《Incubators》Session Zero - 11/1/21

Heya reader,
Thanks for taking a chance on Incubators (previously, Untitled Alien Project).
I just want to take a minute to let you know what to expect here.
This story is a dual entry for both the Royal Road Writathon as well as National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo - https://nanowrimo.org/), and it's inspired by my love of sci-fi horror of the type found in the Alien franchise.
With that said, please keep in mind the following about the content and the structure of Incubators:
CONTENT:
If this story were a movie, it would be rated a hard "R" for language, violence, and gore.
Now, I don't love gore for the sake of gore or violence for the sake of violence. To that end, I promise to keep any body-horror/"squick" elements horrifying instead of glorifying (or should it be "glorrorfying"?)
I do love me some good swearing, though, so be prepared for that.
STRUCTURE:
I've always clung to the hope of "traditional" publishing, and I've got a history of perfectionism when it comes to writing.
So you probably won't be surprised to discover that the vast majority of my work never sees the light of day.
Entering this piece in the Royal Road Writathon as well as NaNoWriMo means I'm taking a different approach. I want to complete a big writing project, I want people to read it, and I'm trying not to care about the fact that I haven't put it through a whole bunch of edits. So:
- Each "Chapter" contains the words I actually sat down and wrote on the date in the chapter title.
- Each "Chapter" is unedited, outside of any egregious issues I catch while reformatting for Royal Road.
- Each "Chapter" has a high likelihood of awkwardly ending right in the middle of a scene.

- Later "Chapters" have a small likelihood of breaking continuity, introducing incompatible characterizations, etc.
My intention is to write a lot, get feedback, and hopefully entertain some people along the way. If this goes well, I'll put the finished piece through a few rounds of edits, pay for a decent cover, and throw it up on Amazon/Barnes&Noble/Smashwords/etc. If it doesn't go well, then I'll just keep it here for posterity and move on to something new. Hopefully something better. Dear God, please.
So. Incubators. Here we go.
Thanks for reading,

ERROR BOUNTY:
One last thing.
As I've gotten older, more and more embarrassing errors have started creeping into my writing. I'm not talking about typos - I'm talking about basic stuff like using "their" when I mean "there", "effect" instead of "affect", etc.
Yeah, I kinda hate that? So if you find any egregious errors - most likely homophonic ones, or inappropriate possessification of a plural noun (e.g. "alien's" when I mean "aliens") please let me know.
FOR EVERY EGREGIOUS ERROR READERS FIND, I WILL DONATE $5.00 TO CHARITY AND PROVIDE THE RECEIPTS.
I'll keep a running list of any errors found and the charity bounty paid right here at the bottom of this page - check back often!

8 610City of Mages: Mage War Chronicles Book One
This book is COMPLETELY FINISHED as of 3/10/22, with a sequel currently serializing HERE. Born a fire mage, destined for something greater. For hundreds of years, Sombria has lived in peace thanks to the delicate balance the Council fosters between those with magic and those without. But unrest is brewing under the surface of Sombria, and the Council's tenuous hold may be on the verge of collapsing. All Alara ever wanted was to become a soldier, fighting to protect Sombria from the bruya rebels that threaten its borders with their chaotic magic and lawlessness. In order to succeed, she must first conquer her worst fear--her own innate magical abilities. Quenti, raised to hate the oppressive thumb of the Council, has only ever wanted a life of peace away from those who wish to control her. When her abilities are revealed, she finds herself at the center of a world she grew up despising, where magic is suppressed under the illusion of control. And her only means of escape may lie in trusting those she grew up doubting most. When Alara is given one final chance to prove she's worthy of being called a Mage of Sombria, the key to her success may lie within the untrusting Quenti. And Quenti doesn't plan on making things easy. Though as their two lives come crashing together, trusting each other may be the only choice they have to survive what's coming. -- COMMENT AND FOLLOW! 📕 This story is completely written, but these postings on Royal Road double as a beta run, so please feel free to point out typos or inconsistencies. 📖 Content Guidelines: Mild language, PG-13-level violence

The universe is contantly corroded by the void. So, I must expand my universe faster than the void corrodes it. But is that our destiny? To fight against the void until we fall? No. There has to be a way. I must escape the void. But how does one escape from nothingness?
