《Path of Salvation》Chapter 038.5A: Prometheia I

Prometheia anxiously sat on top of the couch making herself small. Believing that someone may drive her out or even kill her for being a Z, she anxiously awaited the moment Alpha and the others would come back. Not allowing herself to be distracted, she turned off the TV and lied in wait for an attack that may come.
"I have to stay vigilant! I can't afford to be caught off-guard. I doubt Nyx and Loriel would attack. Nyx seems a little too reserved and doesn't seem like the type of person that would want to incur the wrath of others. Loriel is too nice and would put her grievances aside for the kind hosts she's with. Hellfire and Aqua may attack but Hellfire respects Elena to some extent. He wouldn't hurt Elena by killing me. Aqua is… She's someone I'll have to look out for as long as she's here." Prometheia's thoughts were going haywire out of fear.
Though she was aware of the risks that would come with letting herself be alone, she felt the need to let the four of them go and maybe have fun. They at least should get to experience being at those gmaes and get the chance to grow stronger. Even if that puts her life at risk, she has to let them go.
"Stop panicking! Everything's gonna be fine! There's nothing to worry about! And think about the others!", she told herself over and over. The only Z to show fear, the only Z to transform into a human, the only Z with the ability to grow… Will end today.
Sensing someone in the house, Prometheia opted for jumping out of the closest window before they could get ahold of her. Escaping the stranger that had entered without her knowledge just in time, she made a dash for the nearest ally. Though it was rather early, there still were enough people for the assailant to not attack out in the streets. At 7am, she was running towards Franky's house, where Ben was at the moment. Avoiding alleys and empty streets, she ran as fast as she can.
"Who was that? Did Aqua really try to attack me? Was it Nyx?!", Prometheia wondered as she walked by another alley. Though it was faint, she could sense a Demon right there. A lone child walked straight into it but Prometheia had to move on and make it to safety.
"Is this really right?", she thought as she moved on. Running further she doubted whether or not this was right.
"I can't just leave it there!" Turning around, she transformed into a human and ran towards the domain wherein the child was located. Straight into the alleyway, she found the domain of Rashana.
Hearing the cries of the child that had escaped some parents view, Prometheia leaped over a wall blocking her view. Upon closer inspection, she noticed the barren landscape occupied by mannequins drawing on a canvas. Forcing the child to draw as Rashana itself was inspecting all the paintings one by one, a General set its gaze on Prometheia. Whenever the child tried to flee or rebel, it would be beaten into submission and be forced to start over. Prometheia too would be dragged away by the fiend trying to make the kid draw. Whenever a minion doesn't create a picture perfect copy of the landscape, the floating eyeball that is Rashana would grow teeth and skinny but also long arms to execute the one who had done wrong. Grabbing the mannequin and shoving it into its large gaping mouth, it would chew the mannequin into bits and pieces and spit its remains out.

The General occupying the role of providing artists was just one large headless man at the height of two meters and weighing 200 kilograms. Its belly out and exposed as it somehow forced bloodied clothing onto itself, it walked around with its massive and gray body. Hairy and oozing greasy secretions out of its body, it was quite the disgusting underling. However, before it could grab a hold of Prometheia, Prometheia transformed into her Z-form and ran towards the kid.
Before Rashana itself could inspect the child and its painting, Prometheia transformed into a human and ran off carrying the child as it was beaten to the point of having broken bones and lost consciousness as soon as it felt comfortable within the arms of Prometheia. Running off, Prometheia ran as fast as she can. The minions wouldn't act on her rebellion and simply kept on painting.
"What do I do?", she thought as she finally reached the edge of the domain. Finally ending up within the alley she had been in earlier, she came across Aqua.
"What happened?", she inquired as she stared daggers into Prometheia. Questioning why Prometheia would risk her life to a random child, she wondered whether or not Prometheia was trying to recruit someone into becoming a Dream Catcher.
Tending to the boy's wounds, Aqua let Prometheia go.
"You're saying that you're being pursued? By who?", asked Ben standing within the doorway.
"I don't know. But I could feel them coming closer…"
Inviting her in, the two went for the living room where Loriel was drinking tea. Surprisingly, her and Nyx hadn't left yet despite wanting to stay for just a week. As compensation, they spend their time helping out with general tasks like cleaning the house, cooking a meal, or buying groceries. Nyx is still asleep and sleeping within the basement while Ben is preparing a meal that's supposed to be their dinner for the next few days since Franky has been eating out a lot lately.
"Well… Can you take mae sure that this doesn't burn until I come back? I have to get something really quick," said Ben as he left the house in a hurry. Meanwhile, another Demon was on the loose and needed to be taken care of. Loriel grabbed Nyx and headed towards it meaning that Prometheia is all alone once again.
Again, she could feel the presence of someone watching her. This time, she felt a lot less hostility meaning that the one pursuing her has lost interest in killing her. However, she still was afraid as someone was stalking her.
"Why are you following me?", she asked her pursuer as she kew that they were listening.
No answer. However, the door did open.
"So it was you, Aqua?", Prometheia said.
Pointing a floating trident at Prometheia, Aqua's hostility acted up again. Prometheia didn't react as to not show fear. Though Alpha refrains from doing so, Devil Seeds can absorb dark magic to alleviate a Dream Catchers overabundance of dark magic and prevent them from turning into a Demon. Zs can carry these Devil Seeds with them in some kind of space unknown to mankind. They themself do not know where these spaces are, but at will they can make use of them and drag out Devil Seeds. This is only done when the dark magic within Devil Seeds allows for the Demons within to come back to life once again.

Three Demons, Yuma, Yurei, and Yuna, emerged. Their domains intertwined and trapped Aqua. Prometheia took in a deep breath as she had dealt with the threat just before Ben arrived. In a hurry, while carrying a paper bag full of what seems to be medicine, he headed towards the kitchen making sure that everything was alright with the meal he put together.
Prometheia was nowhere to be found. However, she did steer the pot a couple of times making sure that it didn't go to waste. Slipping out through a window in the kitchen, she headed back out knowing of the fact that three Demons won't keep her assailant occupied for long. The ten minutes of a head start would allow her to buy a ticket and get on the nearest train. As soon as no one is watching, she'll sneak onto the train and head towards the hospital holding Elena.
"What good would approaching Elena do? It's not like she can help me right now…", Prometheia thought. Elena won't be helping her out. The others are on another continent far from home. The only choice she had was fight and try to win.
Somehow Aqua had already catched up with her. It took her little to no time to get to Prometheia. Prometheia had no time to prepare. All she had was willpower and very little strength. However, she had to find a place where they can fight. With no domain of her own, she has to make sure that Aqua doesn't drag them into her domain.
"Is a domain really exclusive to just Dream Catchers?", she wondered as she jumped out of the train running straight towards a nearby forest. Even if she was bordering on Lamia's and Raven's territory, two people that aren't the most fond of Zs as both are tied to their duties not because they wanted to, but because they were forced to.
"I can do it too!", she told herself while determined of the fact that she's capable of doing it too. Space warped around her as she gave her all to concentrating on creating her own domain. However, instead of simply creating her domain, the elements went haywire. Natural power caused massive overgrowth in the forest they were in. Aqua, right on her tail, was dragged into the air by a spruce tree growing straight towards the heavens.
Jumping down she somehow had to navigate her way down as trees grew in her way. Prometheia was going haywire but regained her composure shortly after that. Just like that, she finally felt that she could do it too. A ball of light expanded from her chest growing larger as it enveloped her and Aqua.
The world was blank and absolutely empty. The two of them were floating in the air among endless blue skies that had do end to the serene view. Aqua was stunned by the sudden creation of a domain coming directly from a Z. It was unprecedented and unheard of. No Z ever was capable of creating a natural domain.
"What exactly-"
The domain shattered before Aqua could ask any more questions. The two of them fell back down onto the magical forest that Prometheia had cultivated. She had lost consciousness for the first time. For the first time she was exhausted. For the first time she opposed authority.
However, Aqua was perfectly fine and could kill at any given moment. With no one else to protect Prometheia, she was vulnerable. Anyone could kill her right now. Aqua could kill her right now.
"Is she really a Z?", Aqua asked herself. Her thoughts of doubt flooded in.
"She must be… How else would she be capable of summoning Devil Seeds at will? It's probably just a ploy from them. They're probably plotting something!" Aqua came closer and readied her weapon.
Still, after all that, she can't just kill Prometheia.
"They're always scheeming something! Whenever we lower our guards they strike and make our lives miserable!"
Aqua thought back to comerades she had lost in battle. Shortly after that followed comerades that had turned into Demons. After that she remembered how much they had suffered under magic.
"But it's my duty. I have no one but myself to blame for all those losses. Had I asked questions they surely would have provided answers. Instead I pretended that there was some form of ideal world lying behind magic. The only thing I have to blame is myself and as such I should take responsibility…"
Her trident dissolved into water as she reached for Prometheia. Gently carrying her away, they headed back towards where they came from. Aqua made the decision to keep her alive until she's figured out what makes Prometheia so special.

Author's Thoughts: What is litRPG (From wikipedia) - LitRPG, short for Literary Role Playing Game, is a literary genre combining the conventions of MMORPGs with science-fiction fantasy novels.[1] LitRPG is a literary genre where games or game-like challenges form an essential part of the story. A LitRPG work simultaneously narrates the story of characters inside and outside of the game-world. At least some of the characters in a LitRPG novel therefore understand that they are playing a game: they are 'meta-aware'. So, while Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is a fantasy novel, a book about people creating avatars and interacting in a Lord of the Rings MMORPG would be a LitRPG novel. Why do I read them? You know, I am not too sure. I love MMOs. I played them, quit them, joined up and repeated the cycle. They are fun! They are a massive waste of time but so are most games. Do I want to read about someone else playing them? Sort of?The advent of VR and the possibility of VR someday becoming so immersive that you can't tell them from reality sets the imagination on fire. What if this could be life? But most stories fall short. At the end of the day the protagonist hangs up his VR helmet and goes to have dinner with his mom and dad or other family and it becomes meaningless. It's like the story that ends because the main character woke up and nothing you read matters. There have been some books that explore the concept of the intersection of reality and total immersion VR. Enders Game is a classic. There were a few others that escape me but they exist, however, the cross between the game and reality is weak.So what if the game was real? The technology needed for total immersion VR is so advanced that by the time we reach that goal technology should have naturally evolved to include several items. You must have direct neural input. You simply can't have a total immersion (all senses and perfect presence) experience without this basic prerequisite. If you have direct neural access, you can probably do neat things like feed knowledge and skills directly to that person. You can undoubtedly do many horrible things as well. Muscles are controlled by the brain. If you control the brain why would you let the body just sit there and rot? A person that sits unmoving for 24 hours a day will have their body whither away just like a coma patient. However, if you control the brain you could control the muscles. On a basic level, this would be isometric impulses, working muscle group against muscle group to avoid atrophy. Taken to its logical conclusion you would be able to gain muscle mass and program muscle memory. The flip side is that you could remote control their body... but let's not go there. So what would people do if it were real? Well, they would probably limit and regulate it since the drawbacks are very obvious. Even if you look at the basic aspects of this you can see some negative possibilities. Look at the Sword Art Online anime. Personally, I think they missed the boat by putting a bomb in the VR helmet. Do you really need a bomb when you have direct access to the brain? So what kind of events would you need to have a situation where the obvious drawbacks haven't been explored? Maybe a society where the advancement of technology has so far outstripped the explorations of its applications that ignorance was truly bliss? Okay, so I had to put in an alien invasion to kickstart the premise, but that was just one of the possibilities.
