《The Endless War》Side Chapter 001: Yadon

Determination. This was one word that could sum up Yadon’s motivation. That is what drove him to get to where he is today. An official Seer member. He generated a lot of spark after being the first group to make it back to Terra while carrying Noel. Because of this, he was the talk among the Captains.
Since he finished so early he had a lot of free time on his hands and wasn’t told to meet up with Xander until the others finished as well. He was a bit frustrated that he couldn’t start working because the others were holding him back.
Currently, he was just finishing a fitness test at the wellness institute. A lot of the workers were amazed at the physique and body structure of Yadon and were flooding him with questions.
“How were you able to run for such an extended period of time?”
“Simple, because I could.”
The man in the white coat grew annoyed with this basic response and started to rub his temples. “You’re aware that your body structure well in great shape still doesn’t surpass that of an Olympic level athlete? There’s no possible way that you should have been able to run for so long.”
“Man, you smartie pants scientist don’t get it, do you? It has nothing to do with the body!”
“What…?”
“The reason I was able to keep going is because of my mind. A goal to be more exact. I have a goal that has been pushing me ever since I was little.”
“A goal… this is reality. Something like that couldn’t push you to these levels.”
“That’s what you think, but I’m living proof that it can. Now if you’ll excuse me… my bae is waiting for me.” Yadon took a stand and started to head out of the lab.
It was good that he was getting attention and recognition, but the scientist could get very annoying. They always wanted to find proof about whatever they were trying to figure out. Sometimes things were just simple. The only reason he could keep running back in the woods was because he was determined to reach his goal.
As he exited out the sliding doors, he could immediately see his girlfriend who was waiting outside for him. This brought a wide smile to his face.
Where would I be without my bread? I feel like a man can do anything when he’s fighting to impress the woman he loves.
“How’d it go?”

“It was boring. Besides them asking me twenty-one questions. Still, is it vain of me that I secretly enjoy it? Hehe.” He giggled like a pubescent boy for a moment which sounded very odd for a man of his appearance.
“I’m so happy for you. It’s about time that you gained some attention. No one has been working as hard as you, period.”
One could question why Yadon chose this girl to be his intimate partner. Her looks were quite average and nothing really stood out about her. She had short brown hair with the length of it stopping by the back of her neck while her side bangs calmly rested against the sides of her face.
Her eyes were a lighter shade than that of her hair. Her fashion sense was that of every other female around Terra, wearing slightly torn pink mini shorts with a brown belt strapped around. She wore matching white and purple striped socks around her feet and a white tank top.
Her left hand was covered with a purple glove missing fingers. She probably used the glove to support her grip when using her gun which was attached to a holster along her side.
There was just something about her that he respected. Having Quin along always brightened up his day. Dealing with his family, however, was another story.
“Now don’t get the wrong idea, but let’s take a break from training just for today.”
“Are you feeling alright? Weren’t you the person who said we could never take breaks?”
“That’s true, but today’s a very special occasion. Today we’ll finally be able to go out there and kick monster ass! Do you know how long I’ve waited to grind my ax into the flesh of something living!?”
“We have waited awhile. But, something’s actually been bothering me recently?”
Hmm, that’s strange. Normally she lets me know right away when something’s been troubling her.
“What’s up?”
“You haven’t talked to your parents in a while. Don’t you think you should at least let them know that you made it?”
Yadon’s mouth dropped open for a bit before he turned his head. Sometimes he just wanted to forget about them, but like any good girlfriend, Quin kept on bringing them up. A personal rule was for him to never upset his girlfriend in any way possible.
“You’re right. I wasn’t going to say anything, but… since you’re bothered by it we can stop by for a real quick second. Real quick.”

“Really? Great! I’m sure they’ll be happy to know this much.”
Personally, I don’t care. But, for you baby, I’ll do anything.
“Me too.”
It didn’t take long for the two to arrive at Yadon’s parent's house. They owned a very standard single family home and it hasn’t changed much from the looks of it.
I haven’t been here for months. This is going to be very awkward. I don’t even want to be here! I want to go home!
“On second thought…”
“No.”
“Does this really matter?”
“The Yadon I fell in love with wasn’t afraid of anything. Not even death.”
“Not fair… questioning a man’s manlyhood… fine I’ll do it.”
“As a reward, you’ll get seconds.”
“Food or sex? Personally, I could go for either or.”
“I’ll let you decide that.” She said with a wink.
Now I’m motivated. Nothing’s going to stop me from getting another round at that booty!
Yadon’s fist clenched into a ball of complete tightness as he reached for the door and produce two soft knocks. As if they were expecting it the door opened up immediately, revealing a middle-aged woman with orange hair.
“Darling, you’re back! It’s been too long.”
“Uh.. that was quick…”
“Honey! Get over here, our son has returned!”
“This is just a standard greeting…”
“Oh, my ol’ boy, returned? That’s surprising. I thought this kid died.”
Here we go.
“Nice to see you dad. I see your baldness is as apparent as ever.”
The man tensed up as a hat was immediately brought over his various bald patches.
“It’s nice to see you guys again.”
“Oh Quin, anytime. We’d love to see you anytime. Please come in.”
And so begins the longest day of my life.
Everyone was sat around the family table. Silence rose up quite early as Yadon didn’t utter a word. Eventually, he grew frustrated and just wanted to leave so he decided to cut right into the chase about the reason they had come over.
“Soo…. I’m a Seer now.”
“...”
“We hoped Quin was joking…” The father spoke out.
“What…?”
“Your girlfriend told us about you graduating and she worked out a way to bring your ungrateful ass back here.”
“Honey, let’s not use potty language.”
“Quin… why!? I told you family stuff was out of the question! I don’t even consider them parents!”
“Sorry… I just hate seeing the drift between you and your family.” Quin lowered her head.
“I’m not mad at you, I’m just mad at these guys.”
“To think all of the resources it took to raise your stupid ass. I regret having a child.”
“I’m sorry I talked you into it, honey.”
“See!? This is what I’m talking about! They don’t care, they never cared.”
“That’s where you're wrong.” The father sighed as he took a stand, his expression taking on a sad look.
“Oh really? How old man?”
“Come out back, I’ll show you.”
Yadon’s father led everyone into the backyard, opening the sliding door to show a nicely cut yard with even grass. An average backyard beside the tombstone that sat in the middle. Seeing this caused Yadon’s eyes to shoot open and his mouth to drop.
“I-is that…” He couldn’t even utter the words.
“Oh my god…” Quin covered her mouth after seeing this.
“We went through a lot of trouble, but we bought you a tombstone for when you die. Which shouldn’t be long. I hope you enjoy it, son because it was expensive.”
I can’t believe them… I never expected them to go this low…! This is it I’m done with them!
With the shock slightly wearing off, Yadon’s knuckled clenched up, his skin muffling from the pressure of his squeeze. In one smooth motion, he swung his fist at his father and landed a critical hit along the bridge of his nose causing a popping sound to be heard before the man fell down.
“Yadon!” Quin and his mother shouted in unison.
“I fucking hate your guts! Let it be known that from this day forth, I want NOTHING to do with you two!” He points a finger at his father who was holding his bleeding nose and at his mother. “This right here proves just how crazy you are and I don’t want anything to do with that shit!” After saying this, Yadon stomps off with Quin following behind him.
“I’m sorry… I never expected that.”
“You don’t need to be sorry. You’re a good person, unlike those two assholes. Forgive me if I said I wouldn’t shed any tears if they were killed because I wouldn’t.”
The hurt in his voice was clear. Yadon carried a lot of pain with him. She just did her best to try and soothe it.
“So, I’m still getting seconds, right?”

Vast Asleep
The story of Kingard the Binder in the aftermath of Broken This short story is the epilogue of Broken, the second book of the Chronicles of Mother's Gate series. It’s a great follow-up to the novel, a bonus story that adds extra layers but is set apart from the full-length narrative. Vast Asleep follows the story of Kingard, who finds himself caught in a world called Mother's realm, bathed in glowing light but strangely stuck in place. He encounters his greatson Varyan there, and learns that his experiences are likely dreams. As he grows more accustomed to the loving realm around him, Kingard remembers fear and trepidation about the face of the world, and he loses contact with his companion. This story answers the question, Is Kingard really dead? with a tentative no, and new mysteries brewing. It also raises the question, What's happening while he's awake? and includes an excerpt from the sister story Ride Awake, about Kingard's situation with the Colkh'rak. Praise for Tales of the Known World Bookends: Loved it. The difference between the two stories is great! The difference between the epilogue and prologue is astounding. So much light and love in the first story. You feel safe reading it. Healing. The second, so much darkness, pain and despair. The choice of vocabulary is awesome and makes an impact. And this set of short stories ties the two books together so well. -- Dana V. of Texas ★★★★★
