《Reigner’s Reincarnation》Chapter 1

Death? I don’t want to die however I don’t fear it either… I have died once already. I was originally from Earth, however I died at the age of thirty-two while taking a short cut through a construction site. A white truck of all things fell on top of me while I was walking home from work. When I awoke, I was in this world, naked, in the middle of a glowing circle.

At the start I was super excited learning about Classes, Magic, Stats, Magicians, Monsters, Magic, Dungeons, and Magic! I always dreamed of using magic long before coming to this world. Being able to summon lightning or demons to do my bidding. It sounds way better then constantly using your body, running around as fast as you can, swinging a sword over and over and over and I’m so sick of swinging a sword around.

In this world I have no magical talent at all. Instead, I was called Hero, ‘Reigner of the Silent Sword’. Named Silent due to my lack of mana, the energy that forms magic. Unable to use magic and unaffected by it. Though it’s not all bad. The Hero class comes with bonuses to stat gain, and with those stats I can move at speeds invisible to the average Adventurer’s eye. I can use some magical items at least, just nothing that requires mana to activate. Finding and collecting magical items has become one of my most enjoyable hobbies and is the best part of ascending the Tower.

When I first arrived, they named me Hero. But what is a Hero? It’s said that a Hero is someone that will save the people. A person that will challenge dungeons, defeat the overlord, and bring in a new era of peace. Someone that will spend their life fighting, risking their life over and over while everyone else just sits back and watches. Sounds great! long as that hero is not you and by you, I mean me.

What does it mean to be a Hero? It means endless days of training all year round without a break, constant lessons on dungeon lore, monster lore, magic lore, item lore, trap lore… All before even stepping in a dungeon.

You would think once training is over that you would have freedom to move as you like. Instead, the people put all their hopes and expectations on you and watch every move you make like a hawk. The ruling class put together a group of Adventurers and called them the “Hero support team”, a traditional dungeon team that includes a Warrior, Priest, Rogue, and Mage. Nice enough people, however, I quickly learned they are here more to watch and report on my actions than provide assistance.

Then there is me. Standing at six-foot tall, brown hair, dark blue eyes, short beard, and a burly physique. The Hero. Summoned from Earth, by order of the king, to save the world and defeat the Tower.

Yup a tower. A massive pillar of stone and magic that is at the centre of what used to be a city. The historians said that the Tower used to be a great boon for tens of thousands of years. Providing access to rare trade goods, crafting materials, magical items, and more.

The tower of today is infested with an endless number of creatures that if not constantly culled swarm out of the tower and wreak destruction to the land, killing anyone unlucky enough to be in their sights. Half of the adventurers today have been conscripted into the army, defending the new city, while the other half brave the tower.

It is believed by the seers that the tower was once ruled by a Demi-God and since their death has gone out of control. They say that once the topmost floor has been cleared the tower will either collapse or go dormant.

Twenty seven years of non-stop weapon training and floor climbing has finally put me here, face to face with the last Guardian of the Tower. I couldn’t tell you what number this floor is since I stopped counting after a hundred.

I felt like it would never end… until tonight.

Taking a step forward I look up, and up, and up some more until finally I gaze at the face of the final Guardian of the Tower. The top third of its body is covered in shadow. The only light visible are two white orbs of light, the Guardian’s eyes, glaring down towards me.

“I was expecting someone taller!” I lie, straining my neck looking up at the Guardian.

Coming death! These are the first thoughts to run through my head however I quickly realise that these emotions are not my own. The Guardian must have some fear ability or aura. Quite a strong one for it to have any kind of impact on me.

Focusing back on the giant colossus in front of me, I use ‘inspect’, a skill that allows me to garner some information on whatever is observed, however before I could check the results, a dark grey blur rushes towards me at an incredible speed. The Guardian’s attack quickly takes up my entire vision.

I don’t have enough time to dodge so my only option is to strike first before I get hit. At near lightspeed, I pull out my blade and slice at the giant moving shadow in front of me in one smooth motion. My body performing the movement perfectly after years of endless repetition.

The world becomes silent and all that can be seen is a thin line of light from where I waved my sword. The giant grey mass splits into two and blurs past me on either side while I remain untouched. The ground shakes and after a second, sound starts returning to the space around me.

Looking behind I can see a giant slab of stone half buried into the Tower floor. Readying myself and looking back, the Guardian is holding the remains of what looks to be a stone hammer the size of a house.

This guardian is no joke, it’s so massive that I can’t keep the entire body inside my field of view!

A window of information from my skill pops into my vision.

[Guardian, Lord Xo]

Health: 5,000,000

Level: ???

Class: Berserker

Race: Demi-God, Giant (Undead)

Immunities: Mental attacks. Magic damage.

Weakness: None

Those seers might have been right after all. Undead, Demi-God, and magic immunity. No wonder it’s so massive! The Undeadi-God starts moving, preparing to throw what’s left of the giant hammer towards me.

Before it can build momentum, I crouch slightly putting energy into my legs, then push off the floor, Leaving behind an explosion of noise, dust, and debris. Any adventurer seeing this might think “wow he is flying” but sadly flight needs magic and since I can’t use mana… this is just me jumping with my full might.

While in the air I position my blade and tense my arms for a powerful strike. Undeadi-God? Undead Demigod? My naming sense could be better.

As I continue to move closer, the giants head starts to fill my entire vision, until all I can see are its glowing white eyes. Magical, glowing orbs, for eyes… this Tower continues to mock me!

Moving closer I can see an image of myself reflected off its golden mirror like skin.

The mouth of the giant opens and suddenly the world fills with noise. It feels like the very air is being ripped apart. Everything in my vision is vibrating uncontrollably. Feeling close enough, my arms flicker in a series of movements, leaving behind thin white lines extending outwards and cutting everything in front of me. The air stops being ripped apart and goes silent. I reach the zenith of my leap and start falling. I gaze up at my handy work.

The Giant’s eyes become dim as white lines can be seen crisscrossing all over its head and neck. The head starts to disassemble into smaller pieces and falls toward me.

This seems to be a problem, I used most of my energy in that last strike and only have enough to control my landing. I won’t be able to dodge or cut any of the Giant’s falling mass. I used the last of the stamina potions just before entering the Guardians floor. Looking up I see that the Guardian’s… head bits are dissolving into motes of bright red light. I notice that its body is also breaking up into red orbs of light. Pretty, like I’m in a sky filled with shooting stars. Only the stars are going up while I’m falling… no… Second half jumping? Post leaping?... Calculating my landing! Wouldn’t want to give the impression I don’t have control of my decent… heh.

I notice that I have lost 40% health from the giants scream alone. Good thing I was not hit by that hammer. Those thousands of hours training was not wasted.

I lament to myself once again that I am unable to use magic. I have always been fascinated with magic, the ability to manipulate the very elements is just so cool! And those that study magic can live for hundreds of years! Nearly everyone born in this world has an affinity to a magical domain and can earn a long lifespan. I’ll be lucky to reach 80years.

During my training, the Grand Magi were fascinated by my affinities. They told me I’m very special indeed. One in a billion! they say. One of those lucky people that have 0 in every single god damned affinity of magic!

“Argh!” in my frustrated thoughts I land on the ground, kick the nearest thing next to me, which happened to be the handle of the dead undead Demi-God’s… dead Undeadi-God?… regular Deadi-God?... The Guardian’s hammer... The broken weapon flies into a wall some distance away creating a boom that echoes outwards.

Oh well…There is still the loot to look forward to!

Behind where the giant Guardian was standing is a golden door. I can’t help but start to drool at what might be behind such an appealing entrance. Frowning, I notice that there is a series of locks on the door. The team Rogue is not here so he can’t blame if I just… Pulling out my sword I make a few slices, cutting the door down to small, hand sized, easy to carry chunks.

Walking into the room, there are six large chests, two on each wall. A small marble pillar with a book floating above, stands in the middle of the room. Opening one of the chests revealed, thousands of gold coins, glowing trinkets, and hundreds of gems. Looking into the other chests revealed that they all contained more of the same. I can’t help but feel disappointed. I was hoping to find something special on the last floor of the tower. The chests contain what has been found on almost every floor below. That just leaves the book. I’m sure it will make the team’s mage very happy.

Walking up to the pillar I use inspect on the book.

[Tome of New beginnings]

Rank: Godly

On use: Class change to Summoner. Transportation to Tower(?)’s entrance.

“GODLY?!” Yelling out in excitement I grasp onto the sides of the pillar.

I might not be a wizened mage that has researched magic for over 200 years but considering how large my collection has become, I consider myself a bit of an expert when it comes to magical items. However, I have never heard about an item of Godly rank before.

“Reigner! We made it through!”

Jumping at the sound I look back at the entrance of the floor and, see the support team entering.

Damnit! If they even get a glance at this book, they will want to bring it back to the master mages for study. If they get their near immortal lifespan’s hands on it, I might never get to see it again, in my lifetime!

“Was there a door here?... Oh Hey, the loot room! Reigner is over here guys!” I hear the team rogue, Lex, enter the room and move to one of the chests.

“Hey Hero, you did it!” the silky voice of the team mage, Lilly, echoes from the doorway “What was the Guardian like?”. She is the only member of the team I genuinely get along with as we both share a passion for magical items. She’s the only mage I have met that doesn’t look down on me for my lack of mana affinity. “Oh! what’s that? a book?” It’s only a moment until she… “GODLY!?” Glancing over my shoulder I can see Lilly staring at the book, her hands reaching out slowly.

I can’t let this opportunity go! In the time between heartbeats, before anyone can make a move, I grab hold of the book and open it to the first page. “What are you doing!” is the last thing I hear as my vision fills with white light.

After a few seconds my eyes start to adjust to the brightness. Looking up from the book I see I’m now standing, alone, in a hallway made of light that seems to stretch on forever. In the distance, something in that infinite hallway, is coming towards me incredibly fast.

As it gets closer, I can recognise what it is. It’s a truck… A white truck.

“You are joking” I say out loud… The last sound I hear is my own laugher as the truck slams into me.
