《Master of All Trades》Inferno Part 2

'What is going on?' Raphael asked himself, curious as to what had happened. He now wandered in white space that stretched infinitely in all directions with not another living soul in sight. 'Last thing I remember was the purple fire. Purple fire….' As Raphael attempted to understand the situation he was in he came to a conclusion with the viable information and so he asked himself. 'Am I dead?'
It was a truly sincere question that anyone in his situation would ask themselves, after all, there was no one and nothing in sight. However, there was something that felt wrong, or incorrect was more precise to say. How could someone dead be aware they are dead? So he discarded the idea and instead focused on the purple inferno that was seared in his mind. For some reason or another, he could not forget such a memory, no matter how violent the flames became, to Raphael they were the most beautiful colors he had ever witnessed.
He had read in books that the greatest of magicians were capable of using all elements and that sometimes the key to using other elements was to mimic nature, to truly understand what magic was. That is why Raphael found it so easy to manipulate water, as it inhabited the land and gave life to any creature or plant that resided in or near it. It also dropped from the sky, nourishing the dry land as it quenched its thirst. However, water was also inside of people, and people moved all the time, albeit unconsciously.
Raphael only needed to externalize this feeling and that was how he discovered how to use water magic however simple it may be. Fire, on the other hand, had no such symmetry to life and was mostly muted in Raphael's eyes, having not a single speck of life in it to speak of. At least that was the case until he saw the wolf that harnessed purple flames. The fire that grew from the body of the midnight fur was so vibrant and enticing that it had more life than the creatures that monotounsly lived their lives. It had more character than that of a dozen people combined. And most of all it was more intense than all the emotions of one's life put together.

So Raphael reached out in the white space he was in trying to get a fraction of that flame to call his own. To his surprise, a purple light appeared a great distance away, and he believed he achieved what he had desired, but soon the purple light grew closer. He felt that something was awry as he began to focus more intensely, but did nothing to help as the purple sped up and was ever nearer. Anxiety began to well up within Raphael as his mouth became dry and his body hot, then his body began to act on its own as his mind faded. Instinct took over, fear and anger took hold of the reins that controlled his body.
As the two intense emotions battled for supremacy, and the purple flame in the shape of large was close enough to describe the details of its fangs an idea had finally clicked. Within the white space that began to be consumed by violet flames, a new fire was born in response. A fire so small that it could be considered a spark if not for its constant blaze. Unlike the violent and crazy violet flame that had no qualms about destruction, this flame was created in desperation. Unfathomable desperation gave birth to an opportunity. That opportunity gave Raphael the ability to change the outcome of this battle.
The delicate red flame grew brighter as the purple rushed to consume the minute flicker of light. However, unknown to the manic violet flame it had chewed off more than it could swallow.
One aspect that all flames had in common was their endless hunger that would lead to their timely deaths. And the hungriest of flames were newborns that viewed the world as a platter of food meant for them and them alone. Unlike the older violet flame that had its share of food and grew in accordance to that, the younger flame was as eager as it was hungry. And it was hungry. Yes, the purple inferno that surrounded it would become a good meal.

Nowhere Stars
For as long as anyone can remember, humans have been preyed upon by Harbingers, living nightmares which devour dreams and passions and souls, and defended by Keepers. These children alone hold the gift of magic, the wild and wondrous ability to impose emotions over reality and empower their frail bodies with the splendor of their souls. Under their protection, humanity was able to survive and thrive. While modern Keepers have come to enjoy a social position somewhere between celebrities and religious idols, very few accept the mantle simply to be a hero. The Messengers of the Goddess Claiasya, spirits charged with awakening the magic in suitable souls, promise that Keepers who consume and purify enough Harbingers will obtain the power to change themselves or the world in nearly any way they wish. It’s for this purpose that Liadain Shiel, a young girl born terminally ill, throws herself into life as a Keeper when her opportunity comes, hoping against hope to rewrite her fate and save her life while she still can. But magic wants its wielders to grow and change, not simply continue living, and the secrets swimming beneath the sea and behind the sky have lives and designs of their own. Nowhere Stars is an ongoing fantasy-horror web novel about traumacore magical girls, nightmares clothed in ribbons and lace, alienation from reality, and broken children twisting the world into whatever shape they must to make their dreams come true. Cutting to Life: an NPC LitRPG (Battle Royale)
Nikola is an NPC in The World of Wills, a video game where players can feel sensations as if they were truly there. She leads a life of bloodshed and murder - that is, until one day she wakes up sapient. Just as she begins thinking real, non-scripted thoughts and making connections, she and the players in the game are told that if they die in the game, they die in real life - and it's time to get killing. But what of Nikola, the emerging AI consciousness? How does she win in a game that can only end in her being wiped from existence at the end of it all? - Updates Mondays and Fridays. Cutting to Life is a slow-burn LitRPG with a villainous (later anti-hero, or maybe still villainous, haha) female lead. It's told from the perspective of Nikola, an NPC within the World of Wills who's become sapient and is now mysteriously able to play the game as a PC. It's quite light for a LitRPG, but the system and stats become more of a focus later when Nikola herself can access them. The story gradually builds into a Battle Royale where the players' lives are on the line (if you die in the game, you die in real life), and only one party of savvy adventurers can win. They'll have to spend their time and stats wisely as dungeons promising rare gear float down from the sky - but is a legendary sword worth killing someone for, knowing they'll stay dead forever? - This story is told in third person, past tense.- This is a slow-burn LitRPG that spends a lot of time establishing its setting and characters, because I believe this will make for a better payoff in the end. As such, the Battle Royale doesn't start until chapter 30 or so.- Chapters are anywhere between 800 words and 3000 words long.- Book cover by Vixeona.Cutting to Life is also being posted on SPB and Scribble Hub.Thank you sincerely for reading.
