《Path of Salvation》Chapter 040: Card Collectors III

Leo and Gertrude dealt with a massive brawny man covered in fur and looking like a stereotypical wrestler that was half animal. With the snout of a wolf he ran ahead and jumped into the air. His hands were hairy claws meant to impale and slice whatever they came in contact with. His wrestler singlet was black with a purple star on top of his chest. On his back was his name, Bulldozer, in purple. Barely reacting in time, Leo threw Gertrude in duress. Claws dug into his torso as he was pushed back down to where the skyscraper once stood. Gertrude let one small vine spawn from one of the massive vines quickly letting it dig beneath the rubble and fetch the flag. Shortly after landing, perfectly unscathed, she took off with the flag as she had run out of magic and natural power.

Leo engaged with Bulldozer trying to rile his opponent up as they wrestled on top of rubble. Bull was on top of Leo yet struggled to keep him down. Even when he tries to impale or slice Leo, he struggles to do so. However, Leo wasn't doing too well either as none of his bloes were dealing damage. His skills allowed him to send a rock flying upwards and melt off edges only to mold it with spiritual power and coating it within it. Sending it back down, he knocked out Bulldozer and quickly launched his opponent off him.

Within fractions of a second, Bulldozer was back up and ready to fight. Leo created his first weapon, a halberd so that he can keep the distance in close combat.

"For some reason I can't use combustion and ignition on him… Interesting!", he thought.

"Your call yourself Bulldozer so I can call you Bull, right?"

Bull didn't respond and looked rather empty as he charged at him again. Spiritual power was protecting his arms as he was going for a punch. Holding Bull at bay with a thrust, Bull blocked by using spiritual power to coat his chest and protect himself. He was pushing back rather strongly. Fighting on top of rubble was taxing on the ankles but rather miniscule damage that just heals in a fraction of a second. The rubble was giving away nearly making Leo slip.

"What? Cat got your tongue?"

No reaction.

Leonardo half of the time is dependant on riling up his enemies to get the upper hand and playfully finish them off. The other half is him simply obliterating his target with a flaming greatsword. However, he'd rather refrain from using that before he can figure out what exactly is Bull's ability and why he is so unresponsive. As such, he fired a flare to request help. Realizing that Reflecta wouldn't be there to help him he hoped that at least someone like Hyperion can send some form of message.

Creating a chainsaw attached to a chain, he tried cutting into Bull. That opponent of his wouldn't budge and therefore was unbeatable for now.

"When I hit him with a rock, he briefly was knocked out. Blunt attacks don't work as long as he's on his feet and “conscious”. Knocking him out is all I need, right?"

Before he could carry through with his plan, Bulldozer turned white as he coated himself in spiritual power. His entire body was coated within it and now impenetrable. Somehow he had gained a speed boost as well and took Leo by surprise. Jumping into the air, Leo hoped to evade his next charge. However, his ankle was caught and used as a means to slam him into the ground obliterating everything within the area.

"I can't move…", Leo thought as his hands rested on the back of his neck. He has survived the attack but is now so badly injured that he barely can move. Right after, Bull would stomp on his stomach and break off his legs. Now satisfied with the state he's left his opponent in, Bulldozer charged forward running after Gertrude while plowing through buildings that weren't destroyed.

Leo was worn out and incapable of fighting while Gertrude struggled to get by on her own. She fled in fear thinking of a way to avoid confrontation. He would catch up with her soon as he had been chasing after her for the past five minutes at far greater speeds. Using growths of plants, she kept elevating herself to rise higher to a building where she can cover in fear from. Finally, she got to a hotel with thirty floors. Even if it was empty, it should be sturdy enough for delaying Bulldozer.

"What happened to Leo? Why is he not here?", she wondered. "What do I do…"

The situation was rather hopeless. She knew that there was something behind the flare her companions had sent. It was a call for help from the others. Hoping that anyone else will intervene and help, she decided to refrain from acting.

"Leo will eventually come back and help, right? They'll help us, right?"

The hotel was starting to give away as its foundation was being destroyed. Gertrude fell off. Bull stepped back outside trying to beat her midair. A rock came flying at the back of his head somewhat scarring Bull. Shortly knocking him out, Leo gave Gertrude the chance to permanently knock him out before he could recover and become invincible once again. Two syringes were inserted into Bull's throat. A massive mushroom was all that was left behind of Bull.

In the meantime, Leo had taken out the other two and sent the rock towards Bull trying to aid her in battle. Having assembled a bunch of pieces of glass to allow Reflecta a gateway for conversation, he was made aware of the fact that the respawn pad was destroyed. Killing enemies was now perfectly fine. However, it came at the expense of Gertrude as she was crushed beneath rubble.

Before the three long-range fighters and their protectors could head into the tower, a massive fire in form of a thumbs up with three lines over its thumb was heading down the main road: A sign from Leonardo that their battle was over. Exploding before it could reach the tower, Reflecta and Alpha got the message.

"It's time!", said Hyperion.

Reflecta allowed a passage into the building by letting a glass pane be connected to the glass doors leading to the top. Him and Franky were supposed to deal with the sniper head on as Emma and Liam draw closer with their protectors. Five out of ten people on the enemy team were taken out. Three out of ten people on their team were incapable of fighting. Out of those three one had been eliminated in an effort to take down the three people trying to step into their base.

King nodded and jumped into the glass pane with Hyperion following suit. The others also were teleported directly beneath the two as they are supposed to scan the building for more enemies and make sure that none of them interfere.

Emma and Rythm jumped straight down the flight of stairs. Jumping down did little to no damage while also making sure that there was nowhere else in the tower. White threads at the bottom shot out drills going directly for Emma. Rythm held onto the railing before they could reach the bottom while also grabbing Emma trying to get her to safety. Swinging onto one of the floors, she dodged the first badge of drills. However, these same threads were throughout all the floors of the building. All Reflecta could do was deflect as many as she can by using shattering glass around her and throwing it around to teleport these drills anywhere else outside of this building trying to protect herself and three others.

Rythm used herself as a meatshield as she realized just how many of these drills were up ahead.

Emma took this as a sign to quickly shoot far weaker arrows down the corridor to make way for the two of them. The threads unfolded releasing chunks of buildings. Quickly the two of them weasled their way through the rubble making it into one of the rooms.

"Are you okay?", Emma asked as Rythm hunched over with holes and drills embedded into her back.

Rythm simply shook them out. Healing instantly after the drills were removed, she simply ignored that question. Instead she moved her focus on to the walls as she saw something Emma couldn't. Within one of the walls was a being she could tear out with ease.

"Come on! Stop being so stubborn and just give in. Do I really have to get serious?"

Rather annoyed she kept bashing it into the wall it came from. Trying to get an answer out of the strange stuffed man-sized plushy resembling a person, she kept bashing it into the wall. Threads gathered around her and dragged her into the wall as Emma was left to fend for herself. Another presence was right behind her just about to strike. One lone shot and decimated that being.

Turning around, Emma spotted Liam. The two of them had somehow found each other.

"What happened to Rythm?", he asked. With no visible wounds in sight, he decided to ask for the status of her partner.

Emma looked back at the wall spotting nothing unusual. Rythm had vanished.

"And you? Where's Melody?"

Liam shook his head.

The two were alone and now had to deal with a foe they couldn't handle. Liam had no physical strength and therefore nothing to use in close-quarters combat. Emma had had a few share of times where that was the only thing she could use but disliked doing so.

"Maybe I should just stop time, and-"

"Don't! Things appear out of nowhere and vanish at random… You just shot somebody and they somehow vanished without us noticing…"

Grabbing Liam by his hand, Emma jumped out of the building as she fired another supercharged arrow. Destroying the base, she intended to draw out the few left within. One shadowy figure emerged from the flames trying to chase after them.

"Now!", she yelled at Liam.

Stopping time, everyone was frozen in place but the shadowy figure still followed the two of them while remaining within a cloak that covered the entirety of their body. Two more figures were trying to follow but also were frozen in time. Emma fired one more arrow midair trying to get their pursuer. Their assailant also stopped moving as he too became frozen in time.

After a rough landing, Emma ordered Liam to let time flow again.

"Shouldn't we be running after them?", asked Liam.

"We don't know what we're dealing with. This thing collapsing surely will grant us and them a little more time to capture the flag, right?"

The ones following were completely unscathed and finally landed. One was missing as the other two drew closer. Rather hopeless, Liam panicked as Emma took charge. Somehow these threads had been scattered into the air meaning that something may emerge any moment.

Not fond of using her physical strength, she fired another arrow that would split apart. Predicting that someone would emerge right behind them, she turned around. A bald and muscular man with scars and dragon tattoos all over his body… Only wearing shorts, he jumped out of a thread as Emma buried her fist right into his right cheek. Slamming him into the ground, she followed with a massive explosion that knocked him out. Holding onto Liam by his collar, she ran off to circle around the skyscraper by flight as drills were fired at her. Dodging and firing at once, she struggled to get by on her own. Hiding on one of the upper floors, the two took a break.

"My gun!", exclaimed Liam.

"Really? You realize that now?!", she yelled rather irritated.

Taking a short break to recover her magic as she lied within one of the rooms, she thought about ways to deal with the other two. However, their abilities remained an enigma. Neither could tell what exactly they were capable of and therefore wanted to avoid engaging in battle with just the two of them.

"I still need my gu-"

"Shut up and think of ways to fix this mess."

"Sandman! Deal with the intruders and make sure you don't destroy any of my puppets!", ordered the lone sniper controlling this whole group. Sandman did as ordered and approached the three of them. Towering over them at the height of three meters, there was something odd about his demeanor.

Hyperion backed away as Akio finally got the chance to fully utilize his strength while Reflecta teleported away to a safe spot. Striking with his flaming katana, he split Sandman into. Before something could take them by surprise, Hyperion utilized his key-sized divine key to tug at Akio's shirt and pull him back.

"Huh? What are y-"

Hyperion pointed at Sandman showing them that fighting these two may be even harder than expected. The sniper herself finally aimed at the three of them firing her first shot. King took the hit being split and half while holding a thumbs up. Only a short amount of time was spent on regenerating. The two, Sandman and King, had fully recovered within seconds.

The two snipers, Hyperion and Nagant, were quietly observing each other. With Nagant releasing mannequins, Akio also had his set of opponents to deal with. For some reason, Nagant nodded at Hyperion being incredibly cocky with that smirk of hers.

Creating a thread to connect to another building, she took off heading for another building. Hyperion followed after her believing that he stands a chance at taking her out. Melody was watching from afar quietly aiding wherever she could with none of the others any wiser. Hyperion, though he noticed her, ignored her as he knew that she was helping in some shape or form.

"I go by two names: Nagant and Puppeteer. And you?"

"Hyperion… So you just want to measure yourself with another sniper just because you can? Aren't you here for the price money?", said Hyperion.

"The price money? My first priority is spotting talent like you… talent that can become even greater! The price money is just a simple bonus I enjoy after every battle. Have you heard of the Anti-Defection-Legion? I lead that bunch and am responsible for so many assassinations of people that have defected. Maybe you'd want to join too? We pay well and even allow for retirement so-"

"I'm not interested. This is a great way to measure myself in battle, right?"

Wiping that smile of hers off her face, she took her first shot. She missed as the two of them jumped away from each other firing hundreds of shots that went astray, were deflected, or missed. What Nagant didn't know is the fact that her cockiness allowed for an opening. Hyperion had dropped his divine key to attack her when she wasn't expecting it.

However, instead Hyperion would be taken by surprise by another enemy. Barely dodging their first attack, he was grazed by a drill while being shot in the leg. Still he had about just enough time to take out Nagant's legs and take out the burly man responsible for firing these rings. He was taken out just as he took out one of the enemies.

Akio dealt with ten marionettes that kept regenerating when cut down. Carrying switchblades within their arms and legs, he was wondering just how long it would take for Reflecta to recover enough magic to aid him. However, she already was on the move aiding Emma and Liam. After coming in contact with Melody, she recovered Liam's rifle and gave him the option to fight once again.

King struggled too deal with Sandman and therefore decided to keep it trapped within the building. Unaware that Emma and Liam still wre within it, he sent Sandman flying straight to the bottom. After so long, the building finally started collapsing but the flag was within reach and therefore secured… at least for now.

Victory was already secured but King wanted absolute victory and therefore went after the other enemies. Going directly for Nagant, he laughed at her pitiful state as he spotted her from afar. She still was missing her legs and therefore a little helpless.

Squatting in front of her, he asked, "So? Satisfied now? Controlling all your teammates and then being surprised that you can't keep control of the situation, huh? You could have won had you been less of a control freak and more of a leader, right?"

"Don't lecture me! I can just-"

King crushed her skull underneath his foot taking her out as well. Sandman and two others were the only ones remaining. He believed it was time to aid Emma and Liam. That way he can secure absolute victory and make sure that they win with a spectacular finale.

Emma finally figured out why the person in a cloak was so impossible to defeat: They simply copied their abilities one at a time while the other one remained a mystery. But that all lost its relevance as the building collapsed just after the other two stepped into the skyscraper. The severance of Nagant's control shortly left them dazed and confused, just enough time for them to be crushed. Even Sandman couldn't disassemble himself in time.

The victory was a rather strange one and unbeknownst to them left the spectators rather confused but also satisfied. Hyperion and the rest were simply happy as they would cash in.

Still, it left a sour taste within Franky's mouth as there was something that left him unhappy.
