《The Endless War》Chapter 15: Distance

It’s been awhile since Junji went out to Ricky’s Meat Shop. In the past, he went here after every successful game he won back in grade school. Back when Basketball was something that he had a lot of passion and time for.
When he got older and dropped the sport he never really went back to the meat shop anymore. But, now that he had truly accomplished a great feat it was truly time to pig out like he used to. After all, it could be the last meal he has, but probably not.
It wasn’t a far walk from Xander’s office. Things felt different for the group now. Instead of walking as civilians they were walking as official members of Seer and that warranted a lot more respect from people.
As people passed by the group they stopped for a moment to take a glance at those devices on their arms. It was an easy giveaway that they were indeed a part of that particular group. Young kids often cheered even though the group was still fresh and new.
“I like that. The kids know what’s up. They know that I’m the hero of this town! Yadon the Great!” He chuckled loudly, basking in the glory of his newfound heroics.
“You’re going to get a lot more praise than that. Just you wait for hun.” As always Quin supported her man all the way.
“Wow…” Isaac started, rubbing a finger against his cheek which was flushed with pink. “I never got this much attention before. It’s… kind of embarrassing, hehe…”
“I guess that's one of the perks of being a member of Seer now,” Claire mentioned, chuckling just a bit.
“Heh, looks like I’ll be able to pick up any chick now.” Junji snickered under his breath.
“Come on, Junji is that all that matters to you?”
“No, it’s just what matters to me the most now.”
“You should be focusing more on the gym little fella.” Yadon moved a muscular hand to pat the ultramarine locks of his new comrade.
“I’m not little… I’m taller than you!”
“That doesn’t matter. In muscle height, I’m way taller than you.”
“That’s not even a thing!”
“Quin can vouch for me, right baby?”
“Of course, if Yadon says it then it is so.” Quin clings to her behemoth of a boyfriend.
“Geez, what a yes man. Isaac, there both full of crap aren’t they!?”
“Muscle height sounds kind of goofy. You didn’t really think that was real did you, Yadon?”
“No, no, no muscle height is real. I read about it in a web article. They can’t lie on there.”
“Hey, you can't believe everything you see on the internet.” Interjected Claire, including herself in the conversation.
“No, you’re wrong Claire! The article even said he wasn’t lying. So he’s sworn an oath.”
“I don’t think it works like that buddy.” Junji shook his head as if he was dealing with an idiot because he was.
“Shut up! It’ll work however I say it works!”
“Calm down babe, uhh, Claire’s kinda right.”
“Kinda? Babe, are you serious?” Yadon comes to a halt and shifts his gaze over towards Claire.
Claire chuckles nervously as she heard this, scratching her head. “I'm just saying be careful with what you believe online.”

“Yeah, I hear you. I hear you.” Of course, by his voice, it was easy to tell that he now had some personal beef with Claire.
Time seemed to flow by as it didn't take any time for the group to arrive at the entrance of the restaurant. Before they even entered the establishment the pungent aroma of a deceased animal frying could be smelled.
“Here we are, folks, the best meat shop in town. Though expensive it is completely worth it for that quality meat.” Junji spoke as if he was trying to sell a product to the group.
“We get it, Junji. You really like your meat. Let’s go see if we can find a seat for six people.” Isaac suggested as he opened the door inside.
It wasn’t too busy there were a few empty seats around. One booth would be enough to sit them. The other customers that were seated looked very happy tearing up the abundance of red meat on their plates that was leaking with blood. A lot of them were healthy bodied.
“Hello there, can I help you?” A young waitress with auburn hair greeted the large group.
“Yeah, we’d like a table for six please,” Junji said comfortably. He came here the most so it was no guess as to why he was familiar with the place.
“No problem. You came at the right time we’re having a contest! If one of you can eat a 50oz steak then you’ll have the entire meal waived! But if you fail you’ll have to pay 200 geos up front!”
“F-Fifty ounces? There's no way I could eat something like that. Anyone else thinks they're up for that?” Claire asked.
“I’ll eat every ounce of it,” Junji said with a confident smirk.
“Get out of here shrimp. I’m eating that steak. I worked up an appetite.”
“You can both try it you’d just have to pay double the amount if you both lose!”
“Anyone else wants in? Isaac? You could really put on some fat.” Yadon said while moving a strong index finger to poke at his ribcage.
“H-hey stop! That… tickles!” Isaac couldn’t help but laugh out in public which brought some of the attention from the customers.
“Let me lead you to your seats!” The peppy waitress proclaimed as she went and lured the group to their seats.
“No one asked if I was willing to participate…” Grey mentioned as they headed over to their seats, and it did sound genuine.
“Hahahahaha!” Yadon broke out in a fit of laughter. “Kid stop playing. There’s no way you can eat a 50-ounce steak!”
“Why not? Should I eat two to prove a point..?”
“Look at you. You’re thinner than Junji and Isaac over there. Do you really think you can finish the whole steak?”
“He’s right dear. Maybe you should order a steak from the kid’s menu.” Quin added.
Grey stares at the two quite blankly, before she reached down to raise her shirt ever so slightly to reveal… quite solid abs, for a girl her size.
“What the… you have abs? You must have put in a lot of work. That’s great! Uh, what was your name again?” Quin asked a bit confused.

The group managed to take a seat in the booth Yadon and Quin sitting on one side with Junji tagging along while the others sat on the other end.
“Grey…” the girl stated, taking her seat beside Claire who looked at the three challenge participants, worriedly. “Are you guys sure you can eat all of that meat?”
“Yes, I’m sure. My body burns protein like it’s nothing.” Yadon slammed his fist on the table, he seemed very confident in his abilities.
“Anything else you guys want? I can start you off with some drinks and if you’re ready your meals as well.”
Isaac raises his hand. “Can I have some orange juice please?”
“Sure!”
“I'll take a nice cold glass of water, please.” Claire added.
The waitress nods and proceeds to take the rest of the orders. Yadon and Junji made sure to order plenty of water because when the steak came in they’d have to make sure to keep their throat nice and lubricated or risk choking.
It didn’t take long for that medium rare steak to be delivered on a large sized plate. Its red juices seeped from the bottom. Yadon and Junji’s mouth started to water as they saw it.
“It’s beautiful… I deserve this!” Junji wasted no time going for his knife and fork, cutting into the tenderloin as he dropped a piece into his mouth which caused his eyes to water. “S-so good… it’s better than I imagined!”
Seeing this, Yadon reached for his knife and fork and cut a big ol’ slice as he shoved the entire thing into his mouth and started to chew very slowly with a calm expression on his face.
They weren't the only ones to get to enjoy the giant beauty that was the 50-ounce steak, as next to Claire, Grey was in the middle of cutting a fine piece from her own, applying a generous amount of steak sauce as well.
“Geez… it's bigger than I thought it was.” Claire would mention as she sipped her water, going on to prepare the salad she had ordered.
Seeing this Isaac just stared at all of the meat before laughing softly. “Wow… with all of this meat, I think I want to become vegan for a bit.”
Junji, on the other hand, was starting to sweat heavily before he wiped his forehead. “Alright… I’m full.”
“Already? So you're willing to pay the geos?” Asked Claire, waving her fork at Junji for being wasteful.
Junji’s face turns red as he just remembered that he’d have to pay such a hefty price. “Aww man… I forgot all about that!” He whined. “I don’t suppose no one will spot me…? Hehe.”
“Spot you? How much do you have?” Claire would ask him with a sigh.
He mumbles but everything he says is inaudible.
“I'm sorry, I didn't quite hear what you said.”
“Well… I have money… I just don’t really want to pay for this…” He admits.
“Hey, you did decide to take the challenge. So unless you or someone else wants to finish it…”
“Aww man, I lucked out.”
“I can cover you, Junji.” Isaac insists.
“A real man never bites more than he can chew.” Yadon sprouted wise words before cleaning half of his plate, nearly finished with the food already.
“Those are words I really don’t need to hear right now.”
Claire can't help but laugh a bit. “Sheesh, I know your pockets are going to hurt.”
“It’s alright. Money’s fine, so I don’t have to worry. Plus I know Junji would do the same.”
“Isaac… you’re my best friend. Thanks, man.” He stretched out his hand to take hold of his friend’s.
“No problem, I’m happy to help.”
“Seems pretty fruity. A real man doesn’t have a best friend, only rivals.”
“I could eat the rest of it…” said a soft voice. One that belonged to Grey, who was cutting another piece of her own steak.
“You really think you could?” Junj was skeptical.
“Maybe. Might as well try.” She mentioned, before inserting a nice fresh cut into her mouth.
“Speaking of rivals… you’re all competition. I’m trying my hardest to become one hell of a hero, so I don’t want any of you slowing me down and I can only carry so many of you on my shoulders.” Yadon stated as he bit into another piece of steak.
“Is that really how you see all of us, Yadon?” Isaac asked.
“Yeah. I’m trying to do big things in this world and in order to do that I have to stand out.”
“I'm not here to compete, I'm just here to play my role in getting the job done.” Claire states. “If you want to go above and beyond, by all means, do it.”
“Believe him when he says he will. Yadon’s all about going above and beyond people’s expectations. He truly is a star. You guys will soon find that out.” Quin backs up her man with a smile.
“Starting tomorrow I’ll be dedicating my time and energy into missions helping out the people around here. You guys will have to get by on your own.” With this, the behemoth finishes the steak and burps lightly.
“That’s fine, but I really think we should work on our cooperation skills. Being a team is all about teamwork and if we work together we can accomplish more don’t you think?” Isaac questions.
“The only team I need is my girl here.” With this Yadon takes a stand from the table and pats his belly. “Thank you for the meal, now I’ll be going now. I have more training.” He reaches into his pockets and pulls out his wallet before dropping 450 geos onto the table.
“Well then. I can see where this team might fall short.” Claire said, poking her fork around her salad.
After Yadon and his girlfriend departed Junji rolled his eyes and crossed his arms against his chest. “You know what who needs them? We can do so much more without them and why don’t we prove it? Let’s do some missions tomorrow morning guys. Whaddaya say?”
“That's fine with me. Sounds like a good start to our Seer careers.” says Claire, in agreement.
“Sure, but you may want to finish that steak first, hahaha!” Isaac joked.
“Right… the steak.”

8 111Dream Theater
Long casted shadows danced in the background, as a man squibbled and jotted words on yellow papers. A mere novelty, remnant and ghost that was left to age away along with the forgotten theater, a man grasped for inspiration to salvage what was left of his soul. Abandoned in the squalid room, Pxan was left hauntedly in the furthest corners of insanity that bubbled in his mind. No one would listen to his plight, denouncing him and claiming his mind was not right. Even though the world left him with nothing, turning their backs to him, he knew the books would never betray him in the same fashion. Faceless pages and books yet to be read ogled puppy eyes, ready to be penned by the madman. “Pxan! Pxan! Over here! To me!” Clamored the unpublished manuscripts. Pxan’s fingers quivered nervously, thoughts of failure flooded his mind. Wanting to surrender to the pressure. “No!” He cried. “I’ve had enough of writing.” Books with eyes all stared at him, begging for the tales to be written. Their pleaful eyes were all that Pxan needed to be moved to writing again. The man sighed and raised his pen again, stroking the first letters of inspiration that bore fruit from his mind.
