《Path of Salvation》Chapter 038: Card Collectors I

"There are rewards for this game?", Alpha and Franky asked in unision. Alpha had never been to one of those games while Franky had never collected the rewards he could have gotten. Liam had forgotten them all. They had at least four members with Liam and Emma but one of them was too weak to participate.

"You seriously didn't know? Fine then... I'll explain it once, okay?"

After a short lesson, the two of them finally grasped how these games work. It took a lot longer with Liam as he had to grasp the concept of Dream Catchers once again.

The game Franky had participated in was a Club Game. The point wasn't exactly being the best and standing at the top. The point was looking good in battle, surviving, and getting people excited for more or less a staged fight. However, it also was an Ace Game meaning that the last one standing would be rewarded handsomely. All Club Games are based on survival and showing your agression with style points as a bonus. The last time he partook in them it was the 3rd-ranked Dream Catcher, Durandal. The first time he had taken part in them it was Ryu, the 4th-ranked Dream Catcher, who had won.

Diamond Games were of elegance and beauty. Some were beauty contests while others were focused on art forms. The most significant one of them all would be figure skating with opera following as a close second. Regarded as a prestigious art nearly impossible for anyone within their profession to master, it rakes in lots of money as the richest Dream Catchers come together to finance it. Even Raven started attending those recently with Calamity and Festivia being the biggest donors.

Spade Games are known for their splendid selection of ways for one to change oneself and for a sense of community. With the biggest of them all being more of a fashion and recruitment show that present how Dream Catchers could be, people are allowed to see how could change without being challenged by society. Though underfunded, these games are usually just large communities that look out for each other.

Heart Games are usually the biggest events. As relatively fair team games, people get together to play tower defense, intelligence games, and much more. As the games range from duos to groups of ten, there was a large variety of them they could partake in.

Ace Games are hybrid games that always are about climbing to the top. The game Franky had partaken in was an Ace Club Game where the one at the top would be handsomely rewarded. They're also the ones that rake in the most money.

All of the game types supply them with their own currency. The one with the least value are Spadelings. Deemed nearly worthless, they constantly fall underneath the other currencies. Though they've been gaining more value lately, they still are far from gaining any value. After that follow the Clublings. Even if thrilling things like survival are quite interesting, they're far too detached to the average Dream Catcher. Most want a distraction away from the tiring life of a Dream Catcher. These games only serve as reminders and ways for rookies to grow stronger. After that follow Heartlings. There's no one that doesn't have at least one Heart Game they enjoy. Though through outside influence, Dialings remain as the most valuable but still quite fair as the only condition is learned skill with plenty of games one could cash in on. All these currencies can be exchanged for Acelings, a universal currency that can be used anywhere within the world of magic. They're distributed for partaking in Ace Games and for clearing commissions and bounties.

"That's all! I won't explain anything again because I kinda have to go and do something. Bye!", she snickered as Liam laid on the couch rather confused with Alpha and Hyperion arguing whether or not the rest should ever partake in those games. Prometheia followed Emma out of the door and left them to their little argument.

"But we can make the money we need to pay for everything!", Alpha argued.

"Sure but what about the shady people there? What will you do when they come after you, a person that can't even say no! And I can keep on paying for your expenses like I always did!", Franky countered. Though his arguments weren't quite strong, his worries were legitimate. It just takes Alpha shortly interacting with individuals like Calamity to get into a mess he can't deal with.

"Well... It's my choice! You can't just stop me!"

"I'll simply drag you out if I have to!"

The two of them couldn't come to an agreement yet Liam had one simple yet applicable answer.

"If you're so worried about him getting in trouble, why not always go together and make sure he doesn't interact much with these shady people you've met? Or just make clear what he's supposed to look out for since you seem like a professional in dealing with these people?", Liam said.

"You're not being sarcastic, right?", Franky said missing the point and the fact that Liam isn't capable of being sarcastic right now.

"We'll do it that way!", Alpha stated.

The next day, the five of them got together to discuss important matters when it comes to partaking in these games. The most important topics would be determining who else could take care of their city while they are absent and making sure that Prometheia can go. Hellfire alone may not be the greatest choice. With Demons becoming more erratic and far more persistent on stalking people and preying on other Demons, letting him handle all of them when two could pop up on opposite ends of the city is problematic. Nyx, Loriel, and Aqua volunteered to take care of the city while they're away.

"I'm familiar with Club Games. Maybe we should partake in those?", asked Franky. However, that idea was shot down quite quickly.

"You're the only one that would succeed in those. The rest of us are long range fighters and I fear that fighting against Dream Catchers is far more complex than dealing with Demons. The pay also isn't the greatest," said Emma. Their abilities to engage in close combat and the lack of pay were factors that made these games unappealing. They also can be time consuming if you make it far enough.

"A Dia Game? It would pay plenty, right?", offered Alpha.

"Sure, but do any of us really have enough talent to compete?", said Franky.

Prometheia chimed in despite refusing to partake in these games out of fear of being discovered as a Z. She claimed, "Emma is good at cosplaying. Maybe there is a section for that?"

"Absolutely not. I'm limiting that to the internet. I'd rather not be facing harsh criticism in person. Some of the guys taking pictures can be creeps sooo… No."

The only option is a Heart Game. They don't take up too much time and the pay is quite good. They're also a lot more fun and rather strategic. Their team synergy is quite good meaning that games of 3v3 are favorable. However, gathering a big random team of ten may cash in more Heartlings.

"Prometheia…Are you sure you don't want to go?", Alpha asked. "Aqua doesn't seem to like you at all."

Prometheia remained unsure but thought that maybe it is time to test the waters. No one likes Zs. She could risk it here by remaining alone and being killed by a Dream Catcher that didn't know her at all or risk getting killed by the hands of hundreds of people fully capable of vanquishing her. If she were to ask Alpha to protect her, he'd absolutely stay with her. But she couldn't do that and decided to remain here, alone.

"I'll be fine. There's nothing to worry about!"

As such they were on their way to the Heart Base wherein all Heart Games occur. The interior was massive and well decorated yet the people were a lot more casual than in Club Base. The entrance is just one massive walkway leading to a train station. Located within a massive tunnel that lead towards Heart Base, a Domain full of wonders, they decided to look around a bit.

"This place sure is vast, huh?", Franky said as it was completely different from Club Base. He wasn't expecting a massive terminal with ten rails. The timetable was rather simple and determined where which train went to instead of when they would arrive.

Many were queuing up for the Ten of Hearts. Seperated into three sections: Team 1, Team 2, and Observers, it made clear just how the teams work.

"Hey!", exclaimed a fellow Dream Catcher. A duo approached them about to ask them whether or not they wanna play with the two of them.

Franky, on the defensive, stepped forward asking, "What do you want?"

"Come on! No need to be so rude! Let's just have fun and relax, okay?"

One was a man that seemed to have recently entered adulthood while the other is woman just as old as he is. Rather casual, the two of them looked as if they were about to go on a jog. Standing in a button-up shirt while wearing shorts, he wondered whether or not the four of them knew how to partake in these games.

"You must be new here! If you're not registrated, head over to that booth over there and get your MPs, okay?", said the young man. Taller than Alpha, Liam, and Emma, and a little taller than Franky, he was a little intimidating but also quite friendly.

"MPs?", Alpha asked. Unlike Franky and Emma, Alpha and Liam had no Magia Profiles, something you need to partake in these games and generally allows for recognition in the world of magic.

"Magia Profiles… They're there to verify that you're Hyperion when you perform any sort of transaction in these bases or otherworldy shops. We'll wait for you here while the two of you get registrated, okay?", Emma said.

Paying no mind to the two strangers, Emma and Franky stared at each other thinking about their next course of actions while Alpha and Liam went off to get registrated.

The booth was a small walk in shop where they would take pictures of your face as a Dream Catcher and then draw blood to infuse with your MP cards. Taking only a minute to create these profiles and the cards, it took them only ten minutes as there was a rather long line. With Alpha registrated as Hyperion and Liam registrated as Chronos, the two finally have their MPs.

Upon returning to Emma and Franky, they realized that the two had struck a deal with the duo. With Emma introducing them as Akio and Reflecta, they wondered where they hailed from. Revealed to be hailing from USA, they were the first American Dream Catchers they've ever met. For now, they decided that the Ten of Hearts was the most desireable course for them as it paid quite well even for the losing team.

Entering the Team 2 carriage, they were met by just one Dream Catcher, one Franky had met before. A hologram displayed that only one lone person was in there.

"OH! It's you!", said Leo. This time he was alone. Sylvia had gone missing while Schmidt and Callypso were nowhere to be found.

"Leo? What happened to Schmidt and Callypso?", Franky asked wondering where his group of friends had gone.

Leo pulled out one Devil Seed and cheerfully asked, "What do you think this is?"

Franky could just tell that those were two Devil Seeds.

"This one is Schmidt. Callypso had killed himself after this revelation. Sylvia has disappeared but you probably already know that considering how you didn't bother asking for her well-being…"

Though this little conversation was dreadful, Leo kept it as short as possible and cut them off right there.

"Well… We're not here for them. We're here for the games! Let's have fun, okay?"

The inside of this wagon was rather spatious for something that housed just ten seats. Futuristic grays and blues made this bizarre wagon rather dull. Still, it was a sight to behold to someone like Liam. Awaiting more players they were given time to strategize and discuss how they should proceed starting off with introducing themselves to everyone else. Before that could start, three more Dream Catchers entered the wagon.

"You're not waiting for someone else, right?", said one of the girls entering. Accompanied by a matching twin, she asked for permission to partake in this game. The two of them were a duo that always travelled together.

"Come on in! We're not awaiting anyone else," said Leo.

The twins and the third girl entered excusing herself before taking a seat. The doors closed and allowed them some time to think for themself. Since each side housed five seats, the gang was seated next to Leo on the left while the two duos and the lone stranger were seated on the right. A table came into being right between them with a red button for each person to push when they're ready.

"Let's start off with introductions!", said Hyperion already starting to lead the team. "I'm Hyperion. I use pure light magic and a sniper rifle to fight in battle. Nice to meet you."

Counterclockwise they introduced themself one by one.

"King. Longswords." King had adjusted his outfit a little. Instead of seeming like a copy of Hyperion's, he was more himself. His blue coat had changed to a white shirt with tons of golden musical notes instead on top of a staff that replaced the G-Clefs. His golden belt remains golden but the sheaths for his longswords were now golden with a blue line spiraling to the tip. The white cape has turned lightblue with silver borders and around his neck was a black choker with a golden G-Clef on top.

"Well hello… I'm Sugar. Flame arrows and baked weapons are kind of my thing." A beret, a bishop sweater, a frilled miniskirt, leggings, and knee high boots… Certainly not the best outfit for combat, it surely had its use in battle. Going for something she deemed “french”, she decided to wear this combination of clothes. Her beret brown, her bishop sweater white, her miniskirt black, her boots black and her leggins beige… she decided to not pull too many liberties when it came to colors.

"Chronos. Stopping time," Liam said mimicking Franky.

"Mine's Leo! Close range weapons made of fire! It's nice meeting such a new lively bunch!" He wore an open red-sleeved carrigan. Underneath that was an open black button-up shirt with lei flower patterns on it. Hot pink trousers, and beige sandals made for a more casual and careless look. A floppy hat attached to him by a strap around his neck was placed on his back. Carrying a massive greatsword, he made for an easy-going and intimidating ally.

"Reflecta and-"

"Akio! Mirrors and shadows!" Reflecta was cut short and pouted as Akio poked her cheeks.

"I'm-", stammered the lone rather short girl. "I'm Gertrude. Nice to meet you."

Getrude had a dark green bob cut with bangs covering one eye. Covering her already covered eye with an eyepatch, she carried a pair of gardening scissors and a spear as weapons. Her white puffy skirt was more akin to a cloud with a green veil on top. Earthy brown accessories like keychains of cartoon characters and animals were small details she added to her white corsett. She also wore a green sleeveless jacket and gardening gloves. Long vanilla socks and black garden boots… she definitely looked like the youngest among the bunch.

"We're Melody-"

"-and Rhythm! We use our imagination." The two completed their sentences and seemed like a duo that always is in sync. Sticking to a more poppy style, the two of them stood out a lot. Melody had long, straight, and blond hair with pink ends while Rythm had blond pigtails with white ends. The two wore the same uniform. Wearing layered and ruffled skirts, a plain shirt, black boots, and two sets of chains around their waist, the only difference were the inverted colors, their faceshape, and their eye colors.

Melody's shirt was white with a pink F-Clef on the back. Her skirt was a miniskirt that had three layers going by pink-white-pink. The black boots on her had a golden G-Clef on each shoe.

Rythm's shirt was pink instead of white and had a white G-Clef on the back. Three layered white-pink-white longskirt, and black boots with a golden F-Clef on them…

The ten of them were a lively bunch and had to discuss how they should proceed and remain at the top in battle. Hyperion started leading the ten of them despite knowing so little about leadership. With no one else to step up as a leader, he had to take care. of that position.

"First off: How does this game work?", he asked.

Melody and Rythm shrugged. Gertrude looked away.

Reflecta replied, "Capture the flag... Simple enough right. The only thing I should add is the fact that this game is a little more over the top than a simple child's game."

"Yeah!", Leo said. "We'll be within a deserted city and will have to protect our flag. If it sustains any damage, the rival team will gain a point. The game ends when the rival team captures your flag and gets it into their half of the desolate city."

"And-", Gertrude added. "And there are two skyscrapers. One is ours with the flag at the top. The other skyscraper is at the opposite end with their flag at their top. Players will respawn with their magic, spiritual power, and natural power set to max until the game is over. Our powers also get scaled down and adjusted to make for a fair game."

"There also are traps we can lay out before the beginning of the games and there should be underground tunnels for us to sneak around in. Before the games begin we'll get an hour of time to make up strategies and get ready," said Rhythm. She was awfully calm for someone whose looks give off loud and energetic.

Leo pushed his red button signaling that he's ready. Ear plugs came into being as soon as he did tailormade for him.

The others followed suit pushing their buttons one after another with Hyperion as the last person to push a button. Finally, they could put their eyes on the battlefield as they found themself in the middle of it. Easy to spot are their respective headquarters and the opportunity to explore a little was given as they had to walk towards the skyscrapers themself.

"Let's go!"
