《Living in my Own World!》Chapter 5 - School Life (Part 2)

I woke up with a start due to very loud noises. I looked towards the deafening sound's origin and spotted a white circle on the wall. I had no idea what this was, but I suppose that in time I would begin to understand more. To my right, I saw that Chad was already up and at his desk, writing something. He finished just as I had looked over to see what it was, folded it into an envelope, and sent it into the crack in the ceiling. I would've guessed that it was a letter to someone.
"Hey, you ready to go?" The magician asked me and I replied with a nod of my head.
"Yeah, let's get going. What do you have first?" I asked curiously. I didn't know whether the schedules were the same or not, so I had to find out this way.
"Oh, I have Science first, Spellcasting second, Break, Alchemy and Runes, Mathematics, World History, Lunch, Magical Control and Self-Improvement, World Basics and then Physical Education," he replied, "and all of my classes are one hour long. You?"
"Same thing here, except my class length varies; the magical ones like control are longer than the non-magical ones like history and physical education."
"Wow, special treatment huh?" Hitting me in the shoulder, we made our way towards Science. Our schedule is static on every day we have classes; no changes no matter the day.
In a giant academy like this one, it was pretty easy to get lost if you're not with the others. Can you guess what happened to us? Yeah, we got lost.
Do you need directions? Ruby asked. I forgot she was even here, so I got a bit startled. I'm never getting used to that.
Uh, yeah, directions would be nice. After requiring her to slow down her speaking several times, we made it to our class on time, barely.
"Before we begin, my name is Professor Hank, and I am a retired Arch Mage. For those of you that don't know, anyone with a potential of S or higher is considered an Arch Mage if they have also contributed to the country, say, in the Adventurer's Guild," everyone let out a gasp and had many questions, like "can you kill a Demon Bear?" and "what is your secret?" but he shushed them down before speaking again, "We're going to start now, so please listen."
He waited a minute for everyone to calm down, and then continued.
"Okay class, take out your textbook and go to page 5. We'll be talking about the basics of science. In this world, we don't use biology or stuff like that much because a lot of the time we have Magic to do that for us. But some people grow up to pursue the art of science and physics and forsake magic. But of course, science is interesting and so is magic, and that's why we're trying to find a way to use science to help us in our magical field. There are around a hundred million scientists around the world, working on several projects like how space and time function, what it is like outside of planets, etc, etc. We work on several things, like finding out the inner workings of our sun, the biology of a frog, you name it, we can do it with science. However, science, unlike magic, has a lot of limitations because of physics. We can't throw things at walls with our minds, now can we? No, we use magic for things like that, and that is why Magical Science is taken in your next year, and not right now."

He continued rambling on, supposedly trying to make both of them seem like good fits for jobs and all that, talking about what we're going to do in the next few classes and such. Our first unit was apparently on space and how we, as humans, function. It's a very interesting topic.
After an hour, class ended and we moved over to our next class.
"Alright, I hope you learned a few things today, and I'll see you tomorrow," the professor said, waving happily.
I moved over to Spellcasting pretty fast. It was the same thing as last class, introduction as Professor Reid, what we'll be doing, and the starting of the unit. In Spellcasting, we had to make a spell that could light up an area. I guessed this was for him to see what everyone's capable of and what he needs to work on them with.
A girl who had dark-like skin and a decent figure had trouble with this, like many others. She had so much magic that she couldn't control it. I overheard her whisper that she had an A potential to the professor when he asked. If A's are that good, then that S guy must be amazing.
Shrugging the thought off, I easily created a light with a perfect circle and the light source inside of the said circle. The light I created was almost blinding, so I tried removing mana from the light, and it dimmed greatly. Professor Reid walked over to me and clapped.
"Aura hidden, excellent control, and good execution. Well done, I applaud you. However, I can still see many errors in your spellcasting; providing an over-the-top amount of mana to the light, significant lack of imagination, and a few other minor errors. Of course, I can tell that you have a very high potential rank, so that is just how it will be for a while. Please try to limit your mana input, or you may die," Professor Reid warned casually. I looked at him and nodded. I did see that I lost a tiny amount of mana, so I didn't know what the big deal was, but I nodded anyway.
After processing everyone's capabilities, he clapped, signaling everyone to stop their spells. I obliged and listened intently. I also saw that Chad did a really good job on his light, so I decided to pat him on the back for his efforts later.
"First things first; always control the amount of mana you input into your spell. Put too much, and you may lose your life, but too little, and it won't do what you asked. Magic is very complicated this way, you see. The more mana your put in your spell, the stronger it will be. Too strong, and you may suffer from magic deprivation, the effects of this are simple; you die, or you lose your ability to use magic for a while, if not forever," he said in a dark tone. He wasn't wrong, after all, I had asked Ruby about this during my training. She said that if you get to no mana, you will die. If you get to very little mana, you will suffer for weeks.
"Spells are cast with four main things; intent, element, shape, and mana. Combining spells create more advanced spells that cost much more than they did previously. Your intent is your imagination, what it will look like and what it will do to the target when it lands. Mostly, people cannot set their intent because of how much it requires to do so. So, they are things called spellbooks, where you can learn spells with ease. Spellbooks come in ranks, and so do spells themselves; Level 1, the weakest, and Level 10, the strongest. Most people can only use up to Level 7, and even then, a genius or someone with high potential is needed to do even that. So, most people can only do Level 4 or 5, if that. There are even people who cannot use magic at all, we call them Regulars. Regulars are normal people, who can only use the most basic Level 1 spells because of their very low amount of mana."

He took a sip of water and then continued.
"We have only ever had two SSS humans born. One turned into a demon, and the other turned into a hero. The demon had tried casting a spell that was a Level 10 spell and failed because of his lack of sanity that was dwindling when he got the spell book for this Level 10 spell. The spell was named "Dragon's Rage," one of the strongest non-Godly spells out there. Godly spells are spells that surpass Level 10, and usually can only be used by gods. I say usually because the person that defeated this demon was Hero Edmund, and he used a Godly spell named "Divine Judgment," which, if the person is labeled 'evil' by the gods, will be struck down and sent to hell."
He paused again and took another sip.
"But of course, a Godly spell is nothing to scoff at. It killed our Hero in the process because he was not strong enough to wield the pure force of Divine Mana, which you will learn about in Magical Control and Self-Improvement. Anyway, continuing with this story, this Hero was of godly descent, when a human found a god and had a child with him. They were in love, and they lived happily ever after until his mother died. When his mother died, his father went on a rampage, trying to kill the King of the Gods and the Sun God, Solus. He failed and was exiled and murdered."
"Getting back on track, an element is what you use to create your magic with. Examples include fire magic, chaos magic, and light magic. All of these have their opposites, for example, fire magic is the opposite of water magic. Each opposite is able to damage the other severely, but usually, are able to be counted by the same magic, so the one with the most mana in that fight wins."
Again, he took another sip.
"There is certain magic that falls under the category of 'Personal Magic.' This magic is given only to one specific person, and are usually things like 'Teleport' at long distances and such. Some people have the same personal magic, but it is very rare to have another's personal magic, let alone personal magic itself. With spellcasting, you can use it to give you an advantage in a fight, outside, or in bed," at that, the students turned a bit red, seeing how some of them were children, "There has never been someone will more than three personal magic spells, and if there ever is, they will be the strongest personal alive."
"No one can use an element they haven't been given. It won't work. Many people have dual magic, very little have three magic affinities, but even fewer people have four or more."
The class went on for some more time, talking about other magic and things like that. He liked to ramble off, so when the bell rang, I was quite sad because I was very interested.
We had our break, with nothing much going on, so I just went to the next class early. I was very intrigued by this world, so I wanted to learn more. I stepped into the same room as all the others, a wooden floor, wooden and stone walls, and a wooden ceiling. Looking at the professor writing things on the board, I looked at it curiously.
"Miss?" I asked timidly. I wasn't very afraid, I was just worried she was going to be angry at me for coming early or something. I looked at the seemingly young lady in front of me at the chalkboard, and I walked forward and sat into one of the wooden desks.
"Hm? This is rather rare. A student coming in early? Hasn't happened in centuries!" The young-looking woman exclaimed, turning around the look at me, "Hello, I am Professor White, the teacher for your Alchemy and Runes class, and who are you?"
"Oh, uh, my name is Kas Ravenwood, a first-year student. Nice to meet you. I came in early to get learn more because I was interested in this subject. What are runes and what do they do?" I already knew what alchemy was from my father, but I had no clue about runes.
I could answer for you. Ruby said, startling me once more before I answered.
No, I want to learn it from her. I said apologetically.
"Runes are a way to engrave spells or effects into an object, like engraving 'Poison' onto a rock."
I nodded and she continued.
"Runes work together with enchanting. They are very similar to each other and are used for nearly the same purposes. Enchantments are used to add effects onto your clothing, tools, or anything like that, and runes are used to do something similar but on objects like rocks."
She paused, thinking.
"To do a rune, you must write the formula onto a piece of paper, and then add mana into it. For example, you add Wind element and put the symbol on a rock, with your mana giving it instructions to float, and then boom, it levitates until it doesn't have any mana. Enchantments do almost the same thing, but onto armor and tools. Like wind and fire onto a sword, and it can burn things with a button. Understand?"
"Yes I do, thank you," I said politely.
"I must finish this rune now, but you can watch."
And so I watched, I sat there until the class started and ended with nearly the same lesson but in more detail. The rune erased the board automatically after 1 hour of no use and can be disabled on command.
The next class arrived, mathematics, and we did basic things like addition and multiplication, which I learned from father as well as the training he gave me. The teacher of that class was Professor Bluerose, an expert at mathematics.
After about 30 minutes, we left the mathematics class, Professor Bluerose waving goodbye, and then world history came and went as well. In that class, the professor, named Professor Diamond, taught us about how they think the world was formed, stories and struggles of our past and things like that.
After that, we went to the cafeteria and I found Chad in a corner table. I walked over and sat down with him. The cafeteria was similar to the classes but had the same white material on the floor. I asked Ruby and she said it was marble.
"So, how are you liking it?" I asked Chad, my head resting on my chin, "I thought it was pretty interesting."
"Yeah, it's very interesting. I like the classes and the teachers, so I'm just processing everything at the moment," he replied with a hint of excitement in his voice, "In particular, I thought runes and enchantments were cool."
"I agree, it's really cool what you can do if you're strong enough. Also, I saw your performance in Spellcasting, good job. I'm so proud." I faked a cry and he groaned.
"You're sounding like my mother," he said before digging into his meal. I went over and got a sandwich, just like Chad and came back.
We ate in silence and, after the bell rang, we went to our next class. The sixth period was a bit of self-improvement, as the name states. We were just practicing our control, and she was telling us what to improve with our control. I thought Professor Hazel was very helpful and I managed to fix most of the errors in my magic with just that one class. She also said that potential is able to be improved, but it is very rare, as only one person in the entire world had ever been able to do it. This person went from D to SS in a year and went on to become a great adventurer. This hero also killed an Elder Dragon as well. He died, however, due to the injuries the dragon gave him.
After finishing the class and being confident with myself on my improvement, I went to World Basics, where they said that we'll be learning the basics of the world, like the kingdoms, kings, and such. Also, we will apparently be learning the language better; doing spelling and other basics, taught by Professor Gray
But in the final class, we suffered, a lot. By suffering, I mean we had to do some of the most excruciating exercises in existence. I felt like my muscles were going to die. The gym was not small at all and it had a decent floor for these activities, with the normal walls and roof as always, with lights hanging from the roof. I really think that Professor Jane had a hatred deep inside of himself for us.
Exhausted, I went back to my dorm and I slept like a rock. That is, until tomorrow, where I felt the same pain and really felt like staying in my dorm the next day. But of course, I didn't.

Dark Lands: The Exile and the Prince
A short time has passed since the siege on Ruined Home has been lifted and as the survivors of the battered encampment slowly begin to rebuild their new home, Aurelius has returned from a failed troll hunt. Yet despite the battered prince’s failures, he has set into motion a series of events that will forever change his life. Meanwhile, Iskra has found herself at the helm of a far more favorable position and begins to forge a path that will lead her towards the first steps of a long road of revenge. Author’s Note: This is the direct sequel to the first Dark Lands story and as time goes on I will update the synopsis to help bring further detail about the story. For now however, I hope you all enjoy what is about to be written. Eight Years Arc: Eight Years have passed since Aurelius and Iskra have first met one another, and a lot has changed since then. The vast majority of Aurelius’ family has been slaughtered by the hands of none other than his oldest brother, a man that the golden haired prince had spent the past several years to hunt down and kill all in the name of vengeance. Upon his return, the kin-slaying prince has found that some things have changed during his absence. Iskra, his first wife and love of his life, has proclaimed that she no longer cares about the events that have been unfolding in her former homeland for the last several years and states that she is solely focused on raising her children. Yet it is through learning that the High Elves have taken a keen interest in the once magically-absent lands of Ranislava that Aurelius decides that action must be taken and thus he journeys south to learn more about what his distant kin are up to in such a backwater region of the world. Who he will meet and what he will do will turn the tides of fate, but in whose favor is something that only the Gods will know. (The Eight Years arc is something that was designed to be written in a way where people don't have to feel the need to go back to the very beginning of the Dark Lands story in order to know what is going on or who the characters are.)
