《The Intelligent Ogre (Dropped for remake)》Chapter 9 - 'Basic Creature Regeneration', 'Jakes Mental Breakdown', 'Motivation Medicine'
Jake started to learn the ‘basic creature regeneration’ first then learn ogre regeneration, then he was sucked into the grey space once again.
Jake then started learning the theory but paused mid-way. It seems to gain basic creature regeneration (will be named BCR from now on) would require him to be cut many times while trying to control his vital energy to try and heal the damage
Firstly, this was to make his body understand what to do when injured (otherwise this would not be a passive skill but rather active, which would distract Jake). Secondly, this will allow Jake to increase his recovery speed outside combat (if he concentrates Jake would recover faster). Lastly, this is just level 1 BCR, there is higher levels, and this will act as a foundation for learning the higher levels.
This didn’t sound very pleasant to Jake as nobody (at least he knows of) likes to be injured, even if it is for becoming stronger. After a small internal struggle, he decided to learn BCR, after all he learned pain tolerance, how much more painful could this be compared to that pain?
Also, Jake knows at some point he would have to learn it, after all there is ogre regeneration as well, better learn both regeneration skills before ‘his parents’ force him to learn it outside of the HCTS (which he doesn’t know ogres learn the skills, though Jake is sure it isn’t as good as the HCTS).
After Jake finished the theory, the words disappeared, and in its place a strange machine appeared. It had yellowish fluids inside and a lot of wires, connecters, and sharp looking needles.
As Jake read what the device should do during the theory, he couldn’t help but reconsider learning the skill.
This is because the device would trap him inside, while sticking in those needles inside his body, which would then heal put some fluid in his body. This fluid will first inject some type of destroying liquid, then after his body is somewhat destroyed (internally), it will inject a ‘vital energy stimulator liquid’ which helps the vital energy in his body become more active and easier to control.
Then Jake will have to use what he learned during the theory; to use the vital energy to heal his body in a specific way to gain the BCR skill.
Jake decided to stop reconsidering, he knew that if he stopped now, he would most likely never come back (at least not for a while).

After setting up the device according to the manual, Jake jumped into the device, and it activated. Jake felt the needles stab into him, he hated needles, but he couldn’t stop now.
Some cold fluid started pouring inside of him, at first nothing happened, but slowly he felt pain and it kept increasing. After it reached almost half the pain he endured, when learning the pain tolerance, the needles stopped pouring the liquid.
Then a few seconds later the needles started pouring in liquid again, though this time the liquid felt hot but comfortable. Though that also didn’t last long, Jake started to feel itchy, very itchy.
Knowing that he needs to control his vitality now, Jake tries ignoring the pain and itchiness before starting, which was quite difficult, it was easy ignoring the pain, but the itchiness was hard to ignore. After what felt like a while he finally could focus on ‘controlling’ his vital energy.
According to the theory, every living creature has vital energy. It is stored all over the body, but the ‘controllable vital energy’ is mostly in the blood due to multiple reasons. Though the main reasons are because of it being all over the body, and the body usually uses blood it heals its tissue.
To control vital energy, Jake must ‘will’ the vital energy to his cells, mainly macrophages, neutrophils, fibroblasts, and platelets to promote healing.
As Jake tries to control the vital energy, he fails multiple times, it felt like trying to hold an eel, the harder he tried grabbing onto it the faster it slipped away. After a while Jake tried the ‘soft approach’, he used his will to ‘guide’ the energy (by blocking other pathways) rather than control it forcefully.
While it worked it wasted too much vital energy, and Jake felt something was wrong, his vital energy was cut away from its normal route, which according to what he read will damage the body slowly (most of the time), and sometimes even permanently. Though Jake didn’t care about that, he knew that would happen, but what he cared about was why still didn’t get the skill.
It seemed that just guiding the vital energy wasn’t enough. This time Jake tried to guide the vital energy, while at the same time, control the vital energy to the parts of the cells that promote healing. After a while, his wounds started healing but faster than just guiding it.

Jake checked and it seemed he got the skill, but it wasn’t complete. It seemed that the passive skill would require more time to become a ‘passive’ rather than just an active. After a while the skill reached 50% completion, but he completely healed at this point.
Jake left the device than updated the device, he tried to return as fast as possible because he felt that if he took a break, he would make excuses and wouldn’t return to complete the BCR skill.
After reentering, Jake felt the pain again which took longer because Jake needed it to do more damage to himself before healing it. After a while, it stopped injecting the destructive liquid.
Though this time Jake had to regenerate without the ‘vital energy stimulator liquid’ because he obviously wouldn’t have this liquid on him outside. Though because he didn’t have the stimulator it took longer, but thankfully after a while he got the hang of it without the vitality stimulator.
After a while Jake started feeling that his body was healing, which after a while started slowing down. Jake checked what was going on and saw that he was ‘running out of vitality’. Thankfully, the machine started injecting some liquid, that replenished his vital energy very quickly, which then allowed Jake to continue regenerating his body.
Finally, after what felt like forever Jake felt something ‘click’. Checking the system, Jake saw that he gained the passive skill ‘basic creature regeneration’ level 1.
Then Jake left the grey space and returned to the white space.
Jake felt horrible, he lost his motivation greatly, does it take this much pain and loneliness just to become strong?
Loosing his motivation Jake felt that there was no meaning in his life. Magic while interesting, will it also lose meaning after a while? Thinking like this Jake broke down and starting crying. After a while, Jake’s mental stability skill dulled his negative emotions quite a bit, but even then, he felt uncomfortable.
(Author's note: Even with the mental stability skill, Jake will still feel negative emotions, and they will also affect him, but they will 'stabilize' which will reduce the burden. So, if Jake turns 'insane' the skill will stabilize his mentality to a level where he becomes 'cool headed', but Jake will also still have some 'insanity' that affects him.)
Jake waited for what felt like forever before coming to an idea, was there a skill passive or active to help him remove the loneliness or pain?
The system surprisingly told him, “Emotions are a part of you, even if you get rid or even dull them, they will one way or another affect you usually negatively.
Though if you can’t stand the loneliness and pain, you can take an ‘motivation medical pill’, which has been deemed the best action without affecting you mentally heavily.
This motivation injector will last your entire stay during the stay.
Keep in mind you will not be able to use this during the attribute trials Jake Flash.”
Hearing this Jake couldn’t believe it existed although according to the system it would still affect him. This made sense otherwise, but for now he was not motivated to even continue learning/training, this will come in handy until he gets his motivation back or wants to do things that are fun, like learning magic or learning something that would be fun.
After Jake decided, a round medical pill appeared in front of him. Jake then grabbed before eating it right away, after all what was the worst that could happen?
After waiting for a while Jake didn’t feel anything new, while he waited, he kept pacing back and forth, a habit he had in his past life while he waited for something.
Then just as Jake thought the medicine was a dud, he felt like doing something, in fact anything. Knowing this is the effect of the medicine Jake quickly checked how much time he had left in the HCTS, which was a bit less than four days.
Then Jake decided not to waste anymore time, or rather he felt that he couldn’t, he felt as though ‘something’ was forcing him to move and learn.
Jake then decided to learn the ogre regeneration, which would superimpose with the BCR.

2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
