer for me to let you laugh a bit more and just keep quite instead”
Oliver” I am sorry, please continue I wont laugh anymore, I promise ”

Migras gave him a doubtful look but continued none the less.
Migrass”as I already said on the phone Doctor Viper had worked in a small village ..”
Migras waited for a second to see if Oliver would laugh again, but the latter was just quietly paying attention to him.
Pleased Migras continued.
Migrass” which was overran by beasts, to be honest after we checked we thought the incident looks suspicious, in the area of the village the kingdom had placed a few people to keep the professor safe and there seemed to be no indication of the beast tide beforehand, but later investigation done by the kingdom didn’t find anything”
Oliver ”why did the professor choose to go to the small village, I am not scientist but wouldn’t it have been better to have a laboratory at a safe place, than in the outskirts of the kingdom”
Migras”we wondered about that too, but he had said that his experiments would have better chance of success there”
Oliver nodded.
He quickly ran a few scenarios in his head, he had been captain of a team back on earth, so even if he couldn’t predict emotions like a psychologist, thanks to his battle senses, intuitions and after much experience, his battlefield analytic skills have rarely been wrong.
If he had enough information he could always come with a strategy that his opponent was likely to follow, and the current situation wasn’t much different than a battlefield, the difference being that the soldiers were monsters and the head was a scientist.
But that actually made it easier to guess, beast means low intelligence and mainly acting based on instinct and scientist did not mean combat smart.
As the difference situations went through his head, Oliver expressions became darker and darker.
Oliver”I want to ask you something, has Doctor viper had had any previous combat experience on record or out of it and also what was his main research topic before he disappeared.”
Seeing how serious Oliver was Migras didn’t try to recall but instead pulled something that looked like tablet made of three bark, he swiped down and quickly checked what Oliver asked.
Migras”the last research topic of his… it seems to be some kind of medicine, but noting connected to vicious star if that is what you are asking, as for combat experience, I see none”
Hearing Oliver thought for a second and looked at Migras.
Oliver” are all the city guards a..”
“BAAAM”
A huge tree branch crushed the roof of the care making it break in two like a twig.
The ground below the car split from the impact, but two legs were firmly placed on it, the moment Oliver felt something was wrong he had immediately called his weapon and blocked the hit, Migras was on his ass next to Oliver and the two rookies seemed to be ok as well since the hit was aimed at the back.
Seeing the huge bull face holding the weapon stuck against his own Oliver couldn’t feel happy.
This attack proved his guess, that scientist was really an idiot in combat.
When Viper had found out that he was seen instead of hiding and waiting for it to pass, which was the better choice if he could hide, he had attacked.
When smart person with no combat experience was given too much power in secret, he would always want to try it out.
Scientist liked experiments and most of the time they thought that battle tactics and such things were not so difficult, but suddenly becoming a commanding genius after having a peaceful life and no commanding experience was utter bullshit.
It might happen in manga, tv shows and etc, but it would never happen in real life, for example can a third grader become an architect after watching a few videos, of course not, so why would a scientist who had never been on a battlefield suddenly become a good commander.
So if you think about it, when Doctor Viper who had to hide for a long time and had pent up aggression, practically zero combat experience and a lot of power which he could not use or he would draw attention, was suddenly discovered what would he do.
Does anything else needed to be said, of course he would go on a rampage, its not like he wouldn’t have thought about staying quit, its just he didn’t want to do in the first place, his brain rejected the idea, not even thinking about it as a viable option.
Similar situation would be, Imagine being horny for more than a year and then suddenly someone with a perfect face and a figure appeared before you and asked you if you want to go to his/her place to spend the night, do you really think you would be able to say no, of course there might be some exceptions but the current situations was more than enough prove the choice the doctor would have made.
It wasn’t easy to predict human actions, but it was far from impossible as well as long as you knew what they can and cant do.
Oliver pushed his halberd and moved the giant club, it crashed next to himself and made another crater, Migras had already gotten up and seemed to be waiting for the right moment to strike while giving orders.
This Minatour was not the only enemy, beastly sounds resounded in the whole town, a tide was coming.
If they couldn’t defend it, thousand of people would die, this town would be done for.

Born from a precarious relationship between a Drow and his prize, Serena Lash struggles to find her place, and herself, as she fights to persevere through the hardships life throws her way. A story born from a D&D game I am currently a part of. The narrative will follow the events of the campaign as closely as possible, with some events having been tweaked to better fit into a written story. A slow burn, the narrative does skip around a bit due to the nature of the campaign, considering that not everything in the game needs to be written about. This will begin to peter out the further the story progresses, but for the first parts, expect a bit of skipping!
