《Celestial Cycle》Chapter 1

Sitting in the lotus with his eyes closed, a young man with long black hair and an unruly beard takes a deep breath as a red, blue, brown, green, and grey orb rotates around a smaller silver one. They rotate above his head causing his long black hair flows around as if the wind was blowing around him in the room. A rainbow-like fog can be seen swirling around him slowly being drawn to whichever orb that shared a color with it. A small silver fog slowly begins to show causing the other fogs to move out of the way and allow the silver fog to pass as if allowing royalty to pass. As the silver fog starts to be drawn to the silver orb, the orb starts to hum as the two connect but after just a few seconds the humming stops and suddenly a large explosion is expelled from the silver orb.
“Sir Aesir!”
“Dragis!”
The young man was on the floor with clothes in disarray and several burn marks on them. A younger man with brown hair and a lab assistant grey clock shook him violently. The young man on the floor opened his eyes and looked around his lab beginning to laugh as he saw that it was a complete disaster.
“Are you ok? We heard what sounded like an explosion from outside.”
Looking up he saw the other young man and behind him an older man dressed in military red of a city guard with darker almost black hair.
“Gurgy and Rensler I am fine just a slight bump on the head from a small experiment gone wrong,” Dragis said slightly embarrassed.
“I thought you were going to wait for me to return before starting the test,” Gurgy said as he reached down and grabbed Dragis’s arm helping him up on his feet.
Dragis laughed “I did not start the initial test. I was doing my magic breathing trying to recover from last night’s tests and the elemental slime for the test reacted to the excess concentration of ether fog causing it to combust.” Dragis says while standing up with the assistance of Gurgy, dusting off his white lab coat that had a silver trim showing he was a master of a lab.
“Sir you should have expected such a reaction from the concentrated either fog you create while in the gathering state. You are a ranked 7 magical core at the age of 20 that is considered outrageous even by the military branches much less your tecnomagic branch.
Their world was one of both magic and technology with a society that was split between five branches; Military, Technomagic, Infrastructure, Government, and Citizens. Once you started training in magical or physical aspects, you started as an initiate then advance through the other eight ranks of internal, external, foundation, core, king, emperor, lord, and divine. Each of the ranks are divided into nine levels.

“O Rensler! You are just mad that I am more powerful than you.” Dragis says with a slight grin
“If I had the benefit of being born in the Aesir family I would have long ago passed you; even though you had almost perfect potential in magic and intellect you have only decent potential in the physical aspect. Sir” he said the sir in as sarcastic a tone as possible.
“Come on Rensler we used to all be best friends till those stupid tests. At least you got a high potential in the physical aspect the best I got was decent in intellect and if not for Dragis I would have probably been a mortal.” Gurgy said almost depressed.
“Guys, guys that were in the past and both of you have benefited from me joining the Odin branch so what if it is all because of me,” Dragis said in a grandiose fashion
Suddenly three more men dressed in military red walked in with a confident sneer followed by a female that whose whole body seemed to give off an aura of superiority dressed in a white lab coat with golden trim signifying that she was an overseer.
“Mr. Aesir this is the third time this month that you have damaged your lab! You have cost us more this month than all the other labs combined!” she yelled with a smug face.
With an innocent smile, Dragis spoke as if lecturing a child “Mistress Hella how can we possibly advance our current limits without a few minor setbacks first. Also in all fairness, we have made probably twice what these setbacks have cost us with the fire and water stone I invented earlier in the year”
She looked directly at Dragis with a look that could kill “If it were not for that very stone that houses the ability to fuse those two opposing elements and you being a member of the Aesir family, you and your peons would have long ago been kicked out of here and if I had my way made mortal”
Dragis’s face darkened as he released his magical pressure making everyone who had just entered the room start to sweat, their faces turning pale, and causing his hair and lab coat to whip around “Mistress how does one with such exterior beauty have such an ugly personality? You seem to forget something that goes beyond the stone and my family, something I gained on my own, I am also valued for my magical prowess and before you threaten to turn me and my friends mortal you may want to remember that outside of the older generation no one is on my level of power.”
Hella’s eyes open with fear and anger as Dragis places enough pressure on the guards ahead of her to cause them to kneel “Mr. Aesir during the ancient times power may have made right but right is now determined by the rules and those rules follow what the majority say and you should also know I am working with the Dreakar family as the personal magictech. So, don’t you, who is merely a branch bloodline member of the Aesir threaten me!”

Dragis raised his voice “Do you think someone who takes money from the labs for their own personal gain. Promotes people not on their contribution or value to the techno-magic branch but because they greased your hands or told to by your masters has a right to lecture me on rules and which ones I should follow? I have remained quiet because you allow me to work normally without much interruption and leave my lab funds alone but I tell you this if you push me too far I will make sure that the Aesir will know of every breach of protocol on your behalf!”
The Aesir were one of the main starting families of Asgard and was the bloodline that the prime founders Odin, Thor, Loki, Hamdell, and Dwarfa were from. They currently control about a third of the Odin branch by bloodline and a good portion more by allies. The only other family that could come close was the Dreakar family who had about a quarter of the Odin branch.
Dragis slowly stops emitting pressure allowing the guards to stand as Hella starts to back up towards the door to leave, her face pale but with a venomous look still on it. Before the door that they left through closes, she looks back and says “Do not think this is over Mr.Aesir.”
“Sir are you sure you should have upset her so much?” Rensler said with fear on his face.
“Rensler you should know me well enough by now to know that any who threaten my friends I will not back down from no matter the consequences.”
Rensler with a smile of gratitude “Thank you, sir”
Gurgy finally gaining his wits “That bitch she thinks she can turn us into mortals she does not understand your abilities and overestimates her own!”
“Gurgy language!” A female voice rings out
“Sorry lady Deardrea Pious.” Gurgy says with a smile and a slight bashful look
In walks a young blond whose beauty surpassed even Hella and was wearing a white bronze trimmed scientist lab coat who wore an upset look on her face. She was Deardrea Pious a member of the family responsible for the Church of Life and one of the larger families and one of the only ones that spanned to all the islands.
“Dragis what did you do this time?” She yells as she walked up standing face to face with him making him look down at her from her shorter height “I heard the explosion from the storage area and saw Hella red-faced and ranting about you and how you need to be put in your place. Don’t you know she could pull your silver stripe and take all our research and give it to the Dreakar family? You are unbelievable you can’t just follow procedures just because…:” Dragis places his hand on her mouth interrupting her. She struggles for a second then shoots him a death glare as the other two in the room start to laugh.
“My fair lady it causes me great joy that such a beauty would be so worried over my wellbeing. I will be fine there are too many people who have placed their hopes in me to become an elder and to bring a new era to what we know of magic for such a small person to cause me pain. But if you wish to comfort me we could always go to my chambers and you could comfort me to your heart's content.”
She unleashes a blast of physical energy and kicks him in the shin making him let go and kneel grabbing his shin in pain. “In your dreams you no good doctor.” She makes to leave then stops and turns looks back with a wicked grin placing her hand on her hip “If you wish for me to “comfort” you first you have to find a way to get my father to give his blessings for us to marry and you know he doesn’t like the mischievous you.” She then turns and leaves the room.
“Sir I feel that fireball may not even be within your magical skills to handle” Rensler jokes.
“Dragis you know her dad will never allow it right?” Gurgy says apologetically.
“You two can just leave my lab if you are just going to pour salt in a wound.” They proceed to leave patting Dragis on the back with a mix of pity and humor. “I will have her one day,” Dragis says then releasing his full power with a quick set of hand signs a silver light emits from his body till it feels the room. As the light covers the room it begins to fix itself and return to a state before the explosion. “If I could show this power to others no one would look down on me for being a member of a branch family of the Aesir, but till I know where it came from, how to make it stronger, and if it has any negative backlashes I must be careful.”
If he had known what was coming he would have stopped using that magic then but he was a fool using forbidden magic and knowledge that was not meant for mortals.

Leftover Apocalypse
[Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] This is a story about the newly-adult Calliope Smith having a terrible day that ends in her getting mysteriously teleported from Phoenix, Arizona to a fantasy world where her life is in constant danger. She considers this an upgrade. Someone evil is looking for her, and she doesn't know why. Someone who seems to know a lot about her has promised they'll help her, but she doesn't know who they are. All that matters to Callie is that magic is real and one way or another she's going to learn it. The end of the world is coming up, sure, but Callie won't need to worry about that. In fact, by the time she even finds out about it one of the doomsday devices will already be destroyed, and the authorities will be well on the way to dealing with the other one. It's fine. Everything will be smooth sailing. Almost certainly. Probably. Chapters are usually about 2500-3500 words, and the goal is to post 2-3 per week but I sometimes get busy or have some writers block. It's your standard portal fantasy / Isekai premise, but unlike some the main character's time on Earth and how she got pulled into another world will (eventually) be explored. Some slight GameLit-feeling stuff later, no menus or level-ups but there's something suspiciously like a skill tree when the magic system gets going. No number crunching, and while the main character will get to do some silly stuff she won't be a god like in some fics (and will in fact spend a lot of time being badly outclassed by her enemies). Some reader interaction, ranging from adding to the worldbuilding to occasionally making big important decisions about skill progression. Please note that the main character is flawed and impulsive, and will make some stupid decisions. That's part of the story, but I get that it's not for everyone. Trigger Warnings: Foster care system references, crappy parenting. Some mental health adjacent stuff, specifically the main character has some issues where she experiences varying levels of empathy and emotional vulnerability depending on the day (it's complicated and not meant to portray any real-world conditions). Occasional violence including mention of death and grievous bodily harm, but no detailed descriptions of gore.
