《The Outer Gods》Chapter 12

A few people looked and pointed at us from the stairs heading down, but most of the people on the street ignored us. We slowly walked down the sidewalk until Charles asked me “Where do you plan on going miss?”
“To a carpenter, I need some wood made.” I reply back, and Charles gave me a look of curiosity.
Charles quickly leads me down some streets until we got to a large shop. “Wooden Wonderland” it was labeled. We went inside, and a few eyes inside the shop turned, some paying more attention than others. I went to the counter, and asked “May I meet with a carpenter?”
“They are all busy, come back later.” The clerk replied sharply, clearly annoyed that I, who looked like a hobo at that point was interrupting her napping on the counter.
Charles caught up to me and pulled out an emblem and pointed it to the girl “We are here to see the Master Carpenter Derek, please guide me to him.”
She looked at the badge with her mouth open “Of course! Please follow me.”
She gestured us to follow and after a few more long hallways and doors we got to a room with a gentlemen standing working on something on a workbench pushed against the wall of the room. He appeared to be chiseling something very fine and was completely concentrating on the object.
“Master Derek,” “What!?” The man shouted “Lass! Didn’t I tell you not to interrupt unless something impor-” He turned to look at me and Charles “Apprentice Charles!” His mood seemed to turn one eighty degrees “How are you lad? How is Mage Avius treating you? Getting all the necessities you need from the old man?” “Yes, I’m doing quite well and yes, Master Avius is treating me well, but I came to you today due to his next apprentice’s request.”

“Oh, you are his next apprentice?!” He turned and looked at me “How is it like in the tower? Must be much better than all of us have it down here.”
“It is nice, the food and living space are all great.” I smiled back.
“I’m sure they are lass, but anyways, what was your request. I hate to be rude to Charles here being a long time patriot of my store but I am a bit busy at the moment due to large amounts of orders.”
“I have a few custom parts I need made.”
“Custom parts don’t help, be specific miss. Do you want a custom sculpture? Or perhaps a display stand?”
“Neither, I need some parts for a device I’m creating.”
“A device you say, what sort of device?”
“That's a trade secret, I reply curiously. “Charles, do you happen to have a few pieces of paper?”
Charles took out a paper and a fine quill, alongside a small glass canister of ink. I took the quill and tried to activate the drawings I saw before on my vision, except putting them on top of the paper to trace.
Slowly but surely it worked, and as soon as some of it was on the paper I started tracing the parts. Slow at first, but steadily picking up speed and soon I had six pages front and back filled with designs I needed.
Derek looked at them, then went through them again, and again, and finally looked at me and whispered “Miss, which school did you study from?” I looked at him blankly for a second “These designs are something nobles might even had a hard time making, not to mention commoners. I can’t even get a basic understanding of how it works from looking at it.”

“So… Can you do it?”
“Give me a few days, I’ll see what I can do” Derek replied before setting the design files on his desk and getting a block of wood from a pile near the corner of the workbench.
Charles nudged me and whispered “He’s going to be in concentration for the next few days, lets leave it there.” and me, Charles, and the clerk walked out and the clerk guided us back downstairs where we left the store. While walking down the streets, Charles replied “Alexis, thank you. I haven’t seen Derek that interested in a device since I helped him make his first staff. I’ll be honest with you, when I saw your designs I saw potential, the potential to make something great. If you ever need assistance from me, your always free to ask.” Charles replies as the sun set and we walked back to the tower.

The Storm started six months ago, and no one knows where it came from. All they know is it hasn't stopped for a single day, and you better follow the one rule: Don't go out in the rain. Hiding in the broken building of her old high-school, seventeen-year-old Marylou is one of the few to have survived this far. She doesn't believe in the Ghosts -- shapeless creatures said to roam under the rain outside -- but, to be fair, she doesn't really believe in anything except booze and the unconditioned love of her ball python snake, Evil Noodle. Chance brings Marylou together with Amy, a mysterious girl with an even more mysterious past, and Dean and Ray, two young men running what they call 'the last pizza place in California'. As the Storm rages on stronger by the day, the foursome will have to make a choice: keep hiding under roof after roof, waiting for starvation, or set out to the road and face whatever hides out there, under the Storm.
