《A Vampire's Complications》Chapter Seven

Nana didn't live in Seadonna Tower. Instead she lived in a small townhouse on the outskirts of the city. Ashley drove us to the location as she talked to me to prepare me for my first meeting with who everyone considers their grandmother. I was feeling a little nervous because I was pretty much picturing a walking skeleton at this point. Ashley really wasn't telling me what Nana looked like other than that she could pass as anyone's grandmother.

"Why does she live so far from Sedonna Tower?" I asked her as we came to a stop in front of a row of townhouses. I wasn't even sure which one was the one that Nana lived in.

"It's neutral ground between the two families," she answered, "Her wishes because she wasn't going to turn any of the family's children away when they needed guidance."

Even if I understood the reasoning, it still terrified me that we might run into someone from the Shidonna family. There really was no telling how much respect they had for the old woman inside the townhouse. From what I experienced, they would probably start a fight and hurt someone with any chance they had.

Ashley and I climbed out of her car and headed up the front steps towards the house. The front door opened and someone with red eyes exited the building. They didn't even pay attention to us as they walked past us and then down the street. I couldn't help but look after them in confusion.

"Leah, are you coming?" I heard Ashley ask. I didn't realize that I had stopped and she continued to catch the door before it closed. Quickly I ran up the rest of the stairs and entered the building with her.

The place was dark inside. All of the curtains were closed and a faint smell of incense filled the air. As we walked into the living room on the left, a woman dressed as a nurse walked up to us and greeted us. Her mouth was covered by a medical mask, but I could tell by the crinkling of her eyes that she was smiling.

"Welcome Leah. We've been expecting you," the nurse greeted and then motioned with her head to have us follow her further into the house.

We walked through the living room and through an archway into a small dated kitchen. The nurse then continued to lead us outside the back door onto a small patio. The patio was surrounded by different types of flowers, but I was drawn to the rose bush. It sat next to a rocking chair where an old woman sat.

Ashley stood in front of the woman with a kind smile and announced our arrival, "Hello Nana. Leah and I came to visit you."

"Hello Dear. Tell Leah that it is okay to come admire the rose bush. I had it put there so I can get a good look at her," the old woman said. This whole trip was taking me by surprise.

The old woman in front of me wasn't what I had imagined. I was expecting someone that was so old that she was almost a skeleton. But the more I looked at this old woman the more she looked like she was just well into her eighties. She looked healthy and alert. The only thing wrong that I could notice that was wrong with her was the milkiness of her eyes. Nana was clearly blind.

Slowly, I shuffled up to her. Unsure of what was going to happen, but my eyes refused to leave the sight of the old woman. Even if I really did want to admire the rose bush next to her. There was just something about the old woman that made me nervous and not knowing what that was, scared me.

"Everyone can leave us alone. Leah will come find you Ashley when I am done talking to her," Nana ordered. No one asked any questions as they followed what was instructed. Leaving me alone with her on the back patio. Unsure what to do, I just stood there like an idiot, "You can pull up one of the other chairs so you can sit next to me. I won't bite."

Thinking it was best to not argue with her, I grabbed the closest chair and placed in next to her. Keeping the rose bush between us. For some reason I saw it as a barrier that could protect me.

Nana let out a sigh as she stared out in front of her. I was pretty sure she wasn't going to say anything but then I remembered that she wanted to talk to me, "I would like to first apologize for how my family seems to take things," she began, "They took what I said out of context. Putting a lot of pressure on you."

"What are you talking about?" I heard myself ask.

"I never said that you would end the war. I only said that you could by saving Donny from himself," she explained, "But you can't mess with free will even if those dang kids think you can. There is no guarantee that Donny will change and there is no telling if one of his followers will take his place when he falls."

"So I'm not supposed to save the whole family from this war?" I said a little surprised and still a little relieved.

She shook her head, "You are only supposed to save Donny from himself. Bring the brothers back together. Make them understand each other." she paused only long enough to have her milky gray eyes look at me directly. Chilling me to the bone, "Donny grew up being prepared to become a king while Ricky was given the freedom he wasn't allowed. Jealousy took over and made his heart dark, making him lose everything. Only you can make Donny see things differently."

"How am I supposed to do that?" I asked her.

Nana responded, "Donny isn't completely heartless. He just feels like no one has ever cared about him other than the family he has created. His jealousy has him blinded to the love his brother has for him. Make him see and he just might be able to change."

"I have one more question," I mentioned to her.

She returned to look straight ahead as she answered, "You are looking for guidance with the soulmate situation. I know he is a lot to handle and tends to hover. David lost the one person who he loved to the enemy, he is just scared that it will happen again."

"What about Derik?" I heard myself ask Nana.

She suddenly got a serious tone as she answered, "What you choose to do is up to you. No one can make those choices for you. But you should know that things may have changed after that incident back in your hometown. Just be cautious on who you trust, it could be your downfall."
