To put it simply, there were quite a few types of magic and mages were usually able to use one to two types:

Fire magic, magic that generates combustion anywhere there is oxygen, highly destructive, mana consuming, and hard to control, a commonly found type among mages.

Water magic, needs already existing water from vapor in the air or a nearby source, but easily controlled with low mana requirements, also common.

Earth magic, different mages have affinity with different rare minerals even though they can all manipulate loose grains like dirt and sand, favored for smithing, construction, and various other things; widely considered the most useful type of magic, and thankfully, common.

Wind magic, the ability to manipulate air itself, extremely useful in combat due to synergy with arrows, other magic, speed buffs, and low mana usage, uncommon among mages.

Light magic, the ability to create and/or concentrate light, can be used to light rooms or start fires, can vary from useless to powerful depending on the amount of light available to focus, moderate mana consumption and calorie consumption is creating light, uncommon among mages.

Shadow magic, the ability to give form and direction to any kind of shadow, the power varies with the darkness of the shadow and is unrivaled at night, low mana consumption. rare among mages.

Life magic, a magic with large variations, can manifest anything from the ability to heal to the ability to influence the minds of lesser creatures, the magic type is common, but several variations are extremely rare.

Divine magic, magic from the blessings of the gods, unrelated to inborn talent but consumes much more mana and depending on the god, can have various effects.

Kynos was told that he had demonstrated an affinity with shadow magic, but might have more. He also learned that each type of magic branched out into advanced magic as well, like the principle's portal magic, which is a derivative of shadow magic. Mana is the resource to use magic, and is fixed from birth for each person. A lack of mana results in high mental fatigue.

Since he was the only one at the lecture room, the affinity tests were also conducted there.
