《New World +》Ch.6 The Gathering

Andrew and his team gasped as the came to the randevu strange rock doesn't really cut it. The 'rock' if you want to call it that was more like a crystal it was pure white like it was made of marble but also translucent it's strange properties also affected the area around it the small clearing that it was in was also pure white from the grass to the strange small specs of light that seemed to flicker like fireflies the only thing disturbing this scene was the large group of people that were milling around in it. As Andrew and his team moved in to the clearing he felt his bones begin to shack and a small ringing started up in his ears he felt like he had when he had gone to a rock concert but couldn't hear the music.
Looking around he say most of the other teams and while they all seemed worse for the wear but surprisingly no one seems to have died of course counting heads wasn't his strong suit but head find out soon enough as he walked to were the two groups team leaders were converged as he walked over Andrew saw a team that had duct taped their knives to their spears.
'Fuck why didn't we do that, that's brilliant' his thoughts expanded when he saw another group of people holding clubs with bird talons attached to them and another were using the bird's beaks as a kind of gauntlet
'Well damn guess I'm not as smart as I thought I was' as he entered the group Jace noticed him
"Hey Andy good to see you finally made it what took so long"
"So long? Jace the forest in infested with six foot tall murder birds how long was i supposed to take?"
"Ha ha looks like you had it rougher than the rest of us we only had a few run ins with the dame things" Don's laughter bought a few nervous chuckles

"Any way now that your here we can finally start talking about everything we found out" Jace was interrupted by a sudden squawking sound as a group of birds found the clearing everyone watched as the birds charged forward only to sope as the edge of the clearing squawking wildly as the backpedaled a few yards away and started to eye them hatefully
"Guess my idea that this was a safe place was right" Lee spoke up with a small grin
"This place dose seem to be 'powerful' if that's the word for it"
"Magic, Andy the word your looking for is magical" Andrew rolled his eyes at Jace's comment
"Anyway im sure you got some questions but look at this first" Don decided to going in as he pulled out a woven basket Andrew had time to see that it was made out of native grass's before Don started to pull stuff from it Andrew felt his mouth drop as Don continued to pull stuff out.
"Alright now promise not to freak out to much about this" Don then to out his knife and drew a small cut on his wrist Andrew watched as after a few seconds the wound closed up
"OK but how though?" Andrew decided to ignore Jace's disappointed mutterings. After all the things he had experienced to day the casual breaking of general physics was far from shaking him he wasn't annoyed by it at all nope not a bit
"Ok man you can stop staring at me like that" Don almost laughed at his friends reaction the two had been friends for years and Don knew when Andrew was stressed he could only sigh inwardly as he decided to bite the bullet
"Alright i'm sure you did your own research on the way here but you probably reached the wrong conclusion like Jace did" "Hey" Jace's protest was ignored as Don continued

"First off this is a different world, dimension, place were just gonna call it a world i'm sure you already knew that but it bears repeating, second were still made of matter from our world which I believe is why we've felt so strange since we got here."
"Yeah it's like something is trying to pull us apart and push us together or there's some weird pressure inside our bodies" Don nodded to Jace this time acknowledging him before continuing on.
"Third is that the natural rules have changed obviously since we wouldn't be here if they didn't but with that it's important to note that while we can interact with the new world we can't interact with it the way it interacts with itself if that makes any sense. It's weird but things like knives if they're made from earth matter don't increase the damage you do and things made from this world's matter have strange aspects like being able to hold almost four times their volume"
"Wait but I did a test, the knives have double the kill potential" Don nodded at Andrew's question "I figured you would do some tests but I did to and what I found is that unarmed it takes sixty seven hits to kill with your fists but after a few hours it started to take thirty four this change happens to everyone and it didn't matter what weapon they used the spears seem to increase damage by about ten present while the knives default to whatever you have been useing, use spears and it's thirty one use your bare hands it's thirty four. I know it's weird but i'm sure we can find out how this all really works later"
"Great more questions we need answers for oh the joy" Jace could only laugh at Andrews deadpan "oh come on it's not that bad it's like a game here you need to hit something a certain number of time to kill it and getting better weapons reduces the number of hits you need you can store a ridiculous number of items in small bags and theirs medicine that can heal you instantly"
"Any game that requires you to hit a mob thirty one times is a game I don't want to play"
Jace gritted his teeth "Come on man TRY to enjoy this we're in a world where there's giant magic crystals and we can fight against monsters sure we'll probably die in the next thirty minutes but we would probably have starved to death anyway so TRY to have some form of fun I mean damn your making it hard to be positive here."
Sighing Andrew did have to admit that being in a different world was interesting "Fine sorry for being an ass but in my defences I totally deserve to be an ass right now"
"Besides that who said anything about dieing I knew you weren't listening to our conversation Jace we already tried the bird meat and it was fine plus there's no way in hell i'm getting offed by some sesame street reject" Lee's timely interruption was itself interrupted by the sound of more birds gathering around the clearing
"So what was your plan exactly?" andrew asked a Lee and Don turned to him with two of the biggest shit eating grins he had ever seen on them as they spoke in unison "You're gonna love this."

Tales From the Terran Republic
We tried, you know… We really did. We tried so hard to be… better… We actually were better once. No, seriously. We were enlightened, generous, peaceful… Stop laughing! We were! We were peaceful, dammit! No, I’m not “tugging your winglets.” It’s true! Look, if you’re going to be like that, I’ll just push the launch button right now. See ya, don’t wanna be… Oh, you ARE interested after all? Ok. Hey, I just got word that your captain will be ok. We were able to get him into a med pod quick enough… Of course, we tried to save him. Just what sort of people do you think we are?... Now that was harsh… completely accurate, mind you… but harsh. Anyway, like I was saying, we were a prosperous, peaceful people, and war had been nothing but a distant memory for over five hundred years before it happened... Before Yellowstone happened! You don’t mean to tell me that you didn’t know about that… massive supervolcano? Blew the Hell out of our planet? Two years where nothing grew?… Anyway, that’s what started it, the Sol Wars… Oh, you have heard about those, huh? Well, needless to say, all that enlightened, generous, and peaceful didn’t exactly make it through the two years of complete famine and the wars that followed… Maybe it’s more accurate to say the enlightened, generous, and peaceful among us didn’t survive… (laughs)… You’re right. It does explain a lot, doesn’t it? Probably for the best, though. “Enlightened” and “peaceful” aren’t really all that useful out here in the galaxy at large, are they? That reminds me; thanks for the ship. You guys did a great job with this one. Oh, don’t be like that. At least it was us what got you and not one of the really messed groups like the Harlequin or the Black Angels. We’re just going to take your shit. It could be worse… trust me... Well, anyway, we loaded the life pods down with some good food, and you guys can drink alcohol, right? We put in a couple of fifths in there, too. It’s about forty percent ethanol, so be warned. Most species will want to dilute that. We’ll drop your wounded off somewhere safe once they are stable. Your fleet patrols this area fairly regularly, and we’ll drop the distress beacon right before we jump… Well, It’s been fun and no hard feelings, right?… Oh, you want to know some more? Sure. I got time to kill… Let me tell you about this one pirate and her crew. They’re Terran scum, but they are still… Why do we hate the Terrans? Hoo Boy… How much time you got? *** It’s the thirty-second century, and humanity is now part of a galactic civilization comprised of hundreds of worlds. Humanity has been savaged by natural disaster and war and has been fractured into several separate populations, all of which loathe each other (some things never change). This is a gritty drama-driven rambling tale that swings between action, drama, horror, and plenty of very, very dark comedy. Warning: contains adult situations, absolutely horrible language, bathroom humor, implied ultra-violence, actual ultra-violence, drugs, alcohol, pirates, mercs, xeno prostitutes, moral ambiguity, deranged AI's with identity issues, giant commie space slugs, and a poor little frog girl who just wants to sell coffee. Updates twice weekly on Tuesday and Friday. *** Note: This story can get rough. Those warning tags? They aren't for show. I recently received a review and as a result I want to make one thing clear. Portraying something is NOT endorsing it! Many "heavy" topics are touched upon and just because a character says or does something does not imply that the author feels the same way. I selected the "Anti-Hero Lead" and "Villainous Lead" tags for a reason. Rule number one of this story is "no good guys". A good description of the story is, "bad people doing bad things to worse people". There are a few good characters, here and there, but they are the exception to the rule. If you want a hard-hitting, exciting, gritty sci-fi story that doesn't pull any punches, or shies away from "difficult" concepts, welcome! If you are set on a pure and noble knight that runs around and slays conveniently evil monsters and rescues totally innocent princesses... or your sensibilities are easily offended... You're not going to be happy with this one.

Again from Scratch Saga: Izmittor Unchained
If someone precious to you needed your help, would you extend it? Would you still do it if it costs you your peace and perhaps even your life? For Tercius, a man mysteriously reborn nearly thirteen years ago, there was only one answer to both questions. Feeling compelled, he sets out to journey to the northern Sogea and its infamous Western Izmittor mountain range, a natural stronghold of sky tearing mountains and deep canyons. Legends about the place abounded, but he knew without a doubt that the hidden valleys, rushing rivers, thick forests, and desolate landscapes hid powerful predators, the likes of which stalk the harsh terrains for an easy source of meat and bones. The many natural dangers of Western Izmittor would be hard enough to navigate safely for a lone traveler, but to make matters worse Tercius had enemies in the heights of Western Izmittor, humans and spirits who would see him dead if they ever learned of his true connection to the Pyramid of Tergaron and the Society of the Magi. To make things even more difficult, he also had to ensure that the true extent of his own Innate Skills remained hidden, for if the prying eyes of the world fell on him and his many secrets came to light, then he would never again know a day of peace. Can one reborn man manage to keep his secrets and still succeed in doing what his conscience compels him to? Will he have to choose one over the other? And can he do any of it without reigniting the sparks of a planetary war the likes of which had not been seen in millennia? Follow Tercius’ story and find out! *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** This story is a continuation of Again from Scratch, a story of mine also posted on RR. Reading it is NOT necessary to read this story, but for anyone who wants to get a little bit more background, here is a link: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/38803/again-from-scratch Again from Scratch was my first journey into writing and I have taken all I learned from that and started writing Again from Scratch Saga, a continuation that is almost stand alone. Changes in certain phrases and words between the two are edits made because of the rewrite plans I have for the old story.
