CHAPTER 4 - Put Em Up

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

REYNARD MANSION, FOUNTAIN

[AMBROSE]

Finishing my conversation with Javier, I can’t shake the feeling I missed something vitally important. It’s a skill I have relied on for many jobs and it has never steered me wrong. Could it be I actually do know where the deed is.?..... No that’s impossible, I would have picked up on it by now. Then what is it?

“ARRGH, SO ANNOYING, NOTHING ABOUT THIS JOB HAS GONE RIGHT!”

Kicking the door in anger I release my built up stress. Taking out a cigarette, I light and smoke it blowing out a perfect ring. After smoking for 5 minutes, I get the prearranged “engaging” text from Javier on a burner phone.

‘SHOWTIME! it’s the final act were almost finished’

Is my only thought as I stub the cigarette, making sure it’s out I slam the front door after getting inside. After heading to the closet underneath the stairs on the right, I enter the security room and turned on my mike.

“ALL STATIONS REPORT!”

Several voices reply immediately to the command in order.

“ALPHA 1 FRONT GATE, ALL CLEAR”

“ALPHA 2 BACK GATE, ALL CLEAR”

“ALPHA 3 WEST GATE, ALL CLEAR”

“ALPHA 4 EAST GATE, ALL C…. WHAT THE?! THERE IS AN INTRUDER ON THE PREMISES! ”

“ALPHA 4 REPEAT YOUR TRANSMISSION”

“ I REPEAT, THERE IS AN INTRUDER ON THE PREMISES!”

As the system was programmed, once a guard repeated those words, it automatically tripped the alarm which repeated those words on the speakers, located throughout the home.

“CONFIRMED SECURING PRINCIPAL NOW”

‘Well that was easy, now time to go secure our little principal’

SPARE BEDROOM, 2ND FLOOR

[Sebastian]

“Alright kid, this is what I want you to do"

His uncle answered after a momentary pause.

“Dial 911 right after we are finished talking, and when you get through change it into a conference call, can you do that? Okay, what toys are nearby in the house? Name them for me quickly, your security guard will be looking for you soon.”

Recalling all the toys were located in his room next door, Sebastian gave Oliver quick rundown. It was very short considering Sebastian’s only interest currently was baseball, where he played as a pitcher. The toys that were currently in his room was a wooden baseball bat, 2 baseballs, a pitcher’s mitt, a 5 pound barbell, and a leather jump rope.

“Okay we can work with that, go get them all except the mitt and bring it to the spare bedroom”

His Uncle replied after listening to his list. Sebastian silently moved across the hall, quickly picked up each item, and returned to Ambrose’s room. With the task he was given complete, he waited for his next job tensely.

“Now, listen very carefully kid, I want you to wrap the jump rope and tie it on the end of the barbell, leaving just enough rope for you to hold it. Next, make sure to put the baseballs in your pants pockets so they are easy to reach. Finally, I want you to place the bat inside the room close by for use later on.”

After following all his instructions I hear the front door slam, which I used to always let me know when Ambrose came inside.

“He just came in”

I cut in, just as Uncle Oliver is about to say something else, he doesn't stop talking despite the interruption.

“Alright, I’ve given everything you need to get through this. When he comes upstairs shouting for you to head to the panic room, I want you instead to throw the baseball at him, if you miss don’t worry, that’s what the 2nd baseball is for. Once you hit him, grab the bat and knock him unconscious. With the time it should take for the second guy to reach you on the second floor. You should try to tie up your first kidnapper, using the barbell as a base to tie his arms behind him. If events occur as I just described them, start over and repeat on the second intruder the same way. By that time, hopefully the police would have arrived by then.”

The sad part of the story is, the situation didn’t end exactly as he described. When I dialed 911 and told the operator I believed was about to be kidnapped, She treated me like a scared kid until I connected our call to Uncle Oliver. Once he reassured her I wasn't freaking out, she immediately told me hide in a safe location, the police would be there momentarily.

Uncle Oliver put a stop to that immediately.

"The head of security is the organizer of the attempt, where do you expect Sebastian to hide???" Oliver said incredulously.

The argument went no further, because a prearranged alarm could be heard outside.

THERE IS AN INTRUDER ON THE PREMISES!

Upon hearing the expected alarm, I put the cell phone down on the desk next to me facing the door and quickly entered my room, placing myself on the bed to keep the appearance of watching T.V.

Moments later as Uncle Oliver predicted, Ambrose ran upstairs slamming open the door to my room. When his eyes fell on me supposedly watching T.V. a malicious smirk was momentarily visible before he began to sell his role as a head of security.

“ARE YOU DEAF!? THERE IS A INTRUDER, GET YOUR ASS TO THE PANIC ROOM!

He shouted, convincingly giving the impression he is only doing his job. Following the scenario Uncle Oliver gave me, I quickly move ahead of him and enter the spare bedroom first. Turning around as I entered the room, I quickly confirm the cell phone is where I left it still on the conference call. As Ambrose came to step through the door he saw me standing in the middle of the room.

“What are you doing? have you forgotten what to do you stupid kid?!

He shouted standing in the doorway while keeping his attention focused in the hall. Without answering I immediately wind up with my right hand, aim and throw the first baseball at his head.

{BAM!}

“AUUUGGGHHH!”

The sound of impact was music to my ears, as Ambrose dropped to the floor screaming, bending down on a knee as he held his right eye.

“YOU LITTLE SHIT! I WAS GOING TO WAIT UNTIL I KIDNAPPED YOU TO TEACH YOU SOME MANNERS, BUT NOW’S A GOOD A TIME AS ANY! ”

He screamed with blood dripping down his face.

“Hmm, I guess that hurts quite a bit, Well, too damn bad you shouldn’t be trying to kidnap a kid!”

{WHAM!}

“F-Fff (spit)--FUCK!”

Just to be safe the second baseball is thrown as well, this one hit’s him in the chest, the impact forced a wad of blood and spit to fly from his mouth which only seemed to further infuriate him as he hunches over in pain.

‘Ah, that’s better, I’ve wanted to do that for a long time’

Even with all the noise made there wasn’t a soul in sight. Uncle Oliver and the operator are arguing with each other, while at the same time worriedly asking what going on. Without answering them, I walk over, picking up the bat confident he no longer has the energy to fight back. Unfortunately… for me this turned out not to be true.

{CRACK!} {BAM!}

{grunt} ”argh” “UGGH” {WHEEZE!}

Simultaneous hits are exchanged at the moment of impact, when I swung the bat at his head, Ambrose rose off his knee placing his left elbow in the way to take the hit, while at the same time punching me in the stomach.

I stagger backwards in pain, dry heaving, trying to force oxygen to my air deprived lungs. I desperately grasp the bat behind my right leg,with my right hand, knowing it’s the only thing standing in his way. In the seconds it took me to recover and breathe properly, he is already heading my way. Ambrose shakes his left arm out while wiping his puffy right eye with his hand, as he walks towards me with a pained expression. His arm has a huge black bleeding mark with the outline of a bat visible for the world to see.

“I knew something was wrong after I hung up, but I just couldn’t figure out what. You were outside behind me somewhere listening to my conversation, weren’t you ya LITTLE SHIT!”

{WHAM!} {THUD}

“UNnngggh”

A right hook found it’s way to my face, slamming me against the wall, the pain in my head is constant reminder of the difference between us, just from those two hits.

Just as he releases another right punch aimed at my chest, I desperately drag my right arm across my face, this places the bat right in front of his fist.

{BASH!} {thud}

“AAAAGGGGHHHH!”

Ambrose’s fist crashes into the bat forcing him backwards, while slamming me once again into the wall albeit with a lot less strength. His scream vibrates through the room, as he staggers backwards grasping his right hand in agony. Knowing I wouldn’t get this chance again, with my body screaming at me, I quickly swing the bat with all the strength I can muster in my numb arm at front of his left kneecap. The bat lands with uncanny timing just as Ambrose takes another step backwards .

{WHAP!} “Aaaugg…...” {CRASH!}

He is barely able whimper, as his body crumples to the floor with his leg unable to hold his weight. Upon closer inspection you can see it is bent at an irregular angle. Not taking any chances, after being overconfident before, once again I swing the bat with two hands at his head to shut him up.

Two good hits to the noggin knocks him out, though one was all I really needed, the second was just plain revenge.

“Ugggh!”

I grip my arm as I feel a sharp pain in my right arm by this point, Upon taking a closer look at it, I see a splinter has broken off the bat and stabbed the palm of my hand with the end sticking out.

{Tap-Tap}

I drop the bat as the pain rapidly becomes worse, even though it hurts and I should leave it in, I drag the splinter out.

It was no longer possible to hold the barbell and tie around it, so I improvised. Though it took me a while with the residual pain I felt in my hand, it was child’s play tying up Ambrose’s hands and feet together with the jump rope and dragging him out of sight of the open door.

After completing my task, and grabbing the barbell, I drop to the floor by the door.

“Haaa… haaaa….haaaaa. I.. dont think.. I can do this… a second.. time”

I slowly reply answering the two people hysterically yelling at the same time. At that moment the sounds of wailing sirens can be heard as 4 responding officers finally reach my home.

‘THANK GOD’

With the extra man power available Ambrose’s associate Javier was quickly cornered by the back gate and captured. The same thing happened down the street, with the police detaining their driver Sara as a precaution, taking in anyone nearby while they unaware of who was involved in the brazen attempt.

Letting the operator and Uncle Oliver know they had arrived, I promptly emotionally crashed as all the fear & pain I pushed away came rushing back with a force. I could faintly hear my uncle voice as if he was far away.

“You did good kid, you did good”

My parents came home unprepared for the massive welcoming committee of cop cars and ambulances that was in their driveway. As I sat in a ambulance, with a cast on my arm, wrapped in a blanket going still in shock, my parents finally spot me and ran in my direction. After experiencing this frightening attempt, and fighting for my life, I made myself a promise:

‘This will NEVER! Happen again, I will be better equipped to protect myself ….. next time’
