《Axis:Legacy》Chapter 16: Vigilance

“First things first you need to understand that you don’t need a specific purpose to be a human,” Oscar said as the two of them just sat nearby while both of them watched Thomas and Lissa spar the following day.
“Query: But why? I was told that each human as their purpose within the grand scheme of things within the world.” Nina said as both of them simultaneously took a bite out of their sandwiches.
“That’s true but you don’t learn that stuff from the moment you were born you know, I mean you may look like a young adult just like us but how old exactly are you?” Oscar said as he raised an eyebrow at her as Thomas was crashed towards the Arcane Barrier in front of them that protected the viewers from accidental shots from the Training Area.
“Irritated Comment: You don’t need to know that,” Nina said with a glare earning an amused scoff from Oscar as Lissa was also thrown unto the barrier but immediately recovered as Thomas slammed his Sword-Mace onto the barrier nearly cracking it.
“Come to think of it,” Oscar muttered tapping his foot on the ground. “Did your mother even leave behind any information or letters about it?”
“Sarcastic Comment: If she did then I wouldn’t be here with you now would I?” Nina commented as she narrowed her eyes on him and once more earning a chuckle from Oscar. “Confused Query: But why do you keep referring Niltria as my mother?”
“I mean she technically created you right?”
“Counter Argument: But I wasn’t birthed from her all records state that she very much died a virgin.”
“Yeah, but she created you didn’t she, so even if you aren’t biologically related she’s still your mother.”
“Counter Argument: She did not raise me, instead I woke up alone in an abandoned facility and I mistook Princess Charl as her for a moment.” Nina retorted as she finished her sandwich and brushed the crumbs out of her mouth and hands. In front of them, both Thomas and Lissa simultaneously disarmed one another and punched one another in the face equally knocking each other out.
“Dammit I was betting on Lissa today,” Oscar said under his breath upon seeing the two being carried off to the Nurse’s Office by Uther and Yvonne with a mildly amused look on their faces. “Uh but that being said I only said that she created you, not raised you. I mean take a look at those two, they’re no different from what you went through.”
She was about to ask further on how he knew about that but then she immediately remembered he has several bugs planted across the Campus so chances are he might have heard about the news about their paternity as well.
“Well we can always start with you making friends,” Oscar said changing the subject instead, as he stood up and let out a yawn. “I mean knowing you, making friends wasn’t included in your vocabulary right?”
“Irritated Comment: I have no expectations that you of all people don’t have any friends either with your personality and snide comments.” Nina retorted getting more and more irked at his comments.

“Hey, are you joining us for the Terra Warzone session this week?”
Both of them turned to a handful of students, looking at him expectantly. They were his usual group of players in the famous Tabletop Role-Playing Game known as Terra Warzone, they were wholly different from Kyle’s or Uther’s Group.
An Idea popped into his head as he looked Nina and back at the usual adventuring group.
“I was going to introduce your newest member in the Adventuring group,” Oscar smiled at them, this earned a confused look from them and at Nina as well. The best thing he can do for now is to help her make friends, by doing so it can help her understand how to coexist with them.
She’ll probably get mad at me but hey at least it’ll be a learning experience for her. Oscar thought as he walked down the steps and placed his arm around Nina who gave him a confused look.
“Meet Nina Erde, she’ll be joining us on our weekly Terra Warzone Sessions.” Oscar smiled at them while Nina’s eyes widened in surprise, she knew about the game. She had watched Lissa and Thomas struggle under Kyle’s handling, this might not end well for her.
“Disturbed Query: Why?” she can only say in a low voice.
“Don’t worry, this will help you in the long run,” Oscar told her with a reassuring smile, but in a low voice, she heard him mutter. “Maybe.”
[Axis:Legacy]
Bang!
Bang!
Gunshots echoed across the Firing Range as both Louis and Jun took turns in firing at incoming targets, though both of them operate differently with Louis’ Battle Rifle, which he nicknamed Simo's Determination, carefully aiming and shooting down each one in a slow but accurate succession while Jun fired her twin Pistols, which she loving named Clint and Sergio, wildly in high speeds, while on the surface it would appear as though her lack of spray control may warrant missed shots and even friendly fire but when looked closely each one of her bullets would make their mark. As such these two prided themselves as the twin Gunners of Class A for their precision and skill.
Both of them finally stopped firing all of the Targets were gone as the computer analyzed their accuracy, out of 250 high mobility and heavily armored targets they managed to shoot down 81% of them within 200 Seconds.
“Ugh could have been better,” Jun muttered as she placed her pistols on their respective holsters while Louis slung his rifle over his shoulder. “Yeah, I feel like we’re missing something there,” Louis commented as they stared at the results.
“I’m heading over to the forge to get my guns looked at, what about you?” Jun told him.
“Yeah, sure I was hoping I can some modifications for my rifle too," Louis said patting Simo on the side.
"Well, that too but--"
"You wanted to see Ren don't you?" Louis chuckled while Jun simply gave him a wide grin and a thumbs up. She openly admitted that she had developed a passing fancy on Class E's humble but skilled Blacksmith, as such she frequently visits their other blacksmith classmates in hopes of getting a glimpse of seeing him work.

On off days, the Forge is open for all students to work and upgrade their weapons provided that they are observed by their respective Class Representatives.
Upon entering the two were immediately greeted by Uther who was also working on his weapons at hand.
"Here to work on your weapons?" He asked as he tinkered on his Assault Shield.
"Yeah I could use some upgrades on mine," Louis said placing Simo's Determination on a vacant workbench while Jun followed after as she placed Clint and Sergio on a near. "What's wrong with the current state of the gun?” Uther asked turning his attention to Louis first, meanwhile, Jun instead decided to manually focus on her weapons alone, being the daughter of Axis’ own Military Police Commander she slowly beginning to learn her father’s deadly sharp intuition she managed to learn to tell about a person.
And there was something off about Uther that she still hasn’t figured out what, and she doesn’t trusts him in handling her sweet children, Clint and Sergio.
“Another upgrade?” A voice said behind her, she turned around and smiled at Ren who was looking over the plans of the two pistols. “Yeah I still haven’t figured out how to lower the recoil of the two,” She told turning her attention towards the two guns while Ren sat next to her.
“Mind if I give them a try?” He offered with a kind smile, she simply nodded and took Sergio and handed it to him.
“It’s still loaded by the way.” She added as he checked the gun and aimed it with both hands at a mildly surprised Oscar who was in the middle of helping Nina in designing her power gauntlets.
“Ren, buddy I know we’ve known each other since we were kids but please I’m sorry for eating your sandwich earlier,” Oscar said nervously as he took a step back. “Excited Suggestion: Shoot him,” Nina said surprisingly excited at the idea of him getting shot.
Bang!
Bang!
Bang!
Bang!
Bang!
Thud!
“I see the problem.” Ren said looking at Sergio, Oscar meanwhile got up after getting shot in the chest as he ripped open his shirt revealing that the five bullets had nearly penetrated the standard bulletproof vest (common equipment for the students working within the Forge for the sake of maintaining safety) causing him to yell ‘You Bastard! You almost killed me!’ from the distance while Nina clicked her tongue in disappointment.
“What is it?” Jun asked curiously as Ren placed on the workbench and began to disassemble it.
“You’ll need to change grip to maintain a much more balanced grip for the sake of keeping the high rate of fire and the power of the gun balanced,” Ren explained as he got to work on making on a pair of new grips for both Sergio and Clint. “With this, you can continue to fire as you wish but at the same time maintain the same stopping power they have.”
“That’s awesome, as expected from the best Blacksmith of our year.” She said giving him a playful slap on the back earning a smile from Ren as well.
“Please you overestimate my skills too much,” Ren said with an embarrassed smile. “Hey don’t give me that crap,” She said placing her hands on her waist as he was close to finishing the grips and immediately placing them on both Clint and Sergio.
“I’m just saying, there’s always a bigger fish after all.” Ren shrugged earning an eye roll from Jun, but she didn’t argue. Nearby Oscar returned with a new vest while Nina watching the two continue to talk as Ren continued to work on the pistols.
“Observation: It would seem that it is common for fleshlings to develop an increase in pheromones around people of their interest,” Nina commented as she put on her Power Gauntlets.
“Well yeah, biologically it means you want to tap and or ride that person,” Oscar said finishing up the final details on her Assault Shield which took on a kite shield-like shape, but it’s most notable function was the long-range Mana launcher which featured a barrel on the end of the shield as well as the ability to project Ki barriers with it.
Originally she was offered to use Power Gauntlets, they were much similar to her original gauntlets but it was a lot lighter than before but kept the same large and blocky design. Its newest designs were the fact that the knuckles themselves release a static shock and a handgun attacked at the top part for ranged combat but she turned it down for a more.
“So what do you want to name it?” Oscar asked looking over the designs once more. “Confused Query: Name for it?” She asked looking over the shield.
“Yeah, it helps in giving you a sort of bond with it.” Oscar pointed out. “Counter argument: Wouldn’t it be much better if you were the one to name it?” Nina asked as she ran a hand through her shield.
“I’m not the one who’s using it,” Oscar shrugged. “Side Comment: You are very stubborn and lazy.” Nina narrowed her eyes on him earning an amused laugh from him.
“Well if you’re that insistent that I should be the one to name it let’s see…” Oscar said picking up the shield once more and looking upon the designs. The first thing that he recalled was a story of a faction that once fought alongside the Andras and Arios years before the Axis conflict, but by the time the Conflict began all of them have been wiped out.
“Vigilance,” Oscar said immediately naming the shield and engraved the name on the surface. “Query: From the Pre Conflict Mercenary Group that fought alongside Andras and Arios before?” Nina asked as she took the shield and put it on her right arm.
“Yup from that, so what do you think?” Oscar nodded with a small smile. Nina remained silent as she activated the Ki barrier for a brief moment and then fired the Mana Launcher at a spare target obliterating it on the spot.
“Statement: It’s amazing.” Nina smiled at him.

Dungeon Darwinism: Deepest Dungeon
Dungeons are a lot like sea turtles. They’re born in clutches of dozens, if not hundreds. A hundred may be born at one time, buried in still burning cities, or in forests where the canopy hides the sky, or in ocean trenches at the bottom of the sea. But only one in a clutch ever makes it to the surface. Everyone knows about dungeons— monstrous factories that emerge out of the earth, full of riches and Arcana and power— and monsters. But most of humanity only know about the dungeons that make it. Mark doesn’t know anything about dungeons. He isn’t from this world, and only as a victim of circumstance has he become an unwilling half of a dungeoncore. The other half is a Dark Lord. (Rewrite)
