Intermission I, Part III: The Price of Failure
By Dagoth Milos, Former High Priest of Kirinibbi
I have infiltrated the Betrayer’s City and I find myself more and more troubled with every passing second as I near the Abomination, but it’s not the siren call it emanates that leaves me troubled—it is the pain it has caused. It has spread Lord Dagoth’s blessing without forethought or concern for who it would reach and now the City Below burns hot with a thousand fevers as their bodies undergo an evolution that they never should’ve been exposed to—all because of the Abomination or more accurately, because I didn’t kill it when I had the chance. I should have. I know I should have, but I didn’t, and now countless people are undergoing the Transformation and most of them, if not all of them, will join the growing ranks of the Lost, and for what? Because the Abomination could not demonstrate control? Because it sought only to spread Lord Dagoth’s blessing? I do not know what reasoning it had, but I know that the City Below burns alive in delirious fever as Lord Dagoth’s blessing ravages their bodies and I alone bear responsibility for allowing this to happen.
I once stood a High Priest in the Sixth House, but I have disgraced everything Lord Dagoth has taught by allowing this to happen.
My inaction has allowed thousands to undergo the Second Sacrament without having undergone the First and in doing so, I have damned nearly all of them to a fate unspeakable and there is no penance worthy of a failure of my magnitude. I have failed in my most sacred duties and that is the celebration of Lord Dagoth’s blessings unto us and though I can not change what has already been done, I can make right my failure and prevent another tragedy of this magnitude from coming to pass.

I write these words as I prepare myself for the coming conflict and I do so knowing that I will likely be killed by it, for it swept away countless of my brothers and sisters within the House from Kirinibbi, but I can not stand idly by again. My inaction has damned these people and though they are not my brothers by blood or by house, they are my brothers in that we call the same land home and as I feel their pain, their fear, their anger, I can’t escape the guilt of what my actions have done. I have done an unspeakable act against each and every one of them and I will make it right—as right as I can make it.
I swear it.
Either the Abomination or I will die by sunrise today and that is my solemn promise to all of you. To all who call my house their own. To all who call my home their own. To all who call the consequences of my failure to be their own—I will make things right or I will die trying.
Lord Dagoth, I pray you hear me as I speak out into the darkness, I will not fail you as I did before.
I will make myself worthy of the gifts you have bestowed upon me.
I swear it.

Updates daily at 23:06 UTC. 2/1/2021 NOTE! This trilogy is being published by Aethon Books starting with book one on 5/1/2021. All books have been removed from RoyalRoad. This story was posted on RR in its entirety before being removed. Magnus Cromwell kills for a living. He’s organized, professional, efficient. Like a machine. But when his family’s life is on the line? That’s something else. That calls for the kind of warm-blooded vengeance that scorches earth and summons tungsten rods from space, leaves a whole lot of melted flesh, and no one to tell the tale. It should've been a blue milk run. As by-the-book as it gets. With his sister Nina out safe and the opposition decimated by hypersonic gunfire, MC wondered where they got the guts to even try. Then something hits him. Lays him out cold, and leaves him waking up to a fantasyland with nothing but his armor and a half-written note to guide him. It's a strange place where even stranger predators eye him for their next meal. Where his life’s on a timer, and where the darkest horrors haunt his dreams, painting visions of death. There's no right day to mess with Magnus Cromwell. But the universe sure managed to pick the absolute worst one. --- - MC is stone-cold, strong(OP), and gets even stronger, but he'll still face his fair share of challenges, both internal and external. - LitRPG-lite. No stats and an unconventional system. Expect abilities and progressions, but there will only ever be a handful of them. - Science Fiction and Fantasy collide, with a touch of mystery, Lovecraft, and body horror. - Professionally painted art scenes! - This series is finished. The Lucky Secret
Five years ago, the Tower appeared in the Arctic circle, and people started to disappear. Not that any of this affected Cillian James, who was too busy keeping the lights on with webnovels he didn't want to write to really concern himself with some omniscient tower kidnapping people at random. That is, until Cillian is kidnapped himself, and now he has some very big problems on his hands. Namely, surviving the Tower and its homicidal salamanders and zombies and weirdly affectionate cats, and learning the truth behind the existence of the amulet titled "The Writer's Secret". Cilian isn't particularly athletic, given he spent six years glued to a computer chair, and the Tower can only give him so much strength before he's considered a lost cause, and he's not prepared in the slightest for this. He's a bit weak, he hates killing, and spends more time screaming than he does actually fighting, but if there's one thing he's got going for him, it's his impressive self-perseveration skills. But is surviving truly enough, if it changes you into someone you don't recognize? How much will he have to sacrifice before he can even call himself Cillian?
