《Otherworldly Life as a Beastman》Arc 2 Prologue “Heritage”

The sky was dark and cloudy, and raindrops fell from the sky and onto the land of the kingdom of Silovilio. Citizens rushed to their homes and closed the doors and windows. Others are able to quickly find someplace where they can stay dry until the rain passes by.

No one was able to predict that the rain was going to start; but who can blame them? It was all mother nature's work. She knows what she does best.

Some say that it's a sign of blessing from the heavens. Some say it's a sign of misfortune. Others say that it is just a hoax and it wouldn't be taken seriously.

So it shouldn't be a problem, right?

—Or so they thought.

“Briomaar…”

“Yes, my dear?”

“Where are my daughters?”

“Don't worry, my love. They should be here at any moment.”

He says that as he firmly holds his wife's weak hand. Lying on the large bed was an elderly and sickly fox woman who was near death's door. The man who was sitting on a chair next to her, with a sad look on his face, was her fox-eared husband who was past his prime.

The love is strong between the two of them, despite the scent of death that is looming in the room. The link between two married couples throughout their lives was unfathomable and inseparable.

“Mother!”

Burst out the door were two youthful girls. One was a tall slender woman with fox ears and a tail. The other behind her was her younger sister. She has similar features as her sister, the only difference is that she is younger than her older sibling by six years.

They both ran to their mother with the younger sister kneeling on the floor next to her.

“Mother, you can’t be leaving us now!”

“I am sorry, my children, but I’m afraid I couldn’t be around for much longer.”

Both of the children cared deeply for their mother, but in the state she is now, this might be the last time that they’ll get to see her.

She looked at one of her daughters, the older one.

“Morrigan.”

“Yes, mother?”

“You have the spirit of your mothers that came before. And I’m so proud of you for fighting for this nation. I hope that I will see you lead our nation from the heavens.”

“Thank you, mother. And I can—no, I will continue our legacy, for the people of Silovilio…and for your sake, mother.”

Although she was trying to hold back her tears in front of her dying mother, she continues to stand vigilant as she honors her mother’s dying wish.

“You can’t go, mother! I don’t want you to go! I want you to be here with us, with father, with sister! It’s just not fair!”

She looks at her younger daughter who, unlike her sister, couldn't hold her tears back and droplets of tears crawl over her cheeks. The mother gently placed her hand on the child’s head.

“Don’t cry, my child. I won’t be gone. I’ll be by your side. And your sister’s too. I will oversee you two from the heavens.”

Despite what she had said, the daughter was still pouring droplets of tears from her eyes. She couldn’t accept that her mother was dying. She didn’t want to accept it. She didn’t want to accept the reality that someone so close to her will be gone for good and will never be by her side anymore.

With an ounce of her strength left, she reached for her daughter’s hand and gave something to her. A hand-size pendant.

“Please, take this, my child.”

“M-Mother?”

“This family heirloom was a gift from my mother, and my mother’s before her. It was passed down for generations. Now, I’m giving this to you as a successor. Not just a piece of jewelry, but a memory. And while you wear it around your neck, a guardian angel will protect you.”

“A guardian…angel?”

Can a guardian angel be true? Can they really protect her? The girl wasn’t sure if what her mother said was true. She wasn’t sure if angels actually exist. If that were the case, if angeles does exist, then why can’t they protect her mother? Why don’t they show themselves and cure her from her illness? But they didn’t.

“Sheri. My little snowflake. You were always innocent and pure of heart. You were so concerned about others and helped them for the right cause while not worrying about yourself. You have grown so much.”

“No mother! I have so much to learn from you. Please stay!”

“Don’t fret, my child. You have a long life ahead of you. I want you to cherish it.”

“…”

“Until then, you will find someone…who you will be destined…to meet.”

“Mother?! Mother!!”

Drawing her final breath, the mother’s hands dropped. Any sign of life that was within her was no longer to be found. She was gone. And the daughter cries.

Urbria, the Queen of Silovilio, the wife of Briomaar and the mother of two daughters, has left the world of the living.
