《A Vampire's Complications》Chapter Thirteen

With the large number of those that had lost their lives, the tower held a public memorial service. It was open to anyone who wanted to pay respect because some of the victims weren't part of the Seadonna family. Donny was reckless with the latest attack and it caught a lot of attention. I was watching all about it on the news while sitting on the couch in my room.
Derik sat in a near by chair and watched with me. He was the only one available at the moment. Ashley was busy comforting Ricky because he was blaming himself. Amanda and Mike were busy putting their children to rest. Just the thought of that broke my heart and I wished that I could do something to take that pain away. No parent should have to lose a child in a tragic way. David was missing but he was most likely helping find those responsible for the attack.
The TV suddenly turned off, making me look at Derik.
"Enough of that for today," he said as he got up and headed for the small kitchen attached to my room. I didn't bother to follow him, instead I stayed on the couch.
It had been three days since the attack had happened and I've only seen Ashley once since then. We were both just passing each other in the hall. I had used the opportunity to see how Ricky was doing and she explained that with every death it takes a bigger toll on him. Which makes me feel sorry for him because he didn't ask to be the leader of this family.
Ashley then gave me some information that I was surprised to hear. I guess she had thanked Ricky at some point for sending Derik to protect us. She told me that when she did, he ended up giving her a confused look. Saying that he never sent Derik to go protect us. In fact, he never sent anyone to protect us. So that had both me and Ashley wonder how Derik knew enough about the attack to protect us.
As if he knew that he crossed my mind, Derik came up to me and handed me a small bowl of ice cream, "You should eat more so that the twins don't suffer," he mentioned.

I couldn't help but let out a small chuckle, "That is if they let me eat. I thought morning sickness was only supposed to last during the first three months. Not well into the sixth month."
Stretching out on the couch, I grabbed the plate and felt my stomach turn. The smell of food filled my nose as I tried to see what he gave me. It was nothing special, just a cheese sandwich with pickles and mustard.
"Don't like it?" I heard Derik ask as he ate his own sandwich.
"It's not that," I told him honestly, "But just looking at this sandwich is making my stomach turn. I'm afraid if I eat it, the twins will reject it."
He let out a small chuckle, "What do they let you eat?"
"Things that don't have a strong smell to them. Apparently cheese and mustard have a strong smell," I answered.
"Apparently," he said as he placed his plate on the coffee table. He then got up from where he was sitting and headed back to the little kitchen, "I'll make you something different."
I was pretty grateful that he was trying. But the whole idea that he knew about the shooting without anyone telling him still bugged me a little bit. It was something I had to ask him about, "Hey Derik?"
"Yeah?" he responded.
"About what happened during the shooting, Ricky doesn't remember giving orders to protect me and Ashley," I said straight out. Derik came out of the kitchen slowly, holding a bowl of sliced pears. The look on his face showed hesitance. Like he was hiding something, "Care to explain to me why Ricky doesn't remember when he apparently sent you?"
Derik let out a sigh as he placed the bowl in front of me with a fork. He then took the sandwich he had given me and returned to his seat. He then ran a hand through his short hair before finally answering, "I appreciate you asking me about it before assuming something and you are right. Ricky didn't send me."
"Then why did you lie?" I asked him.
With another heavy sigh, he sat back. Still holding the plate with the sandwich, "Because I ran off when I should have helped. I knew Ashley would scold me for abandoning my post so I just said that Ricky ordered me to protect you guys."

I made a mental note to myself to explain the situation to Ashley later. That way there would be no misunderstanding between the two of them. Ashley was the one family member of the Seadonna family that I was closest to. I didn't want to see any tension between her and Derik since they were the only two that I actually got along with.
The ringing of the phone in my room broke the silence. Making me get up to go answer it in the small kitchen. I had somehow lost my cell phone at some point during the past three days and couldn't seem to find it. The thought of having one again sounded like heaven to me as I answered the phone.
"Hello?" I said.
"Thank God you are okay," came Jake's voice on the other line, "Jack kept telling me that you were safe, but I just had to know for myself. Did you know that they won't even let me enter the tower until the investigation is over with?"
"Why didn't you say you were going to the memorial?" I asked him.
"The memorial isn't at the tower. It's being held at a church a few blocks from it and is just as heavily guarded," he answered, "If you ask me, I think they are going a little overboard."
Just hearing his complaints made me feel better. Even if he really had no reason to complain. I could even hear Jordan in the background complaining just as much to whoever he was talking to. But Jordan wasn't complaining about the shooting and heavily guarded church. Instead he was complaining about Jake's complaining. Which put an even bigger smile on my face.
"How much have you been driving Jordan up the walls with all of this complaining?" I just had to ask.
"He'll live," Jake answered.
"But you might not," I joked.
He let out a gasp, "How dare you think that my boyfriend would have the nerve to kill me? He loves me very much. Thank you."
I let out a small giggle. It felt so normal to be talking to Jake again, but I did miss seeing his face as well. Making me wonder how long it would be before they would start to let him back into the tower.
"Has Jack visited you yet? I told him that since I'm not there he has to take my place," Jake informed me.
"No. He hasn't been around. Probably busy with all that has happened along with David," I told him.
"Shouldn't Derik be busy along with them instead of hanging around you all of the time?" Jake suddenly said. Making me wonder how he knew about Derik being in my room.
"I'm not sure how you know about that, but Derik is busy making sure me and the kids are safe from harm," I answered. Derik let out a small chuckle to let me know he overheard me.
"Tell Jake I said 'hi'," he shouted from the background.
"I still don't know how he got you pregnant," Jake said with disgust. I wanted to give him a smart remark but the sound of him being slapped and him whining 'ow' came over from the other line. Making me laugh, "Leah, I have to go. Jordan needs to be taught a lesson."
"I don't want to know," I suddenly say ready to hang up the phone because I had a feeling things were going to get uncomfortable for me to hear, "I'll talk to you later."
Hanging up the phone I turned to see Derik leaning in the doorway of the kitchen. A small smile on his lips, making me wonder how long he was there for. But I didn't get a chance to ask him as my phone rang once again. Making me roll my eyes as I turned to answer it.
Feeling very popular, I answered, "Thank you for calling Leah's room, this is Leah speaking. How can I help you?"
"I have some good news and some bad news," came David's voice over the line.
"What's the good news?" I asked. Unsure what to think.
"Your new cell phone just arrived," he reported.
"And the bad news?" I was scared to hear the answer.
"So did a threatening letter involving your father," David informed me, "Donny wants you to meet with him or he will kill your father."
