《Path of Salvation》Chapter 044: Aqua I
Advertisement
Aqua, on the day that Elena returned, the day Elena has to report on her failure, decided to meet Raven while the rest were occupied with other things. Alpha and Emma were partaking in another game as a duo. Liam and Franky were hanging out with Ben and Altair trying to comfort him enough to talk about the Scavengers. Prometheia ran off doing her own thing for now. Akio and Reflecta ran off as soon as they were left alone with Aqua. Hellfire was fulfilling his duty by protecting their city and the countryside.
While on her way to meet Raven, she encountered a Demon. Astral Griseo was a rather weak and fragile Demon that barely could maintain its form. Prior to turning into a Demon, this being was two separate entities. Two Dream Catchers that were punished for treason were overloaded with dark magic and tortured until they couldn't stand it any longer. Before they could turn into two separate Demons, their souls were merged together with a recently discovered divine key. Two souls were forcibly linked together and merged into each other.
Griseo's domain was a simple fungal growth that was corrupted by rifts in space and static. The growth kept flickering and buffering as it slowly crept closer to Aqua. She didn't care and simply watched the Demon itself covering in fear and struggling to keep itself together. Its form was that of two girls, one at the age of eight and the other at the age of fourteen, split in half and merged together. Its right half was that of the fourteen-year-old while its left half was the eight-year-old.
"Griseo… Astral…"
She never met these two girls. Aqua only read about them. The Demon was struggling to crawl towards her and fell apart as soon as another person entered its domain. The one that had disrupted its form was Raven. Raven had never seen something like this and went straight for the offensive. However, the domain shattered right after its form was destroyed.
"Raven? Well… since you're here we can talk everything. Where's 12? Let's-"
"It's Theo… His name's Theo," Raven stated.
"So you've finally made the choice to choose their names, huh? I wasn't expecting you to suddenly care-"
"Let's just get to it, okay?" Clearly uncomfortable, he deflected whatever Aqua threw at him.
Standing on top of train tracks somewhere along the way to Raven's mansion, the two stared at each other: one with contempt and the other with guilt.
"So what was that Demon? Did you seriously take care of it that quickly?", asked Raven. He had seen a few Demons fall apart but it's rather rare. At a time like this… At a time when Demons are growing stronger it's even rarer for them to just self destruct or collapse on themself.
"Huh? You should know, shouldn't you?", mocked Aqua. She disliked Raven for some reason.
"I don't. I'm sorry…"
Aqua's domain was a rather strange one. Though they can only see a part of it, her domain was somewhat based on Ancient Greece. An ekklesiasterion, a place open for popular assembly that once was a part of Greece… The only modification made to it was the addition of a polished marble roundtable.
"I guess that wasn't a part of your department. You and your strange gang of “Purifiers” likely weren't that involved with torture and only killed and captured," she claimed. "These people were so-called “traitors” that were submitted to tests as there was no use for them. One of those tests was merging souls to make people stronger. Obviously you'd need lab rats to test that out and why not chose those you've captured so far?"

Raven was guilty of providing these souls. Though there was more to this story, Aqua believed that she had enough of this topic. Not wanting to dig too deep into this topic, she moved on to the topic she originally was here for.
"Your last mission was a failure and now you're wasting your time by pretending to have some sort of bond with people you hurt and tortured throughout life…"
"I'm sorry…"
"There's no need to apologize. I know that this isn't a genuine apology. At least fulfill your missions without casualties if you're going to pretend to care about people."
He remained quiet and averted his gaze.
"Elena went into a coma. Phantom lost his memories and now has to start over as Chronos. Sylvia probably is dead. Daisy was scarred badly enough with those pills of hers that she still is incapable of transforming and fighting. You lost your prestige, this battle, your money, and your underling's trust and obediance," she spouted.
No reaction.
"And the worst of it all: You wanted to pin this all on Elena!"
"I didn't! I wasn't planning to-" Raven panicked as he wasn't expecting anyone to catch on.
"Oh? So you react now? I guess you just don't care about everything else, huh?", she asked trying to provoke another reaction. He was trying to hold himself back and didn't want to reveal anything else.
Aqua kept staring at him trying to make him uncomfortable enough to get a definitive answer. After an hour of staring, he finally cracked.
"I was planning to but I didn't do it…"
It was all that she needed. The popular assembly placed somewhere underground was isolated from the outside world of her domain. She finally transformed into her proper Dream Catcher form. Her outfit consisted of a blue dress with long sleeves. With two thigh-high slits and a diamond cutout on her left sleeve, she summoned a trident. All over her dress was a pattern of a nightsky with stars and other celestial objects. Attached to her hip was a golden compass pointing above them. As she wielded her trident with her right, a chestplate, leatherwear underneath that right sleeve, and armor on her right arm, it was of importance to her to always be capable of fighting.
"Confess! How dare you use others as pawns and scapegoasts for your own gain?!"
"I didn't have a choice!", he yelled as he summoned a rifle.
His first shot bounched off her armor as she threw her trident at him. Piercing his stomach, she nailed him into a column. Quickly, Raven pulled out the trident and fled as fast as possible.
Turning around, he noticed that Aqua was gone. She was nowhere to be seen and therefore unpredictable. WIthin that short timeframe spent looking back, she attacked him once again.
He barely dodged her next thrust by jumping back and summoned a sword to fend off another attack. Holding her at bay despite being inferior at strength, he asked, "I was just trying to survive! We were stripped of our freedom and forced to commit to duties that weren't ours!"
Thrown off his feet, he took off with the wings of a raven. Trying to dig his way out, he dug into a world above and allowed for cracks to form in this cave. Water streamed in as Raven fled the scene.
Swimming for a solid minute, he reached the surface, a world struck by disaster. Buildings were about five meters deep into rather clear waters. Barren and empty land was covered beneath waters that covered the whole planet. Flying onto one of the buildings not fully submerged by water, he took a deep breath. Now that he's been cleared of the dark magic he carried back in the battle against The Coordinator, he can regenerate with ease and rather fast.

Aqua swam up behind him and threw another trident as she jumped out. Summoning a halberd, she swiftly slashed away at his stomach nearly gutting him. Focusing on healing, he recovered in seconds.
"A lot of us were promised dreams and peace and accepted because we didn't know what the consequences were! How can you blame me!", he yelled at her even more frustrated than before.
Thrown back into the ocean with another thrust, he was in great pain as he tried pulling out the halberd residing within him. Her focus solely lies on keeping him trapped and making sure that he spills the truth on why he has done the things he's done.
After crawling back onto another building, he cried, "I also was looking out for these eleven! We all were unfortunate and I tried working towards a greater future with money! I was trying my best so why?"
Aqua approached him once again by gliding over the surface.
"Why are we the ones suffering!"
His Soul Solid darkened and cracked as he once again unleashed something not fully within his control. This time, a birdcage sprouted from his spine and entrapped his head as it filled with black goo. His wings were mere bone structures resembling wings yet gave him the ability to fly. Boils and dark pockets of puss spread all over his body as he flew into Aqua and slammed her back into another public assembly.
Distancing herself from him, she questioned why he would go so far to avoid being truthful.
"We were victims!", he yelled.
"So what?!", she replied.
Arms sprouted from his spine creating bird origami that would come to life. Swallows came into being with the origami.
"Unlike you, me and Elena are weak people that have to depend on taking!"
"Elena's not like that at all!", she countered. She had overheard Franky's and Elena's short conversation about being a martyr and knew more about her than she led on.
"Both of us were forced into shady deals and only were allowed to bear unhappiness!"
"You've only been thinking about yourself! Elena is different! Elena only cares about others!"
Aqua's conflict lies in her past. Not long ago she had a friend that built others up while also distancing herself through snide remarks and coming off as crude. Her self-hate and her need to help others while also keeping them away from herself eventually would turn her into a Demon. She also was duty-driven like Aqua. Her turning into a Demon drove Aqua away from duty while she's still clinging onto it as that is the only thing she knows.
"You made the decision to create a miserable bunch. At least stop being a coward and earnestly confront the issues you've caused!"
She too started transforming into a more grotesque version of herself. Standing on all fours, her limbs broke as they turned white by bending in unnatural ways. Growing longer, they also grew thicker and turned into claws. Her torso grew longer as another pair of limbs came out of her sides. Her lower back created two tentacles with the heads of a great white shark at its ends. A massive murning hat with a veil placed itself on Aqua constantly releasing a stream of water polluted by oil. Her hair started thinning as she started looking a lot more sick with that now elongated neck of hers.
Raven gained autonomy of his form after realizing that he could turn just as monstrous as Aqua. The birdcage on his head instead turned into one lone blade while the arms on his back remained. Gaining clear sight of everything around him, he watched Aqua leap into the air to let loose her sharks. Elongating towards him, one of them caught a hold of one of the dark arms while the other was dodged in time.
The shark that devoured the arm dug underground chasing after Raven who's now dashing towards Aqua. The other one kept trying to crash into him only to barely miss its target.
Only a couple meters away from Aqua, did the one that dug itself underneath him emerge to unleash a mighty wave it had been building up. Raven struck Aqua with a few exploding swallows and the new weapon he was holding onto. Right after that he took off to dodge the wave yet he didn't flee even when he had the chance to do so.
His final attack was fusing all the swallows into one massive and faceless version. Using it in hopes of waking Aqua up, she too unleashed her greatest move. A giant copy of Aqua made of water missing its lower half formed around her to mash together its hands and slam them into the ground unleashing a massive quantity of water that ripped the paper swallows to shreds.
Nearly drowning Raven, she pinned him down with four of her claws on his arms and legs while the sharks were about ready to go for the kill. Her face has turned white in battle and her lips faded away as her jaw grew bigger to harden and turn into an even deadly version with teeth more akin to those of a canine.
"Goodbye, Raven," uttered the monster pinning down Raven. "It hurts me when I see just how weak you are. You're a victim because you're weak. You lost your friends because you're weak. You lost your duty because you're weak. You suffer because you're supposed to be strong!"
Though it did say Raven's name, it seemed to mix in Aqua's personal struggles with the ones Raven faced. The water in this area had dissipated with one thought.
"Goodbye," it said saddened. "Goobye, weak Raven!"
One of the sharks bit off his right arm as the other closed in on his neck. Aqua regained control and jumped off him as her form shattered only leaving behind her original form.
Raven only had one last thing to say: "I intend to face the problems I've caused and make amends for the atrocities I've committed. If you need my help to do the same, then hit me up in a more stable state."
Aqua was dealing with her own personal issues all on her own. Silently suffering as she strongly held onto the belief of only the weak deserving support while the strong suffer in silence and force their way through life, she repressed the emotions that had been stirring in her. Not wanting to confront them, she mostly pushed them aside as she tried to be of use to Elena and the others. She couldn't grasp why Elena wouldn't question her existence here and cast her aside. She couldn't grasp why Elena was so easy to accept Alpha, Liam, and Prometheia into her home.
"Maybe I'm just a bad person?", she asked herself the past couple of weeks.
Questioning her duty after the death of her friend, she found herself lost and confused. Once the prestiged explorer of strange domains that shouldn't exist, worlds beyond the scope of human minds, and even other universes, she's fallen to the status of a traitor for questioning superiors and the way they mistreat Dream Catchers.
"Maybe I'm weak?!", she asked herself as she smashed a mirror within her house.
Reflecta and Akio had returned home that evening as they are a lot less fearful of her than they were before. It's a wonder that they even decided to live with her. They even grew sympathetic and are trying to understand her as they walk on eggshells not trying to upset her. Even now, as they heard her destroy something in the entryway, they hid upstairs.
"Are you okay?", asked Akio rather guarded. He mustered up the courage to actually talk to her.
"I'm sorry. I'll clean it up."
