《Cast Out》Side Story 1: Hunting for a Secret Class

While the events at the Boundary Forest were things that would eventually lead the entire world down strange paths, many more things were happening in the enormous world of Ralia. Some would lead one through amazing adventures, others would challenge one's abilities against ridiculously over-powered monstrosities, and others would be absolutely pointless and serve no purpose but to amuse anyone that happened to be watching.

Marilyn hoped that she was onto something amazing. Things in her life outside of the game had been stressful lately, and the fun times that she would have in the world of Ralia seemed to be decreasing day-by-day. As a 28 year old office worker, things could get more than a little stressful and dreary.

There just wasn't much that she could do with her current class. Somehow, every time that she would come across something amazing and game-changing for her, it would turn all turn out completely wrong. When she first started, she'd appeared at one of the biggest cities in the Human Kingdom of Glaceria.

She'd chosen that particular Kingdom because it was bordering the Werebeast Nations, specifically the States of Flyte. Kingdoms that bordered the other major races' nations had a higher chance for the users to be involved in something big. Back on Earth, the United Nations, which was the biggest place to be involved in international affairs, was also one of the best places to be if you wanted to help decide the direction the world would take (or at least get a front-row seat to the action). That was when it was only between different nations. When it came down to inter-species/inter-racial affairs, you could bet that it could only get even bigger and more complex than it ever could in the U.N.

Although she couldn't do much back on Earth to be involved in something like the United Nations, at least here on Ralia she could be part of something bigger. Something life-changing that would mean something. Or so she thought.

After 4 months of playing, she still hadn't managed to set out on an adventure outside of the city she'd originally started out in as a beginner. In fact, the farthest she'd ever gone were the hunting grounds nearby the city. Before she died and had been resurrected at the "Last Memory" (the inn where she stayed inside the city) 10 hours later RT (Ralia-Time).

She'd never tried to go outside the city gates again after that.

Every single thing after she'd revived that could have gone wrong, did go wrong. Immediately after she resurrected, she'd tried to go to the public training hall to learn how to swing a sword better. Everything was for her big dream of doing something that would change the world, and at that time she could just picture herself slaying monsters left and right, saving city after city, conquering dungeon after dungeon, with only a sword in hand. She would be a powerful swordswoman that stood between the monsters and the rest of the world, in gleaming armor with her long brown hair flowing in the wind.

The Instructor kicked her out of the training hall after 30 minutes.

How was she supposed to know that she was using the wrong end of the wooden sword to try to hit the wooden dummy? Wasn't the fact that she couldn't hit the target with the sword for the entire half-hour, more reason that they needed to train her? Everyone else said that the dummy had been standing still, rooted to the ground. She knew though, she knew that the dummy had been dodging every single one of her hits. What other explanation was there for the fact that she hadn't been able to hit it even once during the whole time that she was there?

After she'd been kicked out of the public training hall, she'd tried her hand at magic. That was always a fun way to go in games, she'd reasoned. Envisioning herself as the Grand Magister, she would decimate armies, conjure up enormous storms that would alter the very fate of a war with just a wave of her hand, and summon magnificent and exotic beasts that would travel with her to every corner of the world. With a single word, she would be able to usher in peace between all of the races, and protect them all from the onslaught of the monsters from other dimensions with her trusty staff at her side, her robe flowing in the wind, and a cowl obscuring her face so that she could be even more mysterious. With all of that in mind, she'd gone to the Little Magi's Public School for Magic in high spirits. After all, she was a player so it was practically guaranteed that she'd be able to do any kind of magic that she put her mind to.

It took them even less time to kick her out than the training hall Instructor had.

In all of the 10 minutes that she'd been in there, she had already started a legend. Somehow, Marilyn had messed up on one of the most basic spells there was, Sparks. The only thing it did was create a few sparks which could be used to light a fire for something like cooking. When she used it however, the sparks had actually gone in every single direction except for where she'd wanted it to go, setting fire to the Magi's clothes in an embarrassing way. The Magi had to douse herself with water magic, and then go back home so she could change out of her robes, which were now partially see-through. All the guys in her class loved it though, because the Magi had been an incredibly attractive woman.

Long story short, for some reason every single spell that she tried to do somehow went wrong. It was obvious even to her that magic was clearly not her thing.

After a series of unfortunate events, she'd eventually ended up working as a Librarian for the past 4 months in one of the city's 7 main libraries, specifically it was Half-Roc Library which was located not too far from the city gates. She figured that being at a place that had so many adventurers and players coming and going, she'd eventually be able to find a class that would suit her the best.

And after 4 months, she'd found it!

It all started out with noticing a few clues in some obscure books she'd found while organizing the different bookshelves in the library. They'd all referenced some sort of secret, some mysterious profession that was able to do amazing things. As she researched more and more about it, hunting through books so esoteric, foreign and massive that it would give people a heart attack by just looking at it, she became even more convinced that it was the perfect class for her.

She would be able to easily demolish any enemy's fortress, while also being able to communicate with the spirits of the world!

She would be wanted by the rulers of every nation!

She would have the mind of a brilliant mage!

She would have twice the strength of a swordsman of her level!

After gathering up all of the clues that she'd found over the course of the entire 4 months that she'd been playing the game (Earth-time), she quit her job at the Half-Roc Library and snuck her way around the city to a deserted alleyway. Or at least, she did her best anyway. Marilyn knew that she wasn't the best at sneaking around. She'd failed to become a rogue after all, but that was a story for another day.

It was a complete dead-end, with only a brick wall to show for all of her efforts.

She didn't give up, however. Rifling through the various papers that she'd brought with her that contained all of the research she'd done over the past 4 months (Earth-time), she finally found one that had a drawing which seemed exactly like the brick wall she was facing right now. The only difference was that the drawing had numbers scattered on random bricks throughout the wall.

Marching up to it, she rapped her knuckle twice on each of the bricks shown in the drawing, in the order that the numbers went. As soon as she'd done that, a scraping sound could be heard, followed by the bricks rearranging themselves to form a doorway.

She hesitated a little at first, but then decided that she'd come too far to back out now.

As soon as she walked through the doorway, the bricks rearranged themselves back into the inconspicuous, rundown wall behind her.

What lay in front of her was something she didn't expect to see.

A perfectly normal dining table, with a woman in her mid-30's sitting in a chair, sipping from a small porcelain cup. If you had to describe her, it was almost as if someone had taken Hollywood's most stereotypical high-class English woman, and placed her right there drinking what might have been tea.

"You've come a long way. Please, sit." The woman instructed.

Feeling compelled to obey, Marilyn took a seat from the chair directly in front of the woman.

"Are you sure that this is the path you wish to take?" Putting down her cup, she looked pointedly at Marilyn.

"I'm sure. There's nothing more that I could possibly want to do." Since she was feeling nervous, she was only able to give the standard reply that anyone would say in front of an NPC that was going to give them a Secret Class.

"You're about to embark on a path that was brought forth by one of the many great people of the world," The woman began.

"Once, he was known by children throughout all of the lands," She continued.

'Wait, did she just say children?' Marilyn wondered.

"In the span of half an hour or less, he was able to tear down anything in his path or build whatever his heart desired."

Marilyn's eyebrows furrowed. 'That doesn't sound right. I'm getting a bad feeling about this.'

The woman took a breath. "The only flaw that one could say he had, was that he loved to talk to his tools, and pretend that they were able to talk with him as well. Many a time he had long conversations with them."

'Please don't be what I think this is!' Marilyn begged in her mind.

"That's right! Young hero, the person whose path you now follow is none other than Architect Robert! Better known as Bob the Builder!!" The woman finished with an expectant smile.

In contrast, Marilyn felt her mind crumbling at the thought of all the work she'd done to get this far.

'DAMMIT, WHY?!!' Was the anguished scream that echoed through her head.
