《The Daily Life of Akashi Takabi (Draft I)》Chapter XII: How Magic Works

I’m sitting at the dining table with Rosalie, eating a muffin.

The muffins here are really good…

“Yesterday you said you’d teach me magic today, yes?” I ask

“Ah, yea. Come with me to my room after we eat. I’ll start teaching you. First of all though, may I ask, what elements can you use? I can use the Fire, Wind, and Electric elements.” Rosalie replies

“I’m supposed to be capable of Wielding the elements of Light, Space, and Earth,” I tell her

“Space is a rather rare element… it’s an extremely sought after one as well. Having three elements like myself is something quite good as well. Though not having elements in common may be a bit of a problem.” Rosalie tells me “I won’t be capable of teaching you your elemental specific words.”

Rosalie finishes eating her food and I finish up quickly after her. We get up and leave together.

She brings me to the guest rooms and into her room.

She hasn’t been here long at all, and it already has an entirely different feel to it compared to before she was here.

It’s very…cluttered now.

A small table’s in the middle of the room with a glowing blue orb held on top of it, which lights the entire room in a bright blue glow. On a stand in the corner of the room is an armor stand with a set of combat gear dressing it.

Two tables have been placed across two of the walls with books and pages with writing on them covering them. A fancy and expensive looking bag is at the edge of the table.

Trinkets of all sorts are haphazardly strewn about the floor, though a pathway of sorts does exist through it all. A pair of clothes is also spread across the floor.

…How did it become such a mess so quickly…?

Rosalie shuts the room’s door.

“Sorry it’s such a mess…” She apologizes.

I sigh. “Do you not let the maids clean here or something?” I ask

“I’m in here too often for them to do any cleaning.” she replies

Ah… that makes a bit more sense then. But still. How? How is such a huge mess made this quickly…?

Rosalie nimbly makes her way to her two tables next to the walls, where the floor’s actually clear. She searches for some papers and after a while picks a few up.

I stand there, unwilling to head far into the mess that is this room.

“Alright, so do you know the basics of magic?” She asks

“Not at all.” I tell her

She sighs. “Right, well I guess that’s reasonable since you’re so young.”

Then she begins to explain. She sounds much more confident than she normally seems to.

“Magic is an energy that exists inside all living beings, from plants, to animals, to humans. While it’s not quite understood how exactly plants or animals use magic, humans use magic in one of two ways. Chantless, or Chanting. Chantless, as you may expect, is silent, and requires no movements at. However, it’s less stable and is more difficult to use. Chanting magic requires the user to be given enough time to speak the words of the magic they wish to use, but it’s more stable and easier.

I know how to cast magic both ways, and will be teaching you both. Both of them work by uttering or thinking words of a now lost, ancient tongue. Legends say that magical creatures such as dragons and phoenixes were what the language originated from.

However, not all magical words work for everyone. Someone who does not have the Water element will find it impossible to apply magic to words in a way that relates to the water element. An example of this would be for me to chant the words ‘iidal ertel’, which means ‘Aqua Blade’, it would not do anything.”

Rosalie pauses and holds her pointer finger up.

“However, if I were to do something such as chant [lehtriil goiluu uuliin]...” above her finger, a small flame floats. “Ah, that meant ‘Floating Finger Flame’, by the way.”

Wow…

It’s just a small bit of magic but it looks so cool…

“Changing the order of the words can also often change the spell. Take this for example. [lehtriil uuliin goiluu].” Rosalie explains, opening up her palm and facing it upwards to reveal a finger made out of fire floating above it.

The finger wriggles a bit.

Can she control it…?

“Now for the chantless way. Simply thinking the words in your mind will do.” then the small flame that was floating above her finger appears once more.

“I won’t be teaching you chantless magic for a while though. It’s something very difficult to keep stable.” Rosalie

Ah… that’s a pity but I guess that’s reasonable.

Chanting is fine.

“However, there’s also another limitation applied to the whole word-magic thing. Something that’s too powerful for your magic stat won’t be able to be cast. May I ask what your magic stat is?” Rosalie asks “I’ll tell you mine after.”

It’s a highly guarded secret… but I suppose if she’s telling me hers as well it’ll be fine, right…?

“My magic stat is 12,” I tell her

Rosalie nods. “That’s very good. Mine is at 15. While it’ll be incredibly difficult for you to surpass me, you’ll be an excellent first apprentice.”

That’s… 15 is incredibly high. I’m quite shocked.

“In any case though, until you get to the point that you’re forming most of your own spells and translating new words, which is something that a great number of mages never even get to anyway, you won’t hit your limit of strength.” Rosalie tells me “Your potential is rather incredible. I’m just a rather large outlier. You’re actually someone who’d be considered more valuable as Space is an extremely rare and rather powerful element. Fire and Wind are very common and Lighting isn’t that rare.”

“Right, anyway, let’s actually get started now. Since space is the thing that’s the most valuable, I’ll start you off with some basics. Spacial is ‘iknuu’. Can you repeat that?” Rosalie asks

I repeat back to her my best attempt at saying ‘iknuu’. It’s not that difficult of a word and I manage to pronounce it somewhat understandably in a single try, I think.

After that, Rosalie teaches me how to say ‘dliin’, which means cut.

“That’s all for now. For the next week or so, practice getting your pronunciation correct and controlling your spell.” Rosalie tells me

I nod my head.

“The first step is the most difficult, so that’s why it’ll take a long time.” Rosalie explains

I nod my head again.

“Right, so now that lesson is done with, you should go practice the spell.” Rosalie tells me

“Ah, yea, I’ll go do that,” I reply before heading out

I’m excited to do magic!

I rush towards the courtyard as fast as my little legs can stability take me.

Once I get there I find Saith doing some sort of warm up.

Oh… right… I need to work out too…

After forcing myself to go through with my daily training, I have a maid carry me back to my room.

…I’ll just practice magic later… I’m too tired to stand up any longer…
