The two of them were adrift. Mith said it was the twelfth day, but Kynos had long since lost count.

Although they had no map and Mith could not guess the direction because there were two suns, the boat was actually moving smoothly through the water. Mith had directly Kynos to take apart the wooden crates and cut the sail canvas, and they had created a small square sail. With the remainder of the materials, they had made a small area for shade and cover against rain in the back half of the boat, where they took turns sleeping.

As expected, Kynos mostly slept during the day, and Mith at night, but even with this schedule, she forced him to do the tutoring sessions.

Mith also arranged for food rationing and used the medicine box to treat Kynos the first night. According to her, they would be able to drift for three weeks before running out. Kynos mostly just missed Axal and thought about eating cake.

The ocean at nighttime suited Kynos, who was used to being cold. He thought about the many things Mith had taught and was teaching him.

She had explained her magical device to him. According to Mith, there were ruins of an ancient civilization buried beneath the ground, scattered across every continent. Some of these ruins had been exposed by something called 'volcanic activity,' which Kynos didn't understand, and so it was easier to find relics among the islands and their reefs, especially for the merfolk.

Most of the things that were found were useless, but Mith mentioned that some of them extremely advanced retained functions. Several types of metal and materials that couldn't be made with current refining techniques had also been found.

What Mith was researching most of the time were these relics, especially the ones that retained functions, like her silver cylinder. She said the it required immense amounts of mana to operate even the simplest tools like the cylinder, which she called a 'skeleton key', but some objects responded to different magic affinities as well.

The people that could use them were rare. Mith said that above-average mana occurred roughly in one in a thousand people, and high levels were roughly one in a hundred-thousand. On top of that, people who had magic affinity, and therefore were commonly tested for mana levels, were one in ten-thousand, making mages extremely rare and mana testing uncommon.

Kynos was taught that the chances of a mage like him occurring were greater than one in ten million, as his shadow magic made him even more rare. He withheld the urge to ask if rare was the best. It did explain why there was only one primary school that taught magic, and why the instructors were all so high level.

Mith was looking for the power necessary to kill god, but unlike Kynos, she didn't luck out with a magic affinity. She could, however, use artifacts no one else was able to due to her mana being nigh immeasurable. As an example, she asked Kynos to shoot off a fireball, and based on that, confirm how many he could shoot continuously. Kynos over-estimated to around eleven, and Mith mentioned that a single fireball of the same level from an artifact would eat the mana of around fifty of his own. Even then, she could still shoot more than eleven in a row.

Kynos was suitably impressed.

On the ninteenth day, Mith caught sight of shore. She shook Kynos awake and changed the heading of the boat with the rudder. As they neared, they saw that the beach was teeming with life.

Very agitated life.
