《W.A.R.F.R.A.M.E.》Chapter Twenty Three: Alex

Vincent spent most of his time after school going to Card Cabin. He would buy more packs and try to figure out what would best suit his frame. He tried every possible combination but he still could not find something suitable. Frustrated from the thinking, he decided to take his mind off it. He just went with his initial assembly and dived into the Nexus. Upon entering the tower, Vincent proceeds to the mission's counter alone. “Let’s see, what would be good for training?”
He was still deciding after going through the list of missions he still could not decide. Then he remembered Mister Myers' words, “In this competition, most of your battles will most likely take place in space. You need to familiarize yourself with space battles.” Having made up his mind, Vincent goes through the list again. He specified his search by adding space as a category. “Justin said that with my skill level, I’m only qualified to take F and E class missions. The rest are too much for me. Maybe I should try a D class mission. Hopefully, I can prove Justin wrong.”
Vincent accepted the mission and change his environment to that of the hangar. From there he got into his frame and got onto the catapult. “Vincent Porter, Jakqoo, launch!” The path at the end of the tunnel that was closed before had opened. The catapult pushed him forwards and he was sent flying. Upon being launched Vincent could not help but tumble around. His frame started to spin vertically. While upside down, Vincent noticed the structure where he launched. He was surprised to find out that he launched from a spaceship.
It was a large white ship with red-tipped wings on either side and had dual launch pads that made it look like a Pegasus with its two front legs raised like arms. The ship kept moving and when it was close enough Vincent grabbed hold of the neck of the ship, just under the bridge. He pulled himself down and sat on the hull while leaning back on the neck of the ship. The ship carried him through what appeared to be a debris field littered with the destroyed parts of frames and ships. Once the ship was completely inside the debris field, Vincent received a notification, ‘Mission Start: Protect the Pegasus as it makes its way across the debris field and into Alliance controlled space.’

Having received the notification Vincent got ready, “Bring it on. I can handle anything.” Just as he said that he received an alert that multiple targets had been detected. Vincent looked at his radar and found that there were at least twelve enemy units in his immediate vicinity. The targets were using the debris to hide their presence. Once they revealed themselves, they immediately began firing on Vincent and the Pegasus. Vincent fired his machinegun and missiles. He was able to destroy quite a few of them.
When two of them got close, he had to put away his machine gun and use his axe to block the swords from the enemy frames. He kicked one away after parrying the initial attack and fired his missiles. The unit was destroyed. When the second one attacked, Vincent jumped to the side to avoid the attack. But as soon as he did that, he regretted it. He was now spinning, tumbling, and fumbling uncontrollably. Having lost his footing, Vincent was now drifting through the battlefield with his guard down. The enemy units took this opportunity and fired upon the defenceless Jakqoo. Vincent received a red alert after taking some damage. If he took any more damage, his unit would be destroyed and he would fail the mission.
However, just as Vincent was about to accept his fate and wait for his frame to be destroyed and receive the mission failure notification, it did not come. His machine was not destroyed and the notification did not appear. Instead, the units that had aimed their guns at him had been destroyed. When Vincent looked around, he could see the enemy units were all firing on a single target. It was a white coloured frame and it was moving fast.
It easily avoided the shots being fired at it. After it dodged one shot after the other, it counterattacked and destroyed the enemy units that had surrounded the Pegasus and made quick work of them. As it moved closer, Vincent could see the frame that had saved his butt. Its upper torso was that of an Angel type, while its lower half was legless. To be more accurate, it looked like a large skirt with thrusters underneath.

The person piloting the unit contacted Vincent, “Hey, you okay? First time doing a space mission?” The pilot asked. From what Vincent saw, and the voice that he had heard, he could tell that the pilot was female. “Yeah, I’m fine. Space battles were just harder than I expected. Especially when I tried moving around in the vast emptiness." The girl chuckled, “How about I help you back into the hangar. If the frame stays in there for a while, it can get fixed and be ready for the next wave.” Vincent found her words a tad puzzling. He thought to himself, "What did she mean next wave?"
The girl helped carry Vincent’s frame into the hangar the same way he exited. After placing the Jakqoo down, a timer appeared in front of it, indicating the time it will take to completely repair the damaged frame. The girl parked her frame in the hangar and exited.
She called for Vincent to come down. Seeing that he could do nothing but wait, Vincent exits his Jakqoo and goes to the girl who was sitting on a bunch of containers. He did not know how she got to the top of the container, seeing that it was at least 10 feet tall. The girl looked down and called to Vincent, “Hey, get up here.” Vincent looked around for a ladder but couldn’t find one he then called out to her, “There’s no ladder around here. How am I supposed to get up there?”
The girl then answered, “We’re in space. There’s practically no gravity here. Just jump and I’ll catch you.” Not knowing what to do, Vincent just followed the girl’s instructions and jumped. Vincent reached the peak height of his jump but just when he was supposed to drop back down to the ground, Vincent found that he kept floating upwards. Unable to control his body, he panics. Just when he floated above the container, he felt a hand grab onto his hand and pulled him down.
The girl pulled him down to the container and she took a seat. She then tapped on the top of the container, indicating for him to seat down. Once he sat down, he finally got a clear view of the girl that had saved him. She had blonde hair that was tied into a bun and tanned skin. She wore a brown cap over her blonde hair and a pair of sunglasses over her eyes. She was wearing black pants and a white shirt under a brown aviator’s jacket.
She then raised her hand at Vincent, seeing the hand, Vincent took it and shook her hand. She introduced herself, “Hi, I’m Alex. You must be new.” Vincent nodded and introduced himself, “I’m Vincent. How did you figure that out?” Alex grinned, “Because it was obvious. You really need to work on your space battle skills. The way you were fumbling out there. I couldn’t stop laughing. I couldn’t concentrate on taking out those small fries without busting a gut." Vincent’s face turned a shade of red, in embarrassment. “Thank you for saving me and all, but it’s not funny,” Alex recalled the sight of Vincent fumbling and she started to laugh again. Vincent’s face grew even redder, “It’s not funny.” To which Alex replied, “Yeah it is.”

Shaman
*** Let's get this clear now: the MC is a trans woman. This is not a gender-bender. It's set in a fantasy world but the exploration of identity and gender is reality-based. Not a joke, not a kinky turn-on. If this is a problem for you, please just act like an adult and look elsewhere for something to read. *** Rating breakdown, since that should be public info: 2 x 5*, 1 x 4.5*, 1 x 3*, no reasons offered. A human shaman and healer returns from several years with the mysterious shyani, accompanied by her shapeshifting puma best friend. A valued friend, from her previous identity as a male student physician, has acquired an old shyani book, and extremists will not tolerate its presence in human hands. But back in human lands, the question arises: which world does she belong in? Generations ago, human explorers found a continent inhabited by an utterly alien culture of shapeshifting weyres and the shyani, humanoids who prefer dusk and dawn. A truce of sorts was eventually reached: humans claimed the rich lowlands, and the shyani and weyres retain the highlands. Along the border, practicality often rules, but on either side, old grudges linger in some hearts. As a student physician, Corin tried to take his own life, unable to bear the countless tiny wounds inflicted over twenty-one years of lying to himself in order to be, or pretend to be, socially acceptable. At the last improbable instant, intervention came, in the form of a spirit fox, who led him away from the existence he’d known in the lowlands and into the highlands. There, a puma weyre rescued him, and a shyani shaman helped him find his true self and offered a rebirth, a life with no more lies, and an important role to fill. Now a shaman and healer in her own right, Vixen who was once Corin learns that the one human who mattered to her in her previous life, then a fellow University student, has come into possession of an old shyani book, and the more fanatical shyani and weyres will stop at nothing to reclaim it and punish Jared. Even though it means going back into the lowlands and facing Jared as a woman, she can’t bear to just look the other way. This should be a short visit, just long enough to see the book into the proper hands and make sure Jared will not be killed for having it, and then she can return to the shyani community that has accepted her as their shaman. And, of course, her feline best friend Dayr insists on coming with her. But Jared is now a Lord, with considerable wealth and power, and his response to her presence isn’t one she expected. After years living with the shyani, she sees everything around her from a new perspective, and that makes it difficult to keep to the plan of making as few waves as possible. As an honoured guest in a highborn house, with only Jared aware that she has ever been anyone else, Vixen finds herself questioning where she belongs: with Dayr and the shyani, who accept her gender without question but have to make allowances for her differences, or with humans, in the culture she grew up in even though her past would mean a major scandal? *** Trigger warning: there are scenes of Vixen's previous life, which include some difficult moments and culminate in an (obviously unsuccessful) attempt at suicide before she finds her true self and a better life. Please be careful! This is the ONLY reason for the "Traumatising Content" tag.*** Complete stand-alone novel, 96K words. Also available on Scribble Hub and as a free ebook.
