《Path of Salvation》Chapter 017: Delusions

In front of her stood just one person, the one who's responsible for the destruction of this city. Her crimson eyes and her gray and messy bob cut instantly stood out. Seemingly furious as Elena wouldn't submit to her delusions, she stared Elena down. Wearing a red asymmetrical dress, red gauntlets, red greaves, red sabatons, and a red breastplate with the same black and veiny pattern, she pointed her left palm at Elena while her right fist sat on her hip facing upwards. Embedded into her breastplate was a black gem with an ominous aura that seemed to contain the souls of an unspeakable amount of people. "I'm the Phantom of Sentience. I'm sorry for shrouding this barrier with mystery but those were her orders. I cannot let you live as another one of my orders which is why-", she said as she gently caressed the gem within her breastplate. Her monotone voice irritated Elena to the point that she had to cut Sentience off. "Why would you follow these orders?! You've killed so many just because you've been ordered to?", she demanded to know but was met with no concrete answer. "I'm sorry but this is necessary. It's either us or them. You probably understand, don't you?" Mocking Sentience, she exclaimed, "You're far too hollow and barely portray any personality traits! Unlike you, I didn't kill anyone. I just temporarily, as you could say, shut them down!" "I see, but none of that matters. Let's get this over with."
Quickly, she changed her stance and was ready to duke it out with Elena. Suddenly, she closed in at tremendous speed and attempted to get Elena with a right hook only to have her first move be blocked by the lance. Considering that this lance is made of cloth, it was a lot more flexible meaning that there was a lot more she could do. Swinging the handle like a whip she pushed her target away and reassembled it to pierce through the crystal but missed. Instead of hitting anyone, she just hit the house right next to them breaking through the wall. "So, she'll likely be using illusions to make me question whether or not I hit her and to evade attacks," she thought as she barely evaded the punch aimed at her and holding onto her wrist. In a fraction of a second, Elena pulls Sentience and lifts her into the air as she uses her lance to attack. As expected, Sentience could avoid being hit using her other arm to spin herself away from the trajectory of the lance by pushing herself away through the use of Elena's head. Upon landing, with both hands on Elena, she tried to shove her into a wall only to be met with resistance. An air barrier was keeping her away and pushed her back before Elena turned to her as a means to attack with her lance once again. Of course, she avoided that as well but it stopped short of her throat and fired an air bubble at her that made her cough. Without hesitating Elena quickly aimed at the gem again to miss again because of space in between them. Ramming her lance into the ground while having a few threads attached to her fingertips and the lance, she jumped onto, propelled herself a little upwards, and forwards to attack from above. Retracting the threads, she pulls in her lance and aims at Sentience. Again, Sentience evades the attack as the earth crumbled beneath their feet through the sheer strength of Elena's thrust. Straight-faced, Sentience simply kicked the lance away with her left leg making Elena let go of the lance leaving her defenseless. With a punch, she was propelled backward by Sentience and had to realize that in terms of physical strength and spiritual power. Breaking her ribs with a simple punch coated in seemingly invisible spiritual power, she was showcased how inferior she is. It took a considerate amount of magic to use threads to fully recover as she rushed in ignoring her pain screaming at the top of her lungs. "Getting desperate aren't we?", Sentience asked. Before she could deliver another fatal blow, Elena, pulled at the threads connecting her and her lance. With an attack Sentience didn't expect, she was pierced with the lance that tore a hole into her. A punch right next to the spot of the injury-enforced by spiritual power and an air blow forced even more pain into her body and more blood to gash out. Before she could deliver another blow, a greatsword descends from the skies making her back off. The sword downsizes to the point of being nonexistent and completely vanishes as Sentience starts to recover. Pulling out the lance, she quickly recovers while still having a deadpan face. "I see... I guess I'll have to give a little more thought to it!", she said slightly aggravated.

A longsword phases into existence as if it was forged by air but it was the great forgery between her own void powers and massive amounts of spiritual power that allowed for such quick crafting. "I copied this from one of the previous owners of the Authority of Sentience. I can counter any kind of weapon with his memories," she claimed. "Is that supposed to scare me? I'm well aware of your mind tricks! As soon as I just slightly put my guard down, you'll try to destroy what is left of my mental defenses!", she reminded herself loudly. Sentience scoffed and mockingly told her, "I guess this is why you're such a manipulative person. Quick to aggravate others just to have a reason to put them down and manipulate them into doing what you want!" Awaiting the first move of one another they stare each other down for what seems to be an eternity even though only seconds had passed. Knowing that the one that starts this battle is the one with less patience and less endurance in terms of mental fortitude, this could drag on forever until something pierced through Sentience's shoulder and clashed with the ground. Quickly, Elena moved in and attempted to attack once again but was countered by the longsword within Sentience's right hand. The gunshot came from Phantom but it's not known where exactly it came from. As such, this battle lies within Elena's favor with a sniper whose location is unknown. Another gunshot she could barely evade in time tried to make her way through her. Losing her balance, she trips over rubble while Elena is aiming at her head. Before she could deliver a decisive blow, however, something emerged from within Sentience. A blue gas with lights within that imitates stars engulf the entire area like another cosmic anomaly that would fully engulf the city within a few seconds but gathered into a small orb that would ascend above the city to hide within the clouds. "What did you-", Elena uttered but was interrupted by Sentience. Attacking from above with a plunge attack Elena was short of being taken out by Sentience. Elena, dropping her lance in a moment of panic and her mental barrier, was susceptible to her attacks and shortly after, was knocked out by Sentience. However, she fell for Elena's tricks once again meaning that the lance has pierced Sentience once again. This time it reached into her heart meaning that it should have been a fatal injury but that was an illusion she could create because Elena had her guard down. Only being able to slightly alter the course, it was her leg instead of her heart. With ease, she pulled out the lance and quickly regenerated as Elena already is back on her feet. "It's always the same expression! You lack emotion and care for others because you are a monster that murdered a city's worth of people and you still refuse to tell us what went down!", Elena yelled as bait. "I can only tell you that I have to follow these orders or she'll revoke my rights to my limited freedom. You should know what it is like to be in a position where going against others that stand above you may cost you and you're acting according to that position. So do I," she lamented as she threw the lance toward her but not in a way to harm Elena. "I can only fight and do as I was told. I have no other option and never will. What she did... No! What we did to this city is unforgivable but worth it. I'm sorry!" As such their battle continues with another shot that came out of nowhere from Phantom. His accuracy seems to be suffering because something seems to be affecting him. The attacks on the mind Sentience has been performing likely are the cause of it. Considering how effective Elenas attacks have been so far, she decides to go for a weapon that not only pierces but also cuts. Her lance reshapes into a massive polearm with a blade long enough to cut through her opponent. Sentience closes the gap between them as a means to evade another projectile. With a swift attack, she dents the breastplate Sentience is wearing. With a lack of strength, she only has magic and natural power within her arsenal that could potentially affect her opponent. With a lack of expertise in magic, she could only turn herself into strings at best but hadn't reached a stage where she could turn objects into her weapons meaning that, if she even gets a chance at beheading her, it likely won't come. Her spiritual power is inferior as she already is trying to do her best to block out mental attacks and even then a few of them slip past her mental barriers. With all these factors, she only has the option to retreat for now while being fully aware of everything around her for which she has set up threads to flee into. As she attempts to flee, all of them are cut by a force she couldn't detect before. It emanated from Sentience herself and was a rather sinister power. "Many aren't aware of even the fundamentals of spiritual power. Most don't know that they do have a soul and those that are, are unaware of all the problems that come with it. To turn an object you're not familiar with into your weapon of choice, you'll go through several steps multiple times over. First is leaking your spiritual power into the object which many already struggle with. The second is using your spiritual power to break down its structure. The third is reshaping the object. It seems simple but are hard tasks most can't even grasp, including you. Unless you learn how to do that, you may as well give up and surrender." Showing no signs of interest in what Sentience is trying to explain to her, she jumps into the air and leaps backward. After that, she takes the battle to the skies unaware that Sentience could fly as well. Discovering the reason as to why she can fly may help Elena in discovering how to beat her and how to further improve in battle.

A black greatsword their size forms midair Sentiences uses to surf on-air and towards Elena which granted her extra speed. As she is trying to balance herself on her greatsword, daggers from within her vicinity are aimed at Elena. While none of the first waves does hit Elena, she, while facing Sentience, crashes as the massive greatswords within the city still are around. Before she could hit the ground or be hit by another wave of swords, she flies along the streets not looking back within an air sphere that could deflect attacks but lacks speed as her focus lies keeping the sphere up through spinning. This way Sentience could catch up and use another weapon. This time, it is a spear rotating around its own axis she seems to view as the best choice to counter Elena's sphere. With a dark red aura surrounding it, it quickly picks up in speed breaching the sphere and essentially stopping Elena while still being deflected resulting in Elena only falling for a fraction of a second and riding the wind before she could land. Denting the street with the amount of air she has released, she heads towards the city center to at least lift the barrier. Agitated, Sentience used the massive greatswords beneath them to stop Elena by ramming her. Meanwhile, something else pierced her heart. Using this small opening, Elena herself had created a sword that mimics Sentience's ones to attempt to harm Elena. "You probably can hear what I'm saying as the Authority of Sentience itself even when we're flying at such speeds! You're just a spirit that can follow orders!", Elena confirmed meaning that Sentience herself has no true physical form but rather illusions she utilizes to converse with others and affect them. However, Elena is proven wrong as she bleeds like any other person even when her chest is pierced. In a moment of weakness, she acts irrationally by loosening her grip on the barrier that envelops the city. The skies slowly clear even if only for a few seconds but with the anger of Sentience they darken again as another greatsword ascends. Pulling out the sword within her while the weapons that she had created faded away, she touches the massive black greatsword only to vanish within before Elena could stop her. That alone wasn't enough to kill her but it forced her into using alternatives. All the greatswords that pierced the city ascends and chase after Elena. "How exactly do I stop her when she can keep herself safe within these things! I have to-", she thought but it wasn't her that they were targeting. They formed a wall of rotating greatswords around the innermost layer, the heart of the city of Munich. Approaching the wall and trying to navigate through them without having herself be whacked out of the skies, she attempts to navigate through them and stop their momentum at the same time but even then, she could only barely making it out in time without being violently flung around. The swords themself seemed to react to her presence as hands emerged and the cries of people could be heard echoing through her mind. Slowly, a malformed version of toddlers, children, and adults could be seen trying to reach her as they formed from a black and gooey substance. Shortly after they took flight. With Sentience gone, her focus has shifted to finding Phantom as these creatures aren't much of a threat when they're blindly following the orders of Sentience without using any plans as they lack the consciousness that allows them to do so.
Surprisingly, these monsters are far stronger than she had expected. Several of them lacked the spiritual strength to maintain their form. As such, they melted and turned into several gooey hands that were reaching out for Elena. One of them was particularly odd, almost as if it didn't belong to this world. It had a rather strange form as it only glowed like a plasma ball. Constantly changing in form so that it could take on one acceptable to its standards. The gooey arms reaching out to Elena slowly were pulled back towards the strange being and accumulated into one massive malformed monster. Finally, it took the shape of a rather horrifying creature. While based on the human body, it peaked at twenty meters in height. Its arms were exceptionally long while its legs were shorter than they should be. A cancerous bubbly mass fused the upper half of its body as its face was barely visible with the abnormal head-to-body ratio. To her surprise, the being was quick and nearly got a hold of Elena. She jumped just in time to evade the attack but several arms stretched out from its thin stretchy layer that supposedly resembles skin. Bursting through the layer, they get ahold of Elena's leg and pull her in. Trying to pull herself away, she couldn't break free as if those arms had become one with her. By detaching her leg and creating a new one while her lance was strapped in on her back, she witnessed what the being is doing to her leg. Like some kind of acid, it dissolved her leg. Looking at the trail it leaves behind while strutting after Elena, she could see how it dealt damage to buildings, the pavement, and roads. Nothing would escape its slimy hands and would eventually be swallowed by it. However, it is shrinking indicating that this may be close to pure dark magic that contains the souls of hundreds of thousands of souls. Another monster emerged beneath her. It also resembled a human but it only consisted of a bloblike torso, long and muscular arms, and no head. It wasn't the only one that would emerge from the ground uprooting houses. It was one of many that would try to devour her and add her to the collection of suffering souls Sentience holds within her possession. By surprise, she was caught off-guard by a sphere with limbs sprouting from it while creating a sphere of threads composed of all her magic, natural power, and spiritual power. Before she could act, she fell unconscious to another one of Sentiences attacks falling asleep for now.
