《Dungeon of books》A New World in a Book? - Chapter 9

POV - Celestia
The birds chirp in the distance, the sun casts shade from the trees. The sheer impossibility of the seen in front of me leaves me in a stupor. They were suddenly outside, by just opening a book they were outside. How was this possible? Is that why the librarian told me to open the book when I was with my party. I look around to see if I was in an illusion but no the rest of my party is still there. I can tell from the look on their faces their just as confused as I am. Arthur is also looking around and when our eyes meet I try to open my mouth to ask if we're seeing the same thing but Noel yells before me, “Oh, Fuck me with a poleaxe, what the fuck is this.” Hearing those words Simmons is also knocked out of his stupor.
Arthur trying to get our attention back on him says, “I believed that book either teleported us somewhere or we are now in the book.”
Simmons then chimes in, “I do believe Celestia is holding a piece of paper.” he then raises his finger and points at my hand that is currently holding a slip of paper.
The paper was in my left hand, I rase up the paper to meet my eyes and notice that there are notes written on the paper, ‘There have been sightings of kobolds going in and out the area. We task you with finding out why the kobolds are here, what they are doing, and if possible eliminate all kobolds found.’ It is clear to see that this is an adventures guild quest but it is written in a different style than the ones I have seen.
“Hey Priestess,” Noel yells in such an exaggerated tone it is insulting, “What does the god damn note say.”
Realizing that I have just been studying the note for all this time, I feel embarrassed and quickly yelp out, “It looks like a note that is given out from the guild but I have never seen this kind before.”
Arthur then says in a calming tone, “May I see the note for a second, I want to see what we're getting into.” Reaching out his hand as if beckoning me to place the note into his hand.
I clumsy place the note into Arthur’s hand and then quickly take back my hand still embarrassed of my actions. Arthur then brings the note near his face where he can read it. After a second or two he brings the note out of his face with a thoughtful look then says, “This looks like an investigation-type quest. With this, I can say we are firmly in the book, mostly because it is as if we are now in the shoes of someone else. From the guild request, I can see that we're meant to find out what the kobolds are doing here and exterminate them if we can. That only leaves the questions of what are kobolds and are there any other threats we need to worry about.”

I can see a thoughtful look from Noel and Simmons after Arthur gives the quick explanations of what we're going into. I also start to think about the mission we are going into, like are we appropriately leveled for the adventure we are going on? But before I can think any deeper on the matter Arthur speaks up again, “I believe it is in our best interest to stay together and scout around. Behind us is most likely the only way out of the book and we can only leave once we have investigated what is going on”
Surprised to hear this I turn around to come face to face with a path that is in between two cliff edges. I am shocked that I haven’t noticed this before but I attributed it to my lack of awareness when we first came into this book world. I bring my attention back to Arthur and he seems to be rapping up his speech, “That is why were are going to do the bare minimum and then go to the guild to report this place. ” He then pauses for a few seconds to recollect his thoughts then he continues, “Alright let's regroup up, same order as when we entered the library, stay silent and stay together.”
It took a few seconds until we were back in a group together. Arthur then silently walks forward into the forest that is spread out in front of us. We continued to walk in the forest for what seemed like hours, then suddenly I hear a growl coming from my left. I was about to shout this out but I then notice that everyone else also heard it and is moving into a place where it would be easier to fight whatever is coming. After a few seconds of running, we make it to a spot that is relatively devoid of trees but is not big enough to count as a clearing. Arthur ushers me and Simmons behind him and Noel. After we get into position, a few seconds pass without anything happening, then a large wolf steps out followed by 5 more of an equal size. The wolf doesn’t immediately try to pounce on us just splitting up and slowly circling us. They're at a distance where Noel or Arthur can’t run out and kill one then come back in before there is an opening. Before they are at the point where they almost form a half-circle around us Simmons cast a spell.
Simmons points his staff at the wolf on the far left silently speaking words while still mouthing them. When he finishes whatever he was saying, runes suddenly start to form out of the wind. The runes then brake apart from the circle into a crescent. The runes fade, and I hear a displacement of wind. I turn my eyes to the wolf on our left, and I can see that Simmons's attack cut the wolf's head in half.

This kick starts things into motion the wolf on my right then jumps at me seeing as I am the weakest target. Arthur then steps in in front of me to block the wolf lunge with his shield. Doing this leaves an opening for the 2 other wolves to take on Noel. The other 1 then comes hurdling towards me. I raise my hand and imagine the barrier spell that I learned, with that and prayer to Apollo, [Barrier of Light], a curtain of light falls into the path of me and the wolf. I take a quick look at Arthur to see that he shield bash the wolf's nose, with the wolf now dazed he swings down his sword at an angle where it hit the wolf's neck decapitating it. I bring my eyes from Arthur to Noel who is handling the wolves with ease. I then notice that the wolves have separated her from the party and then back her up against a tree. As I was watching the wolf corner Noel, I hear another displacement of wind and see one of the wolves decapitated. I look back a Simmons who has now moved into line of sight of the wolf he had just killed still pointing his staff forward. With one less wolf attacking, Noel then dodges an attack, with the opening of not having a second wolf attacking at this time, she brings down her long sword onto the side of the wolf almost bisecting the creature. With only the wolf that is being kept at bay by my barrier still alive, Arthur quickly impales its head with his sword from behind the wolf.
“That was fun and freeing,” Noel says, stepping over a corpse of a wolf. “I got injured though Priestess, can you help me?” She says in a tone knowing that I will already heal her.
I toy with the idea of not helping her but I discard the idea, I walk over to go and heal her. “Alright, let me just see the wound,” I say wanting to get this over with. Noel then walks over and shows me her right arm which was cut lightly by the wolf's claws. I then realized that she has been attacking with her left arm. I then wonder if she is left-handed or was it is because she has been wounded she switch hands? Discarding the thoughts from my head I raise my hand over the wound, then I imagine her muscle and skin growing, stitching them selfs together to form a perfect whole once more, [Heal]. I then open my eyes to see a light glow coming from my hands. I then glance at the light wound to see tendrils of muscle wiggling and fusing with other tendrils to reform her muscle, I watch making sure everything goes back together fine. When I see that her skin now completely covers the muscle that had been regrown, I nod then say, “It is completely healed”, I almost ask for a few coins for the treatment cost out of sheer habit, but I bit my tongue stopping me from saying any more.
“Man I hate healing spells it always feels like a thousand bugs are crawling all over my wound and pulling it together,” Noel says out loud giving her thoughts of healing out to anyone who can hear it.
“If you two are done, I would like you to come over here,” Arthur says while standing over one of the wolves.
I and Noel walks over to the location of Arthur, and see what he has found looking at the wolves. “So what is the problem with the wolves,” I ask Arthur because he seems to be dismantling the wolf.
“I originally thought that these were monsters or magical beasts but it turns out to be neither, it is just a regular wolf with no magic,” Arthur says in a puzzled tone wondering how they struggled with just regular animals.
I take a quick look around to see if Simmons has anything to say on the matter just to see him lying under a tree in its shade a few meters away from the wolves' corpses. So I just look away from him back to Arthur and say, “If these are regular animals would that mean we’re too low level to continue.”
“Oh my, Priestess did you think we are this weak. I didn’t even use my sword techniques yet, Simmons has only used wind blade and your paladin friend has not even cast a spell yet.” Noel says in an artificial arrogant tone with a big stupid smile plastered over her face.
“I would like to say your the only one too low level for this area, but don’t worry. We will help you level up and get stronger in this area. This area does look like a good area to level up.” Simmons buts in, now standing right next to me.
“I have investigated the wolf’s body and I found it does not have a beast core or anything else worth value except the pelt. We don’t have the time to dismantle a pelt, and then let it dry before more creatures come that I may not be able to handle.” Arthur with a thoughtful look on his face that morphs back into his calm leadership face continues, “Everyone back into party formation, we need to find these Kobolds then get out of here to report this to the guild.” Hearing this all of us stand up, and get back into our location within the party with less delay than last time. We then head out of the battlefield in search of these Kobolds.

Beta Test
I'm sure I'm in for some colorful criticism, But if even a few people enjoy this, I'd be happy. As of right now the story is set in Delaware around 2005'ish'. A young man from the streets, aquires a beta test invitation in an unorthodox way. The plan is to have a comical adventure in an experimental virtual reality game. I can easily transition it to a full story if its well received. If not I hope atleast one person kinda likes it. P.s. This is a work of fiction, with made up characters. Any likeness is coincidence.
