《Powerless Hero》Chapter 16: Broken Bonds

Cole had warned the group about Vera and the twins. They had agreed that Vera would not be allowed to hang out with any of them. One day Vera approached Cole and he was oblivious to her presence.
“Hey Cole... we need to talk. I need to-“
“Why should I trust you?”
“What?”
“I heard you talking with Kara and Sara about tearing us apart.”
“I’m glad you did. Please I came to you for help. Kara and Sara are-“ Suddenly she clutched her chest. She took a deep breath while still holding her chest. “They’re c- ahhh” She collapsed to the ground.
“Quit the act Vera. You lost our trust. You lost my trust.” He turned and started to walk away.
“Cole wait! You don’t understand! I don’t to hurt anyone. The twins are- ahhahh” She began to cry.
Cole continued walking. Convinced that this was all an act. Vera was trying to gain trust again but Cole wasn’t stupid enough to let her back in.
“C-Cole please!! Cole! COLE!!” He was gone. She began to whisper to herself. “Please save me.” Blood began to slowly seep out of her eyes.
“Well it seems you were too careless Vera.” Kara said walking over to the limp girl.
“You failed to do what we ask. Now you’re gonna pay for it.” Sara came out from behind Kara.
“I don’t care. I never wanted to help you two. Just kill me you monst-“ Vera went into a coughing fit. More blood flinging out of her mouth, nose, and eyes.
“It seems you’ve run out of your usefulness. You won’t last long.” Kara mocked.
“We don’t really need you anyway. We have another plan to take them apart.” Sara gave a sly evil smile. The twins walked off and away from the dying girl.
The twins came up next to Cole and both of them bumped into him. “Oops sorry Cole. We weren’t really watching where we were going.” Kara apologized.
“We have air heads so we weren’t paying attention.” Sara made an excuse. Cole ignored them and continued to watch out of the window towards Elias. The twins soon ran into every single member of that friend group except Elias because they couldn't find him
When Elias was done training he went and found the others and they together decided that the roof would be a good place to hang out for the day. The group was leaning on the railing. Elias and Becca standing next to each other. Georgia and Aaron standing next to each other on the opposite side of the railing. Cole stood alone in the middle of the two couples.
He often found his thoughts drifting to Vera. What if she wasn’t giving an act? What if she really was trying to inform Cole about something important? What if she really wanted to be friends? He quickly shook those thoughts out of his head. It was too late for him to try and reconsider her recent actions. She made her decisions and now she will need to live with them.

Then suddenly they all heard the door leading to the stairwell open up and the twins walked out with Kara in the lead. Everyone turned to face the twins.
“You won’t be able beat us. Your little plan using Vera has already been discovered.” Cole confronted.
“Oh poor Cole. You really think we relied on her that much?” Kara shot back.
“We’ve already won.” Sara boasted.
“You won’t get the chance.” Cole sprung into action condensing the energy around him into his hands as he prepared to unleash a lightning bolt. Becca’s hands erupted in fire and Elias, Georgia, and Aaron all brought up their fists to fight. They had the twins surrounded.
“Sara. Do it.” Kara commanded.
Suddenly, everyone felt stiff. Sara held her hands up and lowered her arms to cause the abilities of the others to be dispelled as their hands were forced to their sides. All of them except for Elias. Elias leaped forward with his fist already quickly approaching Sara.
Sara was unable to move in time and she was knocked onto the ground losing her control over the others. Aaron took this moment to turn into gas before Sara could refreeze them. Sara stood up as quickly as she was knocked down and put her hands up again freezing everyone back into place including Elias.
Aaron was still in his gas form and could move as he flew towards Sara. Kara suddenly stuck out her arm with an open hand and bent her fingers slightly. Aaron came back out of his form clutching his chest as he collapsed onto the ground. Kara dropped her arm when Sara regained her control over him.
Cole recognized the way Aaron had collapsed. He realized that Vera wasn’t acting about the pain at all. Her life was in danger and he could feel it.
“It looks like we’ve already won Cole.” None of you can move because Sara has all of you under her grasp.” Kara mocked.
“We tried to warn you that you wouldn’t win.” Sara remarked with an evil smile.
“Oh poor Elias. You were born with no power and yet you wanted to be a hero. How unfortunate that there will not be an underdog story for you.” Kara mocked. Elias refused to respond.
“Now now Becca. You have such an amazing power but you decided to waste it on a nobody. You could have joined us in ruling the world.” Sara mocked her as well. Becca didn’t even acknowledge her.
“Aaron you have such a unique ability but your ability makes my twins power worthless. We couldn’t let you stay alive.” Aaron rolled his eyes.
“Georgia such an impressive immortality ability. I mean you can’t even die unless it’s by natural causes. We will just keep you in captivity until you can no longer function.” Georgia said nothing.
“Poor Cole. You trusted Vera. You let your heart connect with her. Her heart even connected back but we just couldn’t allow that to go any further. Vera is dead Cole, and you left her behind.”

“Well at least I’m dying with some true friends. All you two have is each other. You’re all alone. You won’t make it through this world with just each other. The best hero in the world could squash you like ants.” Cole shot back.
“What’s your point?” Kara asked.
“You are nothing. You are so low that you have to take control and rule over other people to feel powerful. Such a waste of oxygen is all you are.”
“Shut it.” Kara lifted her hand with an open palm threatening to end his life.
“You’re so pathetic. Sara’s ability is what actually controls people. You’re only good for killing while Sara has an army. Soon you will be the one following her orders.”
“DIE!” Kara began to squeeze her hand shut. Cole could immediately feel a pain in his chest. A tightness and hard time breathing soon came next. Blood started to form in his eyes as her fist began to close tighter. Then suddenly she froze.
“Leave my friends ALONE!” Vera’s voice came from behind the twins. She was leaning on the doorway with one arm stretched out towards Kara. Blood was still streaming out of her eyes and blood was still coming out of her nose.
Sara was slightly shaken by the sudden sight of Vera but tried to hide it in her arrogance. “Careful Vera. You wouldn’t want Cole to die now would you?” Sara manipulated Becca’s arms to create fire and forced her over to Cole. Suddenly Sara also became frozen in place. Her hold on everyone else becoming Null.
Vera stood leaning against the door shaking violently as both of her arms were over stretched in front of her. She wasn’t able to hold them very long. Sara soon regained control of her body and soon after Kara did. Sara quickly regained her hold over the others.
Vera collapsed. She wasn’t moving. She was gone. “VERA!!” Cole shouted. “DON’T WORRY VERA! EVERYTHING WILL BE ALRIGHT!” Everyone knew he didn’t believe it. They had lost.
Kara continued to hold her hand up again facing Cole. However, before she could close her fist Sara screamed in pain.
Coming out of Sara’s stomach were two very sharp glowing red blades. Behind her was an black armored figure with glowing red eyes. The red blades suddenly disappeared and Sara collapsed.
The armored figure had a glowing red line that went around the face of the helmet. Another red line going down the neck and surging into a glowing red crystal shaped icon on his chest. From the chest both of the shoulders had a glowing red line that went down to the elbow then wrapped around to the forearm and stoped at the end of the wrist. Each knuckle had a glowing red circle. Also coming from the chest were two glowing red lines rushing down the abdomen and splitting at the hips. Running down to the knees then once again wrapping around until reaching the ankle. The bottom of the boots emitting a red glow as well.
Kara placed her hand on the armored figure and didn’t hesitate to squeeze her hand into a fist. The figure didn’t even flinch. Kara seeing that this didn’t work moved to deliver a kick to the chest. In an instant the figure moved behind her already it’s fist was reared back. Kara turned to see the fist quickly approaching her. But it seemed to take minutes. She felt like time was slowed. She realized she was staring Death right in the face. And Death had won.
The figure soon left the area just as quickly as it appeared. Sara laid lifeless with two burn marks coming through her back piercing her spine and coming through the stomach. Kara also shared a similar fate. Her face mashed in like a potato as she laid against the railing.
Cole ran over to Vera. She wasn’t breathing. There wasn’t even a heartbeat. Cole turned her so she laid on her back. He enveloped his hands in electricity and pressed down on Vera. Her body shook with the electricity going through her. Becca ran over and began to push air into her lungs. Cole began to do chest compressions stopping at thirty so Becca could push air into her lungs twice.
Cole electrified her once again after about two minutes and the cycle started again. As Cole was preparing to do the third shock, Vera began to cough. Her eyes shot open and she turned to her side and threw up. Blood and whatever else it was she had for lunch had came up. Cole rested his hand on her shoulder and let her continue to heave and throw up.
After a little she had calmed down and she looked around. Her eyes welled up with tears as she remembered what she was supposed to do to her friends. “I’m so sorry. I don’t want to destroy your fri-“
“We know Vera. If it wasn’t for you I don’t think we would have survived long enough for our rescuer.” Becca said forgiving her already. “You can hang out with us anytime.”
Eventually the staff of the school had made it up to the roof. Vera was taken to the infirmary and the two corpses of Kara and Sara were cleaned up. The group was questioned and each of them told what had happened and about the armored figure that had came to their rescue. At mention of the armored figure the staff froze and the questioning was instantly over.
The principle stood up in his office looking out of the window. “So... The Particle has returned to this dimension. Is he taking a break or is there something going to happen that threatens our world?” He sat down and called to his assistant. “Those six kids that were on the roof. Send them to my office tomorrow. They need to know who it is they just met.”

Superior Era
How would you react if you found yourself unable to sleep? Not just for one day, or two days, or even three days, but a more permanent time span, like the rest of your life? That’s exactly the predicament Dario finds himself in and he’s thoroughly vexed by it. After all, what sort of sane person would want to miss out on sleep? A madman, that's who. It’s especially worrying considering how he lives in a world filled with fantastical monsters, deadly beasts, and 'Superiors' supposedly protecting the interests of humanity. Sleep is quite the necessity under those circumstances. Life is tough for an ostracized kid, but Dario quickly realizes that his wakeful nights are more blessing than curse, as there seems to be quite a few advantages in not having to sleep... Join Dario as he climbs the ranks of superhumans, uncovers hidden truths, travels the world, and discovers abilities he never before thought possible. This is a tale of superpowered/superhero-like individuals set in a dangerous fantasy world with hints of GameLit elements. Features MC with abilities deemed unique to the world and can disregard the need for sleep at no cost to himself. No Harems. Current Release Schedule: 3-5 chapters per week. (Slower updates for holiday season) First few chapters are fairly short, but the rest will average around 2.5k words.

Dauntless: Origins
Snow white hair, blue eyes, pale. Devil, monster, mutt, failure. This story follows one Tyr Faeron, crown prince, heir primus and mass murderer. A wrathful, angry, and lost young man that has made it his goal to hunt down the men that killed his mother - and he is on the cusp of finishing the promise he'd made before her cairn stones so many years ago. On the surface he is duplicitous, whimsical, and base of cunning - but within the depths beyond the many masks he wears, something is waiting. Waiting for an end, the end he'd come to long for, whether it be to himself or any possible threats in his vicinity. After that long labor of vengeance is completed... Nobody knows, not even him - an arrogant and otherwise solitary individual with nothing in the way of friends - only the brothers of the blackguard who follow him through life as he pursues this mission. He was born a prince, but he'd be called a disappointment - failing to manifest the great power that he was born to before being summarily discarded by his father, a 250 year old 'primus'. That word again... Men who can shatter mountains and level cities, that's what he was supposed to be. Some call them demi-gods, all Tyr sees is a poor excuse for a parent. Time had made him bitter, cruel, and arguably psychotic - seeing only enemies wherever he looks. They'd come for him, too, one day - to wipe the slate clean and make room for another - and it's his conviction to ensure that he dies while taking as many of those rats with him. This is a story about finding acceptance, growth, and understanding - from the point of view of a cold and brutal individual who wears many masks. Of someone who was born to be the greatest emperor the eastern continent has ever seen - but he failed in that. Strong, yes, but only in the context of a man - Tyr's magic is weak. His convictions are weak. He has been made a beast of instinct by loss and a constant confronting of his own impotency in the face of his father. A mythos that stretches across planes, of magic, a pantheon of cruel gods. Of someone who's dedicated his entire mind to the art of killing a man, and none to living a normal childhood or coming to understand friendship, empathy, or compassion. The first five years of his life a mystery, a hole none have ever been willing to fill, leaving him warped and twisted. His formative years gone and what must've been most of his humanity along with it. Now 17, he is on the cusp of leaving the city he'd never been permitted to leave for what might be the first time in his life. Always searching, though he won't know what for, for some time. An episodic that follows experience and symbolism rather than a never ending series of battles - where the conflict lay in constantly searching for wholeness in lieu of great villains or heroes. This is where it all started, the origin, the tale told a million times - and yet it hadn't been, 'reality' is tricky like that. The greatest lie ever told by the tongue that speaks is that any of this was real at all.
