《Memoirs of an old traveler:First Rebirth》Chapter 15-Out on the yellow brick road

Harvest time is soon to come and as a bit of learning how the people live I get to walk through the nearby lands on my own. Honestly I find this a relaxing experience, before I would be mostly on the estate training or studying things. The garden is interesting and going on walks or having to intend little gatherings with my parents changed things a little but still routine sets in. Most of the time I leave it is for leaving to try fighting monsters with the guards in a forest farther away or trying out camping and hunting there. There are not usually monsters in the village one due to patrols and village activity so I get brought farther out. I mostly like being able to act out my routine without anything excessive occurring but of course having something to change things up without the need to be going to kill something stops complacency. The fields here are filled with a variety of crops, wheat, oats, turnips, ryegrass, and barley. This appears to be the four field rotation system which is pretty advanced considering what I have seen of the technology but the real surprise was a very basic sewer system and a fertilizer area. I found this out from the smell while walking around the village outskirts but then again the house had a basic plumbing, no flowing water but waste was not simply dumped in a pit. Keeping away from the noxious smell I wandered around further from the village into the fields proper. Looking into the distance I come to a large stream flowing through and people fishing, doing laundry, and other such work. Not bothering to bring attention to myself I just sit and watch while lying in the grass under a tree as it is just after lunch and the sun is still very high in the sky.

After a few minutes however I hear the yelling of kids and see a bunch run nearby with a ball. They started kicking it around to each other in a haphazard manner until one managed to kick it near me, picking it up I toss it back to them. They yell thanks and keep going at it, they are not that old with most being only a few years younger then I technically am and the others around my own. I watch feeling nostalgic while waiting out the sun, too bad I forgot to bring a hat but then again I don’t think we had a non wool or fur hat. Thankfully I was able to get some more plain clothes from the training armoury so I doubt that anyone suspects that I am a noble’s son. They probably think I am a merchant or guard’s son depending on things as I honestly doubt that they think I am a farmer, I am not foolish enough to believe that I have a perfect manner from my speech alone. After they kick the ball near me again I decide to try something, bringing it back to them I yell that I got an idea for a game if they want to try. A few look at each other but quickly ask what idea I have, I give them the idea of having goals and keeping points but don’t try to make it any exact sport like football. I stick a few sticks in the ground to mark the area and the goals and they start trying the game when I split them in two groups.

They start initially with a bit of confusion but some start making plays for the ball and yelling out to get some group work. Soon I see two actual teams working to get the ball into the goal, mostly kicking but a few grab it and toss to another for a pass. I give them the idea of giving people roles like passing, blocking, or trying to get far out to get the chance for a kick into the goal. They get rather enthusiastic about it as I keep track and announce the score every once in awhile. A few get a bit aggressive with pushing but I yell to break it up and the game continues. The game continues for a few hours before they get tired and take a break under the tree I was at before, bidding farewell to them and listening to them say their farewells I go to look at some of the infrastructure which is interesting. In addition to the four field system I see a watermill here to grind grain while further on I remember seeing a windmill on the other side of the village which was used both to draw water to a common well and grind grain but was mostly wood and rotated the major part of the upper body. This village is pretty developed and none of the people are ill fed but then again this is the village with the feudal lord having a residence so obviously care is taken to ensure they are more prosperous. Still I should head back for dinner, it certainly has been interesting exploring the area and being able to relax without work but harvest time will certainly be busy and I wonder whether I will be doing something during that time but that is a thought for later.
