《The Novel's Unifier》Chapter 12 - Family (1)

Danny couldn't move his body for only a short time. It must've been because of Arthur's concoction. Yet, he was pretending he couldn't move. Why?
Because of Arogel, who was brazenly staring at him. Even if Danny never had any poison injected, he doubted he could move.
'It's Arogel,' he kept thinking to himself, trying to stop himself from grinning like a madman. Arogel was basically his idol, until the writing went downhill. When it all seemed like the regular light novel that you could read anywhere. He had really wanted to quit reading it.
"You can move, can't you?" he asked, suddenly leaning forward. "Stop looking at me with that weird face."
Danny stopped hiding it, fully smiling now. "Ah, you found out," he said, going for a hug. Skilfully, Arogel dodged it.
"Who are you? Why act so confident about something you know nothing about?" Arogel pulled out a knife from nowhere, holding it against Danny's throat.
"C'mon, don't be like that. Why does everyone want my head?" Danny laughed, still unable to hide his happiness. He pushed it closer. "Alright, alright. Don't hurt me, ok? I'm Dan-" He stopped himself, coughing into his hand. "I'm August Reginald VI, a fan of yours."
Surely that didn't sound too weird, as he should have many fans already. He had a good face, though less than Danny's, with a compact build. As it was compacted, he was smaller than other people around him, but he was much stronger. Plus, his two eyes looked with such directness that most would be charmed. After they were scared, of course.
"Hmph. You're not lying," he said, leaning backwards. "Why are you already fine? And why do I feel no Mana from you?"
Danny laughed, brightly. He felt around his throat, feeling blood that had already scabbed over. It didn't really hurt. Instead, it felt almost pleasurable. Or maybe it was just the meeting that had him in such a great mood.

"Weren't you trying to act your age?" Danny responded, waving his questions away. "You know, for someone raised by a Human, you are not all that Human."
"Hey!" a voice said, coming from outside. "You're not allowed in there! Now, leave before I get the Principal!"
"Move out the way, woman, before I have your head cut off," responded a calm, almost bored, voice.
"Run," I muttered to Arogel, who was already moving. He jumped out the open window just before the door opened, showing a blond man. He wasn't that good looking, yet it could be said that he had a strong pressure. Danny didn't feel it, though. He wore a an outfit one would only find on a nobleman several centuries before the First Cataclysm. Danny nearly laughed at the figure. He looked ridiculous.
Yet he strode confidently, quickly, and with purpose in his every step. Not a single sound came from Danny's mouth. "You can't just come in here! The patient's still... sleeping..." The nurses voice came to a slow stop when she saw Danny, awake, smiling at her.
She started to blush, but quickly turned her head. "You were saying?" the man said, shooing her away. "Now, leave. It's family business, not something someone like you can interfere with."
The nurse gave up. "If you start a fight, I'll break your bones and let them heal on their own." 'That's the correct decision,' Danny thought to himself. She could do nothing to stop this, as he was shown to be fine. She left the room, though he had no doubt she was waiting right behind the door.
Danny's face soured at the appearance of this character. He had been ignoring his existence, but he knew him well. Too well, really, for what the Author must have intended.

"What do you want, brother of mine?" Danny asked, speaking with a false smile. It hurt to do it, but he couldn't show how he was feeling.
"Father dislikes what you've done," he said, with a serious face.
"So what? If he really cared, then he would have come here, wouldn't he? Oh, you wouldn't have anything to eat, would you?" It had been a while since Danny had eaten. Noticing his silence, he continued, "You don't? Well, that's just too bad, then."
"Father wants you to drop out. He'll take care of your financial needs for the rest of your life. He'll even refurnish your estate." The man, whose name Danny refused to even think of, was shaking.
Danny pretended to ponder. It would be a horrible idea to drop out, no matter what. "No thanks. Now, can I please have some food? I am really hungry."
He slammed his hand straight through the nearby table, splinters flying everywhere. "You always ignored Father's words. Look where that lead you."
"Hey! I said no fighting! Leave, or I really will!" The nurse held out her hand, shaking it violently.
"And you keep kissing Father's ass so hard you've left hickies. Now, could you please leave? I can't stand someone that can't think for themselves." He saw the man flicker.
His fist was stopped right in front of his face, stopped by the nurse. It seemed she had veins bulging from her forehead. "I. Said. No. Fighting." She punched the man so hard that he was knocked out. "And you, kid. You could've just left it. Why continue? What if I wasn't here?"
Danny laughed at the Nurse's words. "It's true, I would've been screwed without you. But, we both know he was only scaring me. Do you have any food?" Danny's stomach rumbled, loudly. It almost felt that the building was shaking.
The Nurse sighed. "Here, an apple. That's all I have. Get going; lunch is starting soon."
"The I'll just wait here," Danny said, biting the apple. His teeth sheared through it, cleanly. There was a vibration from the phone in his pocket. He had mostly forgotten about it.
[3 new messages:

The corpse of Boss Monster, Ironskin (Mature) has been fully digested.
Eating Apple (Garbage). No Stats gained.]
Danny started humming to himself, as he read through the three notifications.
[Eating the corpse of Boss monster, Ironskin (Mature), has given the temporary Stat Boosts +4 Stamina, +4.325 Strength, +3.866 Agility, +2 Perception, Intelligence already higher, Magic Power cannot be contained, Intelligence already higher, Perseverance already higher, Charm already higher.]
After reading through the first one, he realised it didn't really matter. It was only temporary. He hoped the next would be better.
[The corpse of Boss Monster, Ironskin (Mature) has been fully digested. Stats will be permanently boosted by +0.519 Stamina, +0.561 Strength, +0.502 Agility, +0.259 Perception.]
Those seemed to be big numbers, considering Danny's already low stats. But the biggest problem was the poison. It was still flowing through his veins, so he couldn't do anything else. Now, the last message was meaningless. What was even the point of showing it?

Sufficiently Advanced
A Novella about magic vs aliens vs science. It's a raucous, campy sci-fi read involving humans gaining magic, a possibly pizza-hating alien empire, the decapitation of the US Federal Government, eldritch abominations, lesbian space witches and some medium-hard science.I wouldn't say it's not serious, but I wouldn't say it's serious. Eh, it's not serious. Wait... it's getting serious.

In Pursuit of Bark's Finest
On the frontiers of transhumanity’s expansion into the galaxy thousands of light years from the light of Sol, things can get rather chaotic. There are countless millions of nascent interstellar nations securing their interests, pirate ships prospering off plunder and deniable mercenary work, dissidents setting up their own civilizations, and other groups all trying to push an agenda. When these groups crash into each other, the results can become extremely messy and convoluted. Recently, a frontier nation calling itself the Red Star Union has found itself at the focal point of one such complication. A freighter under their protection has been sabotaged, hijacked in interstellar space, and robbed of its cargo. This would be bad enough even if all it were carrying was luxury goods, but the freighter Nebula Plow was carrying more than just normal trade goods. Indeed, her cargo of Non-Orientable Wormholes for use in starship power plants was both very expensive and very, very dangerous. Now the Red Star Union has to worry about a pirate crew running around with several extra devices capable of converting matter into antimatter with negligible energy cost. With those, the pirates could be capable of inflicting untold damage if allowed to leverage their ill-gotten gains into a stronger position, a possibility the Union finds completely intolerable. Unfortunately, all that the Red Star Union has to go on for evidence is two names; that of the captain, and that of the ship. The Captain is going by the possible pseudonym of Fuller, while the ship is named Bark’s Finest. And thus the orders came down to the Union’s Bureau of Starforce Intelligence: find more information on these pirates, conclusively identify them, and figure out where exactly they’ve gone to ground so that the fleet can crush them before they get established. Of the many agents that the bureau assigned to this mission, one would happen to play an important role: Field Agent Madeline Zargosty. This is her story. This story is entirely pre-written, and will have one chapter released per week. If you want to read it all ahead of schedule and get access to some premium-exclusive bonus content, the entire book is available for purchase; links to the appropriate storefront pages will be posted at the end of each chapter.
