《Must I Go Out to Survive This?》Chapter 7 - Camp

It was a rather chilly afternoon. The trees are infested with birds which are looking for a place to rest from their flight.
Under the branches they were resting on, there were dozens of zombies trying to climb up. They keep trying, but to no avail. After all, zombies are creatures that have lost their normal mind.
Someone passed the road near the tree was located. Being at a fork in the main road, the tree was eventually abandoned by the birds followed by the zombies below.
"This is so bad!"
The person running was silent for a while. He was somewhat dumbfounded by the current situation.
It was a scene where there were hundreds of zombies moving together on the other side of the road. The other side of the road which is separated by a barricade.
"What really happened?"
Tanaka asked. However, that question absolutely does not require an answer from anyone else. Obviously because no one else was around.
Tanaka saw something like a headless human corpse lying around. It was a very unpleasant sight as he walked past the sides of the car.
The corpse could be said to be the corpse of an ordinary human which seemed to have been torn apart by zombies. However, the zombies left them so that the rest of their body parts were still clearly visible.
"I'll be passing through here less often!"
Tanaka decided. He was currently on his jog and ran into something that made him feel bad.
Compared to the road leading to the minimarket where Tanaka usually buys food, the road he is currently traveling is more severe. This can be seen from many factors.
On the road that is passed, there are more cars that are damaged and destroyed due to colliding with each other than the road to the minimarket. This is because the traffic in this area is denser.
Human corpses do not turn into zombies lying in many places. This is because their heads have been crushed or because their bodies are too separated. It's a note for Tanaka because there is no information like this on the internet.
Tanaka looked to the left, it was a residential section. If Tanaka entered the small streets there, maybe he could reach the back side of his boarding house.
However, that was not Tanaka's goal. Currently the target is to jog around the city area.
Tanaka continued his jog. Moments later he ran. Then he ran faster. Faster and faster until finally Tanaka set a new speed record.
......
...
With no rest at all, Tanaka managed to cover about fifteen kilometers by running.
"Crazy stamina!"
Tanaka's impression of her body. He never thought that a body which could not withstand a hundred meter sprint now can endure a fifteen kilometer sprint without rest.
Well, saying that he was running without a break is also a bit imprecise. Actually Tanaka entered several shops to pick up some items in case he needed it.
Racket, a cell phone, tools and fruit. In a nutshell, that was the thing that Tanaka had taken to put in his room.
For rackets and fruit, he brings more for his neighbour, Yuki. Tanaka is a very considerate person.
Now Tanaka arrived at an area that was starting to be dominated by shops. In front of him was a truck which was still in good condition. Even the key is still in there.
To turn it on, Tanaka only needs fuel and maybe a replacement battery. Tanaka's assumption, the battery may have died due to overheating. However, in fact the battery is still left a fifth of the initial condition.

There were many shops that Tanaka passed by. It is a shopping area which is another reason why there is more traffic. This explains why there were so many vehicles colliding at the previous T-junction.
“…But still, this is weird! Why did I who used to be so weak suddenly become super strong!”
Tanaka tried to feel curious again. However, returning to his usual habits, he couldn't reveal anything since there were no clear clues except for the word 'bless' which he read on a blog.
Tanaka could only accept that mysterious power without knowing what the consequences would be and what the price would be. For him, the most important thing right now was to devise a plan to survive.
Tanaka looked around while jogging. There were several things that caught Tanaka's attention.
In a shopping area, it was a crowded place occupied by zombies, but definitely worth the price to explore. There are so many things that Tanaka can take there.
Next is the gym which is on the main road south of the boarding house. It was a place that Tanaka felt was very suitable to be a training ground. At the boarding house, Tanaka could only do regular exercises which didn't make him tired at all.
There were many warehouses and food stores that he passed. This caught Tanaka's attention because most of the places had been ravaged by zombies. This means that current food sources can only come from closed stores or in the form of packaging that is still sterile from zombie intervention.
Material depot on the same side of the road as the gym. He planned that place as a place to supply building materials to increase the protection of the walls of the boarding house. For Tanaka, the boarding house is still too easy for zombies to break into, as evidenced by the low fence at the front and the previous incident.
There is also a police station near the hotel which is most likely empty and abandoned. Tanaka had checked the place for a while and it was already empty without any weapons. There were only bullet marks on the wall and bullet casings on the ground.
"School area huh..."
Tanaka thought of a place near the shopping area. School X which in it there are approximately a thousand zombies in it. Tanaka thought about what he should do with the large building.
It could actually be a good place to make a base since there were quite a lot of features and a large area of land. However, the effort required to make it like that is definitely not an easy thing.
The thing that Tanaka was grateful for was the fact that the existence of the villain that Yuki had said was true. Most likely the corpses that Tanaka passed by earlier were villains who died either from bullets or became one with zombies.
"That's a bit of a relief,"
Tanaka stepped onto the second floor. Now he was in front of the door of his neighbor's room, Yuki.
It was night or rather evening because the sun was still a little visible. Tanaka knocked on Yuki's door.
“… It's me, your neighbor Tanaka!”
Tanaka explained towards the front door which either there was someone behind it or not.
Tanaka waited for a while. No answer.
Thinking that there was a possibility that Yuki was resting, Tanaka was about to go back to his room instead.
“Ah, sorry to keep you waiting!”
Tanaka stopped his advance and took two steps back. Now he was in front of Yuki's door again.

The door to the room opened. Seen a little chubby-cheeked girl showing her face from between the open door.
Tanaka smelled a peculiar smell which was new to him. Somehow Tanaka liked the smell.
"Here, I have some stuff for you. I picked it up while jogging. I hope you like it!"
Tanaka said while holding up the plastic bag and racket in his hand.
"Ah, what a hassle. I'll gladly accept it. Thank you, Tanaka-san!"
Yuki said while receiving the object that Tanaka was pointing at.
"By the way, if you run out of noodles or food, just go to my room. You can take my supplies!"
Tanaka told Yuki. The girl was a little surprised to hear that.
Yuki's hand moved back. She was now moving like a shy girl.
"Ugh, I'm very grateful for that Tanaka-san. You're so kind!"
Tanaka who heard it felt very light in his feelings. He rarely gets compliments, whether from acquaintances, friends or even coworkers. This made Tanaka's stress disappear for a moment.
"Hehe thank you!"
Such is the interaction between a lonely girl Yuki and the hikikomori man Tanaka. Both felt like they had a new experience from a new person.
Tanaka smiled back and Yuki also followed suit. For a while they were silent with their constant smiles.
Tanaka, who felt that he was disturbing Yuki's sleep, now took the initiative to end their interaction.
"Well, it's getting late now. I think we'll go back to our respective places,"
Tanaka started.
"Yeah, thanks for the stuff!"
Yuki replied with another thank you.
"Yup, I'm back first. Bye!"
Tanaka then left in front of Yuki's door. Yuki closed the door of the room slowly while smiling slightly at Tanaka in between before the door closed completely.
Now Tanaka is in his own room. Alone in the darkness with the light faintly emerging from the streetlight outside the window.
"Luckily the electricity is still working,"
said thanks Tanaka saw that. Without electricity, Tanaka would not be able to get information. Without that too, Tanaka couldn't do anything. He depends on electricity like everyone else in general.
"Because of the electricity, I can see this DVD!"
Tanaka took out a DVD cassette from his plastic bag. It was an object which should not be shown in front of a small child.
DVD cassette containing pornographic videos.
Tanaka does his night activities. The private activities of a hikikomori in a dimly lit room.
......
...
"Hey, isn't it still three in the morning?"
The hikikomori man who had just woken up from his slumber muttered questioningly towards the void. He was looking at his dimly lit cell phone. It was true that she woke up at three in the morning based on the time the phone showed.
A very short rest period for someone who has not slept for three days in a row.
"I only slept for three hours!"
Tanaka called out a little. The hikikomori felt strange since normally he needed to sleep for six hours a day. Plus, he had stayed up all night for three days. That means he needs about a day to rest.
"And surprisingly I feel so fit!"
Tanaka exclaimed rather softly as he tried to move his body.
"Where is my tiredness when I wake up?"
Tanaka asked. Tanaka's eyes blinked twice.
"Where's the feeling like I'm going to die as soon as I set foot?"
Tanaka asked again as he put his feet on the floor. Four times Tanaka's eyes blinked.
"Where the feeling of being fed up with a boring life... Oh, still there,"
said Tanaka. He is now fully awake.
Tanaka woke up early even in the realm of diligent people. This is something that is not planned.
Tanaka had a plan to grab a lot of food from the supermarket after waking up. He also intended to pick up a truck that seemed to be still functioning on a street full of corpses yesterday.
However, since he woke up too early, he was confused whether to do it or not.
"It's cold, but I don't feel like freezing!"
Tanaka said quietly. Cold air is a normal thing at a time like that.
Tanaka suddenly thought of something. It was the idea to try out the gym which he met yesterday.
At first glance, the place looks empty. However, Tanaka knew that there was still a possibility that zombies would settle there.
Tanaka came out of the room. Go to where the gym is.
"Why does it feel so comfortable outside?"
Currently Tanaka was outside, or rather in front of the boarding gate. He felt very comfortable being outside for some reason.
"Could it be due to less pollution?"
thought Tanaka trying to guess. That was the only thing that could explain why every time Tanaka breathed, he felt better.
...
Tanaka arrives at the gym. There he saw a large hole on the side of the wall. The hole was at least two and a half meters high with a diameter of about two meters.
"I'm sure there are mutants around here!"
Tanaka said. He had never seen a wall that was so heavily hollowed out like that. The ground around him wasn't damaged either, which meant it wasn't caused by a crash.
The only possibility that could happen was a mutant or some other unknown possibility.
Inside the gym, there were quite a number of zombie corpses and human remains. Most likely there used to be a group that lived here and fought zombies.
"Well, this one really needs to be cleaned up!"
Tanaka said in response to the gore scene in front of him. The number is more or less the same as the one Tanaka slaughtered yesterday at the boarding house.
Tanaka started cleaning up and tidying up some places.
......
...
“It really is clean now!”
After some time, Tanaka finished cleaning the gym. Although not very clean, the place was at least much better than it was a moment ago.
The corpses of the zombies were taken out and piled beside the gym, in the alley between the other buildings.
It was 04:21 AM. Tanaka tries to choose a gym equipment for him to train.
"Now, which one do I choose?"
Tanaka hesitated which one to choose. There is a treadmill, ABS crunch machine, static bicyle, cable machine and barbell. Quite a lot of choices for beginners like Tanaka.
After a while, Tanaka decided to just warm up first like he did yesterday. He also tried several tools such as a cable machine that was used to measure the weight he could lift.
Five hundred kilograms was the maximum weight Tanaka could lift based on the device.
Tanaka practiced with other tools and more.
At 06:30 in the morning, Tanaka rested and relaxed for a while in front of the gym. He drew up a task schedule for the items he needed.
First is the fridge. Tanaka needs it to store food in the boarding house. He planned to visit the electronics store in the shopping area after this.
With his current strength, Tanaka was sure he could carry the fridge to the boarding house. At least the weight of the fridge is not more than a hundred kilograms.
After picking up the fridge, Tanaka planned to try bringing in lots of food from convenience stores and other stores. This is a basic need for humans to survive in addition to shelter and equipment for survival.
"Yosh, let's do it!"
Tanaka rose from his reclining position. He headed to the shop.
......
...
Someone is pushing a cart. As usual, it was Tanaka who walked past the swarms of zombies as if nothing had happened.
The hikikomori man found the cart near the local market. A cart usually used by a delivery person to carry goods to the store area which passes through a narrow road where trucks cannot pass.
The cart that was being pushed already had some stuffing. The most important item is a large fridge. The rest of the space is used by Tanaka to carry other items such as computer parts, water heaters, welding equipment and electronic room cleaners.
All of these things were taken by Tanaka for the sake of important tools in the boarding house.
"This really is luck!"
Said Tanaka in response to the occurence when he found this cart. He didn't expect to be able to carry more stuff. Now he doesn't need something like a noisy basket anymore.
Tanaka continued to carry the cart by avoiding obstacles such as broken cars on the road. He has now arrived near his boarding house.
“Oh, it's you Tanaka-san. I thought where were you going, it turned out… Wao!”
Yuki suddenly stood in front of the boarding gate. Tanaka was a bit taken aback, but he immediately realized who it was.
"Yo Yuki, I brought some things!"
Said Tanaka. He then entered the boarding house with Yuki who seemed to be welcoming him.
“Tanaka-san, isn't this a big refrigerator… And this, computer equipment that I don't know how to assemble… And this is a vacuum cleaner!”
Yuki looked at the items that Tanaka was carrying one by one. She was curious because it was the first time she'd seen someone carry that much electronics to have.
In short, Yuki also wanted to get a share. However, she tried to hold back her unreasonable request. She had thought that Tanaka had fought so hard to get hold of the items, so it would be rude of her to suddenly ask. She misunderstood it.
"Shhh, calm down. The zombies will hear you later!”
"Oh, sorry!"
Tanaka responded to Yuki who raised his voice in the last sentence. Tanaka himself was happy that the things he brought could make his neighbors happy.
The two of them then moved the items and divided them as needed. Tanaka obviously needs to get that big fridge and welding equipment. The rest can be taken by Yuki.
The two of them joked for a while with the acquired equipment. Tanaka had something on his mind.
It's a camp.
A camp is a group of survivors who live in an area for a long period of time. The camp is the first step for survivors to reshape human civilization.
"...Hey Yuki,"
Tanaka called.
"Yes?"
Yuki turned and answered the call.
"Would you like to set up camp with me?"
Tanaka asked for something. That was the thing that had been on Tanaka's mind all along.
Yuki was surprised to hear that. Making a camp meant the same as uniting the two of them. There will be new rules and lots of new things to do.
"Of course,"
Yuki answered happily.
Even though Yuki herself is still afraid to be part of a group. However, if the person is like Tanaka, Yuki prefers to accept the choice.
"Good then. We have shelter, food supplies and members. What do you think our camp is called?"
"Ummm... Is 'Nebula' a good word?"
Yuki thought of something cool for her. Nebula or collection of dust-gas in space. They unite into big and sometimes form something beautiful. That's what Yuki thought, a camp that was something made up of shards of hope that formed something beautiful.
"Hey, that's really good. I didn't even think of such a thing,"
Tanaka replied. Yuki was happy to hear Tanaka's reply.
"By the way, let's add 'Fire' in front of it, okay. To make it sound cooler!"
Tanaka added. Yuki who heard it became a bit confused. To her, the Nebula coupled with the fire was a bit strange. However, since it was Tanaka's words, she tried to just accept it.
"Okay, that sounds cool. That means our Camp is called 'Fire-Nebula Camp', right?"
"Nice. That's great!"
Thus, the Fire-Nebula Camp was born with two members. Actually there are a few things that are lacking for this Fire-Nebula Camp to be called an official camp.
The first is the acknowledgment of other camps. Second is the expertise of the camp. Third is territory.
However, Tanaka and Yuki didn't care about that kind of thing. Their goal in setting up a camp is simply to survive and continue to survive.
It was also not forbidden to call such a group a camp.
