《Chronicles of Rathia - The Era of Blood》Chapter Twenty-Two - Branch Master

Chelsey had a worried expression while asking “What happened in there? Not only will the guild not tell us but they also said not to tell anyone that you were here.”. Hearing her words, I then look at the bed, trying to process everything that just happened.
Several minutes of silence pass before Chelsey then mentions “If you don’t want to say, that’s okay.”.
I shook her head to her words, if she was taking care of me over seven days, I felt like she had a right to know. “He did know me.” I tell her.
Her eyes slightly widen “So does that mean-”.
I shook my head before she could finish “The reason he wanted to see me was because he wanted to get rid of whoever dealt with the bandits.”. “It seemed like he knew me and near the end of the conversation, he had guards come in and attempt to detain me.” I then looked towards my sword “Things got messy from there.”.
Chelsey was shocked as she heard what happened. “So you didn’t get to find out about your past?” she asked with a frown forming on her face.
Upon hearing her words, I raised my hand that I put the ring on and looked at the finger “I saw memories of a young boy.”.
Confused on what she was hearing, she then asked “What do you mean? Did you see your past?”.
“I don’t know if it was my past, it was a little boy that had black hair.” I answer her while I put my hand back down.
Chelsey then placed a finger upon her lip “That doesn’t seem right, you have white hair.”. I nod to her words. “What about a name? Did you hear a name?” Chelsey then asks.
I shook my head “No, whenever they said a name, I heard nothing.”.
“What did you see then, if you don’t mind me asking.” she urged me with a face full of curiosity.
With the memories I saw, I had nothing to hide, if anything maybe she knew about the places I saw. “There was an orphanage in a place that had dirty roads and houses that looked half destroyed or really beaten up.” While I talked, I continued to think about the events that happened then. “There was also another place that had all different kinds of trinkets and books piled high everywhere.” After mentioning that place, I then remember the only name that I heard. I looked to Chelsey, while I asked “Do you know Marawa?”.
When she heard those words, she pondered for a moment “Hmm. If I remember correctly, that's near my home town which is straight east from here.”.
After hearing her answer, I knew where I wanted to head to next. I then changed the subject “What about you guys, how's Vaero doing?”.
“Vaero was able to move normally again about three days afterthe guild gave you to us.” She told me with a gentle smile before it turned into a look like she forgot something “Oh right! Vaero said he wanted to talk to you after you woke up, I’ll go quickly get him.”.
My eyes drifted to my sword after Chelsey quickly made her way out of the room, closing the door behind. As I look at it, I think about the guardsman that helped the boy escape. While thinking about it, I got upset since I wasn’t able to see anybody's face, I was only able to hear their voices. If I knew what they looked like, I could find out more about myself if I saw them.

I wasn’t in thought long before the door opened up and in came Chelsey and a now bandagless Vaero. The instant he came in, he walked up right beside the bed and bluntly asked “You can use magic now, can’t you.”.
Taken back by the sudden question, I shook my head “I don’t know.”.
“I don’t understand how but I can feel the presence of mana on you now.” Vaero tells me while furrowing his brow.
When Vaero mentioned it, I thought back to when I put the ring on and when I felt an invisible force start pouring into me. I then remember when the boy was in the room with the crystal ball. I then turned to Chelsey “If the boy really was me then I might be able to use magic.”.
Vaero then places his hand on his hilt while mentioning “For Chelsey’s safety, tell me how you are able to use magic now.”. “Depending on your answer, I’ll either let it go or else I’ll take you out with me.” He adds on.
Chelsey looked at him with a worried look “Vaero, please don’t be so rude.”.
I raise my hand to her while shaking my head “It’s okay Chelsey.”. I then peer towards Vaero “Serval Grue had a ring on him that let him use magic.”. “When I was forced to kill him, my body was drawn to the ring, beckoning me to put it on.”. “After I put it on, both my heart and the finger I had it on felt like there was something melting into it and shortly after is when I saw the memories of the young boy.” I tell them.
Vaero was uncertain about the details but he seemed content with the answer I gave and let go of the hilt. “The details seem a bit hard to follow but you didn’t give me the answer I hoped you didn’t say so I believe you.” He tells me, confusing me on what answer he thought I was going to say. “Anyways that's all I wanted to ask you. If you truly do have magic and don’t know how to use it, come to me when you're free later, I’ll help you out.” He tells me as he walks out the room.
I was confused with why it couldn’t be now while I turned my gaze to Chelsey. When she saw that, she helped clear the air “Oh right, I forgot to mention but the guild wanted to see you right after you woke up.”. “Oh and they said that you are to ask for Yolin.” She then adds.
I wondered if going to the guild was a good idea if they were the ones that found me in the room with Serval’s body. I pondered on it for several moments before thinking it would be best if I did since they wanted Chelsey to keep me hidden so there must have been a good reason for that.
My mind was made up and I began getting out of the bed, reaching for my blade. “Oh, you’re going right away?” Chelsey asks me. While nodding to her, she then adds “Well make sure you eat something soon since while you were out, it was so hard feeding you food.”.
I felt a little embarrassed that she had to feed me so then I told her “When I get back, we’ll get something to eat.”.
After she heard those words, she gave me a soft smile as she turned around. While she walked out the door she said one more thing “I’m happy you’re okay, be safe out there.”.

When she closed the door behind her, I grabbed my sword and placed it on my back. Once it was on my back, I felt safe and began making my way out of the room and inn. As I walked through the doors to outside, I saw the sun directly above me while I began making my way to the guild.
Along the walk to the guild, I felt a bit worried so I walked faster than normal. Once I made my way into the guild, I went straight to the counters on the left, happy to see Ilise still on the other side.
“Oh, Crim! Good afternoon, I haven’t seen you in a week. I thought you left town!” Surprised by her words, I only shake my head. “Well if you don’t want to say where you were then that's none of my business.” she says with a smile before changing the subject “So what brings you in today? Are you ready to talk about the promotion quest?”.
I shake my head “No, I was told to meet Yolin here.”.
Ilise’s eyes widen “Oh! The branch master is here to meet with you?!?”. “I was told someone will come in asking for him and for me to take them into one of the discussion rooms.” She then adds while walking towards the door on her side, disappearing behind it.
A moment after she came out of the door beside the counter “If you could follow me, Crim. I’ll take you to a room right away.”. I then started following behind her after she went inside first.
We walked down the hallway until we almost made it to the very end before she turned to the left, opening the last door on the left in the hallway and gesturing for me to enter in. Once I was inside, the room contained two couches and a short table in between, similar to the reception room in the castle. After I sit down Ilise then tells me before leaving “I’ll go get the Branch Master for you now.” and closed the door behind her.
I looked around the room, it was very plain and really only had the couches and table inside. It took a while before anyone was entering so I got lost in thought about what was going to happen. If what Ilise said was true and Yolin is the Branch Master, I guess I’m having to speak with someone of high status so I prepared myself.
More time passed before finally the door opened up, revealing an older looking man who had long hair, strung in a ponytail and a beard. He had his left eye closed that had a huge scar running down the middle of his eye. He wore a fancy black outfit that had red accents to it and he had two long swords strapped to his waist, one being longer than the other.
“I apologize about the wait, Sir. We had no idea when you would awake but I broke away from my meeting the instant little Ilise told me you were here.” He tells me while making his way over and sits down on the couch opposite of me.
“My name is Yolin and I am the branch manager of the guild here in Trennent and I would like to give an apology as well as a thanks from the recent things that just happened.” he tells me. I was surprised why he wanted to apologise but it was cleared up when he continued “First we would like to give a sincere apology for sending you to a place we didn’t know that was being controlled by a group called The True One.”. “And as well, we would like to give you our thanks for taking out one of their unknown leaders.” He then finishes with.
I didn’t really know what this group was but if they are bad enough that me killing the baron doesn’t make me an enemy to the whole place then I was curious to how they found out he was “How did you know that Serval was?”.
“We found some notes with a symbol of a black star on it addressing him from an unknown source about them sending bandits in his area and that if someone was to deal with bandits, he is to get rid of said person.” While he talked, the things that happened that night started to paint a better picture. “As well as that, he had the same symbol on his chest.” He then adds. “We have dealt with a few people from that group and they all have one thing in common which was the same symbol he had on him.”.
“After we confirmed that he was the enemy and you were a victim, we gave your unconscious body to the only people the guild knows you have a connection with and had them lay low in case any more people from that group were in the area.” After hearing him talk, I then understood what happened after I blacked out. “Also for now, no one in Trennent knows that the Baron is dead, if they did then chaos would be brought to this town.” He then quickly adds. “If there's anything the guild can do for you, we will give you our support.”.
Hearing those words, I instantly thought about Marawa “I need to go to Marawa but I have no idea how to exactly get there.”.
He began stroking his beard for a few moments before talking “Hmm… if you need to go to Marawa… ahh that could work.”. When he sees my confused face he then elaborates “Come back tomorrow and ask little Ilise to set up your promotion quest.”.
I still didn’t really understand what he was trying to tell me “What about Marawa?” I asked him.
“Don’t worry about that, things will make sense when you come back tomorrow, for now I have to set some things up.” He tells me while standing up. As he makes his way to the door, he tells me one more thing before leaving “With your current exploits, I have high expectations for you, Crim.”.
The room went silent as it was just me once more. I started to feel a hunger creep on me and made the decision to go back to the inn right away. After I left the guild and began walking towards the inn, I thought about the things that happened that night and was happy that things started making sense.

This was my entry for National Novel Writing Month, because why only write one series at a time? The more the merrier! (meanwhile, my keyboard bursts into flames...) I'm also the writer of The Last Science, an ongoing low-fantasy/speculative sci-fi series. If you're familiar with that, you know what to expect here: lots of character-focused drama and dialogue, not a whole lot of traditional action. However, I'm writing a bit differently than usual here, and in a very different structure, so there should be some surprises for returning readers. I hope you enjoy it! [Discord] — for those of you who want to hang out and chat. Cover art (fullsize): Path of Revelation, by taenaron (Tobias Roetsch), modified by Etzoli. Normally I like to do my own cover art from scratch, but I was in a rush for the contest. Might be replaced down the line if I get time. 8 146Right as Rage
Only 15 years have passed since the miscreant god, Villi, stole magic from the gods and gave it to mortals. In response the mortals seem to be doing their best to squander this gift. The Kingdom of Abrune regulates it, the church of the Sacred Hierarchies outright condemns it, but one 'wildman' from across the sea begins his journey after being cursed by it. Vakdragnar's curse manifests when he loses his temper. It has driven everyone he’s ever cared about away from him. Out of options and money, he travels to the city of Tirough and quickly finds himself on the wrong side of the law. He is persecuted despite his intentions to do good. How can you stand against evil if everyone you’re trying to protect thinks you’re the villain? And if this curse is truly a part of him now, what if they’re right? **************************************************************************************************** Right as Rage is a story I’ve been excited to write for some time now. I hope everyone is as excited to read it. This story is going to be told over several arcs, with each arc containing 7-12 chapters, and an interlude or two each. I plan on submitting new chapters once a week on Tuesday evenings.
