《The Outer Gods》Chapter 2

After locking her door rather hastily, she set the flint on the floor. She started to stare at it, trying to remember if she had seen it before.
‘Could it have been from when I was a baby? But why would it suddenly come to me now, and how would I remember a random stone with writing on it?’
She pondered on it for a while but in the end decided to just sleep, as it was already rather late and she was feeling quite drowsy from the running she did earlier.
She went to the warmer corner of the room, curled up into a ball and slept, unaware of what awaited her in the morning.
…
Morning came and she woke up rubbing her eyes with her already dirty jacket, when something bright blue appeared within the middle of her vision. She tried rubbing her eyes again, and then again, but it didn’t go away.
[The God *&@^!& has taken interest in you!]
[You have gained access to the system!]
She stared dumbfounded at that image for a minute, then another minute, then started cheering.
“YEEESS!” A few of her neighbors looked at her house in confusion but ignored her, not wanting to get into trouble.
‘Normally you don’t get access to anything related to the system until your of age, but I managed to skip that! Although its a slightly different wording then what I’ve heard its supposed to be, it shouldn’t matter! Not to mention a god taking interest in me, will I be accepted as a knight of the church?! I would be able to get good living and plenty of food for what I already do!’
Alexis was so excited, she didn’t read the new box until a few minutes of internal cheering and excitement.

[The God of Earth has sent a message to you!]
[Young one, do not show any church of my existence!
They will hunt you in the name of heresy,
and you will meet a fate worse than death.
I will grant you my last blessing, and hope you go far
with it.]
[The God of Earth has sent his blessings to you!]
[Please view it in your system]
That cut her excitement real short.
‘Heresy!? Will I be hunted by the church?! Calm down, calm down Alexis! Lets at least see my system.’
‘System’ She focused on the word in her mind, and a blue box came into view.

“Whaaa…” Alexis couldn’t help but let out notable confusion, and decided to sum up the things she did know. For starters, her general fighting ability SUCKED. Sure she could throw a few decent punches, but she couldn’t receive a punch at all without major damage. She remembered hearing from a trading partner that the average stat for an adult was approximately fifteen according to the kings ruling, and hers was terrible in comparison. Although it could be improved, it would take a long time to do so and forget about raising it to where her other two stats were, that would take an eternity and a day of being a sandbag. The only way to improve stats permanently were three methods: One, drink an extremely expensive elixir, Two, training a technique or learn a technique which was impossible without again, money, and; three, training normally with no guidance at all which will take an eternity and a day without a teacher which again cost money. ‘So I can complain all I want but I can’t do much about this stupid thing.’ Alexis sighed ‘Well, what about this ‘Soul’ stat? Or the ‘Inventor’ class? Or even the entire section labeled ‘Blueprints’? Well one day I will be able to get to the bottom of it but not today.’

Today for Alexis was ‘Fee’ day. For most of the slum residence with a status, they have to go to the closest representative spot and pay the protection fee for living in the slums, which is based on your class and rank. All the money goes towards the Rogue King, and that funds some of the Night Watchers, part of it then goes towards the city, and the rest into the kings pockets. Without the Night Watchers the slums would be mostly lawless, but the Rogue King, the greatest Thief in the slums, created them to let the slums be a viable choice of living for those who want to avoid the local lords watch or those who couldn’t afford the current tax, which is quite high for the low income members of the slums. The true beggars have to pay nothing but the rich have to pay quite a bit, albeit much lower than the cost of the local lords tax. The viscount that rules the area has tried to stop this form of mini governance many times, but every time has failed due to how dependent the slums are for any city for the poor class. The shear number of lower class men in the viscounts cities due to high tax has also not helped as the lord can’t send enough troops to deal with it without raising the taxes which will increase the amount of lower class men there are. The viscount is currently already low on funds due to the war going on between the Kropia Kingdom and the Empire, so he would rather let this local governance slide than potentially loose an entire city to the Empire.
She normally doesn’t have to pay the fee but she still has to report to the office anyway to confirm her age, so she put her stone in a dark corner of the room, and headed out.

An Un-Ideal Eternity
An Un-Ideal Eternity is about a man named Desmond, who is killed, revived, and then finds himself immortal in a post-apocalyptic society. Just because it’s a society doesn’t mean that either he or “they” have to be civilized. And just because a gentleman has become immortal does not mean that he has no dangers to be wary of. The good news is that he’s been afforded some very kind and very generous ministrations from his future-self. The bad news is that all those efforts might still not be enough, to allow our hero, to live in as untroubled and as un-tumultuous a manner as he’d prefer.
