《Powerless Hero》Chapter 2: Aaron

Elias and Becca, along with a group of other students, began to walk around the school following their tour guide. So far he showed them their strength training classroom and ability control classroom. He also showed them the cafeteria and the basic high school classes like English and Math. “As we round this corner to the main office your tour will end and you may go to the cafeteria to have your meal. Please remember that your schedule has been uploaded to your personal device and your first class will start at 8. Let’s try not to be late on the first day but it’s ok if you keep getting lost in the first week. You are now dismissed.”
All of the students left and tried to remember their way back to the cafeteria in the monstrous size of the school. Eventually Elias and Becca made it to the cafeteria and grabbed their food. They decided to sit together since they didn’t know anyone else currently in the room.
“Becca?!” A boy called. Elias looked in the direction to see who it was. Also dressed in the school uniform and standing at 5’ 9”. He had dark purple eyes that perfectly matched his wavy dark purple hair.
“Aaron?!?” Becca got up and ran over to him hugging him tightly. “You didn’t tell me you were enrolling here!”
“Well neither did you.”
“I guess we’re even then!” She smiled once again and looked in Elias’s direction. “You want to come sit with us?”
“Might as well.” Aaron walked over with Becca and sat down. “I’m Aaron Hughes. Who might you be?”
“Elias Roberts.”
“What? No way! You’re a Roberts! This is gonna be a breeze for you, you’ll be out kicking crime in no time!”

“Yea. I guess so.” Elias rubbed the back of his head a little.
“So how you did you and Becca meet?”
“Oh we’re actually roommates!” She replied smiling.
“Oh really!?! Well don’t be doing anything suspicious with each other while you’re alone.” He joked.
“Aaron!” Becca stood you all flustered and hit him. “You know I’m better than that!”
“Don’t worry we won’t. She’ll quickly find reasons to hate me.” Elias said quietly.
“What was that?” Becca asked.
“Nothing. Just thinking out loud.” Elias smiled at her.
“Ok!” She smiled again. They soon finished their meals and it was getting late.
“Hey Elias can we speak for a moment?” Aaron asked.
“Sure. Becca you go on ahead without me.” She began to walk towards their room. “So what is it?”
“What do you mean she will soon learn to hate you?”
“Oh you heard that! Yea. It’s because everyone I’ve ever met starts to hate me once they realize who I am.” He said void of emotion
“So you assume everyone will be like that?”
“Yea. Pretty much. I live by a certain rule that doesn’t let me get hurt by things like that so it doesn't matter to me."
“Oh yea? What’s that?”
“Don’t expect anything good to come from life. That way you’ll never be disappointed.”
Aaron paused for a bit. “That’s an interesting perspective. Alright well see you later then.” He began to walk in the opposite direction. "Could he be like Georgia?"
“I'm sorry?"
"Nothing... just thinking out loud."
"Oh ok. See you around.” Elias walked to his room and took out his key card and slid it in the door. It beeped saying it was unlocked and he was free to enter. He walked in seeing Becca wearing almost nothing and red faced. He quickly turned around. “Sorry. I will be outside. When you’re dressed come and get me so I know I can come in.” Becca didn’t say a word and he walked out.

About 5 minutes passed and she opened the door slightly. “I-I’m dressed now.” She said quietly.
Elias walked in and she went over and sat on her top bunk. She was unusually quiet. “Again sorry about that. I should have knocked.”
“It’s ok. I should have been changing in the bathroom.” She spoke quietly.
“I’m going to take a shower.” He said because the awkward silence was getting to him.
“Ok.”
Elias walked in the bathroom and took a shower. It didn’t take long and soon he was out and dressed in his sleep wear which was a t-shirt and shorts. Becca was sitting on his bunk watching tv. He sat down next to her to watch as well. She had her legs brought up next to her and rested her arms on her knees.
“You ok?”
She didn’t say much for a while. A few minutes passed until she finally spoke. “Yea.”
“With a response that long I don’t think you’re doing ok.” His soulless brown orbs meeting her deep light blue orbs.
“I know. I’m just really nervous for what’s to come.”
“Ah. Just don’t think too much into it. You’ll do great, I’m sure of it.”
“Thanks.” Becca smiled. “Really. It means a lot that you put that much faith into me even though you hardly know me.”
“Glad I could help. But we need to get sleep we don’t need to become tired on our first day.”
“True. What’s your schedule look like?”
“Well. 1st I have English then History. Next is something called break. Then Math. Lunch. Strength Training. Ability Training. Then last is Science.” Elias said looking at his phone.
“Ours is a little similar. I have Math then Science. Then I have break, then History. Lunch. Strength Training. Ability Training. Finally English as my last class.”
“Interesting. Well we should get sleep.”
“Agreed.” Becca left his bunk and climbed up to her bunk. “Goodnight Elias.”
“Goodnight Becca.”

The Core of a Factory
An abandoned steampunk arms factory, in the middle of a conflict torn former state of the Empire it served, gains a soul. This transforms it into a Lord, capable of turning land into power. Beset by enemies on all sides it must figure out how to win the war its creators lost a century ago. This is a progressive Dungeon Core novel (which is to say the core will progress and expand in scale, eventually) across multiple dimensions with different characteristics (e.g. steampunk, magic, mythological). It has rationalist leanings (paragraphs of reasoning) and litrpg leanings (there are stat blocks). The core game mechanical idea is something like "what if different flavors of magic power actually did come from controlling land" and then the story is: "what if there was a flavorless (artifact deck) dungeon core". Chapters will be relatively short (my aim is that in three column format each would fit on a wide screen monitor), the first few chapters - setting up the main character and mechanics - are currently the longest in the entire series. I write chapters in blocks, and then release them one a weekday (M-F; 6 PM GMT, unless RoyalRoad's publish thing screws up) until I run out. There may be a few days of gaps here and there if someone finds an egregious error I have to re-write around or if I am behind. In general though one can read this once a weekend. I may do slight retconns and edits, I'll make sure to put it in an authors note if I do.
